10.

Great Presentation.

You have to like a star. You have to be a star. You need photo shoots. You need to attack your promotional area looking like a star. I am not impressed with people that walk up to me with their cd hand written with a marker. Look the part. When you see me I look like the part of a program director so you look like the part of the artist you are striving to be. If you are R&B, prissy yourself up. You can prissy yourself up as a male R&B artist. Look at R.Kelly, look at Trey Songz style. Try and come up with your own flare.

Packaging. I need your cd to come to me 9.come packaged correctly. I need your press kit to to me packaged correctly. In a press kit is a bio, I need your demo, and some contact information. Who, what, when, where, and why? On paper. Go out your way to make it look good. Don’t write out a letter. Print it up, make it look professional. Put it in a nice clean folder. Folder can have your logo on it. You can get some stickers with your logo and slab them on the folder. Just take some time to do this.

radio stations across the country are playing your songs. Now the stations have to be media based for BDS registered stations for you to see that. Some stations aren’t in small towns. Like good places such as Dothan, AL or Albany, GA. Get play in cities like Columbus or bigger.

promotional material. This 4.oneisGreat NOT your press kit. We need like flyers, sheets, posters, quality looking cds. Get multiple copies of your cds. Get like 5,000 and pass em out! Leave the passing out to someone else. Perfect your craft. The person that does it all is the person that fails. Jack of all trades, and master of none.

Make contacts and stay in contact 3.know with them. This is a business of who you and not what you know. But don’t pest your contacts. Don’t blow my phone up! If I’m going to play your record I’ma play your record whether you call me once or 5 million times. Take your people to lunch. Like me! Ask where I can get your record to. Socialize and Network! Don’t be afraid to network with those that have the network capabilities.

Media Blitz. Face book, MySpace, TwitSpend some money. If you in this busi8.press ter, Reverb Nation, iTunes. Put it all in your 2. ness, and you in this business to win it, then kit. Promote your stuff on those sites. you gone have to be like the ones before you And make sure the stuff on those sites goes with what you are trying to do. Presentation looks good on that as we go back to number 10 even though you doing it on a shoe string budget.

Get out of your city. I know you love 7.theColumbus, and I know everybody thinks you man because your song is playing on 98.3 Da Beat, but this world is bigger than Columbus, GA. There are a lot of other program directors that might play your song, if they had it. You could say, “Hey Lil D is playing my song on 98.3 Da Beat, call Lil D and ask him what he thinks of my song…” Just get out of this city. Go out the city and promote yourself out the area.

you some quality manage6.beGet ment. Your home boy does NOT need to your manager. No more home boy managers. There are people out there credible. It might cost you some dollars but they will know how to talk to a DJ, the PD, the MD. It’s not all the time your job. Make sure you have someone that knows how to politic with those people.

Finger print your music. And that is 5.your the MAIN thing. BDS or Media Base, send music to them so people can keep track of your music. It’s a tracking system of which

and spend some money. Buy an ad in this magazine. Buy you several ads in this magazine. Buy the cover of this magazine! Become the featured artist. That’s the best promotion, that’s the best start you can do. And it’s for just a little bit of money. So don’t be afraid cause everything is going to cost you a little bit. You have to make an investment in yourself. No one is going to invest in you if you don’t do that for yourself first.

You need over 300 BDS spends. 1.onGo to BDSradio.com website. There is a link the site where you can upload your music.

What they do is put timed codes behind your music and they send it back to you, that way you make multiple copies off the time codes. And from off the time codes, everyone that plays that, that has BDS, it detects the song. So you keep track of it. Don’t tell me Universal is looking at you if you only have 5 spins. They are NOT! Don’t make me believe that’s what is happening until you get 300 spins per week. That means that each radio station that you are on needs to play you like x amount of times.

It’s going to cost you some money to do all of these things. Take out a loan. Hell, find a dope dealer to sponsor you! Whatever it takes, that’s what you need! savannah

Strategies On Using Social Networking

For The Independent Artist by Jacquan @J_Nova84 Coleman

You’ll find the web littered with advice for independent music artists all about how you can use social network sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter to promote your music, attract a tribe of supporters and make more money. It’s easy to get lost in the hype which surrounds the latest and greatest social network. First it was all about MySpace, then Facebook came along and stole the show, then Twitter and so they rise and fall. You need good strategies to deal with social networks in order to leverage them for maximum advantage for your career and business. I give you these 3 strategies which I think you should keep in mind when it comes to your web music marketing… Obscurity is your enemy, make sure you are seen in all the right places. Yes, this means you’ll create profiles on web sites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, YouTube and also on sites more specific to your genre or niche. You realize there is nothing worse than a “ghost town” profile last updated over two months ago and which shows no real sign of activity. You can therefore see why you’ll have to spend time to update all these profiles and communicate with the users on the different sites, or get someone to do it for you. You can use a service such as Ping.fm to update multiple social networks from one central location. You can also use FriendFeed.com or SocialThing.com to track the different networks you’re active on. You won’t get far with traditional advertising and marketing methods on the web. You know the type of advertising where you basically scream or flash your message anywhere you can in the hopes that you may distract the already over-distracted masses with your product.

site. You want to also give tools such as “share this page” widgets to help your supporters spread the word about your music. Word of mouth is easy to create when your music is good, you are present and open and your web site is often updated with lots of quality content. People will share things they enjoy with friends and tell others how much they like you when you are nice to them. You can not buy word of mouth. You cannot avoid word of mouth when you offer outstanding value!

Your own web site, that is. Your own web site and domain name shows that you are serious about your music and also gives you control over the content and stats generated by your visitors. You create equity for yourself when you add content to your own web site which is not the case when you add content to social networking sites. Social networking sites do however offer you a potential source of visitors to your web site. Your strategy should be to direct visitors from outside web sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and others to your own web site. So… … use the social networks to add to the value of your own business, not build the business of the social networks. Conclusion… You need to be present and update often on the major social networks and other genre-specific networks. People talk about things which they enjoy and find valuable. People share music they like. So… … create and deliver value to people on your web site and with your presence and you’ll receive value in return. Your music marketing will be most effective when you have your own web site to which you can funnel visitors from social networks and other outside web sites.

You want to rather build relationships with your potential tribe members and turn them into active supporters of you and your music. So… … be authentic, be honest, interact with your visitors as much as possible and over-deliver on value with the music and the other content you provide on your web savannah
