Ottery Chamber of Commerce held an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday 9th February at The Tumbling Weir Hotel,

Ottery St Mary, for a presentation by Sainsbury’s Public and Community Relations representatives and the building contractor responsible for building the store. The meeting was open to the public which resulted in a full house with over 70 people attending. The object of the meeting was to give residents and businesses an

impression of what the building works would entail in terms of length of build and any resulting inconvenience caused during the period. The following points were clarified by Sainbury’s: z The building works will start in March and should take 6 to 7 months. The store should be Continued on page 2

completed by the Autumn and the contractors will do their best to minimise any disruption to residents. The build process will start with the Service Yard Entrance from Canaan Way. If there are any concerns, contact can be made through the website shown below.A free-phone number and telephone numbers will be advertised on the hoardings around the works. There will also be quarterly newsletters to keep people up to date with progress. z The site has been examined by an expert archaeology team. Nothing of any value was discovered. z The construction company have confirmed that they will have to use part of the car park to complete works and store equipment. 50% of the car park may be taken up at any time but they hope to complete this part of the build as quickly as possible. Hind Street will have to be closed at some point in order to lay service cables. An appropriate time will be agreed with EDCC. Access will be available for residents. The car park will be finished before the road closure (2 to 3 days). It was suggested that Sainsbury’s pay for part of the car park at Land of Canaan for free parking to make up for loss of spaces nearer to town. They said this had already been dis-

cussed and it would be a good idea if the Chamber also put forward this proposal to EDDC. z The Farmers market will be moved to the Land of Canaan car park. zThe existing Hind Street toilet block will be demolished and Sainsbury’s will provide temporary toilets at the Land of Canaan car park. The store will have toilets when completed. zThe contractors hope to minimise any noise from the building works. Although they will be restricted to work 7.30am to 6.00pm, they may decide to work seven days a week to expedite the building works. z Once the store has been completed there will be 130 parking spaces. There is a legal requirement to make a specific number of these available for the disabled which Sainsbury’s will comply with. z There will be a display panel in the car park showing a plan of the town enabling people to locate the key points of interest and its shops and businesses. z The car park will be open 24 hours daily with a restriction of two hours parking during store opening hours. This will not be policed by Sainsbury’s initially but it may prove necessary if it becomes mis-used. z There was some concern that if there were events held at the

COUNCIL MATTERS

The February Full Council meeting considered the results of the public voting on which organisations were to benefit from the Section 106 money available in the Parish. The Council decided to approve that ÂŁ15,267 will go to the Skateboard/BMX Project with the remaining ÂŁ4,733 to be granted to the outdoor multigym project with future Section 106 receipts for sport/recreation to go towards the outdoor multi-gym until the target amount was reached. Planning matters are issues that concern many of you. East Devon District Council currently supplies copies of plans to the Town Council which you are able to come in and view. However, soon paper copies will no longer be supplied and we will be showing you plans online in the Office. In order that this can be done efficiently, it will be necessary to restrict the times that it is possible for you to look at plans to between 11am and 1pm Monday to Friday. You can of course look at plans on your own computer at www.eastdevon.gov.uk click on Planning and insert the Planning Reference number. With the Royal Wedding fast approaching, the Council has

decided that it may be able to give some limited financial support to street parties being organised for children in the Parish. Please write to me giving full details of where, when, how many children will benefit and who is organising the street party. It is necessary to apply for a temporary road closure and to do this you need to contact Devon County Council Highway Management department on 01392 381459 to get an application pack. The pack is also available online from www.devon.gov.uk and search on “Royal Wedding road closures. Note that a minimum of 6 weeks notice is required to process an application but there is no charge as it is a small community event. I would remind you that the Council will make an award to the “Citizen of the Year 2011 at the Annual Parish Meeting so it’s time once again to consider who you think is worthy of this honour. That person may be someone who has done a lot in their community, worked to see through a particular community project or...it’s really up to you to decide who you think merits this honour and why although no Councillor or Council employee is

eligible. The person receiving this honour will be the one receiving most votes by you, the public. The person voted for must live in the Parish but the person voting can live outside the Parish. Use the voting slip on page 19 (or write a separate letter or email giving all the relevant information if you don’t want to cut up your Gazette) and submit it to the Council Office by 25th March 2011. Remember that the person who will become “Citizen of the Year 2011 will be the one who receives most votes so it’s up to you! At the same time as searching for the “Citizen of the Year, Mayor Glyn Dobson is also looking to back a charity in 2011 and he is asking for your help in deciding which one to support. The Council will help the successful charity with publicity by including its logos, straplines and slogans on the Council’s website and computer-generated literature. Posters and leaflets will be on show at the Council Offices. Once the voting deadline has passed the Mayor will review the nominations and shortlist three charities, then the residents attending the Annual Parish Meeting on Tuesday 12th April will be asked to vote for their favourite charity from the three shortlisted charities and

the charity with the most votes will become the Mayor’s Charity of the Year. To vote for your favourite charity please complete the nomination slip on page 19 and return to the Council Offices by Thursday 31st March. Alternatively you can email your nomination to enquiries@otterystmarytc.gov.uk including these details: nominated charity, your name, address and phone number and the reason for your nomination. Allotment holders will be eagerly anticipating the start of the growing season and getting to grips with the ravages the winter weather has caused. The Management Committee has asked me to remind you about its AGM (to which all tenants are invited), to be held in the small room of the Institute, Yonder Street at 7.30pm on Wednesday 16th March. Take along some seeds and swap them for some you need in the seed swap! Another plea to tenants from the Committee is please do not dump stones or other debris in the grass areas around the allotments as it means that grass cutting cannot be carried out. Green Man at Feniton Church

It has taken me a long time to tell you about this but after the worst of the October flood water in Feniton church had subsided I was walking around the church on my own surveying the damage. Near the back of the church I saw on the floor, still covered in mud, a small 4cm block of wood. I picked it up without looking and put it in my pocket, thinking it had probably fallen off the screen leading into the choir vestry. When I returned indoors I took out this piece of wood and to my surprise found it was a carving of a “Green Man” So what is a Green Man? Well the term was only introduced in 1939 by Lady Raglan who used the terminology in the Journal “Folk Lore”. It is a carving either in stone or wood of a man’s head with leaves or greenery emerging from the face. With only a few exceptions the medieval masons or

D O G G O N E H A I R Page 4

wood carvers depicted him as a gentle and benevolent deity. Try as I might I cannot find where this piece of wood came from, we have no missing pieces on any of the screens, perhaps he was hidden in the church and the flood water released him from his hiding place only to emerge as a symbol of celebration. What will we do with him? I hope that we can mount him on a plaque and record the find so that we will remember the night of 28th October 2008 as a night of the re-birth of St. Andrews Church. Ottery Gardening Club What an afternoon we had with Les Peek as our speaker. He was so interesting and knowledgeable and then with the added bonus of a cream tea afterwards, it made a very enjoyable afternoon. With sixty four people attending it was fun. Next was the AGM with our new nominees being voted onto the committee followed by tea and biscuits and later Heather Talbot from Joshua’s as our speaker. Fifty six people attended with a big thank you to everybody for making the effort. We have Chris Laxton from East Devon Produce on 12th April at 2.30pm at a cost of £2.00 which includes an afternoon tea. One last thing to mention on speakers: please amend the day quoted for Keiron Bewes talk on 8th October from Tuesday to Saturday. A typing error, you can’t get the staff nowadays! Our Spring Show is nearly here on Saturday 19th March (how time flies) and we are hoping as many people as possible will enter and attend so that we keep these important activities going. The schedules are now available from Dilly’s and anybody from one to ninety or more can enter, so go for it.The

Some of the paths in the garden are unmade and there are cobblestones and no seating facilities so please bear this in mind but there is wheelchair access. More details will be given out nearer the date. One last thing to mention is that Membership Subscriptions are due before the end of March and the fee is still only £5.00 for the year. Work starts on West Hill’s first play park! West Hill’s long-awaited play park is now being built. The construction and planning of the park has been a huge community effort, with a team of councillors and residents working together. Local businesses have also been very generous. Most generous of all has been West Hill resident, Craig Williams from CSW Groundworks, who is sourcing thousands of pounds worth of materials and giving an equal amount of time and labour to the scheme. With Craig’s involvement, there will be more seating, a drainage system to make the ground drier in the winter, and humps and contours in the ground to make it more fun. Craig is also creating paths between the equipment to prevent shoes from getting muddy. He deserves a large amount of credit for his generosity of spirit. The final design for the park incorporates: • a willow den village • a tree root seating/playing area • swings for older and younger children • a centrepiece treehouse, including rope net, ramp slide and pole

The ground will be attractively landscaped with contours and wildflowers and herbs, which are designed to be hardy enough to withstand regular trampling and picking. There will be provision for a zip wire which will be added at a later date. The Playbuilder Government funding is aimed at 8-13 year olds as this is the age group most in need of play park equipment, however, we also intend to provide more facilities for younger children, as soon as we are in a position to do so.” The park itself will be built by Alastair Guy, the creator of

We need your talent! Would you be interested in taking part in our Talent Show? It will be held on Saturday June 4th at The Institute (time yet to be confirmed). We are looking for a variety of short performances (no more than 20 mins) from different community groups within our town. We would also be happy to hear from any individuals who would be willing to perform. Rehearsing would have to be done in the participant’s own time and venue, but we will have a practice run at approximately 2pm on the day. We can provide lighting, but any props will be the responsibility of the participants. The focus of the event will be to provide a fun and entertaining show that highlights our wealth of local talent that sees different age groups working together and gives publicity to the community groups involved. This event is being organised in order to raise money for Ottery Carnival Royalty, but there will be no entry fee for participants. If you feel able to support us in any way please contact Toni Hiscocks on 811636 (hiscocks@toniandalfie.plus.com) Mary Batten-Stevens on 815188 (mbattenstevens@yahoo.com) Please return your registration forms to the Ottery Tourist Information Office by 29th April 2011.

The King’s School graded Campaign to tackle obesity as ‘Outstanding’ by OfSTED

The King’s School, Ottery St Mary has been officially graded as ‘Outstanding’ at a recent OfSTED inspection. In a letter issued to students, parents and carers Chair of Governors Mr Edward Bloomfield said: “We are delighted to now be able to publish the outcomes of the recent February 2011 OfSTED inspection. OfSTED has officially graded the school as Outstanding. “The Governors would like to thank all of the students and their parents for their unwavering support over the last three years since the last inspection which has led to this fantastic result. Staff, past and present, have worked incredibly hard since the last inspection when the school was judged as Good with Outstanding features, to reach the point where we are now judged as Outstanding overall. The Governors would also like to acknowledge the outstanding leadership of the Senior Team in helping to take the school on this journey. “It was so rewarding to hear the Lead Inspector in his feed-

back describe the ethos of the school as: “Achievement for All is not just a strap line here, it runs through everything the school does and is truly at the very heart of the school which is why the pupils show such strong academic and personal development. This school is all about raising childrens’ aspirations”. “I believe firmly that the opening sentence in the actual report represents everything the school has been striving to achieve: ‘The King’s School is an outstanding school that not only allows students to reach high academic standards, but also to develop into confident, articulate, caring and mature young adult’”. “Although we are obviously all elated at this outcome we are not complacent and will use this OfSTED report as a platform to continue to build on the work we do in the future. Once again congratulations to everyone but in particular to the students who have earned this glowing accolade.” Congratulations to The King’s School, its staff and its students. You are a credit and an asset to Ottery St Mary.

A campaign launches this week to get the people of Ottery St Mary working together to tackle obesity in the town after a national survey revealed that people who are overweight often suffer humiliation and embarrassment and have low confidence and low self esteem, all of which seriously affect their everyday lives. Experts acknowledge that waist measurement, as well as weight, is an indicator of an individual’s health. With an ‘at risk’ waist measurement of more than 88cm for women and 102cm for men, results of the survey show that 41% of people in Devon and the surrounding area are in danger of developing severe health problems. In a similar campaign run in communities across the whole of the UK last year, slimmers in Devon lost an incredible 2,495 stone in 12 weeks. Now local slimming expert Dawn Carter whose Slimming World group is based in the heart of the community at Ottery St Mary Football Club every Monday at 7pm. is pledging to help even more people whose happiness and wellbeing are being affected by worries about their weight. She says: “For many people, being overweight has become a way of life and although they

often feel guilty and unhappy with themselves, they’ve come to accept these feelings just as part of the life they have. That’s certainly how I was before I found Slimming World. Let’s Beat Obesity Together in Ottery St Mary is here to show that it doesn’t have to be like that. Losing weight and keeping it off really is possible, and you don’t have to starve or deprive yourself to succeed. “The members of my group lose weight by making small lifestyle changes. We have 40 members in the group, men and women, and they’ve all pledged to make this year’s Let’s Beat Obesity Together in Ottery St Mary campaign better than ever. ” Anyone who joins their local Slimming World group between 28th February and 12th March and purchases a 12-week Countdown to take part in the Let’s Beat Obesity Together challenge will get FREE membership and two weeks free attendance in a ‘Pay for 10 get 2 weeks free’ offer - representing a total saving of £19.90. OTTERY PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS

The roof is on! We now have new contractors working away on the playgroup building and recently the roof and windows were put in place. With the building all but water tight, work can start in earnest on the interior of the building. Completion is scheduled for 22nd April, so hopefully we can welcome the playgroup in the summer term. Many of the children throughout the school have been representing us in local events. Year 6 children attended the Hockey Festival held at the Kings School wnere they performed really well against other local schools.Year 2 soon followed their older counterparts up to Kings to take part in the Potted Sports Tournament. Both sets of children proved to be perfect ambassadors for the school while enjoying themselves at the same time. Many thanks to the children and teachers for taking part so well.We were also represented by individuals at the recent Rotary Music Even-ing and the children who attended that event also entertained the school during assembly just before the half-term break. It would appear that Ottery does indeed have talent, and plenty of it!

In the run up to the Easter break, some Year 6 pupils will be attending a Pupil Voice Conference run by East Devon District Council. The conference allows pupils from many primary schools to come together and share their ideas for the future of the area. I am sure they will be full of good ideas and will have no trouble getting them across. Speaking of ideas, the School Council have been busy organising all kinds of things in school. School Council News Our new Chairperson, Eve has been ably assisted by the rest of the Council in organising fundraising to help children and families in Africa to ontain access to clean water and sanitory conditions. They have been busy selling entry sheets for a design-a-bottle competition and have organised a sponsored obstacle event when the children return to school. They even led an assembly all about the ideas which I’m sure they found nerve-wrackingAs well as their charity work, the Council have also organised litter duty rotas in school to help keep the place looking clean and tidy. Hopefully next month they will be able to tell you how it all went themselves. Mark Gilronan

Witchfinder - a new musical premier for New Ottregians It is 1612 and Jacobean England is still reeling from the Gunpowder Plot of several years earlier, and the implications it has for the people, and more importantly, the Monarchy. The country has also been tainted by the intrigue surrounding Demonology, and specifically Witchcraft. Although not the scourge of the country as is the popular myth, it infested parts of Europe. Against this backdrop, Witchfinder introduces the story of two young lovers from different classes, backgrounds and worlds, thrust together in a melting-pot of politics and suspicion, fuelled by fear and an over-zealous desire to hunt down the evil-doers, whether they exist or not. As you may have read in February’s issue of the Gazette, Ottery’s Health Store closed its doors on 26th February under the management of a very special lady, Vanessa Coxon. It has been a privilege to have had the opportunity to take over the store and to work alongside Vanessa during the past 6 months. That time has enabled me to get to know the trade and the clientele who have been very kind about me taking over the business. So what changes will you find? In principle, the whole idea and ethos stays the same with the addition of a specialised delicounter which will provide a cheese selection from local West Country producers. The key suppliers for this will be West Country cheeses in Topsham and Northworthy Goats dairy, which many of you will know from the farmers market each month. In addition the deli counter will have a selection of olives, flavoured vinegars on tap, freshly baked tarts and

With a powerful story, dominant characters and soaring music, Witchfinder traces the story of those affected with the tragic and heart-rending consequences painting a picture of people which is just as resonant today, encompassing life and of loss but equally, love and hope.

Rehearsals will start at the United Reformed Church Hall on Tuesday 8th March at 7.30pm, and new members are very welcome to join current members that night to hear Helena Williams, the producer, (among other roles!) introduce the words and music of what promises to be perhaps the most spectacular production in the Company’s history. Anyone wishing to know more about the company or the musical will receive a warm welcome from Toni Williams at Bagpuss Gallery in Mill Street or call 01404 814272. Toni Williams-Pugh

The construction of medieval roofs Our forefathers in the medieval building industry could certainly teach us all a thing or two about constructing buildings which would stand the test of time. The timber roof structures in many of our churches and other ancient buildings were built to last, using only the typical carpenters’ tools of the period which, amazingly, have changed little over the centuries. Although after many hundreds of years, timber structures of this nature have been repaired or reconstructed, a surprising number of original timbers can still be identified. At their February meeting in the Institute, members and guests of the Ottery Heritage Society were treated to a fascinating talk on medieval roof construction, with particular reference to the roof of St Mary’s church, Ottery St Mary. Guest speaker, Simon Lowne, is a local carpenter. Although initially from Surrey, he has lived locally for a number of years. He is a chartered surveyor and a former mining engineer before developing his own business here in the South West. As is well known, Ottery St Mary church was rebuilt in the early 1300’s under the direction of Bishop Grandisson, as

part of his Ecclesiastical College. The church was modelled on Exeter Cathedral and displays the same style of Gothic vaulting in the ceiling. In order to facilitate construction of such vaulting medieval carpenters and architects devised what is known as the ‘high roof’. Exeter cathedral is often held to be the pinnacle of development for the high roof and Ottery, as originally built, shares many similarities of construction. An illustration of a rafter ‘couple’ from Ottery is shown

above. It consists of rafters, diagonal bracing and a collar. The space under a high roof is unimpeded by any tie beams running between the rafter feet and this allowed clear space for the construction of the fan vaulting. As originally built there were approximately 120 rafter couples in the roof structure. Of these only a handful survived in original position, the ravages of time and decay having required a significant rebuilding

of the roof in the early 19th century. The original timbers were all cut from oak trees of between 80 and 120 years of age which would have been grown in woodland managed specifically for the purposes of producing construction timber. The total number of trees felled to build this roof was in the region of 150, most having a girth of between 13 and 17 inches when cut.All of the roof components have numbering or ‘carpenters marks’ which are a clear indication that the structure was prefabricated in a framing yard before being brought to site for final assembly. In complete contrast to this ecclesiastical style of roof carpentry, Simon also described work undertaken on the conservation of a medieval hall ‘hammer beam’ roof at Whitestaunton in Somerset (pictured below). This required replacement of decayed timber and carving of hammer beams to replace those removed during subsequent alterations. This roof was originally constructed in approximately 1460. Heritage Society secretary, Chris Saunders, thanked the speaker for a most interesting, highly researched and well

The fan vaulted ceiling in St Mary’s Parish Church, Ottery St Mary illustrated talk which, judging from the many questions from the audience, had held their interest and attention throughout the evening. Membership of the Ottery St Mary Heritage Society is open to anyone interested in furthering the work of the Charity. Meetings are held in the Ottery St Mary Institute, usually on the third Tuesday of each month, unless advertised otherwise. Eminent speakers are invited to talk on their particular areas of

interest. These meetings are well-supported social affairs and refreshments are available. Non members are always welcome. The next meeting will be on Tuesday March 15th, when guest speaker Martin Watts will be giving an illustrated talk entitled “Mills in the East Devon Landscape,” discussing the history and technology of milling. As anticipated, the Making It Local funding body has deferred CMPs latest bid for funds, but they suggested that CMP put in a new bid which focussed on the poetry stones idea, linked to new interpretation materials - leaflets and an exhibition. This idea was already flagged up very strongly in the public consultation that took place a year ago, so the CMP committee have now decided to push for the stones in advance of the sculpture that was the main aim of earlier bids. The importance of a sculptural centre piece has not been forgotten however, and it remains on the shopping list for future funding efforts. The current plan is to engrave Coleridge’s iconic poem “Kubla Khan” in its entirety, along the edge of the new footpath across Canaan Way recreation grounds. The stones will be or an attractive dark granite and the poem will stretch for about 70 meters along the first part of the path. A new leaflet explaining the story of Kubla Khan and its place in Coleridge’s life is in preparation and it is hoped the work will be

completed some time this year, preferably during construction of the path, but if not, then shortly afterwards. The educational gain is clear enough - but this could also be a unique artefact - possibly the longest single line of engraved poetry in the world. The Heritage Lottery will also be approached for funds for the stones, but clearly there is now a growing need for local funds to top up any grants we may achieve. The CMP website has details of our progress and an oppor-tunity to make a donation - or you can subscribe to a new booklet of Coleridge’s amusing side - entitles Cole-ridge Sauce, it is due for publi-cation around Easter time this year. This is a chance to invest in Ottery’s future, and anyone who has Ottery at heart should be involved in supporting CMPs efforts. Talatones Handbell Ringers

What fun we had at the Brownies meeting in the United Reform Church Hall. I think they enjoyed it as much as we did. They were so interested in the bells and the history of them. After we had played a few tunes they came and had ago and we may have talent for the future so let’s hope they come along occasionally to visit us and take up playing handbells. Our next visits are to Rockbeare in April and Whimple in May and believe it or not we have a future concert in January 2012. It is nice to be so popular. All are welcome and if you would like more information please contact Joan Dalton on 01404 815082.

West Country Embroiderers

This month at the meeting of the West Country Embroiderers Carol Tanner showed members how to stitch Sashiko quilting. This is a form of Japanese quilting that was used to pad or patch their traditional garments. It is a simple straight stitch quilting. Last month Ann Holden demonstrated “stitch and cut back”. This involved layers of materials and the design was stitched around the outline and the centre part cut away to show the colour underneath, rather like a stained glass window. Samples of both these items will be shown in the exhibition to be held in May at the Institute. Anyone interested in joining the group, or coming to see what we do, please contact Pat Snelling on 01404 812226 to make arrangements. The group meet on the first Monday of the month at The Institute, Ottery St Mary.

Ottery St Mary Vision OM

The daffodils are coming out – a sure that Spring is on it’s way. We shall be so pleased to be able totake trips out of Ottery. We do tend to hold our winter meetings at the Institute as it is hard to forecast the weather. However, come April, we shall be venturing further afield. On 31st March we are arranging a speaker and in April we are having lunch at the Pavilion in Exmouth. We so like this venue as there is the possibility, weather permitting, of taking the sea breezes along the prom for those that wish to do this. Otherwise, we can sit and chat in the Pavilion. This winter has seemed a long one and we have sadly lost one of our members. Margaret will be missed. Our founder, Mrs. Anne Decent, is taking a well earned rest from the day to day running of Vision Om. We will divide the various tasks between us, but will still have Anne to guide us. Any new members are still very welcome and if you are interested we meet the last Thursday afternoon at 2.00pm in each month at the Institute. Please ring Mary 01404 813176 or Kay 01404 815001.

People needed for survey to investigate diabetes The Peninsular Medical School in Exeter is looking for people to take part in a survey to investigate the underlying causes of diabetes, a common and increasing condtition in today’s society. 10,000 people are required, of which 4000 have already been recruited. Volunteers of any age over 18 are welcome, whether or not they are diabetic. They will be sent a simple form to fill in, asking for details of their medical history, diet and lifestyle, and asked to attend for a 30 minute appointment at the Medical School. During the appointment blood and urine samples will be taken. All the information will be treated with the strictest confidence, and will not be given to anybody else. This is a very easy and worthwhile way to help in an important research project at very little personal inconvenience. Free cat neutering for a limited period The East Devon Branch of Cats Protection is offering free neutering for your cat if you are a resident with one of the following post codes: EX5, EX8, EX9, EX10, EX11, EX12, EX13, EX15, EX16, EX24, TA20, DT6 DT7. You will need to contact your nearest participating Veterinary Surgery to make an appointment. They are: Ikin & Oxenham, Veterinary Surgeons, Ottery St Mary. Tel: 01404 814322. Cranbrook Veterinary Centre, Rockbeare. Tel: 01404 823423. The Vale Veterinary, Whimple. Tel: 01884 35558. Last year the East Devon Branch alone took in nearly 200 unwanted kittens. We could have taken in many more but we had neither the room nor the volunteers to care for them. Many of the kittens we were unable to take in will have died in pain and misery or will have been abandoned to become long term strays. This is why we are launching our Free Neutering Campaign to encourage people to get their cats neutered before this year’s kittening season begins. Cats can be neutered from 4 months of age and as a female

Marmaduke - now happy in his new home

cat can become pregnant at 5 months old it is important to book you cat in as soon as possible. Neutering is a safe procedure which has become commonplace in veterinary practices for over 30 years. There are many other reasons for having your cat neutered. Neutered cats cost less to feed and are less likely to get sick or injured. Neutering also reduces a cat’s likelihood to roam, fight, spray and catch certain diseases such as FIV and FELV. They are also less likely to get certain cancers. Un-neutered Toms will be attracted to your home when your un-neutered female is in season. So please take advantage of our offer and ring a participating vet as soon as possible. For participating vets in other post code areas that differ from those shown above call Steph on 01297 22085.

EAST DEVON BRANCH www.eastdevoncats.com

All our cats and kittens are flead, wormed, vaccinated, microchipped and, if over 5 months old, neutered. We also help with neutering costs for the kittens we home.

Moving home? Moving something? Moving away? Moving home. It really can be a stressful experience, something that both Paul Richardson and Kevin Turner, partners at Avid Move have experienced in the last few years. That’s why after a few years away from the industry they have decided to start their new business.Their goal? To make the experience as stress fee as possible. So what do they do and why are they different? Well everything from a single man and a van service to a UK wide home move service. The ethos being it doesn’t matter if it is just a sofa that needs moving to the other side of town, a house clearance with fragile antiques or a home move to another part of the country. The level of service will be the same and the price just as competitive. In fact on their website they offer a unique service guarantee ranging from discounts for late arrival, to a “job for free”. As partner Paul Richardson said, “It’s something we are prepared to offer because we are confident we will never have to use it!” Based locally just outside Ottery St Mary, they have new 3.5 tonne luton vans with tail lifts as well as comprehensive goods in transit and public liability insurance. Every job is unique so they are equipped with

a range of specialist packaging materials as well as piano trolleys, dust sheets etc, - in fact everything that you could need (including a friendly smile!) to make any move, however big or small, a stress free experience. So why not give them a call or drop them an email? For more information call 01404 38400 or visit www.avidmove.co.uk. D.I.Y. TIP OF THE MONTH

BY CHRIS ABBOTT

Bag a bargain at Bits & Bobs

Problems with ‘Compliance’ Paints Hello and welcome to March’s Tip of the Month Column. In the ‘DIY world’ there is a lot of confusion regarding ‘trim’ paints which are gloss or satin paints for wood and metal surfaces. Basically, due to new legislation these paints which are traditionally solvent based, have to reduce their VOC level (Volatile Organic Compounds) which contributes to atmospheric pollution. As a result, a lot of paints and wood preservers are switching from the traditional solvent based paint, to a water based paint. The problem that customers are finding is that, say for example, a tin of Dulux Satinwood that they purchased last year, will not do the same thing as a tin purchased this year. That is because the new water based topcoat will not ‘sit’ on top of a solvent based undercoat. It simply will not adhere and will peel off. Like I said earlier, there is a lot of confusion out there with these new ‘compliance paints’ and a lot of people have been badly advised on these. Abbotts is a Dulux Colour and Advice Centre (the only one in Devon), and as a result we have been sent this up to date information from Dulux which

applies to their products only. “On bare surfaces use two coats of Dulux primer/undercoat (water based), and then one coat of the water based Satinwood or eggshell finish paints. “The general rule of thumb is that water based paints will not go on top of solvent based paints, but, if for example, you are recoating a surface that was painted using a solvent based paint that is a few years old, then you will be able to over coat with a water based paint providing you lightly sand the surface to remove the sheen, and then apply one coat of primer/ undercoat to adhere to the surface, before applying your water based top coat. If the surface is freshly painted in solvent based paint, then the paint will need to be sanded right back or possibly removed prior to applying the water based paint.” I hope this makes some kind of sense! For specific information and the correct advice come and see us in store. You will also find that our range of Dulux paints are very, very competitively priced against the DIY superstores. And we will make sure you have the right paint, for the right job!

Bits & Bobs, another new Ottery business, opened its doors for trading on Monday 7th February. The £1 and Discount shop is located in Jesu Street (formerly Wendy’s Greengrocers). Proprietor Richard said: “Basically, we are selling items that cost a lot more elsewhere for £1, 2 for £1 and some at 3 for £1. Our stock includes items ranging from food stuffs to pet food and we have a great range of discounted puzzle books. We also have a range of top brand cosmetics that are less than half RRP and a lovely range of Fair-trade jewellery. In time we will be bringing even more stock to the shop and selling things to the public at discounted prices. We plan to stock the shop until we can’t fit any more in! “The shop has already been very well received by people who have found us and we already have many regulars who think the business is a good idea - which is really encouraging for us and we would like to thank them for spreading the word! We would also like to thank other shop keepers in the town for displaying our posters. They have been so encouraging.” Richard and his wife Emma, who live in Ottery, had previously been making cushions and selling them various markets twice a week. They decided to open the shop in town to be close to Emma’s mother who became very ill and needs them to be close to home. Richard and Emma took foward to seeing more new customers. Pop soon and grab yourself a bargain!

LION’S CORNER

As I reported in the last edition, we were going to hold the belated wheelbarrow raffle near to St Valentine’s Day. This was held on Saturday 12th February in Honiton, and was won by Sue Broom of Honiton. Photographs of her and other items of interest can be found on our newly established web site, which is contactable on www.honitonlions.org.uk. Lion Bob Francis has put a great deal of work in getting this website up and running, and it is well worth a visit in order to view its regular updates and photographs. I did mention that we were in the semi final of the District Skittles. We won this against Clevedon Lions Club, and now have to play the final which is against Okehampton Lions Club. This game will decide which team with be presented with cup at the District Convention at Torquay in March. We recently presented Honiton Brownies with some money with which to purchase equipment. Some of us went along

to one of their meetings in order to have our photograph taken with them. We may look a bit out of place, but they made us very welcome. Support of local organisations is one of the main objects of the Lions movement, and several of them have benefited over the years. We normally meet at The Deer Park Hotel at Weston near Honiton, but this is closed for re-furbishment, so at the moment we are ‘homeless’. Several of our members and their ladies attended the Seaton Lions Club Annual Charter Anniversary held at the Dolphin Hotel at Beer. We had a

very enjoyable evening, and met many old friends. Our Charter Anniversary will be held at the Tumbling Weir Hotel, Ottery St Mary, on Saturday 14th May. Don’t forget our ‘Friends of the Lions’ scheme,

which you can join for just £5. For this you will receive a newsletter, and will be able to take part in our Social activities etc. I am Bill King and can be contacted on 01404 813513, or lion.bill@btinternet.com

BBC’s DIY SOS comes to the rescue of an Ottery family By Ian Osprey BBC Editorial Researcher ‘DIY SOS: The Big Build’ is the BBC’s flagship DIY show and attracts around 6 million viewers in its prime time slot on BBC One. Presented by Nick Knowles, the show is an hour long programme in which we take on really ambitious builds to help out truly deserving families. We are filming the fourth episode of our 22nd series in Ottery St Mary where we will be helping the Wright family (consisting of Mum, Dad and their three sons). The three boys (ages 7, 9 and I1) are currently sharing one bedroom as the family live in a two bedroom bungalow! The Wrights started work on a small extension and loft conversion back in February 2009 but a run of bad luck has severely hampered their progress with the build. Dad (Ian) has had to take on all of the labour himself (with the occasional helping hand from his good friend John) as they don’t have the money to employ trades.Whilst all the work lan’s done is of an excellent standard, he just doesn’t have the time or the experience to complete such a massive build. But still he soldiers on.

Mum (Morny) suffers with chronic M.E and is unable to help with the build. She is being treated for depression because of the state of the house. On top of the build she has also had to nurse her mother through breast cancer and has suffered the death of her estranged father.Their youngest son Casper also has severe behavioural problems which has made life very difficult living in the shell of a small bungalow. It is a case of many cuts have made them weaker. They are in a terrible situation and have endured the winter with only half a roof and missing an external wall! The family are at

breaking point. ‘DIY SOS’ is their only hope. We feel that they represent hard working families who take on these projects with only the best intentions for their family but for reasons beyond their control things don’t work out as planned and they find themselves in dire straights. With the help of the local community and the generosity of local trades people, we’re going to finish the build. This will give the boys the rooms they need for their personal development and will lift the burden from Mum and Dad’s shoulders. Ian and Morny are integral mem-

bers of their community and it is their dream to start a music group for the children in the area. (See panel below left). Ian was a founding member of ‘Stage by Stage’ in Exeter and would like to replicate its success here in Ottery St Mary. By completing the build we will give them the time to do this and ultimately leave a lasting legacy for the family and the community. Readers Write Cormorant caught poaching in river Dear Sir, On my journey from Fairmile to Ottery I passed over the River Otter. A splash in the water caught my eye and to my suprise I saw a cormorant. I watched it for a minute or two before it swam downstream and flew away. Has anyone else seen this bird poaching? A Tribute to the Jasmine Amid the season’s taxing moods When nature’s pulse was low I knew someone in the garden would Arrange a cheering show. Would organise a bright display By setting up a stall With yellow blossoms every day Against a sheltering wall. Contrasting with the background grey It made a welcome sight, As if an artist touched a dark scene With a brush of light. While other shrubs are fast asleep I’m glad the jasmine’s here To lift our flagging spirits up Above surrounding drear. DERRICK V. RUGG

Jumble Sale success Ottery St. Mary Scout Group Mammoth Jumble Sale is over for another year! We had two very successful weekends with huge support from both far and near. The Group would like to thank the people of Ottery for once again so generously donating so many items to be sold. Thanks also go to the large number of people who came on both weekends looking for bargains. A donation from the Jumble Sale is to be given to the B.B.C. Radio Devon Air Ambulance appeal. On a slightly less positive note, the success of the two weekends were marred by the theft of one of our purpose designed advertising boards, taken from the gate of the Millennium Green. As a result, some of the hard earned funds raised will have to be spent on a new board for next year’s Jumble Sale - an unnecessary expense caused through somebody’s stupidity. Mary Moore, Organiser

FROM THE CHURCHES FROM THE CHURCHES IN OTTERY We have has our AGM for CTIO and Sue WakelyStoyle handed over her Chair’s role to the Revd Graham Tarn of the URC. Each year the chair’s position goes to a different CTIO representative so that it is shared out fairly and without being a ‘job for life’ which can be quite daunting for an already very busy person. It gives variety of approach which we value too. The meeting to discuss the Youth Work Report is scheduled for this month so we will be able to give you news of it in April. It will be a big undertaking if we find we can commit ourselves to it and will need not only financial backing but moral and practical support and encouragement.

UNITED REFORMED CHURCH Time for change? The URC holds its annual general meeting early this month. Philip Scoble and Judith Webber are standing down from the leadership team but will doubtless continue their involvement in various aspects of church life. Our URC minister, the Revd. Graham Tarn has just taken over as chair of Churches Together in Ottery. The healthy church questionnaire last November threw up thought-provoking comments and the leaders have already had one session considering the implications. This exercise will lead into a weekend when local URC representatives join the congregation and seek God’s guidance for the future. This month Women and Men hold Breakfasts. On March 5 the women meet at the Tumbling Weir at 8am. Please book with Ruth 850747. On Saturday March 26 at 8am the Men welcome as guest speaker the Revd. Alastair McCollum, vicar of Kilmington. The ex-King’s student recently attracted press attention when he took over as licensee of the Yarcombe Inn. Men meet in the Lamb and Flag, Batts Lane, beginning with a full English breakfast. Men from any church or none are welcome. Bookings to Philip (812118). Meanwhile we look forward to the inter-church house groups in Lent and plans are afoot for the Mothering Sunday service at the URC on April 3 at 10.30am.

THE PARISH CHURCH Over 80 children and adults gathered for the first Café Church at Ottery St Mary Parish Church in February. Our topic in March (on Sunday 13th at 11am) is ‘Faith – so what’ and we will be joined by the Bishop of Exeter. Café Church stands for Church Accessible For Everyone, and the aim of this service is to welcome church and non church goers alike to join together around tables enjoying good coffee and pastries, and to have the opportunity to discuss ‘life’ issues in a Christian context. It will be a very informal gathering with quiet time for reflection and the opportunity to listen to and engage in thought provoking discussions in a safe environment. For children there will be a crèche and group activities. Each month on the second Sunday ‘Café’ Church will tackle a particular life subject in a relaxed environment. Topics planned for future Café Church sessions include money management, bereavement, parenting and family life, developing good habits, staying healthy and keeping safe.

NEW LIFE CHURCH New Life church meets at the Kings School main hall at 10.30 am on a Sunday where we enjoy worship, biblical teaching and Sunday school groups for the children. We are always pleased to welcome visitors and are happy to pray with anyone who needs healing or who has any concerns. Home groups are held on a Wednesday evening and we are currently meeting on the first Wednesday of every month at the New Life chapel for a time of worship and prayer. ‘Groundbreakers’ is our very lively kids club for children aged 7 – 10 years. It meets during term time between 6pm and 7.30pm at the New Life Chapel on Friday evenings – all children are welcome. The Youth Group, for 11 – 18 yr olds, also meets every Friday from 7.30 to 9.30pm. If you want to know more about New Life or any of our activities contact Bruce and Heather Talbot at info@newlifeottery.org.uk or check out our website www.newlifeottery.org.uk.

THE SALVATION ARMY

THE METHODIST CHURCH The Methodist fellowship had a recent double Christening in the persons of Hannah Patel and Eva Matthews - granddaughters to Terry and Rosemary Palmer. A really warm welcome into the Christian community was made to them and we hope memories of the Service will stay in the hearts of all their families for many months to come. The midweek fellowship have committed to following the e100 readings - although as we don’t meet weekly we think it’ll take us 2 years to complete!! The coffee morning meeting continues with occasional new faces looking round the door. Everyone is welcome and we are always pleased to see you. We have had a receptive ‘audience’ at it for Rosalind Sopp’s little booklet of poems. As ever, services are Sunday mornings at 10.30am preachers as advertised on our board.

ST ANTHONY’S CATHOLIC CHURCH We used the occasion of Commitment Sunday to make Stella Munn a member of The Salvation Army at Ottery St Mary. What a great start to 2011.The photo shows Stella, with Harry holding the flag and me presenting her with her certificate. We were privileged, at the end of January, to have the visit of Major’s John & Anne Read from The Salvation Army’s Territorial Headquarters in London. Major John Read is the Salvation Army’s Ecumenical Officer for the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland so the visit coincided with the end of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Major John preached at the United Service at the Parish Church on the Sunday evening. Major Anne Read is currently our Anti-human trafficking coordinator for the UK. It was interesting to discover how wide spread the problem of trafficking is. During the presentation we were told that much of the chocolate we eat uses cocoa beans harvested by trafficked children but by choosing fairly traded chocolate we can be sure that it is also free from trafficked labour. In the early 1970’s Major Anne Read’s grandfather, Tom Vallelly, was in charge of The Salvation Army in Ottery. Anne used to come on holidays to Ottery during the summer. Another visit, during those days, was with a group of young Salvationists from Wales when the local paper asked, “Is Ottery ready for the arrival of some young evangelists in mini skirts?” During the weekend we were able to show Major Anne where he grandfather’s cottage was. The Salvation Army leaders from around the world recently met in London to elect our new General (International Leader). The selected candidate is Commissioner Linda Bond. The new General takes office on 2nd April and becomes the third woman to hold the post, the first being one of William Booth’s daughters in 1934. Steven Watson. Captain, Corps Officer, Ottery St Mary & Exmouth 01404 812159 Please do not hesitate to join any of our congregations or to join a Lent Group...you are always assured of a warm welcome.

The season of Lent will soon be upon us, where we prepare ourselves spiritually for the great festival of Easter. We hope to be sharing with other churches in the town for Lent study groups; an opportunity to share alongside others whose traditions and ways of worship may be foreign to us, but always immensely beneficial. We have just held our Churches Together in Ottery AGM, which marks the end of my year as Chair, and I would take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help and support during the year, and wish my successor well. Sue Wakley-Stoyle

SERVICE OF PRAYER FOR HEALING Sunday 13th March 2011 at 6.30pm at Ottery St Mary Parish Church A quiet service with sacred music, some space for silent reflection and the opportunity, if you wish, for a listening ear and prayer for healing for ourselves, for others, or for a situation in the world. All welcome even if you do not normally attend services.

A lovely Coffee Morning was held in the Feoffee Room at the end of January. It was the same day as the Scout Book Sale so a lot of people were in the town on a sunny morning and able to support us. Our popular Wayfarers Lunch (pictured) was held at the Royal British Legion on Saturday 19th February. This was very well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy the lunch we served, especially the desserts which they found hard to choose from the great selection. Our thanks to everyone for making the morning so successful and thank you to our ever faithful two ladies that have the mammoth task of washing up! Thank you also Val and Sue for your valued help and the British Legion for giving us such a lovely venue to hold this lunch. We have a few events lined up for the coming months, firstly an Afternoon Tea at the Methodist Church on Friday 18th March, from 3-00pm. On 31st March there is an informal evening at the Tumbling Weir, at 7-30pm. A Team from the hospice will be joining us. The

aim is to enlighten everyone about the work of the hospice, the In-care, Day Centre and Volunteer Groups. We would love to see you there enjoying a chat and coffee with us all. Ros and Dave are holding their Spring Coffee Morning and Table Top Sale at theVillage Hall, Newton Poppleford on Saturday 2nd April. from 10-00am. This is always a lovely morning and as I have said before is worth attending if only to take part in their fantastic Draw. We move on to May, when we are having an Evening Talk with Slides at the Village Hall,Tipton St John at 7-30pm. Alan Dolly from Exeter is presenting ‘Memories of Exeter’. Alan is well known for supporting Hospiscare throughout the area with his very interesting talks. He will probably start the evening with slides of the walk from the Turf along the Canal to the Quay and then after the break for coffee, his subject is Nostalgia. Please look out for the posters and tickets will be on sale shortly. The Ladies Midnight Walk is taking place at Exmouth on

21st May. This walk is a great fundraiser for the hospice. Ladies can register by ringing 01392 688020 or online at womensmidnightwalk.co.uk I can assure you this is a brilliant good fun night, rounded off about 2-00am with a bacon buttie and hot drink. Another very important diary date is

Saturday 18th June when our extremely popular Pudding Club is being held again at the Royal British Legion,West Hill. Tickets will be limited so please buy them early. I’ll obviously give you more details next time. I would like you all to make a note of a Tea Dance at Otter Nurseries on 6th July.

Merry Wives of Windsor at Payhembury Parish Hall One of Shakespeare’s bawdiest plays,The Merry Wives of Windsor, comes to Payhembury Parish Hall on Tuesday 15th March 2011. Performed by postgraduate students from Exeter University Drama Department, the performance promises to delight with its cross dressing and intrigue as bumbling Falstaff thinks he has a chance to steal the hearts of several ladies, especially two wealthy married women, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page. Neither is interested in the unfit and unattractive Falstaff, and when they declare to each other the receipt of Falstaff’s letters, they decide to play him along, resulting in a fine comic plot. Following last year’s very successful performance of The Tempest it is expected that this performance will sell out. Tickets £5, under 18s £3, are available from Di Somers at 01884 277390 or dianasomers05@yahoo.co.uk

More Drumming Workshops

The Sustainable Ottery African Drumming Workshops just keep getting busier. As usual the first hour and a half is for beginners and less experienced drummers with the second half being for people who have been drumming for longer. Everyone over 11 is welcome and the cost is £7.50 per session. Drums are available to borrow. If you want to know more call 01404 814217.

Feniton Church recovers from devastation

Following the tragic devastation and total destruction of the interior of Feniton Church by the freak storm on 30th. October 2008, the church has now had the basic refurbishment and repairs completed. A number of parishioners decided to form a group called the Friends of St.Andrews, Feniton, who will be asking the residents of Feniton to help with the upkeep of this ancient and beautiful church. The group are sending a pamphlet to each household in Feniton asking for their support and help by becoming a Friend. The aims of the group are to ensure the maintenance of the church and to encourage its use, not just for worship but also for community events. The chairman of the group, Valerie Stringer, said - “There are some exciting plans for using the church, not just for Sunday Service, but such things as concerts, candlelit suppers and an Antiques Roadshow. We hope the residents will support us”.

A (nearly) free lunch from Sustainable Ottery! In these days of rapidly increasing fuel costs where the price of petrol and diesel seems to go up every week, it is becoming more and more important for us to look at ways of getting what we need to survive locally, and food is one of the things we really can’t do without. What can we do regarding local food in Ottery? Sustainable Ottery, in co-operation with HogCO, are organising a fun event that will invite people to share their ideas for growing and producing more food locally, as well having the chance to use local produce, learn about growing vegetables organically, making soda bread, swapping and sowing seeds and sharing a local lunch. HogCo is a home grown, community owned 5 year programme working with rural communities across Devon to support local food projects. They help groups to join together to develop skills and seek opportunities to grow their own food. See http:// www.hogco-devonrcc.org.uk/ or call 01392 383423. The event, on Saturday March 12th at 11am in the Institute, will start with a short presen-

tation from HogCO.There will be ample opportunity for people to bring their ideas forward for growing, making and cooking local foods. A handson cookery session will follow with a chance to help make a seasonal salad and soda bread to go with the local vegetable soup for lunch. Following lunch there will be information about food and cooking generally, sowing and growing vegetables including planting vegetable seeds which youngsters can then take home with them at the end of the day. A seed swap will also take place where you can bring your half used packets of seed and swap them for something new to grow. This should enable you to grow new varieties without the cost of buying an expensive packet of seeds. Families are welcome. Tickets, costing only £1 per person, will be available from the Ottery Tourist Information Centre and Roberts. There are only a limited number available. For more information please call 01404 814217. Local Mental Health Project to build Therapy Garden The Side by Side Project, based in Ottery St Mary, is a small, supported volunteering Project, which is funded by the National Lottery and managed by EDVSA. The Project has been running for over 10 years and has evolved over this time.We offer people recovering from mental ill health the opportunity to learn about gardening and outdoor craft activities at our gardening site at Offwell, near Honiton. Working as part of a small team on the gardening plot or other activities that we offer gives the volunteers the opportunity to learn some new skills and make new friends in a positive and supportive setting. This enables people to build up their self confidence and contribute positively to community life and to have less reliance on health services. Some of our service users have now moved on to educational courses and paid employment. We take referrals throughout East Devon, from Mental Health Support Workers and GPs.We are constantly seeking new ways to enable our supported volunteers to express their creative ideas and also to promote this very valuable Project in the local community. Our plan for this year is to create a ‘Therapy Garden’, which will be user led and represent the four seasons. It will follow of the stages of recovery to mental wellness. When the Therapy Garden is complete we will have an Open Day for the local community to see what the service users have achieved and promote the Project to a wider audience. We will need many items to achieve our goal such as plants, compost, timber, pots, tools, gravel and bark chippings. If any local business is interested in making a financial contribution or donating any materials we would be extremely grateful. Any individual or business that assists us would be mentioned in any press coverage and obviously would be invited to our open day. The Project runs sessions from Monday to Thursdays and we currently have spaces on all days. If you, or anyone you know, is suffering from mental ill health and is interested in joining the Project please get in touch for more information. To get in touch please contact: Ellen Hunt, Side by Side Project Support Worker. Telephone: 01404 54904. e mail: ellen.hunt@edvsa.org.uk

A successful first year for Bay Tree Shoe Repairs

Martin Farrant was overjoyed on February 1st to see his business, Bay Tree Shoe Repairs, Ottery St Mary, celebrate its 1st anniversary. He has enjoyed his first year and is looking forward to expanding his services over the next 12 months. Martin said “I have had a most encouraging 1st year. The first 12 months required investment in tools, equipment and materials, a window display, signage and a web site. This hurdle is now over which means that my second year in business will be more profitable. During my first year I found Ottery people to be really friendly and very supportive. This has enabled me to build up a large loyal customer base which has underpinned my first year’s business and will hopefully expand in the future. I enjoy my work and I have developed great a rapport with many customers.” Bay Tree Shoe Repairs don’t just repair shoes. Martin also pro-

Everys to hold free Lasting Powers of Attorney seminar In March law firm Everys is holding a free day time seminar on the subject of Lasting Powers of Attorney at the Tumbling Weir Hotel, Ottery St Mary, on Thursday 17th March at 9.30am. A problem for many of us as we grow older is worrying what might befall us should our health deteriorate and what would happen should we become unable to make our own decisions with regard to our personal affairs and welfare. A Power of Attorney is a legal document that lets you appoint someone to either assist you or make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. Powers of Attorney have been around for a long time. However, in recent years the law has changed quite substantially. Changes to the Lasting Power of Attorney forms means that they are lengthy and have to be registered before they can be used. This can be confusing and it is often difficult to find clear information as to the best way to proceed. At the seminar Ian Hunt (pictured), Legal Executive in Everys’ Private Client Department will speak on the subject of the new Powers of Attorney

procedures with the aim of clarifying the process. Ian and members of his team will be available to answer questions at the end of the session. If you would like to attend this seminar please call Pauline Roberts on 01404 540950 by Tuesday 1st March. Pauline can be contacted by email at pauline.roberts@everys.co.uk. Everys’ Ottery St Mary office will be officially reopening on Monday 17th March 2011. Ian Hunt will be holding a free legal clinic every Tuesday between 9.00am and 11.00am. To arrange a free half an hour appointment on this subject or any other topic please telephone Christine Hopkins on 01404 540954 or email christine.hopkins@everys.co.uk

Tony Benn to speak at The Big Question discussion Later Life Forum seminar at The King’s School

Ottery Later Life Forum will be holding its second Seminar in its Talking About series entitled ‘Older people and democracy - Do we still count?’ on Thursday 31st March at The Institute, Ottery St Mary from 10.00am to 3.30pm. The guest speaker will be Tony Benn supported by Ian McKintosh and Tony Simpson. In a question and answer session with the speakers the Seminar will examine: z Can the over 50’s influence Democratic processes? How? z Have we had our day? Is there still opportunity to influence policy and, indeed, do we want to bother? z Looking back on your life, could you say that you have played a role; either locally or nationally where you have influenced policy? z Is it now time for youngsters to take over?

z Is our knowledge and exper-

ience important for the future well-being of our society? Tony Benn is joining us for the day (he will be 86 a couple of days after the Seminar!) and is as active and involved in politics as ever. Is he a role model for all of us? Let us hear and learn from him about today’s issues and reflect on how he has influenced and made policy as a Minister in Government and in the House of Commons. Contributing to the discussions from their own life and work experiences are two local people, Ian McKintosh, a retired lawyer and judge and Tony Simpson, whose career has taken him into many aspects of social and community action. Entrance, including coffee on arrival and a prepared picnic lunch, £15.00 p.p. (£ 9.00 for Later Life Forum Members).

The Big Question, to be hosted at the King’s School, Ottery St Mary, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 22nd March will be a public, open debate where expert contributors will stimulate discussion on current ethical issues.Topics up for discussion are: ‘Genes and Embryos: are we on a slippery slope?’; ‘Does prison work?’ and ‘Is religion good for society?’ The event is part of the national “Celebrating RE” month and GCSE and A level Religious

Coleridge Playgroup News We’re now half way through our Spring term at the PreSchool and all our children have settled down well and all are having lots of fun learning and making new friends. We have now added a Walk-odile to our walking bus between the Pre-School and the Primary School. This great system allows the staff to safely walk the children to and from the PreSchool. It attracted a lot of attention from the press and local council as we’re the first PreSchool in the whole of Devon to use one.The children love it too and we get lots of requests from the other children who all want to join in – we may need to buy a second one! The Pre-School will be holding its AGM on Thursday 10th

King’s students stunning ‘Into the Future’ Fashion Show As I write this report, we are still tidying up after two fantastic nights of our “Into the Future” Fashion Show 2011. This took place on Thursday 10th February and Friday 11th February in a transformed School Hall. We had endless support from our students who were choreographed, dressed and fantastically made up to perform and display their outfits. The emphasis of the evening was sustainable and recycled designs along with textiles course work. There were fabulous dance routines normally kept within the school day and rarely seen by parents and family We were wowed by the vocalists too.The event was fully appreciated by the audience and students who got their chance to shine. Special thanks must go to Otter Nurseries who allowed us to showcase their clothing and outerwear and for their very generous raffle donations. We had a last minute panic with ice creams and thankfully Taste of Sidmouth turned up with the goods! Thanks also to Ottery Tourist Information Centre for selling our tickets and providing raffle prizes. So many teachers present and past put in a lot of extra hours.

Although we raised a profit, the event was more about the opportunity for the students than about raising funds. The PTFA Volunteers provided a slick service on the refreshments front as always. We are now planning our next fund

This firm has a clear vision for Ottery

Opticians Brian Knapman and Eiohn Hayes have joined forces to create Knapman Hayes, opticians specialising in home visits. Brian, who has been in optics in Torquay since 1961, disposed of his practice in 1988 and subsequently started a domiciliary service for patients who are housebound and unable to visit a high street optician. Knapman Hayes expanded into Ottery St Mary some time ago and even though the firm is based in Torquay,

Eiohn lives in Chudleigh so visits to the town are well within reach. There is no charge for the eye examination or visit if the patient is over 60 or registered as housebound, and spectacles are free if the patient receives income support or pension credit guarantee credit. Brian said: “The main problem we find is that people are unaware that this service is available, and seem very surprised when they discover they can have

their eyes tested at home, free.” “We are not in competition with high street opticians as we only do home visits. In fact, several local opticians already use our services for their own patients.” Eiohn explained: “We offer a complete service. If spectacles are needed, we supply them from a large selection of modern frames, both metal and plastic, and some designer frames. We deliver and fit all our spectacles so there is no need for the patient to have to leave the house. And if we are unable to visit ourselves, our colleague Kathy will come to visit you for any alterations or adjustments.”

Knapman-Hayes are based at 9a Ilsham Road, Wellswood, Torquay, telephone 01803 294418, and they would welcome any enquiries from people living in Ottery St Mary and environs. Please contact them soon for further information or for an appointment.

Ottery Scouts and Explorers to make new Dutch friends After the success of the Scout & Explorers first international visit to Germany in 2010, the group has decided to visit another of our European neighbours. 40 Scouts and Explorers aged 10 to 16 years will depart from Ottery to spend 9 days based in Delft, Holland. The young people and leaders will be based at the Kruithuis Scoutcentrum, which was originally the 17th century gunpowder magazine for Holland. The activities for the visit will be finalised when a number of the leaders will make a preparation visit in April. However, following a presentation the young people voted on their most popular activities to undertake which includes

water skiing, theme park visit, tour of Operation Market Garden battlefields and war graves, day visit to Amsterdam in addition to sampling typical Dutch life.

Group Scout Leader John Green said of the planned visit “An international visit does not come cheap and we have already started applying for grants as well as planning fund

raising events to help cover the cost of the trip. However, all of this will be worthwhile when you see what the young people get out of the experience scouting makes adventure available to everyone.” If you would like to learn more about the fun and adventure Scouting brings please visit our web site at www.otteryscoutsuk.org.uk. Held over two weekends, the annual event is reputed to be the largest jumble sale in the South West. John Green, Group Scout Leader, said “Scouting provides a great opportunity for young people. In Ottery we believe that young people develop most when they are ‘learning by doing,’ when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves. Through the team of volunteer Leaders and Adult Supporters we deliver an exciting programme of activities such as caving, kayaking, gliding, hiking, scuba diving, climbing, international adventures and weekend experiences. In addition our young people participate in the Duke of Edinburgh programme as well as Young Leader training.” If you would like to learn more about the fun and adventure

Venture Scouts win trophies galore for carnival float Ottery St Mary Venture Scouts Carnival Club had their best season ever season in 2010 attending many carnivals in Devon, Dorset and Somerset including Sturminster Newton for the first time. Awards won in 2010 include 8 1st prizes, including first at Taunton, 2 2nd prizes, and two spirit of carnival awards. This is a fantastic achievement considering the majority of the members are under the age of 20.They definitely make up for their lack of experience with their enthusiasm. Following the success of 2009, we built a pirate themed float complete with boat, rotating capstan, treasure chests that opened and cannons. Over 400 light bulbs were added to the float for 2010 providing a challenge for the electricians. The colourful costumes were hand made by Pat Hamilton and contrasted well with the boat. The artistic talent of some of the newer members gave the finishing touches to a well constructed float.

We were very kindly sponsored by Halls Estate Agents and Bay Tree Shoe Repairs and the club would like to thank the sponsors for their help in 2010. Building of the float for 2011 is already underway.

Carpenters, electricians and those with a creative eye to help build the float, and anyone who wants to be on it, are welcome. For further details please contact Chris Hamilton on 01404 813865.

What a busy time for Ottery St Mary Beavers First week we started back in 2011 saw the Beavers enjoying a Christmas Party. It was not that we had gone mad! just that our original party was cancelled after Ottery was deluged with snow before Christmas. Needless to say the party was a great success with a mix of games and good food for all the Beavers to enjoy. Preparation for the Scout Group Annual Jumble Sale meant that the Beavers moved out of the Scout Centre and travelled to Exeter to work with one of the Scout Association activity badge sponsors. Pets at Home invited the Beavers to go shopping and find various items on a shopping list - these included dog leads, hamster toys, fish food and live reptile food. They then showed the staff their goodies and were shown several small animals. These animals were passed around for Beavers to

cuddle. They included Guinea pigs, a rat, dwarf hamsters and two beautiful rabbits. Information was given to the Beavers about the care and nutrition of these animals and were also given a work book to fill in.At the end of the evening the Beavers went home having had a great time and the rabbits breathed a sigh of relief. The second week of the Jumble Sale (with the Scout Centre still a major sorting area) the Beavers visited Ottery St. Mary Parish Church. They found out about lots of interesting features of the church and even enjoyed a trip up the tower to look at the bells. The Beavers all wrote a simple prayer and at the end of the evening each Beaver lit a candle and thought about people who were not as fortunate as themselves. Since the visit to the parish church the Beavers have been presented with their faith badge.

Back at the Scout Centre the Beavers were in construction mode and made three beautiful castles out of “junk”.At the end of the evening, the leftovers were carefully sorted into recycling piles for Fox to take to the tip. If you have a child

aged between 5¾ and 7½ years and would be interested in joining the adventure at Beavers please complete the Membership Application Form which can be found at our web site www.otteryscoutsuk.org.uk just follow the link.

Are you finding it hard to pay the utility bills? Was keeping warm this winter a struggle? Well maybe we can help. As part of our commitment to reducing energy consumption, Sustainable Ottery has joined the Energy Savings Trust ‘Green Communities’ project. The aim is to try and establish a Carbon Footprint for the town and to identify areas where energy efficiencies can be made. We’re hoping that you will support this scheme by adding information about your energy use online (paper copies available too) into a secure Energy Savings Trust web location set up just for Ottery St Mary, to estimate your own personal carbon footprint. Using the information that you supply, it will also provide you with tailor-made suggestions on how you can reduce your energy use in the future. All those who enter their details will be entered into a prizedraw with a suitable energyefficient prize! From all the information gathered, we can make an estimate for the town and the more people that take part, then the better the estimate will be. This can be used as a benchmark to show any progress that the town has made in energy savings in the years ahead. If you wish to enter your details now, in advance of the meeting then please visit the website: www.greencommunitiescc.org.uk/ group/otterystmary and follow the instructions. This scheme could result in extra grants to help with insulation, cavity–fill, double-glazing etc. together with free energy audits, energy-

saving measures and possibly renewable energy schemes for community buildings. To get the ball rolling we have organised a talk to coincide with ‘Climate Week’ on Thursday 24th March at 7.30pm in The King’s School which will look at why it is imperative to become more energy-efficient for both environmental and economic purposes. We are pleased to announce that Derrick Ryall, Head of Climate Change at the Met. Office, will be taking part and will talk about climate change, its causes, the most up-to-date predictions and the implications for us in the future. Also speaking will be energy advisors with help and tips on how we can reduce our energy consumption in the home and with personal transport by reducing your fuel bills as well as your carbon footprint. We hope to have lots of information on hand to help you keep your bills down, what grants are available to help you make your home more energyefficient, local car-sharing and lift-sharing scheme and renewable energy etc. If you bring along an idea of your annual gas and electricity usage (kW/ h), then we may be able to calculate your carbon footprint on the night (wi-fi permitting!) With larger-than-ever energy bills dropping through your letter box and petrol costing a day’s wage to fill-up the car, you can’t afford to miss this. For more details or if you require help with transport to the meeting, then please ring Jill Dixon on 01404 811067 or info@sustainableottery.org.uk

At our Inner Wheel meeting held on 17th January we were delighted to welcome RoseMarie Burrows, Vice Chair of Otter Vale Friends of Hospiscare as our guest, and presented a cheque for £1,500 which had been raised at our quiz in November. Rose-Marie gave a brief overview of the work carried out by Hospiscare in the Ottery St Mary district and advised that the funds would go towards supporting the 2 nurses who current served the area. In February we held our ‘Sunday Challenge’ when we invited our Rotary partners to join us for very tasty and traditional Sunday Roast Beef lunch at Gittisham Village Hall followed

by some light hearted fun challenges. In the past the Rotarians have beaten us at skittles, darts and 10 pin bowling so this time they had to try their hand at making a flower corsage, icing cup cakes and making and decorating a paper hat! Needless to say on this occasion the

More funding information on EDDC’s website Updated grants pages now easier to access

In a challenging economic climate, many voluntary and community organisations are looking for ways to help them fund their work or projects. East Devon District Council has a funding and grants section on its website, which has recently been completely updated and is now easier to find. Whilst the Council doesn’t have the resources to offer funding itself, what the site does offer is a guide to grants opportunities throughout Devon and further afield. The site is divided into sections so that, for example, if you are

looking for support for an arts project; if you are setting up a project, such as a sensory garden or holiday play scheme, for young and disabled people; or you want to start up a community owned shop in a rural area, then you will find information on the site to help you. Contact details, including web addresses where applicable, are included under each funding stream, so it is made as easy as possible for you to find what you are looking for. The grants pages can be found on EDDC’s website at http:// www.eastdevon.gov.uk/grants

ladies did extremely well although a valiant attempt was made at all three events by the boys. We do wonder what events they will put forward next year though….perhaps DIY may be on the cards? Over the next couple of months we have a number of forth-

coming events such as our Inter-Club meeting when we shall welcome all other Inner Wheel Clubs in our District to an Afternoon Tea, and our Overseas Meeting in April when Hugh Scudder of Christian Response to Eastern Europe will be telling us of his Charity’s work in taking articulated lorries laden with humanitarian aid to the poorest areas of Moldova. These are distributed without charge to benefit as many as possible. As you can see, we already have a very busy year planned - all we need now is some warmer weather and a touch of spring to brighten each day and encourage us in our activities. More next time! Rotary Round-Up NEWS FROM THE ROTARY CLUB OF OTTER VALLEY

Our first meeting in our normal venue was on the 4th January. Our speaker for this evening was Mike Hull from the Devon Drivers Centre at West Point. He chose as his topic “Drive Safely for Longer”. Sensibly, he asked around the club what the actual medical and eyesight requirements; it was quite surprising how many were unsure. He then moved on to medications and their possible effects. Having looked around the room and assessed our overall age group, he pointed out that prescription drugs could be as dangerous as drugs that are generally misused, and the drink/drive rules applied equally to them as the others. So if you are on prescription drugs take advice on their side effects. He strongly advised us to look for sources of help, particularly family and friends. If they advocated that now might be the time to give up, don’t get cross. They are probably right. If the doctor puts you on medication or diagnoses a particular condition, ask about its effect on your driving. Last July, the club held its major fund-raising event, Sail4Heroes,

which raised £20,000. At the end, we had only collected in £15,000 so at the presentation in London, only cheques for £7,500 were presented to the two beneficiaries, the Royal British Legion and Help4Heroes.The rest of the monies, including Gift Aid, had been all received by this January so each was owed a cheque for £2500. Accordingly, on the 11th January, the club invited the local representative of Help4Heroes, Jessica Colson, to come to the club and talk about the charity and receive her cheque. The charity was founded by Bryn and Emma Parry, Bryn being an ex-serviceman himself. He served in the army for ten years. After leaving, he heard of an acquaintance who had been injured in Afghanistan and felt that more needed to be done for these people and they decided to put their skills to helping these unfortunate folks. Headley Court, the military rehabilitation centre, desperately needed a new hydro-pool, but it would cost 8 million pounds. Undeterred, they got together 300 people and raised this sum. Buoyed by their

success, they went on to raise a total of £12 million in the first year; in the 3 years up to October of last year, they have raised a total of £80 million – no mean feat. All donated monies go to the charity, merchandising pays all administration costs. Of the money raised, £3.5 million has gone on a new Combat Stress wing in Birmingham hospital; £6 million towards the Quick Reaction Fund and £15 million towards other recovery programmes. She concluded by pointing out that the charity only worked forwards, so would not assist those injured in the First Gulf War or the Falklands. For our next meeting on the 18th, we were joined by Area Scouts Co-ordinator, John Green and Ottery Scout Leader, Bruce Harvey who reported on their joint Scout camp with the Scouts of their twinning town in Germany, Ilsfeld. The idea of such a camp started back in 2007 with a discussion with the twinning group from Ilsfeld who had brought some Scout leaders with them. The following year, 2010, 40 Ottery Scouts went to Ilsfeld; the main idea being to build on the excellent relations/friendships which had been established at the first camp. Their hosts took them to Stuttgart, a major German city; for many of the Ottery Scouts this was their first visit to a foreign city of such a size. They showed them how to make campfire chairs which they were able to take home with them and many other things. Many friendships were formed, with email addresses and mobile phone numbers being exchanged. It was not just the youngsters who benefited, the leaders got to know their charges better and were able to help them become more independent.

This report really showed the value to the community of the twinning programme and the considerable advantage it provided to the local youth. For the next meeting, we had the other beneficiary of Sail4Heroes, the Royal British Legion, to talk to us in the form of the Chairman of the Devon Branch, Ralph Howard-Williams, a retired Royal Marine and a fellow Rotarian from Exmouth Raleigh. He started his talk by agreeing that the Legion although it retained the Guardianship of Remembrance needed to get away from the image of old men drinking beer. He began by going back to the end of World War I when the soldiers returned to a “land fit for heroes” only to find that there were no jobs and most of them were out on the streets. The sad plight of these men lead to the formation of many charities, one of which was the Earl Haig Fund, later to become the Legion which has looked after exServicemen ever since. However, we are now in the era of Iraq and Afghanistan and the mission of the Legion has changed. It is now dealing much more with the welfare of the ex-service community, both the servicemen and their families; the injured and their needs; their interests and fostering them and last but not least the memory of those that have fallen. It is a big organisation with 2,600 branches, 620 clubs and 34,000 members with 103 branches overseas. It is the largest service charity with an income of £200 million a year and is the 4th largest charity in the country. The Club members were most impressed with Ralph’s talk and it clarified many queries raised by members thus concluding a very interesting month of speakers.

OTTERY FOOTBALL CLUB NEWS Looking back at February The First team pulled themselves up to 5th from bottom, having beaten high-flying Appledore away 0-1.Appledore is long way to go and a hard team to beat, so a great result. Unfortunately, as has been the case all season, we then lost a game to Exmouth that we could have won in the first 20 minutes. Chances went begging after we’d established a one nil lead and then we forgot to turn out for the second half, going on to lose badly in the end. Frustrating for all involved. On a more positive note, we had a great turn out for the Photo Shoot on 6th February, with 120 kids taking part, with all our teams being represented. We also had Coaches,Veterans and Tipton 2nds photos done. The weather just held out, with the rain starting just as we finished the final photos. A fantastic bit of organising by Alison, and well done to the coaches for keeping everything ticking over. The pictures have now arrived and the team coaches will be organising distribution. If you’re in a hurry to see them, just get in touch with the team’s coach now.

On the social front we had Carnival Bingo on the 13th, well attended as always. At the time of writing, we are looking forward to our Race Night on 25th. All tables have now been sold I believe. Upcoming Events In March we host the East Devon Carnival AGM on 17th, starting at 7.30pm. No Carnival Bingo in March, the next session will be on 10th April. How to contact the Club Come along and visit, whether you are into Football or not. The Club has Pool Table, Darts Board and Bar. OTTERY WALKERS NEWS Our first two February walks were what I call “chunky”plenty of ups and downs. The Thursday walk with 23 walkers started in Membury, a village within the Blackdown Hills area of outstanding natural beauty. Membury is a village of contrasting buildings from quaint terraced cottages to modern properties on the village edge. Leaving the car park it was a steady climb past the 13th century church crossing Goyle Acre Lane to reach the high point at Yarty Copse. We then went down to Yarty Farm then on to a footpath along side the River Yarty to reach Beckford Bridge, an ancient packhorse bridge where we had our coffee break. After coffee we followed paths across farm land to Lea Hill Farm and then on past Rock Mill for a climb up to Membury Fort. The views were fantastic from this 600 feet plus high point. We then returned down to Membury for the journey home. A good walk in good weather. Our Saturday walk started at Coney‘s Castle. We needed wet

weather gear to start with but apart from a little drizzle we had a dry walk - but with plenty of mud! We followed the Wessex Ridgeway before joining the Liberty Trail to Knapp Farm. From there we crossed many fields to the Monarch’s Way. We reached a small stream where the bridge was taped off as a couple of planks were broken. Even so some crossed the bridge whilst others crossed via the ford and a chance to wash mud off their boots. It was along this part of the walk a lady walker found that the sole of her boot was half off. A makeshift repair with a boot lace tied the sole back in place. This repair was repeated several times before the end. Going through the farmyard at Higher Wyld Farm we were

A.J’s Big Band is preparing for another packed year of engagements performing across the region with a schedule of concerts and dances featuring big band classics both old and new. Although a comparative newcomer to the band, but already established as a firm favourite with her stunning vocal style, is the band’s singer Paula Mitchell. Paula’s musical career spans 25 years of performing all around the UK and abroad including singing at the prestigious Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland and the Novotel in Times Square, New York. She has worked at Mama Stones, Exeter, as head of artistic development and as voice coach. Most recently she performed backing vocals on

Joss Stones latest album “Colour Me Free”. MD Ken Parr comments;‘Paula is a truly outstanding Big Band vocalist with a big personality. Her presence lights up the stage and audiences love her interpretation of both ballads and uptempo numbers’. A recent concert review recorded ‘with her outstanding voice Paula’s range, emotional depth and downright sassiness thrilled the audience throughout both sets, bringing alive hits by Irving Berlin, Burt Bacharach and Ella Fitzgerald classics.’ A.J’s Big Band with vocalist Paula can be heard at the Manor Pavilion, Sidmouth, Friday 11th March at 8.00pm. Independent Financial Advice

If you have been watching the new BBC series ‘Faulks on Fiction’ (or even if you haven’t) you may be interested in the accompanying book. This is a compelling and personal take by novelist Sebastian Faulks on the story of how the dazzling creations of novelists have helped to shape the world we live in. This is an engaging literary and social history that focuses not on the writers but their creations, from Tom Jones to Sherlock Holmes, Mr Darcy to Lady Chatterley this book celebrates the act of novelistic creation and how the most enduring fictional characters have helped to map the British psyche. This is a hardback with a cover price of £20 but we have it on offer at just £9.99. Turning to fiction we are expecting Ian Mcewan’s novel ‘Solar’ to arrive in paperback during the first week in March. Michael Beard is a Nobel prize-winning

physicist whose best work is behind him. Trading on his reputation, he speaks for enormous fees, lends his name to the letterheads of renowned scientific institutions and halfheartedly heads a governmentbacked initiative tackling global warming.A compulsive womaniser, Beard finds his fifth marriage floundering. But this time it is different: she is having the affair, and he is still in love with her. When Beard’s professional and personal worlds collide in a freak accident, an oppor-tunity presents itself for Beard to extricate himself from his marital mess, reinvigorate his career and save the world from environmental disaster. Ranging from the Arctic Circle to the deserts of New Mexico,“Solar” is a serious and darkly satirical novel, showing human frailty struggling with the most press-

ing and complex problem of our time. A story of one man’s greed and self-deception, it is a profound and stylish new work from one of the world’s great writers. Normally priced at £7.99 we have this on offer for just £4.99. Another big name just out in paperback is Kate Atkinson. ‘Started Early, Took My Dog’ starts off as a day like any other for security Chief Tracy Waterhouse, until she makes a purchase she hadn’t bargained for. One moment of madness is all it takes for her humdrum world to be turned upside down with fear and danger at every turn. The cover price is £7.99 but we have it on offer at £4.99. On a lighter note we also have Katie Fforde’s new paperback ‘A Perfect Proposal’ in stock. Described as a funny fresh and lively read this is perfect for light reading and since it is also

on offer at just £4.99 it won’t break the bank either! Turning to the children’s section World Book day is the 3rd of March and we will be accepting the £1 World Book Day tokens as usual. These can either be redeemed against the special £1 books (making them free!) or used against the purchase of the other children’s books we have in the shop so hurry along and make the most of them! The Curious Otter is available for orders and enquiries on 01404 814469.
