There’s no better time of year than the summer season. Early sunrises, longer days, adventuring, getting in touch with nature and splashing saltwater on your skin.

Spring Awakening

Let’s get motivated to move and fuel your body with the freshest organic produce, (hello, mango season!) and finding the time to check in with yourself and how far you’ve come this year. HYDRATE: Our bodies are made of 60% water, so it is essential to drink lots of it to keep hydrated, especially during hot days, consumption of alcohol, or exercising. Consider keeping a reusable water bottle on you at all times, so you always have a drink within reach when you need it. Enviro make a 2.2L BPA free water bottle, so it’s easy to get your daily requirement from just drinking 1 a day! Add a scoop of Nutra Organics Collagen Beauty Waterberry flavour to dissolve in your water for an added glow. SUNSCREEN: Give your morning routine an update by switching out makeup for a tinted sunscreen with broad spectrum protection. Small amounts of sun can still have an impact, so even if you’re just sitting in the warm sunshine for a brunch date - you’ll want to be covered. A wide brimmed hat & long sleeved shirt are a great idea if you’re out & about. MooGoo’s Natural SPF 40 Tinted Face Cream has natural moisturising oils for hydration, and minerals to add a natural tan coloured tint. What it doesn’t have are chemical UV filters, penetration enhancers, PEG’s or synthetic preservatives. Apply instead of makeup for an even skintone, or use the everyday SPF moisturiser to apply underneath your makeup so your face is protected. For longer periods in the sun, we recommend using a high SPF natural sunscreen all over your body, reapplying every 2-3 hours. Words: Ally McGrath

AFTER SUN CARE: The severity of the sun’s rays are more intense during the summer months. So, if you are caught out looking as red as a lobster, it’s vital to help repair your skin as soon as possible. Sunburnt skin will be in trauma mode for a few days as it tries to heal, so avoid any shaving or harsh treatments until it has recovered. Delivering natural hydration & balance. A healthy alternative to a sugary sports drink.

Start with a cold shower to relieve and soothe the skin, follow with Dr Organic Aloe Vera Gel and keep a cool washer on the burn to avoid painful swelling and stiffness. Hydration becomes even more important both topically & internally. Lather on the Aloe, drink plenty of H2O and supplement with magnesium, collagen, vitamins A & E. LIVER SUPPORT: Well, it is silly season after all! If you’re indulging in some Christmas champagne or New Year’s cocktails, your liver is going to take a hit. Your liver is one of the main systems in charge of breaking down or metabolising alcohol. Ideally, having a glass of water or soda water between each drink will help keep you hydrated so you’re less likely to have a killer headache tomorrow. When the fuzzy head has passed, do your liver a favour to help it get back on track with Herbs of Gold Liver Care supplement, with added milk thistle - a traditional medicine for liver function. It will also help to keep your digestive system in check. MIND & BODY: If your to-do list feels never ending & your mind is racing at bedtime, Herbs of Gold Mind Ease is packed with Ashwagandha to support nervous system function and a healthy stress response. Check your dietary intake, try not to load up on caffeine, eat your leafy greens, eliminate unnecessary sugar, go for long walks & supplement with healing herbs. Speak kindly to yourself, as the mind / body connection is incredibly strong. Whether you’ve had an incredible year or it’s been a mess - review any previous goals or priorities you’ve had and be open to change. Summer is 92 days of warm sun, checking in with loved ones and enjoying the outdoors. Sometimes it’s the simple things that make summer the best.

Just as Nature Intended. Naturally Sweet Coconut Water Delivering natural hydration & balance. A healthy alternative to a sugary sports drink.

Meet Rose of Rose’s Pawpaw

Lemon Springs, Lakelands, Northern QLD

Hi Rose, how long have you been farming? I’ve been farming for 22 years, and I also grow kaffir lime & passionfruit. Is Pawpaw grown in a particular season? Pawpaw actually grows all year ‘round! How do you manage any nasty bugs or pests? Healthy trees means no pests! Nature is always helping along our pest management such as relying on wasps to eat any spotted bugs landing on the pawpaw trees. Nature gives us these options to keep the pests away.

How long does it take to grow your organic Pawpaws? Pretty much a whole year, they are constantly flowering so there is always a lovely harvest, we replant our crops every 3-4 years. A healthy tree can live up to 5 years. How did your passion for organics grow? Well, I like to eat good food and not rubbish, she laughs. My passion for organics comes mainly from wanting to eat good food. In a previous life before farming I was a cook, so food has always played a big role in my life.

Pawpaw has powerful antioxidant effects, which may reduce oxidative stress, and may reduce signs of ageing! The papain enzyme can make protein easier to digest, & get those insides moving in the morning. Scoop out the seeds & add lemon zest or passionfruit.

The year is coming to an end (finally), with things winding down for the year and restrictions easing, you may feel like you’ve got a lot of catching up to do with friends and family. For many people this is the busiest and most stressful time of the year. So what ideas can we put in place to avoid losing ourselves? Get organised early, make lists and stick to them, prepare what you can in advance and be realistic with your time. Delegate the workload so that it’s not just one person doing the food preparation or gift purchasing. Take some time out for yourself: this is not always easy to do, but take a walk and clear your head, have a cuppa, take a bath or read a chapter of a book.

Breathe: That’s right, breathe! It would amaze you to know how often you are holding your breath. Take five minutes just to sit and focus on your breath. If you find that you need a little extra help to relax or find your happy place during the silly season, here are 4 of our favourite picks: 1. Superfeast Reishi – Reishi is a mushroom from traditional Chinese medicine, used to support the immune system, relieve stress, strengthen the spirit, calm the mind and promote peaceful sleep. 2. Luvin’ Life Magnesium Flakes – pop in the bath to have a nice long soak before bed. Helps to relax the mind, body & spirit - whilst relieving aching muscles. 3. English Tea Shop Happy Me Tea – this caffeine-free tea is infused with citrus, lemongrass, spicy ginger and Ceylon cinnamon for a natural cup of happiness. 4. Fusion Health B Complex Advanced – This multi-vitamin provides anti-stress effects to relieve nervous tension or mild anxiety and generate a relaxed state of mind.

I absolutely love the Icelandic tradition of giving books on Christmas Eve to read into the night; perhaps this is something to endeavor towards. A good night’s sleep boosts your immune system, improves mood and allows you to be more productive & focused. Adults should aim to get 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

this summer BY ADELLE RUTCH NUTRITIONIST - Maroochydore

We tend to think of hydration as being crucial (or perhaps we are only more conscious of it) during the summer months, this actually couldn’t be further from the truth! Whilst we do need to be mindful of dehydration in the heat, water is essential for life, all of the time. Start the good hydration habits now if you know you aren’t quite meeting the mark.

The human body can last for weeks without food, but without water? Only a few days. Our body is unable to store water and therefore we need to replenish daily. This is essential for bodily functions such as maintaining the health of every cell in the body, blood vessel integrity, elimination of waste, regulation of body temperature, moistening of mucous membranes, fluidity of joints, keeping badder and kidneys clear of bacteria, supporting digestion to prevent constipation, keeping skin well moisturised and carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells, amongst many other functions that all interplay with how we feel. The amount of water that we require really does differ from person to person based on your size, metabolism, the weather, food and other beverage consumed (e.g. diuretics such as coffee, caffeinated tea or alcohol), activity levels, whether you are travelling by aircraft frequently (particularly dehydrating!) and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Where 2 litres may be enough for one, it may not be enough for another, in fact, the 2 litres of water a day “guideline” probably isn’t enough for most! Adults often require 2.5-3L per day.

Quite often as a nutritionist, I am approached for support for niggling headaches, fatigue and/or constipation, sometimes it is the trifecta! These can quite often be signs of dehydration and it is quite remarkable what a slight change can do for a dehydrated individual in regards to improving their water intake and their symptoms subsiding.

Whilst increasing water can be challenging for some, try the following tips: - Leave a large BPA free, glass or stainless steel water bottle on your desk or kitchen counter as a constant reminder. - Our food can also count towards our hydration (approximately around 10% of), think watery food such as watermelon, lettuce, celery, and cucumber are good to include. - Keep your water fun! Check out the amazing herbal teas in store that can be enjoyed cold and make up a jug to keep in the fridge for when you feel like something a bit extra, taste-wise. - Download an app or set some alarms on your phone to remind you to sip whilst you are creating new habits. In cases of mild dehydration from a variety of causes, electrolytes may be necessary to explore. Electropops are a great way to support this and they taste great so are an option for the entire family. Or, a simple pinch of salt and the diced rind of a watermelon infused in water is also another way to gently add back electrolytes that may have been lost. You may also wish to speak to one of our knowledgeable instore nutritionists or naturopaths about a wide range of appropriate mineral supplementations to support your individual needs.

Life’s golden formula

Pawpaw is a phenomenal fruit pharmacy bursting with benefits for the gut, skin and cells. Nicknamed “the fruit of the angels” by explorer Christopher Columbus, pawpaw or papaya is a potent superfood prized for its health benefits. Papaya has been valued through history for constipation, digestive disorders, growths, worms, wound healing, dengue fever and pain. Dr. T.P. Lucas, founder of Brisbane’s Vera Pawpaw Hospital in 1911, treated patients solely with pawpaw remedies. It was also used to help heal Harrison Ford’s ruptured disc so he could continue filming Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, thanks to the antiinflammatory agent papain that pawpaw offers. So, what special substances in pawpaw make it amazingly medicinal? Bitter-Sweet Remedy Pawpaw provides plentiful enzymes, phytonutrients, fibre and anti-cancer constituents. Did you know an average pawpaw has over 300% of our recommended daily vitamin C? It also has abundant antioxidants vitamin A, E, carotenoids and lycopene – all of which contain anti-aging benefits. It’s not just the juicy flesh that’s powerful - pawpaw leaves and twigs are proving potentially promising for supportive cancer treatment due to their acetogenin content. Fermented pawpaw is also being studied for the health benefits. The bitter seeds are known to be powerful anti-parasitic agents and are taken as juice in India and Africa for this purpose. Seeds are also a rich source of vitamins A, C and E. Taken in moderation, the dried seeds can be used as a pepper substitute with their digestive proteolytic enzymes helping one digest protein.

Commercially - pawpaw’s milky juice is used as a chewing gum base, in toothpaste and meat tenderizers. Mellow Yellow Pawpaw offers calming properties, due to its alkaloid carpane which slows the heart rate and reduces blood pressure. The fruit has significantly high potassium, folate and fibre. Its fibre guards against high cholesterol and breaks down fibrin which can help to reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke. You can also find green pawpaw, which is a lovely tangy addition to salads can help your gut clear out any accumulated toxins. Tree of Life Pawpaw has endless applications. Juice and drink the amber elixir for help with arthritis, asthma, blood sugar balance, eyesight, digestion, heart health, immunity, skin and weight management. High in fibre and low in calories, pawpaw is a great fruit to snack on – especially if you’re watching your weight. Loaded with digestive enzymes, it will soothe the stomach and boost protein digestion. Add a cup of ripe pawpaw to your smoothie and absorb its natural vitamin C and antioxidants lycopene, lutein, zeaxanthin, and cryptoxanthins to promote collagen and clear complexion, while protecting from free radical degeneration. Externally, the fruit latex can help heal scars and the inner skin juice is a natural exfoliator due to its enzyme papain. Therefore, you will find pawpaw used topically in some great skincare products such as brightening masks, to help with acne, eczema and pigmentation. The ointment is also a well-known and effective balm for chapped lips. Pawpaw isn’t advised for those who are pregnant, trying to conceive or allergic to latex. Pawpaw seeds should only be taken in moderation by adults. Please consult your healthcare provider before using pawpaw therapeutically or speak to the Naturopath in store to see if it’s right for your individual needs.

Putting the ‘gevity’ in ‘longevity. We speak with team Gevity Rx. Everything Gevity Rx founders, Mark and Atlanta Fowler have created has come from their desire to pass on all they have learned from their own personal health mission.

“Increasing your longevity is at the core of every product we create” - and they mean it. Their mission is simple: to create life-changing health products without the misleading labels, fluff and empty claims. Since 2015, Gevity Rx (formerly Meadow & Marrow) has gone from strength to strength thanks to the inner fuel generated from having to overcome Atlanta’s own gut health challenges. Their discovery that only certain key nutrients from the bones heal the gut, led to the development of

Gevity Rx

what is now their closely guarded PPP (Proprietary Purification Process) & a world-first bone broth with unmatched nutrient density. This process is their secret recipe in creating an incredible nutrient dense, highly bioavailable concentrate with 10 x more collagen based amino acids & healthy fats per gram compared to traditional broths. And literally nothing else. No meat, no veg, no fillers, just gut healing goodness. They’re also unapologetically gluten, dairy and sugar-free, meaning more people can enjoy the undeniable health benefits of Gevity Rx products. The sticky bone broth goo Atlanta & Mark created to restore her gut health, became affectionately termed “Atlanta’s Body Glue™”. “We really feel like there is no better name that is both authentic and descriptive. The binding capacity is so strong that it literally looks like glue

whilst working like glue in the body to repair, bind and regenerate.”

Often our gut lining needs to be ‘repaired’ if we’ve loaded excess stress, sugar & irritants into our system.

Gevity Rx is proudly made on the Gold Coast, Queensland – so they are very much a local company. Proudly Australian Made, the team are committed to sourcing the highest quality ingredients from around Australia. Including 100% grass-fed and finished bones from the Darling Downs region, in South East Queensland.

With 70% of our immune system residing in our gut, it’s important we take care of it.

As a concentrate, the Gevity Rx formulation allows for ultimate nutrient absorption, making it one of the most effective broths on the market. What will Bone Broth Body Glue™ do for me? Poor gut health can manifest in many ways, from external / internal inflammation, lack of nutrient absorption from your food, lowered immune responses, sleep disturbances, mood swings, foggy concentration, lethargy, irritability, and upset digestion over long periods of time.

So, Body Glue™ really is an apt name for the healing powers of Gevity Bone Broth products. If you’re looking to improve your skin & joint health – collagen is great place to start. Bone broth is naturally filled with collagen! Over time, our body’s collagen production naturally slows down, so it’s important to increase your consumption of collagen rich foods to help hydrate & repair skin & connective tissue health. Gevity Rx Bone Broth Body Glue™ is a fantastic range for the whole family.

TO YOUR SKIN Daniela Sivevski NATUROPATH - Benowa Founder of Allira Skincare Your skin is a great reflection of your internal organs and dietary choices. For healthier, hydrated and glowing skin cells, it’s important that we make conscious choices around nutrition that fuels our body & mind. Noting if there are any dietary choices that are triggering an intolerance. Ancient eastern medicine practitioners have opened the gateway to understanding the link between facial breakouts, issues, pigmentation and your organs. Our internal organs decided a long time ago, the best way to capture our attention was to make their way to our skin & facial areas. Reflection of: nervous system, bladder and intestines. Deep horizontal lines, redness or acne in this area could be signs of excess stress. Which in turn can link to poor gut health & digestion. Ensure you up your water intake, lessen the caffeine & watch how much sugar you are consuming on a daily basis. Make good sleep a priority and utilise supplements to help your digestive system. Premedy Probiotics can help rebalance a healthy gut bacterium, which in turn provides digestive system support. Your gut & your nervous system are connected, so looking after one can help the other. Fusion Stress And Anxiety could help rebalance the mind, nervous indigestion & sleep. Also remember to have some fun - and eat the rainbow!

2. Temples, eyebrows & under eyes

Reflection of: kidneys, adrenals and bladder Overexertion, stress, fear and overthinking equals dark circles, puffiness under the eyes and possibly acne.

Look to combat these issues by doing activities which light you up and bring you energy. Nature also provides us with herbs which can support you – such as shisandra berry, raspberry, goji berry, parsley, fresh or as a tea, rosehip gotu kola, dandelion and celery. Supplements that offer Kidney & adrenal support are recommended such as Fusion Kidney Tonic or Superfeast Jing Mushroom tonic.

3. Area between the eyebrows

Reflection of: an imbalance in the liver Deep lines, acne, heat or skin discolouration can mean that your liver is struggling to cope. Overindulgence will push it out of harmony, so try practices such as meditation & yoga. Plus increase your leafy greens & alkalising foods intake, and limit caffeine, alcohol & sugar. Nutralife Greens & Reds Powder is an easy way to power up nutritional goodness.

4. Nose

Reflection of: your heart Blackheads, redness, broken capillaries and inflammation can all be linked back to poor circulation, blood pressure and blood sugar issues. To help balance the heart, increase your consumption of calcium rich foods to strengthen and calm nerves. Oily fish such as sardines, anchovies, as well as leafy greens & tahini work to cool the body. Herbal teas such as chamomile, valerian, passionflower and skullcap are also recommended.

5. Mouth, chin and jawline

Reflection of: colon, stomach and endocrine system. Digestive and hormonal issues often arise as problematic skin conditions in this area. Breakouts can be explained by food intolerances, oral health, spicy foods and even external reactions from certain toothpaste and lipsticks. While raw foods can be a good diet inclusion, too much can lead to poor digestion. Make sure you are balancing with lightly steamed vegetables and other cooked whole foods to assist with digestive fire. Pineapple, ginger and pawpaw, are also great aids for healthy digestion.

We also recommend evening primrose oil for hormonal acne. You can also try and look to herbs and nutrients such as marshmallow root, slippery elm, aloe vera, B Vitamins and Glutamine. Ethical Nutrients Super B Daily Stress+ can help minimise stress responses in this area.

6. Cheeks

Reflection of: stomach, spleen and lungs Redness, acne, inflammation in this area could mean your stomach is a little out of sorts. Dairy, caffeine, salt, citrus and sugar are all main contenders for upsetting your stomach, spleen and lungs.

Your cheeks can also be high traffic area for bacteria build up from make-up, mobile phones and dirty pillowcases. We suggest a good topical cream, combined with assessing your current diet to eliminate possible causes, such as eating low histamine producing foods.

I would recommend Nutralife Gut Relief to help smooth the intestinal / gut lining and rebalance the gut with prebiotics, nutrients & plant extracts.

Inflammation is a great tell-tale sign that there is a disturbance internally or an external reaction to what we put on our skin. So, it’s important we take note of what our body is communicating to us daily & tune in to the needs it could be asking of us. Treating inflammation can start with the addition of foods or supplements high in Betacarotene or Vitamin A. Up your Essential Fatty Acid intake with Nordic Naturals Complete Omega and introduce detoxifying herbs, such as echinacea, burdock, dandelion, celery, parsley and sarsaparilla. Topically – make sure to use clean products with not too many ingredients, avoiding drying ingredients like alcohol and ethanol in skincare. My personal little skincare secret …. a “gua sha” massage tool does wonders for our skin.

Gemtree Wines

Whether you love a drop or not – the world of organic viniculture is fascinating. Living in Australia, we are pretty lucky to have some of the best wine growing regions close to home, with passionate wine makers that explore emerging techniques whilst retaining traditions passed on by their families. So, just like our passion for organic fruit & veg – we have done our homework on a few vineyards doing incredible things with grapes. We’re now bringing our favourites to you in-store. Reading labels is our thing, so here are a few pointers we look for: Certified Organic Just like the products in store, organic wines are grown without the use of synthetic chemicals, fertilisers,

Yalumba pesticides, fungicides & herbicides. The vineyards themselves must continually go through this certification, to ensure that the soil, air, waterways and crops are not polluted. It’s the same as growing fruit & veg – where nature leads the way, and soil as well as vine health are paramount. Look for the Certification on the label, then you can be sure they are the real deal. Australian Certified Organic (ACO), the National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australia (NASAA) or EU Certifications are a good place to start.

Biodynamic If you’re not already familiar with this standard – it is a pretty exceptional process a farmer aligns with. Biodynamics embodies the same foundations of organics, excluding the use of all synthetic chemical fertilisers etc. But – it goes one step further...

In biodynamic wine, the vineyard is treated as a single ecosystem, encouraging the regeneration of micro-organisms in the soil. Founded in 1924 by Austrian philosopher & scientist Rudolf Steiner, as a holistic approach to agriculture as well as homeopathic methods to look after the soil health. He taught a Biodynamic farming system where the health of the soil is of the upmost importance – healthy soil, healthy plants, healthy earth, healthy body, healthy eco system. … simply the way nature intended. It embodies farm life, from soil, plants, animal life & eco system factors such as rain & water resources. Then there is the moon …. Biodynamic farming also considers lunar cycles to determine the best time to plant, prune, harvest & irrigate. Just as the moon causes the tides to rise it also affects the way our plants grow & produce fruit. Organic and Biodynamic practices in the vineyard and winery ensure the soil, air and surrounding waterways are not polluted with synthetic chemicals and fertilisers. Instead, growers use natural yeasts to ferment, allowing each wine to be genuinely unique and truly representing the time (vintage) and place (soil/ location) where it is grown. Again – look for the certification on the label (yes – you must be certified to be officially Biodynamic) or we can help you find these options in store. Our picks: Kalleske Wines for their crisp Barossa Valley Rose or Gemtree Bloodstone Shiraz (low in preservatives as well!) Vegan Wines It may come as a surprise to a few ... but not all wine is actually ‘vegan friendly’.

Our range of vegan wine is extensive with great wine makers such as Spring Seeds, Farmhand, Yalumba, Earth Mother & Kalleske. What about preservatives? Organic / Biodynamic wine is not necessarily free from either of these, so please check the labels for preservative 220 (sulphur dioxide). If you’re concerned about sulphites then this is the one you must check, as it can interfere with certain allergies or those with asthma. By choosing Certified Organic or Biodynamic you will either find wine that is either sulphite free or with a very minimal dose. Certification requires sulphite levels to be under 120ppm (most wines allow for a maximum of 250ppm). While alcohol is a natural preservative, most wine producers still need a little extra help to preserve their goods from oxidation & spoilage by using sulphur dioxide, which has been used for thousands of years. Gemtree Wines are proudly Certified Organic, Biodynamic, Vegan & Preservative free. Non-Alcoholic Options If you’re pregnant or after the low or non-alcohol varieties, we’ve also got you covered this summer. With a huge selection of kombucha & kefir drinks as well as plenty of sparkling grape juice (without the kick) or fruit juices. For something fancier, give Monday Distillery drinks a whirl at your next BBQ with their range of non-alcoholic G & T’s as well as Osun Sparkling Waters such as lavender, jasmine or rose infused tonics. These are great to have on hand to make any guest feel incredibly welcome.

While the grapes and growing methods are fine, it’s during the processing method called ‘fining’ where certain processing aids are used to help remove / draw out any impurities accumulated in the fermentation process, essentially finishing the product off before it’s bottled. Traditionally, wine makers use fining aids such as egg whites (albumin), milk (casein) and animal proteins (gelatine) to remove the cloudy haze before the crisp clean wine is bottled. Vegan producers on the other hand use techniques with carbon, bentonite clay & limestone to draw out any impure particles, pulling them down to the bottom of the wine tanks. Some producers even prefer not to filter or ‘fine’ their wine at all, leaving the wine cloudy. If it’s not clearly stated ‘Vegan’ on the label, look for the ‘may contain traces of animal products’ statement as a safe guide.

A new world by Sarah Louise Spiritual Guide & Light Worker

2020 was always going to be a wild one and it was! Entering a new decade is an incredible process with multiple stages. Sometimes there is fear to face and a lot of surrendering to do. We must trust both the natural process and our instincts. Life, growth, love, pain, joy, excitement, death - the emotions do not get more extreme than we saw in this past year. 2020 gave birth not only to new decade, but to a whole new world and a new age.

On December 21st, 2020 she is born under a great planetary conjunction. Welcome the new world, the age of Aquarius. 2021 this first year of new life is rather delicate to begin with. However, those who prepared last year and went ok through the 2020 changes will have an easier time. My advice this coming year - time at home, resting & eating well. Walking in nature and meditating. Adapting to new ways and new routines with grace. Accepting change is a real bonus and taking each day as it comes eases the anxiety. Find the beauty in each day and remember the magic moments. This is the year to build real security around you. Connect with your community. Think globally but act locally. Work on your relationships. Think bigger than I, remember this is a ‘We’ world now. Act as a humanitarian. Many changes will occur this year at a rapid pace, stay grounded, and look after yourself and please ‌find time to stop and smell the roses.
