WEDDING TRADITIONS 6

traditions

Most couples and their families love to see some religious or cultural customs honored at a wedding. In fact, some of these traditional customs have been in place for so long, we’ve forgotten why they are a part of our traditions in the first place! We’ve gathered the most common traditions, revealed their meanings and superstitions and offered a new spin. Some of the following have us giggling and questioning is this worth keeping or is it time to buck the trends? matching bridesmaids dresses: toss it Past: This tradition was originally meant to confuse the bride’s former suitors and protect them from evil spirits! Present: With bridal parties uniting at a wedding destination from across many states, it's tough to find a "one style fits all" approach. Most modern approach - the bride may choose a color or designer and have her bridesmaids choose a dress that flatters them most. the best man: keep it Past: Back when arranged marriages were more common, the Best Man was in place to make sure the bride didn’t get cold feet and run away. Present: The groom's Best Man is now in place to keep him calm, cool, and collected. We suggest making sure both bridal parties feel like a unit, that way they can best support their friends. Invite the groomsmen to a pre-ceremony toast with your gals! something old, something new: keep it Past: Something old represents continuity; something new offers optimism for the future; something borrowed symbolizes borrowed happiness; something blue stands for purity, love, and fidelity; and a sixpence in your shoe is a wish for good fortune and prosperity (although this remains largely a British custom.) Present: We’ve seen beautiful brooches from Grandma on the ribbon of the bride’s bouquet, and lots of romantic, sentimental touches. For a really new spin, add some fabulous blue shoes, or let your bridesmaids write a message on the soles in blue marker.

the first look: keep it Past: Originally this came from the superstition that it was bad luck to even meet your bride, let alone see her before your wedding. Depending on her looks, the groom may change his mind! The bride’s family feared if he had too much time, he could call off the wedding. Present: We love the idea of the first look. Even with a photographer to capture those moments, it’s still an intimate and private time before the day gets crazy. Don’t worry, he’ll still be in awe of you walking toward him to exchange vows, and you’ll have a beautiful photo story for years to come.

entry over the threshold: toss it Past: In the past, the “blushing bride” of an arranged marriage was not allowed to show her eagerness to leave her father’s home. Therefore, her new husband “carried her away,” as if against her will. Present: This translated into modern weddings as the husband carrying his bride over the threshold of their new home. While it is supposed to symbolize a new beginning in their lives, often times this symbol is not applicable in new aged romances. Most couples already co-habitate together before marriage, rendering this antiquated tradition redunant.

need to know cake

TRENDS expert: haylee shaddock, owner of southern bay bakery

It has been a full year since the pandemic changed the way we interact with the world. Couples had to put their wedding dreams on hold and the industry pivoted to catch up to accommodate safety measures for our new normal in bridal. Bakers have been challenged to develop creative desserts that work for our new normal. As a result, there has been an outpouring of innovative cake designs that make wedding cakes (or cake alternatives) more exciting than ever! Here are six sweet new trends to consider: individual desserts Dessert and candy tables are out for now, but we have a work around. Individually wrapped sweet treats are in! Re-imagine your dessert table and think of confections wrapped in style. Cupcake towers are now becoming cupcake boxes. Mini macaroon boxes acting as favors or table seating name holders. Personalize them with a monogrammed sticker or ribbon.

On a beautiful day in February, family and friends gathered at arguably the most magical venue here in Sarasota - The Ringling Museum - to celebrate

MICHELLE CHAD

Michelle and Chad’s nuptials. From an ice bar that looked like a horse drawn carriage, to a ceremony walkway that reflected like water and draped in florals, this was a wedding straight out of a storybook. After dating for over 6 years, Chad proposed to Michelle at the building site of their new home. “My proposal was perfect because Chad took me where our house was being built. As I was gazing at the water he got on one knee

We asked the bride what made her day so special? “Our family and friends who gathered to celebrate our marriage. We were so happy to see everyone. There were wonderful memories made that night and I'm so happy we were surrounded by love.” reflected Michelle. “Not to mention, my dream team made everything absolutely stunning! The beautiful ladies who helped me with my gorgeous dresses. My fairytale signs and pictures. From the hair to the makeup to the flowers and the food. The singers, the band, the magician, the caricature, the photo booth, the fabulous photographer, and all the people behind the scenes.” “Once in a while you get that fairytale” said Michelle. “Chad and I definitely did!”

preparation

checklist to the perfect

VACATION more than six months ahead

two weeks before

m Set a budget.

m Purchase traveler’s checks, record the numbers and record them incase they are lost or stolen.

m Explore ideas with your Travel Professional. If you find your dream trip is out of reach financially, they can help you find alternatives that offer many of the same characteristics. m Make reservations with hotels, airlines, car rental agencies. Be specific with what you want. Type of room, choose your seats, special meals etc. Get confirmation numbers for everything. m Traveling to an exotic location? Check with the CDC Traveler’s Health Site to see if certain vaccinations are required or what Covid travel restrictions are in place. m Get your passports and visas in order. (603-334-0500 or travel. state.gov). Remember your name has to match exactly on all travel documents (airline tickets passports, visa’s, green card, etc.) Brides should not yet travel with their new married name.

three months ahead m Get a packing list started. Do you have what you need? If you get a new camera, practice using it. How is your luggage? Need a new bathing suit or lingerie?

m Pick up your tickets from your travel agent and make sure all the information is correct. If not they can fix it. m Pack everything you can and set bags aside.

one week ahead m Put your mail on hold. Ask a friend or relative to check your doorstep to collect any deliveries. m Make copies of your itinerary, passport/IDs, credit cards, travel insurance and traveler check records in case something is lost or stolen. Give a copy to parents or friends and put a copy in your carry on luggage. m Organize addresses to write thank-you notes on the plane.

m Reserve car service to get to and from the airports.

24 hours to go

m Do any of the activities you want to participate in during your honeymoon require reservations? Tours, excursions, hot nightclubs and restaurants that are highly desirable may book far in advance.

m Check in with airlines

m Finalize all reservations.

m Get $100 cash, in small bills for tips and essentials. If you are traveling internationally, stop by your local bank and order the foreign currency. It will generally take a day or two, but your bank will more than likely have a better exchange rate than a foreign airport or your credit card company.

m Charge your phone, or anything else that needs charging. m Change your voicemail and email messages at work.
