Welcome to the State Theatre of North Carolina. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, allow me to echo what the Playhouse signs say:

“We have missed you!”

Still, it is my privilege to tell you how much we have appreciated your patronage and support of the Playhouse.  Obviously, things have been quite different from what we anticipated at the beginning of this year. We looked forward to a wonderful season of outstanding productions. Instead we got a year of “lockdowns,” a serious illness/pandemic, and uncertainty in all of our lives. The magic you and we had looked forward to on the Main Stage was not to be. Your outpouring of love and support has helped us carry on the “Vagabond Spirit” -- a Spirit that continues to energize all that we do to stay our course while we wait the opportunity to return to the stage. The professionals who appear on stage and work behind the scenes are eager to return and work hard to entertain you.  Along with them and you, we anxiously await our return to “live theatre.” We know that live theatre is where the magic comes from. Each performance is unique because it is being performed for you. We are proud to carry on the “Vagabond Spirit” that first infused the Playhouse theatre building more than sixty years ago.  Just because we have been required to shutter our wonderful old barn since March does not mean that we have abandoned that Vagabond Spirit. It is a contagious spirit, capturing young professionals and actors and apprentices who have crossed this stage, lived on this campus, and entertained you.  And, we believe that the Vagabond Spirit also captures you, our patrons and supporters. Please keep that spirit burning in your hearts. That very spirit is what leads Nat Zegree to perform virtually so that we may bring you his talent and love for Flat Rock Playhouse and for all of you. That same spirit allows the Playhouse and a cast, crew, and other support to develop a Flat Rock Christmas show for you to enjoy by way of streaming technology. No, it cannot and will not be the same as sitting in the theatre watching it and feeling the energy of the performers and your fellow audience members. But, it will have the same production quality that you have come to expect from the Playhouse. We will continue to explore ways to entertain you safely and professionally until you and we gather again in person in the theatre. As President of the Board I would be remiss if I did not also ask you to consider supporting this wonderful old theatre and the truly outstanding work performed here by making a charitable contribution to Flat Rock Playhouse.  As I am certain you appreciate, your donations, large or small, are especially needed during this difficult time. We truly need your continued monetary support so that we can continue to educate young aspiring thespians, return to providing exceptional productions for you, and ensuring that we will continue for another sixty-plus years to spread the infectious Vagabond Spirit in these beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.  That is the kind of “infectious pandemic” that we can all hope for. Thank you!!! Joe Ippolito President, Board of Trustees
