FMF Magazine - covering the central Hunterdon area’s premier youth football and cheer program

THE FMF WAY For over 45 years, Flemington Midget Football has provided instruction and support to thousands of successful athletes. During that time, we have developed a unique culture, based around five core beliefs that guide everything we do. “The FMF Way”, is what allows us to successfully develop our athletes physically, mentally and emotionally while providing them with positive experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. THE FMF WAY is:

FAMILY Once a member, always a member

Whenever an athlete competes as a Pioneer or Jr. Red Devil, they join a long tradition of excellence. Many have come before us; we must honor their work by our actions. Many will come after us; we must provide them with a program to be proud of. Once an athlete becomes part of our FMF family, they will forever be welcome here.

SAFETY Athlete safety first, last & always

The health and safety of our athletes comes before everything else. Parents trust us with their children; we must do everything in our power to return them safely. Athletes must let their coach know if they are injured and must not return to action until they are fully ready.

TEACHING Coaching is teaching

It is every coach’s responsibility to teach the fundamental skills and strategies of their sport to ALL of their athletes. It is every athlete’s responsibility to put forth the effort to learn. If an athlete gives the effort, coaches must do whatever is necessary to help them learn and improve. Athletes that progress through our program giving honest effort WILL enter high school with a competitive advantage in skills and tactics

TEAM WE? not me

No one can win by themselves. We all have to trust and rely on each other for the team to be successful. Both coaches & athletes must be prepared to do whatever is necessary for the good of the team. Great teams are built on Teamwork, Dedication, Effort and Trust... lessons that will help our athletes succeed in sports and in life.

SUCCESS Share the work, share the reward

Team success is a by-product of coaches developing every athlete to their personal potential as they progress through the program. Good teams become great when coaches view practice as an opportunity to help their athletes grow and develop and when athletes view practice as an opportunity to maximize their contribution to the team. page 2

FMF Magazine - covering the central Hunterdon area’s premier youth football and cheer program

Our History in Brief Flemington Midget Football is a 501 (c)3 organization dedicated to improving the youth of Hunterdon County through competitive Football and Cheer. One of the oldest youth football organizations in the area, from our founding in 1 967 through 201 0, FMF teams were exclusively known as the Flemington Pioneers. Since 2009, we have undergone tremendous growth and have reclaimed our original name of FMF. In 2009, we added our extended season competition cheer team. In 201 0, with the addition our Hunterdon Jr. Red Devils teams, our football offerings were expanded from four football teams participating in one league to ten football teams participating in three leagues. In 201 3 we were able to offer, for the first time, an Extended Season Cheer Training Squad for girls who were either too young or not yet prepared for the rigors of our Extended Season Comp. Team. Thoughout all of our recent growth, we have worked hard to stay true to our guiding principles , "The FMF Way", and maintain our position as the premier youth football and cheer program in the central Hunterdon region.

How we are Structured

With our recent expansions, we know that things can get a littte confusing. It is our hope that the graphic below willl help to explain how we are currently structured.

FMF Magazine - covering the central Hunterdon area’s premier youth football and cheer program Spring is finally HERE!!! If you're like me, you're thrilled to get outside and enjoy the warm Spring weather. It reminds me of the kind of weather our girls experienced in Disney when they came oh-so-close to winning another UCA National Championship. Well deserved congratulations go out to Coach Michele, Coach Shelly and all of the girls who worked so hard and competed so well. In this issue, we get a chance to re-live the excitement through pictures and the wonder of Twitter. It's the closest many of us will come to being there!

Once again we will hold our second annual Spring Fling free football clinic and open house where players can wake their football skills from a long winter's nap and friends and families can meet and ask questions about the program and the upcoming season. We had a great turnout last year and expect an even better turnout this time. Returning players and prospective players alike are welcome and we look forward to seeing everyone on April 27th at the FMF Complex from 1 2:30-2:30. Finally, Coach Perotti and the Hunterdon Central Athletic Administration cut through mounds of red tape and worked overtime to donate over 60 helmets to FMF. These are the same helmets worn by the State Champion Red Devil football players. As the feeder program to Central, our players will wear them proudly. It's not an exaggeration to say that all of us at FMF are EXTREMELY grateful and cannot say Thank You enough. FMF was scheduled to retire and replace close to 40 helmets this season at a significant cost. Because of their generous donation, we are now able to put that money towards the new building and field. I hope everyone enjoys this issue and the great things that come with Spring, but remember that football season is only 3 months away!!! See you around the field! Sincerely, Craig Torres Interim President Flemington Midget Football

PIONEERS TAKE SECOND AT CHEER NATIONALS

COVER STORY

by Cathi Poulson

The Flemington Pioneer cheerleaders finished second in the Senior Recreation Division during the Universal Cheerleaders Association High School Championships at ESPN's J Center in Orlando, Fla. on Feb. 9. Recent changes to the UCA's Senior Rec division left the Pioneers with a young competition squad this year. The Pioneers, ages 11 -1 4, performed high school-level skills that scored just a half point behind the much older championship squad. Fans included Hunterdon Central High's junior varsity and varsity teams as well as other New Jersey teams competing with the Pioneers at nationals and throughout the season. This was the fourth year the Pioneers have finished first in the region and in the top five nationally. Coaches Michele Luciano and Shelly Johnson continue to lead the Pioneer program with the level of instruction they provide and the performances they deliver.

Competing on the squad were Rachel Beckman, Brooke Livoti, Gabby Milacki, Nicole Meyers, Gia Dameo, Taylor Coury, Bella Steer, Jackie Giles, Haley Kinney, Courtney McManus, Alexis Oyediran, Megan Peake, Lauren Krause, Susie Poulson, Anika Mansdoerfer, Abby Kovi, Mia Dameo, Gianna Crisci, Emily Huddy, Maddie Bogart, Julia Kleinwaks, Brittany Shuba, Madison Johnson and Michaela Smith. page 1 2

JAMES L. "JIMMY" WILSON Our Number One Fan

IN REMEMBRANCE

Jimmy Wilson left a lasting memory with everyone who visited Pioneer Field throughout the 1 980's and early 1 990's. While his wheelchair kept him from taking part on the field, it couldn't keep him from being part of the team. At the end of every summer, like the changing of the seasons, Jimmy was there to usher in football season. He was as much a part of the Pioneer family as the crack of pads echoing through the crisp autumn air and the roar of the crowd on game day. For close to a decade, Jimmy never missed a game, indeed, he never missed a practice in all of his time with us. His love for the game and for the team was infectious and will be forever remembered. In 1 994, after his passing, the organization recognized Jimmy's contribution to our family by naming the playing field after him and retiring the number one jersey, in memory of their #1 fan.

JOSEPH YASHKAS

6/4/85 - 4/29/00 : Forever a Pioneer Joey Yashkas was a Pioneer through and through. He played football for the program and was a great teammate and a key member of the team from his peewee days through his eigth grade season. As much as he loved football and his teammates, Joey also loved racing motorcycles. It was this love that took Joey from us far too soon. After the tragic motorcycle accident that took his life in 2000, the organization retired his number 55 and decreed that in remembrance of Joey and Jimmy, their numbers 1 and 55 be painted in the corner of the endzone for every home game so that they will always be part of our family.
