We/Are/Stud

Celebrating Masculinity This Spring By Rodney McMann

o

This spring, men’s swimwear and underwear designers Voon Lai and Jonathan Cheng are stepping up to bat with a brand new Stud line, We/Are/Stud. The theme for their latest collection is

masculinity, and it is available now at LAJock.com. Are you man enough? Guy Magazine spoke with the dynamic designers. Why celebrate masculinity? We believe masculinity is a big part of what the modern man is about.

Who is the model featured in the campaign? His name is Yadier Rodriguez. He was shot by Abel Cruz of Photo Studio Miami.

Wouldn’t you agree that anything ‘designer’ (such as designer briefs) leans toward a feminine sensibility? Even burly guys will wear designer briefs if they’re made to look masculine.

What does Yadier say about ‘Stud’? Besides the fact that he has a great look and a hot body?

The spring collection features a new version of Stud’s popular ‘Wear It Proud’ brief. What does ‘Wear It Proud’ mean to you? It’s a declaration to be comfortable with who you are. Even more than that: Be proud of who you are. Whether it’s your sexuality, background, ethnicity, beliefs, or principles: own it and love it.

14

What does it mean to be a ‘Stud’ man? It doesn’t matter if you are straight, gay, white, black, Latino, or Asian, ‘Stud’ is about celebrating diversity, individuality, and having pride in yourself. Visit LAJock.com.

Eligible Bachelors, Latrice [Deleted Expletive] Royale, and Johnny’s $3 Tuesdays By Rick Karlin

Leor and Ryan at New York Grilled Cheese Co.’s drag fundraiser boys), but couldn’t get a parking space. The lot was filled to the max, and at 10 p.m. no less! Guess the early bird does get (to fondle) the worm. Dante James says bring “B2k Fridays” back. Silvio Carvana, David Laski, and David Hopkins took a virtual trip to Long Island at Infinity Lounge with $6 iced teas on Tuesday. Also on Tuesdays, it’s all ’90s after 9 at Rumors Bar and Grill with bartender Steve keeping folks like Alan (“Air Mattress”) Mathews, Alan Adrian, Richard (“Right on Target”) Henager, Nolan Albrecht, Willow Bierce, and Stephanie Corman lubricated. Seen at Alibi: Carl Marzola, flashing smiles and telling the boys to bring their own drink chips. Sari Puspa, Louise Ouellette, and Kenneil Ramsay all love the great deals at Wine Down Wednesday at Dapur Asian Tapas and Lounge. Julieta Romero (girl!), Richard Arroyo, and Bob Deutsch enjoyed watching the boys towel-off at Boardwalk. I won a free brunch certificate during Pridefest, so I stopped in for brunch at Beefcake’s, and I have to say the corned beef sliders were spicy—both ways. /theguymag

Rick Schmutzler, former actor/singer and owner of New York’s Rock Bar and Gym Sports Bar in NYC and WeHo, just bought a place in WilMa—as in Wilton Manors—as a getaway spot. He’s single and looking to mingle, folks. We spotted Paul Salmon, bar back/ security guy at Alibi chatting with Mark Duane Wilson, David Goulart, and Jorge Martinez on St. Patty’s Day. Speaking of which: Tom Carlin—no relation, different spelling—says his friends tell him he had a blast on St. Patty’s Day! He’s still sore from, what he calls “dancing.” If you haven’t stopped in to see Leor at New York Grilled Cheese Co. (adjacent to and behind Nuts About Yogurt) you must try the pork sundae. Carla Crotches is planning to head over to Rosie’s Bar and Grill for Easter brunch; she reports the burgers are almost a religious experience. Suzanne Sousa from DUB hub and Steve Scott enjoyed the show tunes at Village Pub on Tuesday. If the men coming out of Steel Gym (formerly Island City Health and Fitness) seem a bit riper than usual, it’s because the showers and steam room are out of commission while renovations are being done. (They might even be complete by the time you read this so you can soothe those sore muscles again.) The cast of Trannie Palace at Bill’s on Wilton Drive has been busy. Misty Eyez, Amanda Austin, and Athena Dion all won Shelley Novak Awards in SoBe, and Nicole Halliwell was first runner up in Miss Fort Lauderdale ComedyQueen pageant, and will be headed to nationals. To Noel Embry-Riddle, Daniel Hardin, and Lauren Burrell: I have just three words for you: Latrice— Mother****ing—Royale at Boom! Speaking of Boom: “A Night at Studio 54” returns by popular demand, the weekend of April 19 to 21. Is Tuesday the new Friday? THE WEEK

The Week 3/28 to 4/3/2013

Maroon 5 (3/29)

Take All ‘8’, ‘Priscilla’ of the Desert, & Easter Bonnets Galore! By Grant James

Thursday

3/28

Jekyll and Hyde: Two for the Price of One oThe classic story of the fight between good and evil is brought to life in this brand new musical production of the Gothic tale of the saintly Dr. Jekyll and his sinister alter-ego, Mr. Hyde. Former “American Idol” performer Constantine Maroulis stars in this thrilling touring pre-Broadway production, alongside “Nobody’s Supposed to be Here” R&B singer Deborah Cox. The Broadway debut will be in April, so catch it before it hits the Great White Way. At 8 p.m., at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts (701 Okeechobee Blvd, West Palm Beach).

____________________ Friday

3/29

Give Me the Whole “8” oA story that is as timely as today’s headlines, the play “8”—created by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (“Milk,” “J. Edgar”)—delves into the ongoing marriage equality

debate as exemplified by California’s Proposition 8, which forbids same-sex marriage in the Golden State. FAU presents an ambitious production of this historic case, with all proceeds going to Broadway Impact, a grassroots organization comprised of theater artists and fans who support of marriage equality. At 7 p.m., at FAU University Theatre (777 Glades Road, Boca Raton).

He’s Got the Moves Like Jagger oDrop-dead-gorgeous singer Adam Levine is a triple threat: he sings, he acts, and he has the perfect blend of “boy-next-door” meets “motorcycle gang rapist” going for him. Maroon 5 has been in the spotlight since their 2002 debut album, “Songs About Change.” Their sound has evolved (like the dancy 2010 collaboration with Ke$ha on “Moves Like Jagger”), but still possesses the vibe and ’tude you (and dozens of Hollywood starlets) have come to love. Stop masturbating to his “American Horror Story” cameo and see Levine in all of his glory, in person. Opening act Owl City. At 8 p.m., at the BB&T Center (1 Panther Parkway, Sunrise). Is That a Horse Under Your Saddle (or are You Just Glad to See Me?)

In Your Easter Bonnet (with All the Drag Upon It)

oEquestrian lovers, rejoice—the 2013 Florida Derby is approaching at full gallop. Gulfstream Park hosts this year’s race, an exciting and engaging American pastime: betting real life hard-earned money on a competition between animals. The cute jockeys are an added bonus. At 12:30 p.m., at Gulfstream Park (901 S Federal Hwy, Hallandale Beach).

oLips, the ultimate in drag dining, host its infamous Easter Lunch and Dinner shows, with $23.50 getting you a three-course meal, featuring your choice of champagne, Mimosas, or Bloody Marys. Come in your best Easter Bonnet for a chance to win fabulous prizes. Girl! (1421 E Oakland Park Blvd, Fort Lauderdale).

The Children of the Night: What Beautiful Stuff They Make oFort Lauderdale’s growing art community, known as Fat Village, brings one of its most successful events back for a second time, the Night Owl Market. The event hosts over 60 local vendors, selling everything from handcrafted goods to vintage clothing (and everything in between), and takes place in conjunction with the monthly art walk held in this ambitious new district of Downtown Fort Lauderdale. All proceeds go directly to funding Flagler Garden, an upcoming community garden and event space. At 7 p.m. (500 NW 1 Ave., Fort Lauderdale).

I Want a Singer with a Slow Hand oEric Clapton—founding member of classic rock group “Cream” and performer of such rock standards as “Layla”—is considered one of the biggest and most influential musicians ever (he came up #2 in the Time Magazine 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time). His work has earned him seventeen Grammy Awards, and numerous other accolades. After struggling with alcoholism, drug addiction, and the death of his son, Clapton still remains a key figure in rock history after 50 years. He is now touring in support of his 20th studio album, “Old Sock,” and will appear with The Wallflowers (hello, Jakob Dylan!). At 8 p.m., at Hard Rock Live (1 Seminole Way, Hollywood).

Here’s looking at you, kid. At 10 a.m., at Rosie’s (2449 Wilton Dr., Wilton Manors).

Tony Who? It’s the Carbonell Awards oSouth Florida’s own version of the Tony Awards— the Carbonell Awards—return for their 37th year. The awards show honors local theater productions both big and small, and includes some stellar performances. Continuing their annual tradition, the Carbonells will award three student scholarships of $1,000 each to one student from Broward, MiamiDade, and Palm Beach counties. At 7:30 p.m., at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (201 SW 5 Ave., Fort Lauderdale).

Author! Author! oThe Stonewall National Museum and Archives welcomes Gregg Shapiro (Guy Magazine, Florida Agenda) and Neil del la Flor as part of its Distinguished Author Series, to celebrate National Poetry Month. Shapiro, a well-known poet and the author of “Gregg Shapiro: 77” and “Protection,” has poetry and fiction published in such literary journals as guymag.net

“Beltway Poetry Quarterly” and “Bloom,” and the anthologies “Windy City Queer,” “Mondo Barbie,” “Reclaiming the Heartland,” and “Best Gay Poetry: 2008.” Miami-based writer, photographer, and fashion designer Neil del la Flor’s first book, “Almost Dorothy,” won the Marsh Hawk Press Poetry Prize. At 7 p.m. (1300 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale).

Jazz (Piano) Hands oCanadian singer and pianist Diana Krall is one of today’s most successful contemporary Jazz artists. The two-time Grammy Award-winner’s albums fly high near the top of the Billboard Jazz charts, and she has sold 15 million albums worldwide. That’s a lot of sultry, contralto ballads. Krall is touring in support of the recent release of her tenth studio album, “Glad Rag Doll.” Catch her at 8 p.m., at the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami).

That Queen Better Not Track Sand Up in Here oAdapted from the 1994 film, “The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” the musical “Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” tells the heartwarming story of two drag queens and a transsexual who are contracted to perform a drag show deep in the Australian desert. As they travel via their purple bus (named “Priscilla”) from Sydney, the three friends encounter a series of challenges. The original “To Wong Fu, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar” is a crowd-pleaser that will leave you laughing (and checking your makeup). At 8 p.m., at the Adrienne Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Blvd., Miami). /theguymag

This spoof from 2011 was recently uploaded to YouTube, as a protest to media coverage of the Steubenville Rape Case, which largely sympathized with the accused—and now convicted—rapists. The similarities between the lopsided media coverage and this Onion spoof are, shall we say, ironic.

New York Grilled Cheese Co. By Richard David Chamberlain The much-anticipated opening of New York Grilled Cheese Co. took place on Monday, March 11, and of course we were first in line. (Would you expect anything less from the gastronome of Guy Magazine?) You might call us something of a grilled cheese snob, which is true to a certain extent. After all, during outings to Manhattan, we have been known to make a special side trip to visit the Queens Kickshaw for its cheesy sandwich eruptions. So trotting up Wilton Drive to explore this new restaurant, housed in the back half of Nuts About Yogurt, was far simpler. With a counter, three tables, and a wall of bench-seating, the New York Grilled Cheese Co. is not a large place, and it has a menu to match. There are seven grilled cheese sandwiches offered , priced at $7.95 to $9.95 (which may seem a little place with his papa, recommended the Manhaton the high side, but this is the Drive, and these tan Grilled Mac ‘n Cheese ($8.50) and scored with are HUGE sandwiches, so value is the watchword a gooey mess of comfort. TRAVEL

Biloxi and Jackson, MS Where Redneck Is on the Menu Every Day By Robert Elias Deaton

o

“Gay” and “Mississippi” are two words that don’t often find themselves in the same sentence. And when they do, it usually means trouble of some sort. It was, after all, only last March when police in Jackson, the state’s capital, cancelled the LGBT Pride march by proclaiming that it is “illegal to be openly-gay” in Mississippi. And that is exactly the reason why we recommend a visit to the Magnolia State. Not only is it incredibly beautiful, particularly as we enter Spring, but the few gay businesses and clubs that have managed to buck the tide need our support, and they need it ASAP. Mississippi is the state where, in 1929, Harry A. Cole Sr. invented Pine Sol. It’s home to the world’s largest pecan nursery (in Lumberton), the largest cactus plantation (in Edwards), and the largest cottonwood tree planation (in Issaquena County). For those who like the beach and water activities, Biloxi, on Mississippi’s Gulf Coast, offers the largest man-made beach in the world—all 28 miles of it along the region known as the Redneck Riviera. There are twelve casinos including the Beau Rivage Resort (875 Beach Blvd.), plenty of fishing (freshwater in the rivers and streams that feed the Back Bay, and saltwater in the Mississippi Sound), golfing at a dozen major 18-hole courses including the Oaks Golf Club (home to several PGA tournaments), and a bevy of Creole-Cajun restaurants (our favorite is 200 North Beach Restaurant with a view of the Bay of St. Louis). Biloxi is also the home of the Just Us Lounge (906 Division St.), the only gay nightlife option along the 150-mile coast between New Orleans and Mobile. It is a super festive catch-all club where men and women hold equal sway, and tourists mix with locals as if no one had a bigoted

bone in any body. This safe haven is to be applauded for its eclectic appeal and the incredible mural of Southern mansions and landscapes that wraps around the exterior of the building. Toward the middle of the state, you’ll find Jackson—Mississippi’s population hub. It’s here that you’ll find the Governor’s Mansion (300 E Capitol St)—the second oldest continually-occupied governor’s mansion in the nation, the Mississippi State Capitol (400 High St)—a beautiful Beaux-Arts limestone building completed in 1903, the Mississippi Museum of Art (380 S Lamar St )—with collections of American art that include Georgia O’Keefe and James McNeill Whistler, and the Mississippi Farmers Market (929 High St), open every Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. for fresh fruits, vegetables and an assortment of crafts shops. The Hilton Garden Inn (235 W Capitol St) is centrally-located to all the historical elements of the city, and is, in fact, on the National Register of Historic Places, where its origins as the King Edward Hotel pays homage to its history since 1923. Despite its current name, taxi drivers and locals still call it the “King Edward.” The hotel is convenient to the two downtown gay clubs, the more popular of which is Dick and Jane’s (206 W Capitol St), a traditional half-dance, half-pool hall bar where guys and dolls share the space. Nearby is Club City Lights (220 W Amite St), with a mostly African-American clientele who get down and dirty on the dance floor between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. Jack’s Construction Site (425 N Mart Plaza), or JC’s as it’s locally dubbed, is a strip mall kinda place, and Club Metro Reloaded, way out on Highway 80 W attracts the alternative metrosexual hangout of choice. Rednecks rejoice. guymagyoutube

Losing Energy? Did You Have Your Carnitine Today? By Andy Kress

As each of us ages, it seems inevitable that our bodies slow down and produce less energy. With each passing year, the signs of aging or the degeneration of the body become increasing evident. If you are gay and male, the last thing you want to be told is that you’re slowing down and aging. We get it. Fortunately, Mother Nature doesn’t get the last laugh here. That special treat belongs to carnitine. Carnitine is an amino acid that works wonders on maintaining the mitochondria, the true powerhouse behind all the cells of the body. The process of creating cell energy is known as cellular respiration, and the mitochondria is where it all happens. Keeping the mitochondria at its best, therefore, means increased sustained energy, with shades of youth not far behind. The mitochondria reside in every cell within your body, converting food into the energy we use to operate. As we age, these power cells become less and less efficient. As they do, cellular waste begins to grow within the cell, killing the cells or organ more quickly. As the amount of functioning mitochondria decrease, the “symptoms “of aging become more prevalent, mainly due to the fact that the mitochondria are continually burning fatty acids to produce energy. This constant need for fuel and the burning energy release large bursts of oxidants into your system. These oxidant compounds in turn start to damage the mitochondria and the cells around them. This steady assault on the body soon leads to the dysfunction and breakdown of all of our tissues and organs. Unless, of course, you take your carnitine. Multiple studies have shown that supplementing your diet with carnitine keeps your mitochondria healthy and prevents the breakdown of these cells. More than any wonder drug, carnitine performs miracles and is ridiculously cheap to buy. A win-win, if ever there was one. Carnitine is a fat-transporting compound that is essential for normal heart function, the organ that keeps our cardiovascular system suppling blood and

energy to all parts of the body. Carnitine is a great preventive measure to fight heart disease, one of America’s leading health problems. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes are two other major health problems that can be reduced or prevented with proper carnitine function in the body. Even the growing obesity epidemic can be helped with carnitine supplements. Fat and its girth help increase a syndrome that doctors call “diabesity.” Recent studies have shown that supplementing carnitine helps the mitochondria stay at their peak of utilizing energy and removing waste from the cell, playing a critical role in reducing the impact of the number of growing cases of “diabesity.” Other benefits of taking carnitine include increased muscle strength and improved blood flow, which is great for those who practice routine exercise. Carnitine also lowers concentrations of leptin, a cytokine that triggers a fat-induced inflammation. As always, your overall health should be your constant goal. Taking care of the power sources that convert the energy in every cell in your body is a great place to start. Even if we can’t stop the years from slipping by, we can stop the outward and inward effects of time. The answer is carnitine, and every health food store and supermarket has bottles of this unsung miracle. Now the secret is yours; spread the word.
