Timeless Elegance... Aventura with a View

hen the clients moved from Philadelphia to Miami, they set out to create their dream home in their new city. A stranger who overheard the couple talking at a local restaurant handed them a napkin with the name of a designer. Six months later the clients contacted Arnold Schulman Design Group to make their dream home a reality. “They told me they wanted it to be timeless and special; the design had to be something that they would not get tired of. “

The designer wanted to compliment the stunning view by integrating it as the backdrop for the design of the living room. The space features a custom built entertainment unit made of Makassar ebony, cherry, and granite. Behind the large tight back sofa is a high gloss lacquer console table from Columbia. The art deco wood framed chairs are unique and bring character to the space without overwhelming the room. The center of the Living room is large crackled lacquer cocktail table that “was the one and only piece that Schulman insisted his clients take from their existing apartment.

The elevator space was designed to be a part of a grand apartment entrance. In order to make the space seamless from the moment you walk off the elevator, Schulman changed two existing doors in the area to frameless doors with a hidden hinge system so they become invisible in the wall. “ I then contracted a faux painter to paint the entire area in an exaggerated wood design including the elevator doors. With the addition of authentic art deco light fixtures and inlayed floor design the entrance gives visitors a wonderful first impression. The designer explained. - CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE -

A large scale Corbin bronze sculpture stands on a honey onyx and steel circular floor inlay and is the crossroads of the apartment. The ceiling mimics the shape on the floor with a circular coffer with down lighting over the sculpture as The coffer is part of an overall a continuous curved soffit system which highlights the various areas of the open space. - CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE -

In the dining room, cream leather chairs from Artistic Frame sit around a highly lacquered boat shaped wood pedestal table custom made in Columbia. The oval coffer above is done in a hand layered silver leaf finish and has a unique slab glass and iron chandelier over the table.

In the center of the custom wall system, made from Makassar Ebony and Cherry are 8 Lalique inserts. Schulman explains, “When I was looking at the plans of the unit I noticed that there was approximately a 2 foot empty space behind the wall in the dining room. Due to the shape of the outside of the building the architect thought it better to create a straight wall on the interior. I opened this space added 2 feet to the interior and designed a curved unit to utilize the space. - CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE -

(above) A honey onyx top with fiber optic back lighting and Bernhardt Stools makes the bar stand out in the open floor plan living area. The back wall of the bar was done in cherry wood panels that have floating glass shelves for display. Floss pendants that hang over the bar and complete the design. “Although, my clients are not big drinkers they like to entertain and the bar area becomes a perfect gathering spot before going out or having company over for dinner. Schulman Explains.

The den is a warm and cozy space for reading or just reflecting on the day’s events. To “warm” up the space, Schulman added Brazilian Cherry floors, a departure from the marble throughout the main areas. The walls are a combination of a rich faux leather finish and embossed lizard wall covering. With plush tufted leather sofa set on a silk oriental rug and surrounded by family photos the space feels comfortable and relaxed. - CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE -

(below) Makassar ebony veneer and Lalique crystal inserts on the entrance doors gives way to the opulence of the master suite master suite.

(right) The elegant master suite combines the charm of old world wall paneling finished in an antique silver finish with the contemporary style of the rest of the home. The bed, which is set into the paneled wall, is composed of a clean contemporary Wenge frame with luxurious tufted silk upholstery. Flanking the bed are nightstands that are high gloss ebony wood on stainless steel art deco style bases with original art deco bedside lamps. A Venetian glass chandelier hangs from the custom circular coffer that the designer mirrored to bring in the water view below. Facing lounge chairs with a tufted ottoman that doubles as a cocktail table comprise the seating area in front of the bed. The light colored Oriental rug, on which the chairs sit, creates a rich contrast to the dark Wenge wood floors.

(below to the left) The guest bedroom was designed with the client’s grandchildren in mind. The headboard wall is comprised of individual panels upholstered in soft ultra-suede fabric. The beds are done in gender neutral colored fabrics with fun patterns. “ I found an empty space in the wall so I created a circular niche with a light and floating shelf which became a perfect spot for my clients Lladro sculpture of children playing.” Schulman Explains

(below) “The powder room is the most important room in any home. This is the only room that you leave your guests alone in; this is the room that they judge you buy.” Schulman says. The room is fully upholstered in Dupioni silk and finished with a braided cord. The Vanity is a floating Wenge shelf with vessel sink and a floor to ceiling Wenge element to allow for the wall mounted faucet and etched mirror. A Murano Glass sculpture by Afro Celotto completes the vanity area. - CONTINUED (SOURCES) ON NEXT PAGE -

A SPECTACULAR FAMILY RETREAT ON SANIBEL ISLAND INTERIOR DESIGN Joe Fava, Fava Design Group Miami, 786.536.5380 PHOTOGRAPHY Kim Sargent, Palm Beach Gardens TEXT BY Elizabeth A. Nieves, Allied ASID

A beautiful day in Sanibel and a family from the cold Northeast are enjoying their spectacular retreat in a second home reminiscent of a South Beach boutique hotel. A look, a feeling, an accomplishment only achieved by careful planning, meticulous attention to detail, and the learning of the client’s wants and needs, as well as knowing the client themselves; the hallmark of Fava Design Group. By taking the time to understand what the clients were looking for, Joe Fava was able to discern their quest to create a fun, funky, user-friendly, family escape. The main living area was the catalyst for the design throughout the entirety of the home and the focal point fabric on the wall is where it all begins. A bright, cheery print of large leaves, Bottna fabric in green by Marimekko, provides a fabulous punch of color and brings some of the outside in. The bold graphic against the stark whites gives it an extra wow factor. The playful curves of the sofa set the tone of the space and these curvilenear shapes continue through out to help balance the angular lines on the architecture. - CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE -

(left page) The concept of bringing the outside in is continued in the bright, open breakfast area, where window treatments were forgone to showcase the lush tropical greenery outside. The smooth modern lines of the Saarinen table balance the organic tulip-shaped chairs in a fresh, green color that help give the feeling of being outside. An additional fun factor is achieved by the whimsical pieces atop the table, also adding more vibrant color.

The main dining area lends to a more sophisticated look and is highlighted by a dramatic oversized sphere lighting fixture by Schonbek. A unique feature of this light is that it is LED and can change colors to fit different moods and themes. As an added bonus, it can be seen from the outside of the home, making even more of a statement. The table boasts a granite top that extends to seat more when needed, and was finished with a satin finished metal base. The chairs, covered in a green woven fabric, are cantilevered, giving the illusion that the seats are floating above the floor. The satin metal at the base of the chair legs mimic that of the table base. The artwork is striking and graphic and offsets the more vibrant colors of the chairs and chandelier. The finishing touch is the soft lines of the window treatments that move the eye up, focusing on the amazing height of the space. - CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE -

(right page) The master bedroom boasts a nightstand and a sleek canopy bed with angular lines and shiny finishes, having a glass top on the nightstand and metal accents used on both pieces. Softening these hard edges was realized by Fava using elegant and airy sheers for the canopy and repeating the same sheers for window coverings. The rich color of the wood adds to the warmth and softness. The chair and ottoman are accented in the plum color used in the theater room, which continues the comforting color motif through the entire third floor. Soft plush carpeting in the warm sand tone mimics the sandy beach as seen from the balcony doors overlooking the ocean, once again lending a feel of resort-like comfort and serenity.

Moving up to the third floor, we have the owner’s own private retreat that includes a theatre room, master bedroom, his & her master baths, and master sitting area. Although the husband wanted to keep the palette in these rooms the same as those used in the downstairs spaces, the wife was looking for a warmer, cozier hues. As demonstrated by the sofa and pillows in the theatre room, warmer colors prevailed. Soft tones of sand and luscious plums were incorporated. Although the

palette changed, the continuation of the curvilinear elements below helped marry these areas with the first and second floors. Keeping up with the idea of fun, round pillows added a playful pop in a deep hue; both pillows and ottoman were done with fabric from Designers Guild. More artwork accents this space with the first repeating round shapes, while the taller one adds height. A sitting area is included and again mimics the circular shapes against the more geometric features.

In the master bathrooms, a different feeling for each space was achieved by using more angular and geometrical lines in His bathroom, and softer curvilinear in Hers. In both spaces there is the natural feel given by the mellow sand colors of the walls, cabinetry & countertops, as well as the floor tiles. Another explosive and fun pop of the plum colors are incorporated in accent tiles throughout both spaces. - CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE -

The circles on the tiles in one of the master bathrooms add visual interest and harmonic contrast against the more angular counterparts of the neutral tile backgrounds. The objective of making this home an oasis is again fulfilled by the deep Jacuzzi tub, with flowing sheers on the window above. The walk in shower has a built in seat with hand held shower.

(top left) Going back down we have an interesting multi-functional space that brings the term Family fun to a whole new level. The guest suite/ home office is a riotous combination of vibrant colors that only the word cheerful can describe. This well thought out space has four bunk beds hidden behind these fantastically citrus hued wall panels. When the beds are put away, a desk pulls out for any and all to use. The polka dot pattern on the desk chair in a cool melon color leads us back to curves seen in all the other spaces. The room is finished with citrus yellow wall paint, and a lime countertop on the built- in drawer unit. The window above is finished with more sheers to allow plenty of natural light into this sunny room.

(bottom left) The guest bedroom has the same jubilant color scheme as the suite and offers a more adventurous juxtaposition of those mouthwatering hues. The first thing you can see when entering, and even in passing the room, is the artwork, a fiery hot piece that really captures your attention. The white leather bed serves to cool things off a bit, with custom fabrics from Osborne & Little and Designers Guild used on bedding as well as the chair. The shag carpet grounds the room, and soft buff wall paper with polka dots gives a neutral background to all the action. Finishing touches include a lacquered dresser in white, glass side table in transparent with orange, and lighting fixtures in playful sphere shapes.

(right) Completing the master suite, a sitting area was placed near the window for the best possible views. It includes a sofa with a chaise lounge and the television placed to the right of it. The sofa is done up in a rich Merlot with the plum and sands continued on the pillows that coordinate with fabrics from master bed and ottoman chair combo. The richness of the lush fabric on the sofa is balanced by the sleek glass coffee table which also incorporates the finishes of the nightstand with glass and metal accents. The artwork behind the sofa is another happy profusion of color. An overall sense of soothing tranquility permeates this entire floor.

Fava believes his repeat business is due to his work ethic and building relationships. Having the commitment to listening to each individual client and working with them to create their space, because at the end of the day the designer goes to his own home and leaves the client to enjoy theirs; Joseph Fava used his expertise and creative eye to bring together all the elements needed, bringing to life the perfect family holiday home. - END -.
