Christie Gannon is turning heads in Palm Beach — not just for her ravishing looks, but also for her contributions to society. You might have spotted the blond beauty on the polo grounds, cheering on her husband — Outback Steakhouse co-founder Tim Gannon — who has played competitively on a championship-winning team. Perhaps you’ve noticed her, pretty in pink, chairing the “Perfect Pink Gala” for Susan G. Komen, the organization dedicated to eradicating breast cancer. Veritably a modern-day Cinderella, she’s game to dress in costume as the beloved fairy tale character for the Palm Beach Day Academy book fair, looking as regal and magical as the princess herself. And along with another golden-haired “princess,” though somewhat smaller in stature, Gannon and her 6-year-old daughter Bettina will soon be creating a line of matching accessories for dogs and their owners. The collection will include bow ties, collars and bracelets, all in the interest of animal-related charitable causes. “From the start, Bettina has been concerned about people and animals that ‘didn’t have what they need,’” the proud mother of two says. “She wanted to start a business designed to lend a helping hand.” Clearly a chip off the old block with a strong philanthropic and entrepreneurial spirit, Bettina has “high hopes” for her brand, Bettina G. and Lucky D. “She loves to read and her puppy Lucky is currently training to become a R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dog),” Christie says. continued on 52

PALM BEACH PROFILE

continued from 50

Christie is a woman of great taste, in more than one sense of the word. Style-wise, she effortlessly transitions from casual to sophisticated, as the occasion dictates. “I love Michelle Farmer maxi dresses for polo. My new favorites are her cashmere dresses, perfect for day or night,” she says. For formal events, it’s a Haney gown, which she’s been inclined to buy in multiple colors. Gastronomically speaking, Christie craves the Aussie cheese fries or Bloomin’ Onion at Outback (naturally!) … or more recently, a Buffalo chicken sandwich or hand-spun milkshake from PDQ (People Dedicated to Quality), the restaurant chain of which her husband is the C.E.O. Life on the Island is rosy indeed for the Gannon family, who enjoy sunset bike rides along Lake Trail before dinner at Nick and Johnnie’s or Chez Jean-Pierre. And trekking for treats at Sprinkles is the kids’ favorite way to end the day. “I think people are surprised to find so many young families living in Palm Beach,” Christie says. “What’s not to love? This is paradise.” i 52 FLORIDA DESIGN’S PALM BEACH THE ISLAND 8-2

REAL ESTATE

Modern Masterpiece Sagaponack, New York

Designed by award-winning architects Hariri & Hariri, this modernist home expresses a minimalist aesthetic and is part of the Houses at Sagaponac, a subdivision of modern houses planned by developer Harry J. (Coco) Brown and intended to serve as a museum of architecture. The architects were inspired in their design of the home by Giacometti’s sculpture titled “Figure in a Box Between Two Boxes, which are houses.” This home is considered a work of art. The L-shaped one-story home on 2.72+/- acres offers 5,000+/- sq. ft. of living space, with five bedrooms and five and one-half baths in two wings surrounding a central terrace with a pool. The wood and concrete home is elevated on a solid platform and seems to hover above the landscape. The open plan living areas in one wing have walls of glass doors and windows that flood the interiors with light and provide views of the landscape in a convergence of indoors and outdoors. Living, dining and kitchen areas flow seamlessly into one another including the elegant master suite, secluded off to one side and with a spacious bath with glass-enclosed shower. The other wing, with glass walls and doors providing views and outdoor access and solid walls affording privacy, has three bedrooms, all en suite. The large library at one end of this wing offers a quiet space to get away from it all. In the finished lower level are a state-of-the-art theater, gym with infra-red sauna, additional bedroom and full bath, storage space and garage access. A separate and substantial guest house/art studio, also designed by the Hariri sisters, includes a full bath, outdoor shower with a secluded hot tub off to the side. The artist’s space includes tall ceilings with transom windows and clerestory windows providing northern light. A Har-Tru tennis court, two-car garage and 20,000 watt automatic backup generator, complete this distinctive modernist property. the Lopresto Collection answers the question, “Can automobiles be culture?” Most certainly yes according to author Andrea Cittandini, who worked for Yamaha and then Ferrari and Maserati, where he was Head of the Press Office. “This book bears witness to it,” he writes. “Cars

have revolutionized the way we get around.” And antique automobile collector Corrado Lopresto plays a special part. The most important collection in Italy and one of the most prestigious in the world, the Lopresto masterpieces represent a cross section of the history of automobiles, design, Italy, and its creativity. “Frequently, they are masterpieces that have long been forgotten,” Cittadini writes. “But through skilled restoration, Lopresto has salvaged their bygone splendour.” www.rizzoliusa.com i TOP RIGHT:

Making a splash among the well-heeled islanders this season, Via Capri, 34’s handmade sandals are certain to be nothing less than entrance-makers at all the Palm Beach spring and summer events. An artisan of handmade sandals from Capri, Francesco Pasta was born and raised in Italy, where he created and built his brand, Via Capri, 34. At the end of the summer season of 2013 — and 12 years of cobbling simple sandals made popular by the jet-set world of high society and celebrities — Francesco and his wife, Jessica, decided to bring “a taste of Capri” stateside. After setting up successful on-the-spot boutiques for trunk shows and fundraisers in Chicago, there continued on 88 ABOVE:

was absolutely no doubt a Via Capri, 34 boutique on Worth Avenue in the heart of Palm Beach would create quite the buzz. “From the calming colors on the walls to the luxurious white leather chairs, our customers will escape to the Mediterranean Sea during their visit,” Jessica says. The sandals are chic yet easily slipped over beach-sandy toes: most are flat-heeled, with thong or simple T-straps in an infinite amount of designs, colors and textures. Sample sandals are brilliantly displayed on the walls with bright white lighting to capture the quality of the sandals from the Swarovski crystals to the genuine snakeskin. Each pair is handmade to order. “We encourage our customers to try on as many styles as they wish,” Jessica says. “When she decides on a style of choice, Francesco takes an accurate measurement of her feet and begins to cobble — he can create a custom pair within a half hour.” With a unique style and personality, each pair of Via Capri, 34 sandals are a true one-of-a-kind. www.viacapri34.com i

Coconut palms sway above the extensive living complex at Casa de Campo, in the Dominican Republic. Seven bungalows with enough space to sleep 36 meander around the 10-acre property perched on a cape above the sea.

W

Waking up each morning in the Dominican Republic’s Casa de Campo Resort can present a number of conundrums — especially if you’re the owner of one of the resort’s fabulous homes, which overlook the Caribbean Sea. Should you play tennis till noon? Stop by the equestrian center for a romp? Practice your aim at the skeet shooting range? Go for a sail? Or enjoy one of the five world-class golf courses? Interior designer Lillian Fernandez set out to help the owners of this tropical island get-away grapple with those decisions in the most luxurious way.

And she decided, in this paradise, less really is more. Casa de Campo was built 35 years ago by the Gulf & Western Corporation. Its chairman was the original owner of the sprawling compound that Fernandez’ clients purchased. Spread over 10 acres of undulating greenery, the property seemed perfect for the huge extended family that shares the main house and its seven individual living casitas. “It is an unusual design,” Fernandez says. “But it makes perfect sense when children, grandchildren, their friends, their friend’s parents all arrive to play and enjoy.”

With its soaring 15-foot-high ceiling and mahogany wood flooring, the dining room easily accommodates a grand mahogany table with Sunbrella-covered chairs by PierceMartin from Palecek. Painted in iridescent ivory, an elegant mahogany mirror by local artisan Bibi Leon adds a subtle touch of contrast.

ALIQUAM ERAT VOLUTPAT. DONEC RUTRUM. CRAS EGET QUAM EGET LECTUS PRETIUM LAOREET. IN RUTRUM LOREM TEMPUS METUS. DONEC VULPUTATE, NULLA VEL CONVALLIS VENENATIS, NIBH MI BIBENDUM LIGULA, AC TEMPUS TELLUS MAURIS UT MAURIS.

Set on a cape of solid coral, the main house insists on its rustic roots, designed not to compete with the natural beauty that surrounds it, but to become one with the land’s browns, greens, and brilliant blues. From a welcoming gazebo, into an open courtyard, the main house develops as individual casitas: the library, the dining room and the living room. Away from the main structure, seven two-bedroom bungalows, each with its own living area, are reached via walkways and paths. “Uniquely, there are essentially no windows anywhere … because there really aren’t any walls,” Fernandez says. Built of heavily varnished pine, louvered “walls” disappear as they are lifted or folded away to let Mother Nature’s currents flow.

THE GLITTERING ARRAY OF VASES FROM GLOBAL VIEWS TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE VOLUMINOUS DINING ROOM. HERE, LOCAL ARTISAN BIBI LEON’S HAND-PAINTED CHARGERS STRIKE ALL THE RIGHT TROPICAL NOTES AS THE TRADE WINDS PLAY A CALMING MELODY.

“There is air conditioning in the bedrooms … if someone insists,” the designer says. “But the southern part of the Dominican Republic is arid. The breeze always blows and it rarely rains.” The dining room is a central gathering point when visitors arrive. Its soaring 15-foot-high ceiling and the gentle purr of fans seem like a stage set for a tropical play. Crafted by local artisans, a rich mahogany table custom designed by Fernandez easily accommodates a large party, or with a sleight of hand, can be cleverly divided. “The rounded ends of the table can be removed and either put together to form a smaller circular table or individually placed against the wall to make curved consoles,” she says.

Lillian Fernandez_Fanjul_PBI82_final 5

1/12/16 1:20 PM

Interior designer Lillian Fernandez let the natural world dictate the palette and the scale of this tropical getaway. From the deck of one of the seven bungalows, is a vista spanning the whole of the Caribbean. An intimate bar lets swimmers linger longer by the “tree house” pool.

While there are two pools on the property, Fernandez likes to think of the one pictured as the “tree house” pool. Elevated on supports into the coral stone, it is surrounded by trees and the decking of one of the bungalows. “In reality, life here is lived outdoors; all else are accoutrements for the drama of nature,” she says. Mahogany chairs carved by local craftsmen sit poolside to offer family and friends exquisite views of the grandeur of the tropics. In addition to the draw of the water and the Peter Dye golf courses, one of which wraps this property on three sides, Hispaniola has become a hub of international island living. The Dominican Republic, which

shares the eastern half of the island with Haiti, has become much loved by European and America tourists. Its economy is one of the fastest growing in the Caribbean and purchasers from Asia, South America and Europe have discovered the Dominicans to be welcoming and creative. “Some of the most beautiful hand work I have found comes from people here who, as yet, are unrecognized,” Fernandez says. Still, her interior scheme was not about artifacts, fabrics, or even furnishings. “Instead, I wanted to make a beach house, a place of fun and relaxation,” the designer says. “This is a place where the people who come here leave with beautiful memories that were born in a setting I had a hand in creating.” i

A

A flourishing art scene makes Palm Beach an internationally recognized cultural destination during the warm winter season. Between now and the end of March, hardly a week will go by when there isn’t an art festival in full swing somewhere. Seasonal crowds set their sights on a plethora of local art institutions and galleries, as well as the Palm Beach County Convention Center for Art Palm Beach hosted from Jan. 20-24, 2016. As art fairs have become part of the area’s developing narrative, Palm Beach has

seen an explosion of culture. January’s schedule of exhibition openings surrounding Art Palm Beach will provide a feast of cultivation enough to satisfy the most discerning of collectors. For information, call 305/490-4554 or visit www.artpalmbeach.com. i

PALM BEACH PROFILE

BETH STERN From the author of the New York Times bestselling Oh My Dog comes the true story of Yoda, a very special cat — and adorable Instagram sensation — rescued by Palm Beachers Beth and Howard Stern. TEXT BY KIM MOSLEY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ILYA S. SAVENOK/GETTY IMAGES

A

Actress, model, animal rights activist and author, Beth Stern lives in a home with her six rescue cats — Apple, Walter, Leon Bear, Charlie, Bella, and Yoda — along with a never-ending rotation of foster kittens, and of course her husband, radio personality and America’s Got Talent judge

Howard Stern. Beth’s love for animals is her passion in life and, as it turns out, the famous shock jock actually loves his family’s feline companions as well. An incredible advocate for animals and spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America, Beth not only helps focus national attention on the plight of shelter animals with her work behind the scenes and her many TV appearances, she also authors children’s books. Her books, Yoda: The Story of a Cat and His

Kittens (2014) and Oh My Dog (2010) were New York Times bestsellers. Now, the animal-loving couple is splitting their time between their oceanfront estate in Palm Beach and their home in New York as Beth embarks on the publicity tour for her new book,

Yoda Gets A Buddy, available at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon. All proceeds from her new book benefit the North Shore Animal League America. www.imprints.simonandschuster.biz/Aladdin i

Featuring many of the top-ranked men’s tennis professionals in the world, the Delray Beach Open returns with world-class tournaments, more than a week’s worth of parties, special events and nightly concerts. As the most celebrated team in tennis history, the twins have won 109 ATP titles, 16 Grand Slam tournaments, and won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics. “We are thrilled to continue adding top talent to our 2016 field,” tournament director Mark Baron says. “Grigor Dimitrov is an exciting young player who we have wanted to have in Delray Beach for some time. And having a healthy Tommy Haas competing again will be a treat for our fans.” And it’s a blast from the past when tennis greats the likes of USA’s James Blake, Mardy Fish and Aaron Krickstein join international players Mark Philippoussis, Sebastien Grosjean and Greg Rusedski center court.
