Last year, Champaign-Urbana really increased its importance and visibility in the athletic community with the start of the Illinois Marathon and the return of national-caliber bicycle racing at the Tour de Champaign. 2010 will mark the second edition of both events. The Verizon Wireless Tour de C-U is series of fast-paced criterium bicycle races that will take place in downtown Urbana on Saturday, May 22 and downtown Champaign on Sunday, May 23. Criteriums are very spectator-friendly events, contested in multiple laps around a short circuit of approximately 1 mile. Participants will range from beginning racers through elite amateurs and professionals. Like the Illinois Marathon, the event's success will reflect positively on the C-U community and will depend on volunteers! My cycling team, Wild Card Cycling, is co-sponsoring the event and recruiting volunteers. Volunteer shifts will be as follows: 1. Saturday, May 22 1:00 pm - 4:45 pm 2. Saturday, May 22 4:30 pm - 8:30 pm 3. Sunday, May 23 8:30 am - 12:15 pm 4. Sunday, May 23 12:00 pm - 3:45 pm 5. Sunday, May 23 3:30 pm - 7:00 pm All volunteers will receive a package of promotional goods from race sponsors, as well as food and refreshments while on duty. Music and entertainment will be presented at both racing venues, with downtown restaurants and bars contributing to the festive atmosphere. Most volunteers will serve as course marshals and will have an excellent opportunity to watch the racing action up close. We will provide you with detailed instructions and training prior to the races. Please email me ASAP if you are willing to help. Let me know which shift(s) you would be available. A schedule of races, links to course maps, and other information is available on the official flier. All are welcome to race as well, even if you are new to the sport. (However, you should have a good road bike in safe, working condition and be able to handle it well through corners at speeds of at least 15 miles per hour.) There are beginner races for both men (category 5) and women (category 4). The race is sanctioned by USA Cycling and temporary licenses may be obtained at the race. Pre-registration will be available here. There will also be fun, free kids' races (ages 312) on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
