Construction Update The snowfall and frigid temperatures over the past month has affected all of Western North Carolina in one way or another, and the construction at AVL is no exception. Despite some weather-related delays, we are making steady progress on airport improvement projects. Pictured, right, is the A-Gate area of the Demolition of A-Gate high roof, Dec. '09 terminal. Demolition is nearly finished and construction of a new steel frame is underway. A passenger boarding bridge is about to undergo thorough testing at the manufacturing facility. In the parking lot, a new toll facility is 75% complete. Paving and landscaping continues, and new internally-lit signage is being installed to improve nighttime visibility. The Wright Brothers Way improvements are progressing with retaining wall installation, road improvements, sidewalk installation and utility relocation. We'll bring you another update and some new photos as we get closer to completion on these projects. In the meantime, please remember to arrive at the airport at least 90 minutes before your flight time, and thanks for your patience as we improve AVL and your travel experience!

Now Apply Online for Art in the Airport! A new interactive online application form, which can be found at www.flyavl.com, now makes it easier for artists to apply for the show, which will be on display from March 6, 2010, until June 15, 2010. There is no fee to submit artwork, and all pieces are judged by area arts professionals. Western North Carolina artists are featured in a dedicated gallery space as well as throughout the airport terminal. Artists are invited to submit between four (4) and ten (10) pieces of artwork in any medium, bearing in mind that artwork must be suitable for all audiences. Applications must be received by Friday, January 29, 2010. To be considered for Art in the Airport, artists must reside in Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Transylvania or Yancey Counties. With approximately 600,000 passengers traveling through Asheville Regional Airport each year, artwork on display receives tremendous attention, and pieces have sold from 90% of the previous exhibits. Visit www.flyavl.com to learn more and apply, or e-mail art@flyavl.com for more information.

Spotlight on Maintenance When you fly from AVL, you may not notice the work done by our Maintenance Department, but you certainly experience the product of their efforts. The team is comprised of more than a dozen employees and together they handle a variety of tasks.

Snow removal crew in action, Dec. '09

While aircraft maintenance is handled by each airline, our crew manages all airport facilities, including the terminal, runway, and all airport property. From electricians and mechanics to plumbers and landscapers, the crew keeps lights, restroom facilities, machinery, and airport grounds in pristine condition through preventive and routine maintenance. With above-average snowfall and below-average temperatures, the team has kept busy over the past month with snow-removal, including clearing the runway (which alone is 27.5 acres of area) and maintaining public areas outdoors. By the numbers, the Maintenance crew manages: • •

800+ acres of grass 3000+ light fixtures

• • • •

826 runway lights 8+ miles of roadway 20+ miles of fences 25 vehicles, plus 30 pieces of support equipment

We take our hats off to Maintenance as they brave weather of all kinds to proactively make your travel experience as safe, smooth, and enjoyable as possible.
