FLORIDA FFA A S S O C I A T I O N

2012-2013 ANNUAL REPORT

1

DEAR FLORIDA FFA SUPPORTERS, What an exciting year it has been for Florida FFA and agricultural education. We are excited to highlight our accomplishments and achievements in our innaugural Florida Agricultural Education and FFA Annual Report. This year we have celebrated yet another year of record growth. We have seen more teams compete in Career Development Events, more members attend various leadership conferences, more students earn their State and American FFA degrees, and more individuals zip up a blue corduroy jacket, showing their commitment to the future of agriculture. Despite the public’s perception of agricultural education, Florida chartered 20 new FFA chapters and set an all-new membership record of 16,540 FFA members. These numbers prove the known value of FFA and agricultural education to prepare students for next-generation careers in agriculture, food and natural resources. And with such a promising future, Florida Farm Bureau announced an investment and partnership to construct our new Florida FFA headquarters in Gainesville. This was an investment in the future of agriculture, the blue corduroy jacket, and our next local, state and national leaders. There is no better investment. We look foward to continuing our growth and success as we move forward into the new year. Programs like the Quality Chapter Planning Guide will continue to help FFA chapters ensure a superior experience. Rigorous and relevant Career Development Events will prepare students for tomorrow’s workforce. Additional professional development opportunities will better equip teachers for the challenges they face. Most importantly, your continued support and belief in the future of agriculture will help keep Florida FFA going and growing.

BUILDING OUR LEGACY

E

arly in our FFA careers, each of us learned about the history of our organization and those important milestones that have brought us to where we are today. Milestones like our founding in 1928, the development of the FFA jacket in 1933, the first National President from Florida in 1937 and even that defining moment when females were first allowed to join in 1969. You might have even learned about the birth of the Florida FFA Foundation in 1976, the founding of the Florida FFA Alumni in 1979 or perhaps even the grand opening of the Florida FFA Leadership Training Center in 1992. It is milestones like these that have made the Florida FFA Association the greatest student organization in the world.

No Better Investment Florida Farm Bureau realizes that there is no better

6

investment of time or money than to invest in young people who are interested in agriculture. Together with FFA, Florida Farm Bureau Federation in partnership with Florida Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company decided to put our money where their mouth is and make a significant investment into the future of Florida FFA. At this year’s convention, Florida Farm Bureau President John Hoblick announced that the statewide organization will lead a bold partnership to build a new headquarters for the Florida FFA Association. The facility will be constructed on Florida Farm Bureau’s campus in Gainesville. Hoblick said the project is valued at an estimated $1.5 million. The Florida Farm Bureau Federation and the Florida Farm Bureau Casualty Insurance Company will fund most of the cost. Donations from individual donors, businesses and private organizations across the state will contribute $150,000.

“This is one of most exciting initiatives I have ever had the privilege of participating in as president of our great organization,” Hoblick said. “We have always supported leadership development programs for young people. We have also enjoyed a long and productive association with our FFA partners. “We want to continue the tradition of creating opportunities for our very capable FFA members,” Hoblick added. “I know that the new headquarters will be a vital resource for many decades into the future. This structure will stand as a permanent demonstration of our shared commitment to youth education and the quest for success.” The new headquarters will include a welcome center, meeting rooms, office space, and state officer living quarters. The organization will spread out to nearly 6,000 square feet in the new headquarters compared to just over 1,000 square feet in the current office space.

“This space will have a production facility to produce the physical things that come out of our office. We will also have an office suite and the office space we need. There will be several meeting rooms and a boardroom that can also be used by FFB. Also, there will be a full dorm for male and female state officers, and that will save us around $10,000 a year just in lodging costs alone,” said Ronnie Simmons, Florida FFA executive director. “We are truly humbled and excited about the new headquarters and more importantly, the continued support of Florida Farm Bureau,” Simmons added. “As our organization continues to grow, we look forward to working with FFB to ensure a bright and promising future for Florida agriculture.” Construction is scheduled to begin early fall of 2013 and finished early 2014. STARS OF FLORIDA Star Discovery Award

Baylee Etheridge, Williston Middle

Sponsored by William E. Hamm and Associates, Inc.

Baylee Etheridge, a member of the Williston Middle FFA Chapter has grown up around cattle. At a young age she began working with her father at their family business, Thomas Cattle Company. When she was eight years old she began showing cattle and soon realized that she wanted to own a herd of her own. In 2010 she and her brother went in together and purchased 18 head of commercial heifers and one bull. She raised and sold the calves off of the heifers for a profit of $18,000. She began attending club calf sales around the Southeast and used the profits from her cattle business to purchase nine heifers and six steers. She has set the goal to raise and sell her own show cattle to FFA members in her area by the time that she graduates from high school. In order to meet this goal she knew she had to improve certain areas of her operation. She worked with her parents to build a barn that including a wash rack, clipping room and practice arena. She also determined that to get the best genetics she needed to be skilled in the area of artificial insemination. She has become a certified AI technician and is not working with her father to conduct embryo transfer of some of her cattle. Etheridge hopes to one day attend the University of Florida and major in animal science. Her advisor is Natalie Couey.

Star Greenhand Greenhand Colson Cannon, Brooksville Sr. Sponsored by Walpole, Inc.

Brooksville FFA member, Colson Cannon is a seventh generation agriculturist, where he works with his family’s cow-calf and tree farming operation. He has also added some projects of his own. He began showing cattle at the Hernando County Fair when he was nine years old, which sparked an interest for him to own his own cattle operation. He began his herd with one cow, which was a gift from his grandparents. After obtaining that first cow, when he was ten years old, he has slowly purchased heifers to add to his herd. In the summer of 2011 he also decided to branch out and purchased four Holstein heifers to raise and sell back to dairies as springer heifers. He quickly found out that there is an immense difference between dairy and beef heifers. He had to expand his knowledge to ensure that he was giving the right care to his dairy heifers. Cannon’s SAE is truly diverse, aside from working with his family’s operations and his own cattle operation, he is heavily involved with team roping. Cannon shares that team roping requires physical and metal preparation, that thinking is a major part of the sport. By the time he was seven years old he was roping live cattle. He now is involved with the Florida High School Rodeo Association and the National Team Roping League. Cannon hopes to continue growing his projects, while saving money for college. He hopes to attend Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and obtain a degree in animal science. His advisor is Rick Ahrens.

STARS OF FLORIDA Star in Agribusiness Jordan Gaylard, Branford

Sponsored by Purina Animal Nutrition LLC

Branford FFA member, Jordan Gaylard has been raised in a family that owned cattle, cut hay and processed sugar cane for syrup. From a young age his parents instilled in him the need to save money from every project, so that he would have an investment in the next. Gaylard is a true agribusiness man. He operates several small businesses including cattle sales, hay sales and the production of cane syrup. Gaylard uses money that he has saved from projects over the years, as well as the money that his show animals produce each year to fund his projects. Gaylard decided he wanted to play a more active role in the producing of cane syrup and grew his own sugar cane on Âź acre of land. He marketed his project by word of mouth and advertisement at his local feed store. Utilizing best management practices, he has tripled his yield from the previous year, without an increase in land. Gaylard also began a hay business where he purchased round bales and converted them into square bales, a market that he found to be very profitable. In the last two years, he has purchased over $50,000 of hay and sold to niche markets for a profit of over $10,000. Gaylard hopes to obtain a degree in Food and Resource Economics and continue his businesses into the future. His advisor is Stacy Young.

Star in Agricultural Placement Jakob Weinreich-Frick, Orlando Colonial

Sponsored by William E. Hamm and Associates, Inc. & Richard & Yolanda Joyner

Orlando Colonial FFA member, Jakob Weinreich-Frick always enjoyed working with his hands. From a young age he was very interested in learning how things operated and what made them work. In his spare time he would draw up plans on how to build go carts, cars and any equipment powered by a motor. He would compare them to other plans to see what would work best. When he joined FFA he began participating in career development events such as, Tractor Driving and Agricultural Mechanics. He also took an Automotive Service Technology course during three of his high school years. Through one of his chapter’s alumni contacts, he met the sales manager for Sunbelt Lawn and Tractor who put him in contact with the owner. Jakob shared his passion for the industry, and the owner offered him a job as a service technician. Since that time he has honed his skills and has progressed from just putting equipment together for the show room, to repairing clutches and rebuilding transmissions and gear assemblies on John Deere Agricultural tractors. He has recently been asked to work as a mobile service technician, driving to ranches and jobs to repair large equipment. Jakob hopes to earn his bachelors degree in Agricultural Operations Management from the University of Florida and begin conducting research into alternative fuels and the use of robotics to make American agriculture more competitive in the global economy. His advisor is Tim App.

Star in Agriscience

Delaney Ahrens, Brooksville Sr. Sponsored by Mosaic Companies

Delaney Ahrens a member of the Brooksville Senior FFA Chapter had very little interest in science or math when she entered high school. However, as part of a requirement for her Agriscience Foundations class she conducted an agriscience fair project. After spending time at Florida’s Food Safety Lab in Tallahassee, she fell in love with science. She started completing more intense science fair projects and participating in the State Science and Engineering Fair of Florida, as well as the National Agriscience Fair. She also began volunteering with her local extension office summer science day camp, where she was able to share her love for science with younger students. Over the course of her FFA career, she has increased her involvement in the science field by teaching others the importance of the scientific method and through hands on experiments in industry laboratories. Recently she was able to work in a local pharmaceutical company, where she could get first hand experience in the industry. Through this experience she has found her passion of research in the pharmaceutical field. As she enters college, she plans to continue her work with more advanced equipment and procedures. Her advisor is Rick Ahrens.

Star Farmer

Clayton Lyons, Baker County Sponsored by Farm Credit

Clayton Lyons, a member of the Baker County FFA chapter began his project by raising laying hens and selling eggs in his community. He sold the eggs to earn capital to begin his enterprise with cattle and swine. He purchased his first swine at the age of seven and fell in love. His father helped him to construct a pen at their home so that he could begin his operation. The following year he purchased a gilt to breed and raise his own show pigs. Lyons kept one pig from her first litter and sold the rest to students in his area. Each year he has expanded his sow herd. In addition to showing swine, he also began showing cattle. He set goals for each of his projects, first he wanted to raise and sell eighty show pigs in one year. Second he wanted to raise and sell the grand champion hog for his local fair before he graduated high school and lastly he wanted to increase his cattle herd to forty five Brangus cattle and to be able to produce all of his forage needs. Lyons has worked hard and has obtained most of his goals. He has raised the Grand Champion Pig for each of the last two years at the Baker County Fair and he has increased his Brangus herd to 46. Last year he was able to produced approximately thirty tons of hay for his cattle. He also planted twenty-four acres of winter rye. During the summer, he planted two acres of corn for his cattle and swine. While this only meets a partial amount of his animals needs, he is working to meet the goal of producing all of his forage needs. Lyons plans to attend the University of Florida and obtain a degree in business, while continuing to build his growing agricultural enterprises. His advisor is Greg Johnson.

Clay Sapp Named 2012-2013 National FFA President From an early age, Florida student Clay Sapp knew he was a good communicator and teacher. But it wasn’t until he took some agricultural education classes and joined FFA that he discovered how he wanted to channel those two skills. He learned about the country’s need for great teachers who could teach agriculture. He determined that his passion lies in school administration. “I want to teach high school agricultural education and then obtain a master’s degree in educational leadership,” he said. “My goal is to become a school administrator so I can encourage classroom innovation and motivate students.” A seven-year member of the Madison County FFA chapter in Madison, Fla., Sapp served as a Florida national FFA delegate from 2008-2010 and won his state’s prepared public speaking competition in 2010. He was student body president his senior year in high school, salutatorian of his graduating class and a varsity baseball and tennis player.

“I intend to serve and give of myself as a leader and role model,” he said. “I realize that not all of my hopes and dreams for our organization may be feasible but in a year from now I want to know that I planted seeds to advance the National FFA Organization’s mission for the future of agriculture.”

MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

FLORIDA FFA F O U N D A T I O N

William Hamm Foundation President

Dear Friend of FFA: It is my honor and privilege to offer a brief update of the Florida FFA Foundation’s Activities for 2012. This year’s Beast Feast, led by Florida FFA Foundation Board Member, Tim Lopez, was another outstanding success in helping to continue to reduce debt from the construction of our Conference Center and damages from the 2004 Hurricanes. We truly enjoy something unique to FFA with the Leadership Training Center Facilities south of Haines City, FL. There is no other State FFA Program that compares with the Facilities & Staff that we have the opportunity to utilize for our young people. If you have never had the opportunity to visit; please feel free to give Gary Bartley and his staff a call at 863-439-7332. We have been very blessed to accomplish many of our goals through the continuing “Advancing the Vision” Capital Campaign. I would like to invite you to check out our FL FFA Foundation web page at www.flaffafoundation.org for a visual tour of our success to date. The Foundation continues to grow and expand the Award programs for Florida FFA members and chapters. This past year, we secured sponsorship for 7,000 awards made possible by 190 special project sponsors. This means on the average, nearly 50% of all Florida FFA Members receive an award during the year made possible by your FFA Foundation. Our many sponsors & contributors help make all this possible and we are thankful to each of them for their continued ongoing support of the Florida FFA Foundation. It is truly all about our young people and the future; and I would like to close by thanking our Executive Director of the Florida FFA Foundation, Gary Bartley & his staff, for the outstanding job in helping execute our vision for the Foundation. We appreciate the work and effort our Board of Directors does in making this program possible. We couldn’t do it without them. Thank you for the privilege to play a small part in what we try to accomplish. Sincerely, William Hamm CEO, William E. Hamm & Associates Independent Financial Partners Florida FFA Foundation Board President 2010 - 2012

FLORIDA FFA ALUMNI AND SUPPORTERS Doug Register President

The Florida FFA Alumni Association has had a very successful year. We have been able to offer support to many local groups as they have chartered new affiliates or reactivated old affiliates. We have reached out to local alumni members through our annual alumni retreat. We have seen our retreat grow with the addition of FFA members and advisors to our attendance. Local Alumni members have learned strategies that they can use to work more effectively with chapter advisors and FFA members, and advisors and students have learned how to work with alumni. The Florida FFA Alumni council is made up of 21 volunteers from all walks of life who are dedicated to improving the FFA Alumni in Florida. We all believe that strong alumni affiliates will lead to strong FFA chapters. We designed and marketed the T-Shirts “I wore the Blue Jacket” and “I Support the Blue Jacket” that generated national attention and was turned over to the National Supply Service. Our FFA Alumni membership in Florida has reached an all time record the past few years and stands at 2,657 at the current time. Longtime Florida Alumni Council Member Gary D. Lee was inducted into the Florida FFA Hall of Fame on October 1, 2012. Mr. Lee has supported FFA on state and national levels for nearly 50 years. State Council Member Andrea Stevenson of Orange County serves on the National Alumni Council in an at-large position. The Florida FFA Alumni played an active role at the 85th Florida FFA Convention. Florida Agricultural Education and FFA Annual Report

UF AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION AND COMMUNICATION Dr. Ed Osborne Department Chair

We continue to be fully committed as a part of the larger Florida Ag Ed team to further advancing agricultural education in Florida’s public schools. Typically, more than 80% of our students accept an agriscience teaching position upon graduation, and the demand for new agriscience teachers in Florida remains strong. In this last year our agriculture teacher education programs in Gainesville and Plant City produced 25 new teacher candidates, including several graduate students. We continue to look for opportunities to establish agriculture teacher education programs in the Panhandle and South Florida as a way to increase teacher supply. A new student recruitment initiative called “The Ag Ed Institute” was launched at the 2013 State FFA Convention. The idea for the Institute was generated at the 2013 National Ag Ed Summit in Indianapolis. Fifty-five FFA members attended this initial workshop, and nearly 80% signed up for the multi-year program. Our focus in this program will be on further increasing their enthusiasm for becoming an agriscience teacher, building a sense of community among these prospective teacher education students, and assisting with their college and career planning. Plans are to hold an Ag Ed Institute at each State FFA Convention in coming years. Several of our current and former students received national recognition this past year. National FFA President Clay Sapp is a student in our teacher education program and will resume his UF studies at the conclusion of the National FFA Convention this fall. Incoming AEC teacher education student Brittany Ware has been selected as a National Teach Ag Ambassador for 2013-2014. Brittany is one of 11 ambassadors participating in this initiative of The National Council for Agricultural Education and coordinated by the National Association of Agricultural Educators. Barrett Keene, former State and National FFA officer from Plant City, AEC Department alumnus, and former Florida agriscience teacher, was one of 25 UF graduates selected from the last 10 years to receive the 2013 UF Outstanding Young Alumni award. Our faculty coordinated and/or delivered nearly 100 hours of teacher professional development programming during the 2012-2013 academic year. This included numerous sessions at the Mid-Winter Teachers Conference and FACTE Conference and workshops designed to help teachers prepare their students for industry certification exams. In addition, our faculty served on the board of directors for six Florida Ag Ed associations, prepared the state agriscience teacher directory, managed a monthly electronic teacher resources bulletin, coordinated seven state-level CDEs, and assisted with state FFA officer screening. The Department’s redesigned, online MS degree program was launched in January 2013. More than 60 agriscience teachers and extension agents in Florida and around the nation have earned their degrees through this program since the first gradates in 2007. Discussions with graduates led to the development of a new set of courses in education, leadership, and communication delivered in a 16-week format. Students can also now pursue the program at an accelerated, two-year pace or a more flexible pace to accommodate their professional schedules. We look forward to more exciting progress in Florida Ag Ed in the coming year! Respectfully Submitted, Dr. Ed Osborne Chair

The 2012-2013 FAAE year started with the Florida Association of Career and Technical Education Conference and FAAE Pre-conference sessions that were a success. Over 50 teachers attended. Highlights included presentations by inspiring teachers, industry representatives, our traditional Owl’s Breakfast, and FAAE Social Night. This past fall several of the FAAE officers and members attended the annual NAAE Conference in Atlanta, Ga. The convention provided many opportunities of professional development from greenhouse management to service learning projects. Brett Brandner and Perry Byars were both elected chairmen of the committees they attended. Florida’s very own Farrah Johnson took over the duties as NAAE President. The Georgia Association did a great job as the NAAE Conference Host. In January, FAAE hosted the Mid-Winter Conference at our FFA State Leadership Training Center in Haines City. Over 100 participants enjoyed this 3-day event. Our agenda provided updates from FL FFA, National FFA, FL DOE, and industry certification training among many other topics to take back to our classes. Special committees were added to the FAAE to help align the association with the NAAE committee structure. The initial committee meetings were a great success and they also provided opportunities for FAAE members to get involved in the operations of the association. Kyle Hearn represented the FAAE at the National Policy Seminar in Washington D.C. this past February. He and Farrah Johnson had the opportunity to visit the offices of Senators and Representative from across Florida to promote agricultural education. In March the FAAE sponsored Ag on the Hill, a huge success for both teachers and students. We visited with the Commissioner of Agriculture and a number of State Senators and Representatives to express our concerns on items pertaining to the proposed education bill. The FAAE played in active role at the 85th Florida Convention. The FAAE sponsored the Open and Closing Ceremonies, the Prepared Public Speaking awards and the Agricultural Education CDE and Proficiency award at this Florida FFA Convention. The FAAE also hosted a booth at the convention for teacher recruitment and retention. 2013 FAAE Award winners were: Teacher Turn the Key - Fallon Driver from Lake Weir Middle Outstanding Program - Oakleaf High, Kerri Milligan Outstanding Teacher -Stan Scurlock from Sneads High Outstanding Young Member - Chad Lyons from Lafayette Ideas Unlimited - Kerri Milligan from Oakleaf High Respectfully Submitted, Stan Scurlock, 2012-2013 FAAE President

Florida Agricultural Education and FFA Annual Report

FLORIDA AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION Agricultural Education is a school-based program that prepares youth for careers in agriculture. The program has been employing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiatives and 21st century teaching and learning principles for nearly 100 years. The program has stood the test of time in developing student content knowledge, communication skills, business acumen, collaborative spirit, global awareness and more. This happens through an innovative local, state and national support system that nurtures the maturation of students’ multi-dimensional abilities required of them in the 21st century. Agriculture is a broad-spectrum industry with a diversity of career and job opportunities across the food, fiber and natural resources systems. Only a small percentage of people working in the agricultural industry are involved in production agriculture. The remaining careers impact agriculture through agribusiness, science, communications, government, education, processing, distribution, marketing, sales and other occupations that serve the farmer or the total agricultural industry.
