Masonic symbolism is derived from numerous ancient sources, and, like any other symbol, can be understood at several levels of meaning. For that reason, any student will find himself or herself drawn deeper into the ancient lore and symbolism of Egypt, Israel, and even of the Medieval builders who constructed the great cathedrals of Europe. For example, much of the ritual of Freemasonry is based on the story of Hiram Abiff,a supposed Phoenician master mason murdered while constructing Solomon's Temple. But much of its symbolism is based on Egyptian themes, since Freemasons believe their organization preserves ancient knowledge developed even before the Flood and guarded by Egyptian priests. And the wellknown compass.
The Freemasons guard their secrets well, but some symbols have become well enough known to provide a basis for research. These symbols include the compass and square, which is perhaps the most recognizable mark of the Freemasons. Other wellknown symbols include the apron, the black and white checkerboard floor used in all Masonic lodges, and the twin pillars, whose most famous appearance is at Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland. The compass and square, when placed together, unite and regulate life and actions. The G in the center of the emblem represents Geometry,

Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel are considered to be complementary colors (example: red and green). The high contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation. This color scheme must be managed well so it is not jarring. Complementary colors are tricky to use in large doses, but work well when you want something to stand out. Complementary colors are really bad for text. Analogous color schemes use colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. They usually match well and create serene and comfortable designs. Analogous color schemes are often found in nature and are harmonious and pleasing to the eye.
