Away in a Manger – Christmas Traditional, ca 1885 Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay.

The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky And stay by my cradle 'til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay Close by me forever, and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And take us to heaven, to live with Thee there.

Coventry Carol By Kenneth Leighton, prior 1550

Lully Lullay, thou little tiny Child, Bye, bye, lully, lullay. O sisters too, how may we do, For to preserve this day This poor youngling for whom we do sing Bye, bye, lully, lullay. Lully Lullay, thou little tiny Child, Bye, bye, lully, lullay. Herod, the king, in his raging, Charg-ed he hath this day His men of might, in his own sight, All young children to slay. Lully Lullay, thou little tiny Child, Bye, bye, lully, lullay. That woe is me, poor Child for Thee! And ever morn and day, For thy parting neither say nor sing, Bye, bye, lully, lullay. Lully Lullay, thou little tiny Child, Bye, bye, lully, lullay.

Happy Everything By Don Black, 1980 If every wish of mine comes true, A box will come addressed to you A velvet box, fit for a king, Now who would send you such a thing? Open it up, and there will be, A happy everything from me My love wrapped in a circus poster, A song inside a ring of gold A smile on a bed of straw, All of this and more Would be in the hands I long to hold If every dream of mine comes true, Tonight a star will shine on you When morning comes, the day will bring, A very happy everything If there's no star, yes there will be, A happy everything from me My love wrapped in a circus poster, A song inside a ring of gold A smile on a bed of straw, All of this and more Would be in the hands I long to hold Open it up, and there will be, A happy everything from me If every wish of mine comes true, (My love wrapped in a circus poster,) A box will come addressed to you. (A song inside a ring of gold,) Open it up, and there will be, (A smile on a bed of straw, all of this and more,) A happy everything from me. (Would be in the hands I long to hold.) If every wish of mine comes true, (My love wrapped in a circus poster,) A box will come addressed to you. (A song inside a ring of gold,) Open it up, and there will be, (A smile on a bed of straw, all of this and more,) A happy everything from me. (Would be in the hands I long to hold.)

HARK THE HERALD ANGELS SING Christmas Traditional (Tune Eltham, American) Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the newborn King Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconcile. Joyful all ye nations rise Join the triumph of the skies; With the angelic host proclaim 'Christ is born in Bethlehem' Hark! the herald angels sing Glory to the newborn King. Hail, the heav’nborn Prince of peace! Hail the Son of righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Risen with healing in his wings. I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus By Thomas “Tommie” P. O’Connor, 1952

I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus Underneath the mistletoe last night She didn't see me creep Down the stairs to have a peep She thought that I was tucked up In my bedroom, fast asleep

Then I saw mommy tickle Santa Claus Underneath his beard so snowy white Oh, what a laugh it would have been If Daddy had only seen Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night

In The Bleak Midwinter By Harold Darke (with text by Christina Georgina Rosetti, 1872), 1911 In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone Snow had fallen snow on snow, sno-ow o-on snow In the bleak midwinter, lo-ong a-ago Our God, heav’n cannot hold Him, Nor earth sustain, Heav’n and earth shall flee away, when He comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter, a stable-place sufficed The Lo-ord God Almighty —Jee-ee-su-us Christ. Enough for Him, whom Cherubim worship night and day, A brea-eastful of milk and a manger full of hay; Enough for Him, whom An-gels fa-all down before, The ox and ass and camel whi-ich a-adore. Angels and Archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim thro-onged the-e air; But o-only His Mother in her maiden bliss Worshipped the Beloved wi-ith a-a kiss. Wha-at can I give Him, po-oor as I am? — If I were a Shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man I would do my part, — Yet what I can I give Him, — gi-ive my-y heart.

The Holy City (Jerusalem!) Song by Stephen Adams, with lyrics by Frederic Weatherly, 1892

Last night I lay asleeping There came a dream so fair, I stood in old Jerusalem Beside the temple there. I heard the children singing And ever as they sang, Methought the voice of Angels From Heaven in answer rang. Methought the voice of Angels From Heaven in answer rang. "Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Lift up your gates and sing, Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna to your King!" And then methought my dream was chang'd The streets no longer rang Hush'd were the glad Hosannas The little children sang The sun grew dark with mystery, The morn was cold and chill As the shadow of a cross arose Upon a lonely hill As the shadow of a cross arose Upon a lonely hill

"Jerusalem, Jerusalem! Hark! How the Angels sing, Hosanna in the highest, Hosanna to your King!" And once again the scene was chang'd New earth there seem'd to be, I saw the Holy City Beside the tideless sea The light of god was on its streets The gates were open wide, And all who would might enter And no one was denied. No need of moon or stars by night, Or sun to shine by day, It was the new Jerusalem That would not pass away. It was the new Jerusalem That would not pass away. "Jerusalem! Jerusalem Sing for the night is o'er Hosanna in the highest Hosanna for evermore! Hosanna in the highest Hosanna for evermore!" 12

JOY TO THE WORLD By Isaac Watts, 1872

Joy to the world, the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing. Joy to the world, the Saviour reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, and wonders, of His love.

Mary’s Boy Child By Jester Hairston, 1956 Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible say Mary's boy child, Jesus Christ, Was born on Christmas Day. Hark now hear the angels sing, a new king born today And man will live for evermore because of Christmas Day. While shepherds watched their flock by night they saw a bright new shining star They hear a choir sing a song the music seemed to come from afar. Hark now hear the angels sing, a new king was born today And man will live for evermore because of Christmas Day. Trumpets sound and angels sing, listen to what they say That man will live for evermore because of Christmas Day For a moment the world was aglow, all the bells rang out there were tears of joy and laughter People shouted let everyone know there is hope for us to find peace Oh my Lord! You sent your son to save us Oh my Lord! Your very self you gave us Oh my Lord! That sin may not enslave us and love may reign once more Oh my Lord! When in the crib they found him Oh my Lord! A golden halo crowned him Oh my Lord! They gathered all around him to see him and adore Oh my Lord! With the child’s adoration Oh my Lord! There came great jubilation Oh my Lord! And full of admiration they saw what they had That man will live for evermore because of Christmas Day.

O HOLY NIGHT By Adolphe Adam, 1847

O Holy Night The stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Saviour's birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining Till he appear'd and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope, the weary soul rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees - Oh hear the angel voices Oh night divine Oh night when Christ was born Oh night divine - Oh night – Oh night divine Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming Here come the wise men from the Orient land The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger In all our trials born to be our friend He knows our need, he guardeth us from danger, Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Behold your King! Before him lowly bend! Fall on your knees - Oh hear the angel voices Oh night divine Oh night when Christ was born Oh night divine - Oh night – Oh night divine 22

Oíche Nollaig By Fr. Pat Ahern (using words by Máire Mhac an tSaoi), 2014 (Claire) Le coinnle na n-aingeal tá an spéir amuigh breactha, Tá fiacail an tseaca sa ghaoith ón gcnoc; Adaigh an tine is téir chun na leapa: Luífidh Mac Dé ins an teach seo anocht. (Sop and alto join singing ‘ah’) Fágaidh an doras ar leathadh ina coinne, An Mhaighdean a thiocfaidh is a Naí ar a hucht; Deonaigh do shuaimhneas a ligean, a Mhuire, Luíodh Mac Dé ins an teach seo anocht. Bhí soilse ar lasadh i dteach sin na haíochta, Cóiriú gan chaoile, bia agus deoch, Do cheannaithe olla, do cheannaithe síoda, Ach luífidh Mac Dé ins an teach seo anocht.

RUDOLPH THE REDNOSED REINDEER By Johnny Marks, words by Robert May, 1949 Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose and if you ever saw it you would even say it glows. All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names They never let poor Rudolph play in any reindeer games. Then one foggy Christmas eve Santa came to say: "Rudolph with your nose so bright, won't you guide my sleigh tonight?" Then all the reindeer loved him as they shouted out with glee, Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer, you'll go down in history! Repeat from “Then one foggy…..”

Silent Night / Night of Silence By Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr, 1818 By Daniel Kantor, 2005

I (First sopranos only) Cold are the people, Winter of life, We tremble in shadows this cold endless night, Frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping, Flowers that will echo the sunrise, Fire of hope is our only warmth, Weary, its flame will be dying soon. II First sopranos sing the following Night of Silence verse while altos and gents hum Silent Night (in harmony) Voice in the distance, call in the night, On wind you enfold us you speak of the light, Gentle on the ear you whisper softly, Rumors of a dawn so embracing, Breathless love awaits darkened souls, Soon will we know of the morning. III Altos and gentlemen

First sopranos:

Silent night, Holy night,

Spirit among us, Shine like the star,

All is calm, all is bright

Your-light-that-guides shepherds and kings from afar,

Round yon virgin, mother and child, Shimmer in the sky so empty, lonely, Holy infant, so tender and mild

Rising in the warmth of your Son's love

Sleep in heavenly peace,

Star unknowing of night and day

Sleep in heavenly please

Spirit we wait for your loving Son. 28

A Spaceman Came Travelling By Chris de Burgh, 1975 A spaceman came travelling on his ship from afar, 'Twas light years of time since his mission did start, And over a village he halted his craft, And it hung in the sky like a star………… just like a star... He followed a light and came down to a shed, Where a mother and child, were-lying-there on a bed A bright light of silver, shone round his head, And he had the face of an angel………….. and they were afraid... Then the stranger spoke, he said "Do not fear, I come from a planet a long way from here, And I bring a message, for mankind to hear," And suddenly the sweetest music………… filled the air... And it went La La... Peace and goodwill to all men, and love for the child... This lovely music, went-trembling-through the ground, And many were wakened, on hearing that sound, And travellers on the road - the village they found, By the light of that ship in the sky…………. which shone all round... And just before dawn, at the paling of the sky, The stranger returned, and said "Now I must fly, When two thousand years, of your time has gone by, This song will begin once again……………….. to a baby's cry..." And it went La La ... This song will begin once again To a baby's cry. And it goes La La... Peace and goodwill to all men, and Love for the child.

This Shock of Flowers By Norah Constance Walsh, 2019

We have a little place, we have a little refuge It’s fun and it’s safe, and occasionally wild When you step inside your worries leave you So take a little break, my friend, come on I can be myself, and I’m perfectly visible I show all the deep passions I’ve felt, ‘cause I’m still fired up inside This is the stuff that lives on, it never leaves you So just be who you are, my friend, come on Live on, love all the things you have done Live on, embrace the adventures to come Letting go is tough, so keep on discovering You’re a silver surfer in the rough against the upstarts of today And when you speak your mind it sounds a symphony There’s far yet to go and much left to say This is the stuff that lives on, these are the memories we hold Songs that wreak havoc inside, lines from a meaningful poem These are the faces we love, people whose stories we share A friend or a classmate of old, a Kathleen, a Tony, a Claire We had a little place, now it’s a revolution It has a smiling face and its big heart beats in time From its single bud this shock of flowers grew And there’s a place for you my friend, come on Ask yourself what else you’d be doing, You know you wanna live on, come on, come inside!

WALKING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND By Felix Bernard, 1934

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane, snow is glistening A beautiful sight, We're happy tonight. Walking in a winter wonderland. Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird He sings a love song, As we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown He'll say: Are you married? We'll say: No man, But you can do the job When you're in town. Later on, we'll conspire as we dream by the fire To face unafraid, the plans that we've made, Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, And pretend that he's a circus clown We'll have lots of fun with mister snowman, Until the other kids knock him down. When it snows, ain't it thrilling, Though your nose gets a chilling We'll frolic and play, the Eskimo way, Walking in a winter wonderland Walking in a winter wonderland

Were You There? By Natalie Sleeth, 1976

Where you there? Where you there On that Christmas night? When the world was filled with a holy light? Where you there to behold when the wonder foretold Came to Earth? Did you see? Did you see? How they hailed him king? With their gifts so rare that they chose to bring? Did you see how they bowed as they praised him aloud At his birth? Did you hear how the choirs of angels sang At the glory of the sight? Did you hear how the bells of Heaven rang All through the night? (Ah 2 lines behind) Did you know, did you know It was God's own son? The salvation of the world begun? Did you know it was love that was sent from above? Did you know it was love that was sent from above To the Earth? Were you there?

Wexford Carol Trad – Transcribed by William Grattan Flood, Enniscorthy (1859-1928)

Good people all, this Christmas time Consider well and bear in mind What our good God for us has done In sending His beloved Son With Mary holy we should pray To God with love this Christmas day In Bethlehem upon that morn' There was a blessed Messiah born Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep Their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep To whom God's angels did appear Which put the shepherds in great fear "Arise and go", the angels said "To Bethlehem, be not afraid For there you'll find this happy morn' A princely Babe, sweet Jesus born" With thankful heart and joyful mind The shepherds went that Babe to find And as God's angel had foretold They did our Savior Christ behold Within a manger He was laid And by his side the Virgin maid Attending to the Lord of life Who came on earth to end our strife 35

When A Child is Born By Zacar, words by Fred Jay, 1974 A ray of hope flickers in the sky A shiny star lights up way up high All across the land dawns a brand new morn This comes to pass when a child is born A silent wish sails the seven seas The winds of change whisper in the trees And the walls of doubt crumble tossed and torn This comes to pass when a child is born A rosy hue settles all around You've got the feel you're on solid ground For a spell or two no-one seems forlorn This comes to pass when a child is born (Spoken by Rosemary – with very soft ooing from the choir) And all of this happened Because the world is waiting Waiting for one child Black, white, yellow, no one knows But a child that would grow up and turn tears to laughter Hate to love, war to peace And everyone to everyone's neighbour Misery and suffering would be forgotten forever It's all a dream an illusion now It must come true, sometime soon somehow All across the land dawns a brand new morn This comes to pass when a child is born This comes to pass when a child is born 36

WHITE CHRISTMAS By Irving Berlin, 1945

I'm dreaming of a White Christmas Just like the ones I used to know Where the treetops glisten and children listen To hear sleigh bells in the snow. I'm dreaming of a white Christmas With every Christmas card I write May your days be merry and bright And may all your Christmases be white. (Repeat)
