GAFFER’S NOTES SPONSORED BY

G

ood afternoon and welcome to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One match with Shrewsbury Town. I’d like to extend that welcome to Sam Ricketts, his staff and players, as well as the directors and supporters who have made the trip from Shropshire to Highbury for today’s game. Since my last programme notes, we have seen a couple of additions to the squad. Most recently we have added Callum Connolly to the group, joining on loan from Everton until the end of the season. I’m sure you’ll give him a warm Highbury welcome today. We have also secured the permanent signing of Lewie Coyle, on a long-term contract from Leeds United. This is a big statement from the club to

2

secure such a promising player over the next few years, after the impact that we’ve seen him have on our team over the last three years. I’m sure that you share my delight that Lewie has decided that the best place for his football is with us at Fleetwood Town, and it goes without saying that we’re really pleased to have him with us. We are now in a really exciting time of the season for the team, with games coming thick and fast. The competition within League One is high, with the difference between the top of the league and mid-table only a couple of wins, and we’re happy to be in the mix at this stage of the season. Every game is a big one for us, starting today against a tough opponent in Shrewsbury. We need you

the supporters to continue being with us on our journey and help the team to achieve their goals this season. Our record at Highbury over the last 12 months has been superb, so the challenge is to continue that into 2020. Enjoy the game,

COYLE GLEWIE AFFER’ S FEATURE NOTES

LEWIE COYLE NO FEATURE GAF F ER’S T ES

COYLE COMMITS TO FLEETWOOD STAY WORDS: DAVID MITCHELL

Lewie Coyle has recently signed a three-and-a-half year deal with Fleetwood Town, and is looking to build on what he has already done at the club.

T

he ink was barely dry on Lewie Coyle’s three and a half-year contract as a collective sigh of relief swept around Highbury and Poolfoot. One of their favourites had secured his future with Fleetwood Town. There was obvious pleasure expressed by the full back. “I’m absolutely delighted to be able to commit my future to a club that has given me massive opportunities and made me feel very welcome over the last three years.” It is a permanent move from Leeds United which puts an end to a remarkable run of games as a loan player. On 7 December 2019, Lewie made his 100th EFL appearance for Fleetwood, just down the tramline at Blackpool. He joined an exclusive club of players who have completed a century on loan at one club. You might struggle to name one but there is an example not far from here, “I’m very proud of that achievement. Not too many have done it. I believe that one was Paul Gallagher at Preston but it can’t be a very long list. “Being on loan at one place for so long is an unusual path but, let’s face it, every player has a different story to tell and mine’s just panned out this way. “I’m convinced the club’s used the same story each year, just changed the dates!” On reaching his hundred, the twentyfour year old became only the thirteenth Fleetwood player to do so in the EFL. There is opportunity and time aplenty to get past his predecessor, Conor McLaughlin, who made 172 EFL appearances between 2012 and 2017. It is a position which has offered much stability during Town’s Football League career.

44

“I’m really enjoying my football at the minute and am playing some of my best, in my opinion. “Why wouldn’t I want that to carry on? I never thought that getting this far would happen so quickly at one club. “Milestones like that aren’t something I’ll particularly look back on in retirement. I want to savour each now and reach out for the next. That’s an approach that keeps me hungry for success.” Whenever I chat with Lewie, the subject of family is never far away. He takes so much comfort from the two families in his life, at home and at Fleetwood. One of four sons who are all professional sportsmen, in golf, boxing and football, he cherishes the limited time that they can spend with each other around their career commitments. “I miss them all like crazy and we try to make the most of the opportunities when we get together.” One notable example recently was the home game against Bristol Rovers during the Christmas period. It proved to be a real family affair. “Usually there will be certain family members at the games but for Bristol Rovers everyone was there, including my nephews, and to walk out with them, as mascots, was a very special experience for me. “I think that my brother Rocco was on the touchline for a while taking pictures. We all had a catch up over a cup of coffee and looking from the outside it all looks good and close, which it is, but we all have to make sacrifices to continue our professional careers and there is never enough time with each other. “I know that I’ve got time after football for that.”

Lewie is eager to give back to parents who sacrificed a great deal in time and energy to get him to training up and down the M62 from Hull to Elland Road and matches all over the country. “I’ll never forget what my mum and dad have given me and manage to get home to Hull once or twice each week.” Form and fitness have helped achieve consistent results since his debut, in August 2017. Since that home game against Rotherham, the full-back has missed just nine league games. “I like to think of myself as a robust player. “Through my career, touch wood, I’ve prided myself on being available for games and training sessions. “I don’t miss many and by being available I’m giving myself the best chance to impress the manager going forward. “I remember winning my first three games on loan and joking with Cairnsy how easy this is! “Reality quickly kicked set in and I saw what a ride I was in for. Now I truly know how tough this league can be. “It really is wide open but I know you’ll be rewarded for hard work over the course of a season. “Scunthorpe away last season was obviously a stand-out game with it being our biggest away win in the league. We felt a performance was coming that night and there was more to come at Doncaster. “These are good sides with big following and to go to their place and come away with such victories was a great thrill. “We’ve been formidable at home which is pleasing and against Bristol Rovers at Christmas we turned in one of our best

"I'M DELIGHTED TO BE ABLE TO COMMIT MY FUTURE TO A CLUB THAT HAS GIVEN ME MASSIVE OPPORTUNITIES AND MADE ME FEEL WELCOME OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS." performances in a long time without any result. “Nottingham Forest away in this season’s EFL Cup was a thrill, despite the result. “I got my Leeds United debut there in the Championship four years ago. Playing at grounds like that makes you want to strive for more.” To what extent has Lewie retained a relationship with Leeds United, a club which has been such a big part of his footballing life? “There has been little contact while I’ve been here. My job is to do my best for Fleetwood Town. “Having said that, I do still keep an eye out for the Leeds result. “After all, I’ve been connected with the club since I was seven years old. “My parents would sacrifice much to get me to evening training from Hull after a day at school. “I’ve played against some big Championship clubs with them. Liam Cooper, my best friend is there and I’m very friendly with Kalvin Phillips. “The club’s always going to play a huge part in my life.” The football family is deeply important for Lewie, nowhere more so than at Fleetwood. He is one of five in the current squad who have completed over one hundred EFL games and this familiarity has led to a number of close friendships forged for life.

“You will always have friends in football but in many cases they are no more than work colleagues and that’s something you have to wrap your head round. “Beyond that, I have made some strong friendships and feel very fortunate to be in that position. “I’ve known Cairnsy since I’ve been at Leeds, Biggo’s a Yorkshire lad who is easy to get on. Then there’s Paddy, Kyle, Ash Eastham and Wes. I’ve shared a lot of experiences with all of them. “Wes and I have built up a good understanding over three seasons on the right side of the pitch. “It takes time and we talk all the time about our roles and how we interact, particularly when attacking. “Paddy and I spend time together in training, working on crosses. I might hit between six and twelve each time, often on Fridays, and we are very much on the same wavelength. “I must give Clint Hill a special mention for staying out with me for hours and helping with the crosses. I spoke to him as far back as last season. “He was looking to develop this part of my game and look for more assists. He felt it was the only part that was missing. So, he put some sessions on, brought in the goalkeeper and Paddy and I have developed it from there.”

One thing definitely missing from his Fleetwood CV is a goal. “I knew you were going to bring that up! I’m still trying but beginning to think that someone’s got a curse on me! I’ve been so close so often.” An effort in the early stages last Saturday at Burton Albion was the latest to come agonisingly close, his shot narrowly wide of the post. “I enjoy going forward, that’s what is required of full backs these days. My assists speak for themselves and there have been plenty of contributions in build-ups. However, a goal would be nice!” Just when you thought that footballers like Lewie were at the cutting edge of rock and roll, he tells me of how he and others pass time on the coach journeys. “The big thing at the minute is Ludo on an app. Yes, I mean the game we used to play as kids. There are four of us in a game and it gets pretty competitive at times, believe me! Uno was another favourite until one of lads lost his head and some cards went missing!’ Fans appreciate players who put in a shift and Lewie’s wholehearted efforts in attack and defence have endeared him to the Cod Army, who now know that they can continue appreciating his efforts in a more permanent capacity at the club.

Hello and welcome back to Highbury for today’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Shrewsbury Town. Let’s get behind Joey Barton and the lads today as they are looking to bounce back from last week’s result against Burton Albion! Welcome back to Prestons Jewellers, who are sponsoring their second game of the season with us. They were last here at our Emirates FA Cup tie against Portsmouth earlier this month. We hope you have a great day with us! We’ve been busy behind the scenes here at Fleetwood, as we announced that F Parkinson Limited and PHH Solicitors are going to continue to sponsor the Cod Army for the rest of the 2019/20 season. We are delighted to have both companies on board and hope to see you in the Parkside Suite soon!

CONTACT OUR COMMERCIAL MANAGER, JOE FLEETW0OD, BY EITHER RINGING 01253 775080 (OPTION 2) OR EMAILING JOE. FLEETWOOD@FLEETWOODTOWNFC.COM

MATCH Sponsor PRESTONS JEWELLERS Today’s match sponsor is Prestons Jewellers. The Prestons story is as relevant today as it has been over the decades. A forward thinking business with a rich heritage that, since 1869, has only ever been owned by two families. Their four showrooms in Guildford, Leeds and Wilmslow showcase the world’s finest watch houses in Patek Philippe, Rolex and Tudor alongside an exquisite selection of fine diamond, coloured gemstone and bespoke jewellery. Over the years’ generations of families have become customers of Prestons and many have become friends. Today, their teams look forward to welcoming both new and existing clients to our showrooms in Surrey, Cheshire and Leeds.

COMMUNITY TRUST AWARDED PREMIER LEAGUE FANS FUND GRANT!

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL REPRESENT COMMUNITY TRUST IN REGIONAL FINALS OF GIRLS CUP!

Fleetwood Town Football Club and the Community Trust have recently been awarded a grant of £18,200 from the Premier League Fans Fund. The grant will enable the club and Community Trust to run workshops to engage with new supporters, particularly youngsters, females and families, helping to ensure the club continues to have an inclusive fan base. To celebrate this grant, the club and the Community Trust will be holding a dedicated community day in March at a designated Fleetwood Town home match. Families will be treated to pre-match entertainment before being given the opportunity to take part in a half-time penalty shoot-out and crossbar challenge at Highbury. The club will also look to recruit a cohort of volunteers, who will be trained to support the ongoing development of these pre-match and half-time activities from next season.

Carr Hill High School represented Fleetwood Town Community Trust last week at the EFL Trust North West Regional Finals, held at Wigan Athletic. The team had previously won the regional finals at Poolfoot Farm against 14 other local high schools, which enabled them to represent the Trust on the road to Wembley. The team were drawn in the group stages against Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End and Wigan Athletic. Fleetwood Town were undefeated in their games against Blackburn, Preston and Bolton and agonisingly missed out on a place in the SemiFinals after a loss to Wigan. The Girls from Carr Hill all represented FTFC with pride and showed an incredibly high standard of football throughout the tournament. A huge well done for getting this far. We will be on the look out for the next girls team to represent us in next year’s competition.
