The Rascals: Reunited After 40 Years oThe “Good Lovin’” singers will be reuniting for the first time in decades to perform on their new tour, which just so happens to be making a three-day stop at Hard Rock Live. The New Jersey “blue-eyed soul” group released a plethora of top ten singles during the 60’s, making them a staple for music lovers across the world. Hits like “Good Lovin’,” “Groovin’,” “People Got to Be Free,” and

guymag.net

“A Beautiful Morning” are what landed the soul group a spot in the Rock and Roll Half of Fame in 1997. Now, the band’s original lineup has reunited for the first time in 40 years in support of their newest tour, “Once Upon A Dream.” 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 1 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314. oSteve Martin is a man of many talents. In 2009, the actor/comedian surprised fans when he played the banjo alongside the bluegrass band, Steep Canyon Rangers, in a live broadcast of “A Prairie Home Companion.” The statement was certainly surprising, but what was more shocking was how well Martin did on the banjo. He continued to tour with them on select dates for their 20092010 tour, as well as a 2011 television appearance on UK’s critically acclaimed music show, “Later with Jools Holland.” His performances with the band earned the collaboration an Entertainers of the Year award at the International Bluegrass Music Association Awards in 2011. Their collaborative record with Martin released the same year, “Rare Bird Alert,” debuted at #1 on the Billboard’s Bluegrass chart and at #43 on the Billboard Top 200. 8 p.m. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. 701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach, 33401. William Glackens Exhibition oAmerican realist painter William Glackens was an influential artist who also doubled as one of the founders of the Ashcan School of American Art. Glackens’ style and subject matter changed throughout the course of his life, starting with daily life in New York and Paris, circa Pre-World War I. Later his work evolved into a brighter collection, influenced strongly by Renoir. Although he eventually distanced himself from the Ashcan school and The Eight, he is still considered an integral part of the realist movement. 10 a.m. Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale. 1 E Las Olas Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33301.

TRAVEL

Minneapolis, Minnesota The Mid-West Opens Arms to Gays BY ROBERT ELIAS DEATON

o

The roar you heard echoing in the air last week through much of the Mid-West came from a crowd of thousands that had gathered on the lawn of the state Capitol of Minnesota. It was quite an historical moment when Governor Mark Dayton signed a law legalizing gay marriage in the state effective August 1. When Minnesota became the 12th state in the nation to formalized same-sex marriage, it was a gamechanger in the Mid-West. Just two years ago, there was a failed push to pass a constitutional amendment banning same-sex weddings. Now, the wedding planners have switched into high gear. So too have the bars, clubs, restaurants and gyms. Minneapolis and its twin-city St. Paul sit on the banks of the Mississippi River in a culturally diverse area. It was once the world’s flour milling capital and a timber giant. Today, it is still the home to General Mills, one of the world’s largest food companies. Translation: there is a lot of space in Minnesota, so a rental car is required to cover the turf. There is a daily four-hour non-stop flight to Minneapolis from Fort Lauderdale on Delta Airlines that conveniently leaves at 3:35 p.m. each day. It is a short 12-mile trip into the city (average taxi fare $40.00). Hotels abound in the City of Lakes, with the hip favorite: The Foshay—a W Hotel (821 Marquette Ave S), a landmark that soars into the skyline and gives chic an entirely new name. If the $300 a night room rate is a little on the high side for Daddy, suggest finding digs at the Hilton Garden Inn Minneapolis where $199.00 gets you a large room with a sweeping view of the magnificent city skyline. When it’s time to hit the town and dance into guymag.net

sunrise, head to The Saloon (830 Hennepin Ave-9th & Hennepi) and find a younger crowd who are good looking and know all the right steps. Find strippers there on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, and expect lean, smooth, and muscular cookie cutter hotties. For something more levi/leather oriented, the Minneapolis Eagle (515 Washington Ave S) is part of a complex that includes the Underground Dance Club (501 Washington Ave S) and a Bolt Video Bar (513 Washington Ave S). The leather community in Minnesota is a strong one, with the accent on fun more than traditional straps, chains and whips. There is a rather classy strip joint in town called the Brass Rail (422 Hennepin Ave), which at one time was about as trashy as they come. It’s now been totally remodeled and is safe, clean and sexy. The joint attracts men and women, and all seem to coexist in a Chippendale’s-style atmosphere, which has its own sexy charm. The Firm (1010 North 2nd Ave at Colfax) is one of those workout plants where high energy seems to come pumped through the AC. Though this fitness club’s main attraction is a full day/night of classes, the nice-sized gym and free weight area does nicely as a home-away-from-home for the more physical among us. The Mall of America (60 E Broadway), in nearby Bloomington, Minnesota, has over 500 stores and some 2,775,000 square feet of floor space, making it the second largest mall in the United States. (The largest is in King of Prussia, PA.) Even at second best, the Mall of America is SO big that it would take over an entire week to explore all of its stores. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and he shops at Mall of America.

NUTRITION

Pick Your Poison BY ANDY KRESS

o

Food poisoning is one of the largest common infectious diseases next to the common cold. While food poisoning comes in many different varieties, all have special unpleasant qualities about them. Hospitals report an average of 6-10 million cases a year and this number reflects only a fraction of the estimated real cases that go unreported. 9,000 of these cases end in death. Food poisoning is a general term for the 250 ways food can be contaminated. The term applies to gastroenteritis and the occasional nervous system complications resulting from bacterial or viral contamination of food. Infestations of raw and undercooked meats with parasites also fall within this category. There are many ways these diseases can spread to your food before it goes on your plate. It can be contaminated during the harvesting process. Unwashed pesticides and fertilizers accompanied by rodent and bug problems during the harvesting process can be a major contributing factor to an attack of food poisoning. Products can also be contaminated during the packing process, with unclean containers another major contributing factor when it comes to spreading infectious diseases. Finally it can also be contaminated during the transport of any product. Symptoms of food poisoning include diarrhea and vomiting. Abdominal cramping and headaches may persist at this point and a fever may break out. These symptoms usually last from 12-36 hours depending on the severity of the amount of consumption of the contaminated food and the type of infectious disease. Botulism is one of the most common food poisons particularly among home canned goods, contaminated vegetables, fruits, condiments and fishes. Symptoms appear within 18-36 hours and can include muscle incoordination, difficulty in chewing, swallowing and breathing, and may increase to respiratory failure and even death. E Coli is another popular disease coming from undercooked meats or unpasteurized dairy products. Salmonella is a chart-topping disease found in infected meat producing animals, undercooked poultry products, raw milk, raw eggs and egg products. Symptoms occur within 12-48 hours and usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever and abdominal pain and cramping. These symptoms can last from one to four days. Trichinella is another common disease stemming

guymag.net

from undercooked pork that has been fed contaminated meat. Symptoms of trichinella include fever, diarrhea and respiratory pain and problems. Staphylococcus Aureus is commonly spread by food handlers who have skin infections that touch others foods before eating. Symptoms show up quickly, within 2-8 hours and cause severe nausea and vomiting. This can be accompanied by abdominal cramps, headaches and fever. Fighting back against these infectious diseases requires both good nutrition and bed rest. When you feel confident that your system has settled down and you are ready to handle ingesting foods again, gradually introduce the BRAT diet. BRAT is short for bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Use this diet 24-48 hours after contracting one of these diseases. After 48 hours, start to introduce non-spiced foods to your diet, such as chicken and mashed potatoes. When you are sure the body has begun to acclimate itself back to enjoying food again then incorporate fresh fruits and vegetables, along with healthy grains and cereals, dairy products and cheeses. Lean cuts of meats can then be introduced back into the diet for optimal health. Being aware of what you put in your mouth should be on your mind at all times, but when it comes to infectious diseases you can ingest, be exceptionally cautious. Taking a few extra minutes to be sure your food is safe can keep you from a few days sick in bed.
