THE WEEK

Cher, Blue Man Group and a Canoe Race

____________________ Thursday

5/15

Never Say Goodbye to Cher o Like an emotionally dependent lover, Cher has never been quite able to say farewell and mean it. Each new concert is a retirement concert. Lips understands the irony and beauty in that. Two nights before Cher’s already sold-out concert, Lips presents “Never Say Farewell—A Tribute to Cher.” Fan favorite songs such as “Way of Love,” “Bang Bang,” “All I Really Want to Do,” “Gypsy,” “Tramps and Thieves,” and “Dark Lady” will bring back great memories and also help to celebrate Cher’s upcoming birthday on May 20. The show, hosted by Nicolette, will include several of Lips leading ladies, including Cher look-a-like performances by Alexis Couture, Shelly Michaels and Franchesque Richards. All proceeds will benefit the Smart Ride. 7 p.m. Lips. 1421 E Oakland Park Blvd, Oakland Park, 33334.

5/16

Blue Man Group oNot to be confused with Blue Boy Group—a wild trio of slutty South Florida twinks—Blue Man Group is a bizarre yet popular theatrical performance group. They mix elements of performance art, rave culture and rock into one wild and award—winning theatrical performance. Each performance stars a trio of humanoid characters called Blue Men, played by actor-musicians who wear bald caps and vibrant blue makeup. The perplexing performances have become a pop cultural phenomenon, maybe most famously used as a significant plot device on Arrested Development. Find out what all the fuss is about tonight in Miami. 8 p.m. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. 1300 Biscayne Blvd, Miami, 33132.

Lady Antebellum oIt’s a night for trios, with Grammy award-winning threesome Lady Antebellum bringing their North American “Take Me Downtown Tour” to the Hard Rock. Lady Antebellum is best known for their pervasive and career defining 2010 single Need You Now. In that song, a drunk person gives in to their neediest attachment issues and begs for their lover’s presence. Starting as a country group, Lady THE WEEK continues on page 47 guymag.net

THE WEEK Antebellum has since crossed-over and reached mass appeal. Need You Know won the Grammy award for Song of the Year and their popularity has since been increasing. Tonight they play all the hits. 8 p.m. Hard Rock Live. 5747 Seminole Way, Hollywood, 33314.

5/17

Canoe Racing oThere’s some rather long-standing Wilton Manors traditions that predated the gentrification of our little “Island City”/Gayborhood. One of those is the 23rd Annual Island City Canoe Race. This year’s race begins at Colahatchee Park Boat Ramp and ends at Richardson Historic Park. Teams of 10 are invited to participate. Immediately following the race, the 67th birthday of the city will be celebrated at Richardson Historic Park. The celebration includes barbeque, beverages, cake, and music. Who could believe that Wilton Manors, one of the grandest gayborhoods in the United States, is now 67! 10 a.m. Begins at Colahatchee/ ends at Richardson Park. 1975 NE 15th Ave, Wilton Manors, 33305.

Aqua Sounds Benefit Concert oThe Aqua Foundation for Women will be hosting its first ever “Aqua Sounds” concert with headliner Beverly McClellan of NBC’S The Voice. All proceeds will benefit Aqua’s LGBTQ Youth Homelessness Initiative. Mc Clellean is quickly becoming the newest cornerstone of rock ‘n’ roll. With her stunning power and range and Etta James-esque presence, McClellan has captured the music world by storm since her performance on The Voice. Tonight she will sing with the proceeds benefitting the epidemic of LGBTQ homelessness in Miami (40% of the homeless population in Miami-Dade is LGBTQ). 7 p.m. Grand Central. 697 N Miami Ave, Miami, 33136.

5/19

Avalon oAs a part of the weekly Theatre Under the Stars festivities, Avalon will be performing on Hollywood Beach. The traditional Irish group is a favorite of Irish festivals. They recently performed at the St. Patrick’s Day Irish Festival sponsored by the South Florida Emerald Society. Bring your green beer and Irish luck for this sure-to-be beautiful evening. 7:30 p.m. Hollywood Beach Theater 100 Johnson St, Hollywood, 33020.

5/20

The 1975 oFeatured at Coachella, this indie/alternative English band has been making a name for themselves since they released four different EPs. Their debut self-titled album became a smash in England. Influenced by Talking Heads, Prince, My Bloody Valentine, and Michael Jackson, 1975’s musical style has been hailed by magazines such as Pitchfork and Paste. According to lead singer Matthew Healy, their greatest influence is the oeuvre of filmmaker John Hughes. Bring your favorite angsty 1980s teenager and enjoy the music. 7:30 p.m. Culture Room. 3045 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, 33306.

____________________

Cher oIf you were lucky enough to secure tickets for Cher’s D2K tour before it sold out, tonight is your night. Though the BB&T center is big, the ultimate diva’s voice will greet you wherever you sit. Remember, this is a sold out show, so if you’re heading to the venue with a pocket full of dreams, be prepared for scalpers. 8 p.m. BB&T Center. 1 Panther Pkwy, Sunrise, 33323.

afternoon then staring at baskets? Fortunately, there’s plenty on display at the Men’s Life Drawing Event. Each artist must gaze at a nude male form for a lengthy period of time. Twice a month, a fun group of guys get together to draw two nude male models for both short and long poses. All levels are welcome. Bring art supplies for drawing, painting, charcoal, pencil, or even watercolor. Guest artists from the community will also be in attendance. 2 p.m. Push Fitness. 1098 NE 45th St, Oakland Park, 33334.

Live Entertainment at Dada oHusband and wife duo You Knew Me When started touring in June of 2012. Even with plans for touring for only a full year, they haven’t stopped. They’ve been serving up their original music throughout the US and Canada ever since. Their first studio album You, Me, and the Rest of the World showcases their indie-rock infused ballads with a collection of stirring, pulsating beats. 11 p.m. Dada. 52 North Swinton Ave, Delray Beach, 33444.

TRAVEL

Gay Days Orlando by

Rick Karlin

o

If you grew up going on family vacations at Disney World and the surrounding theme parks you no doubt have fond memories of those trips. Or if you’re like me, you mostly remember your parents bickering because your father wanted to drive as far as possible in one day, trying to cut the number of nights we’d have to stay in a motel. But once we got into the park, all the bickering ended as the entire family took in the majesty that is Disney World. Sure it’s a manufactured majesty, but majesty all the same. Whether your memories are good, bad or somewhere in the middle, you now have a chance to make new ones with Gay Days Orlando, June 3-9. Gay Days began in 1991 when the LGBT community was encouraged to visit Disney World on the first Saturday in June and wear red so as a show of Pride. Nearly 3,000 took part in that first event. Since its inception, the event has endured attacks by the right-wing American Family Association and other organizations. For many years, it was pretty much ignored by Orlando’s hotel/motel industry and the press (except for coverage of the protests). As the event grew, it became increasingly clear

50

guymag.net

theguymag

theguymag

that some organization was needed. In 1998, GayDays.com launched, and a year later joined the Orlando/Orange County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Gay Days now attracts more than 150,000 GLBT celebrants and their allies who pump an estimated $100 million into the local economy. As the saying goes, “Money talks, BS walks”. Today, the parks offer expanded operating hours, and fireworks displays welcoming us and hotels compete to be the host of the event. This year, Doubletree Orlando at Seaworld is the official host hotel and the site of the week-end’s 25 pool parties. The hotel has just had a multimillion dollar makeover and boasts three pools. The Gay Days ticket center is located in the hotel, as is the Gay Days Expo. Passes for the pool parties at the host hotel are sold for three day, four day and five day attendance. Daily events passes are about $5-10, if bought in advance, double that if bought at the door. While outsiders will need to pay for admission to the pool parties, they are free for the hotel’s registered guests. All of the parties feature top-name DJs spinning poolside. Day time parties at the main Lagoon pool are $35 advance/$60 at event (all prices that follow are listed are for the three day passes), evening parties are guymagtube

$65/$95. Bear parties are held at the Lakes pool daily ($20/$45) and nightly ($50/$75.) “Girls at Gay Days” parties, held at the Key West pool are $20/$45 for days, $30/$60 in the evenings. A number of other events take place during the weekend. For most, there are two ticket price levels, general admission and VIP. General admission tickets usually have a cash bar, VIP tickets include and open bar and other perks. The official kick-off party is on Tuesday, June 3 at The Parliament House. Tickets are $15/$20 and include music, a fashion show, and special performances by Parliament House entertainers and this year’s Miss Gay Days Pageant contestants. Wednesday, June 4 brings the Miss Gay Days 2014 pageant, hosted by Coco Montrese, of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Frank Marino’s “Divas Las Vegas”. Tickets are $20/$27, if you want to enter the contest, there is a $75 contestant fee. “A Taste of Gay Days” on Friday, June 6, features tastings of fine wines, beers, and spirits and hors d’ouerves, dancing and silent auction. Tickets are $25/$30. Also, for those who want to party late into the night, that same night the “Unzipped Black & Blue Ball” will be held at the hotel, running from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. costing $20/$25. During the weekend there will be a production of “Pillow Talk”, a play by Peter Tolan, held at the Doubletree. Tickets for this event are $15 - $25,

guymag.net

with tickets for the Sunday evening performance only available by advance sale. On Saturday June 7 there will also be a night of stand-up comedy for the girls, with Mimi Gonzalez and Sandra Vall at the Doubletree, $40/$50 advance only. With all this going on, you don’t want to miss the Gay Days at the various area amusement parks. None of the “gay days” are official park events and no special tickets are required, so you may want to take advantage of the various package deals. Don’t forget that Florida residents get discounts on most theme park tickets. Don’t forget to wear your red shirts as you visit Animal Kingdom on Thursday, June 5. The red attire continues Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Friday. Saturday’s event at Magic Kingdom (at Walt Disney World) is still the signature event of the week. An estimated 50,000 Gay Days attendees pack the park and the 3:00 parade down Main Street always draws an unforgettable “sea of red” that can be seen from one end of the park to the other. Epcot is the site of Sunday’s final Gay Day. Gay Days Orlando not only provides an opportunity to make memories that last a lifetime, it is a chance to make GLBT friends from around the globe, proving that “It’s a Small World” after all. For more information on Gay Days Orlando, visit gaydays.com.

FITNESS

Don’t Sabotage your Workout!

by Tom

Bonanti

o

Have you ever jumped full speed ahead into a workout program only to find that you get bored, burned out, or injured quickly? Maybe you’ve been exercising regularly for weeks, but you are disappointed with the minimal results. There’s a good chance in either situation that you are engaging in some bad habits that are preventing you from getting the most out of your exercise program. Here are a few common culprits to look for! You never warm up. An adequate warm up is essential to any workout, especially dynamic ones that get you moving in the right movement patterns. As a rule, warm up and stretch before aerobic workouts like running, swimming or biking. A moderate 10 minute warm up before lifting, followed by stretching between and after sets is a good program for weight training. You’re not eating properly. The amount of energy you put into your body will determine how well you train. If you want to build muscle you need to take in more protein (between o.8 and 1 gram of protein per pound of lean body mass is a start). To lose weight you do not need to starve yourself. Instead you must eat the right foods – more lean protein, low glycemic index carbs, no processed foods or trans-fats. You do the same thing, every time. Periodize your training. Go to the gym with a plan. Train opposing muscle groups (back and chest, shoulders and arms, legs and glutes) on different days. Do your cardiovascular training on days you don’t lift, and do something that is fun and challenging like guymag.net

Zumba, kick-boxing, etc. You train too long and too frequently. Believe it or not, this is a big “no-no”. Working out and doing cardio help to release good hormones (testosterone, dopamine and human growth hormone) into your bloodstream which triggers positive results. Training for hours 7 days a week can have negative effects and release negative hormones into your system like cortisol which can actually break down healthy muscle tissue. A good place to start is with weight training 3-4 times per week for half hour periods. Doing cardio 2-3 times per week for 45 minutes at 65-85% of your target heart range will produce optimal results. Make sure to take 1-2 days off per week and get plenty of quality sleep. You mimic other’s routines. What works for one person may not be effective for you. Horrible exhibits of improper, sloppy form abound in all commercial gyms. Jerking movements, dropping weights and lifting too heavily at the outset can cause all manner of injuries and even lengthy set backs. Hire a personal trainer to teach you the basics. Go on-line and watch professionals demonstrate and explain movements and exercises that you can use in your training sessions. Stay focused, avoid bad habits, foster good ones, and your work outs will be fun and productive. Questions? Contact Tom at trainertomb@aol. com. Check out www.pumpnincgym.com.
