INTERIOR DESIGN

Jacques Grange Recent Work Pierre Passebon Photography by François Halard Twenty new projects by master Parisian interior designer Jacques Grange redefine his visionary talent. Over the course of his fifty-year career, Jacques Grange has designed homes for the world’s most respected collectors, artists, designers, and tastemakers, including Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, François Pinault, Robert Agostinelli, Valentino, Israel Englander, Stavros Niarchos, Terry and Jean de Gunzburg, Lauren and Andres Santo Domingo, Aerin Lauder, Per Skarstedt, and HRH the Princess of Hanover. His classical training at Paris’s École Boulle and École Camondo, his early experience with the French design legend Henri Samuel, and his passion for contemporary art have resulted in a uniquely discerning approach to interior design that has lasting appeal. Grange’s seemingly natural, “non-designed” aesthetic—at once simple and sophisticated, lavish and comfortable—is revealed through his unusual way of grouping objects, masterful combinations of materials and colors, and an unparalleled sense of style and attention to detail.   This essential volume illustrates Grange’s wide-ranging inspirations and exquisite taste through twenty new residential projects in Europe and America, from a luxury hôtel particulier in Paris to a chic beachside cabana in Comporta, Portugal, and a mid-century modern house in Los Angeles. Texts and interviews by Parisian gallerist Pierre Passebon delineate Grange’s approach to design and decoration, and provide insight into the evolution of taste in collecting and decorating. All-new, previously unpublished photography by François Halard captures these singular projects with profound sensibility. Pierre Passebon is a collector and founder of the Galerie du Passage in Paris. François Halard, a preeminent photographer of interiors and architecture, has published many books and regularly contributes to Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ, and House & Garden.

Héloïse Brion’s early life was rhythmed by mealtimes—from her childhood in Florida, where her mother proudly upheld the tradition of the French family dinner, to summers spent in the Pyrenees where her grandmother cooked over a wood-fire oven. Her passion for food—always respectful of the seasons and the origins of her products—followed her back to France where she pursued a career in fashion.   What initially began as a whimsical pastime turned into Miss Maggie’s Kitchen, her brand that blends cooking, travel, and lifestyle in a perfect alchemy. Her innate talent for style and entertaining stems from her informal American approach to life mixed with her inherent French flair. Here, Brion shares more than eighty laid-back recipes for every occasion, including her beautiful table settings that are festive and welcoming. Her simple, authentic, and tasty cuisine includes winter squash soup with porcini crostini, cherry tomato pizza, veal stew, clementine and pistachio cake, and a rosemary-rhubarb cooler. Brion’s husband, photographer Christophe Roué, captures the charm of Miss Maggie’s Kitchen where retro and modern culminate in the ultimate comfortable elegance. Héloïse Brion worked for fifteen years in the fashion industry before deciding to pursue her passion for cooking. Since 2017, she has published quarterly recipe journals, contributed recipes to Elle à Table, worked in catering, and held cooking classes at venues like French in Calabasas, California and at My Little Paris in France. She sells themed lifestyle boxes and travel souvenirs from the Miss Maggie’s Kitchen website. Christophe Roué is a portrait, fashion, and lifestyle photographer and a film director.

Martina Mondadori When Martina Mondadori entertains at her London home, nothing is starchy or overdone, and sophistication comes with a light touch. Her style—a mix and match of beautiful fabrics, carefully chosen objects, and guests who complement each other—creates an ambience that is invariably lively. A light and gentle breeze seems to waft through the townhouse in which Martina Mondadori lives in leafy South Kensington. The choice of natural materials, with the emphasis on straw, bamboo, and wood, together with the color palette of the walls—essentially warm and enveloping shades of terra-cotta—creates a living environment in which a love of beauty never veers into pretentiousness, quite the opposite: “I like things that are beautiful but also practical, as I have three young children,” she says candidly.

Flammarion Flammarion

A descendant of the legendary Italian publishing and media dynasty, Martina Mondadori grew up in Milan in an apartment decorated by Renzo Mongiardino, with her mother, a daughter of the Zanussi industrial powerhouse, and her father, a collector of eclectic tastes. A pedigree that led to the founding of her magazine Cabana in 2014. This twice-yearly lifestyle publication, somewhere between a magazine and a book, with its distinctive fabric covers and articles constructed around multiple images, has become a reference bible for interior designers and an online label selling lifestyle collections. Each issue is imbued with her love of elegant accumulation. At home, this delight in the decorative is expressed especially through the fabrics—vintage or contemporary, from Central Asia or India, floral or embroidered, but always rich with color—that she uses to cover chairs, beds, and tables. She always arranges place mats on her printed cotton cloths, then picks the plates that best express her mood that day. Recently she has drawn inspiration from antique Transylvanian ceramics—one of her passions—to have a limited edition made by hand in England. More touches of color come from the glasses, mostly from Murano. She avoids tall candlesticks and flower arrangements because “they would obstruct the guests’ view of each other,” but adds notes of cheerful spontaneity with posies of wild flowers and woodblockprinted napkins. Although she loves to cook, Martina rarely has the time, so she makes it a rule to prepare dishes that are simple and light, using ingredients bought from local suppliers: sometimes quiches, but mostly—given her Italian origins—the obligatory pasta.

FACING PAGE In her London dining room, Martina Mondadori displays her gift for creating mixes in a color palette that evokes her native Italy.

Dior in Bloom Justine Picardie, Alain Stella, Jérôme Hanover, and Naomi Sachs With photography by Nick Knight Celebrating Dior’s floral inspirations in fashion and perfume, this unique volume features a portfolio of rose portraits by acclaimed fashion photographer Nick Knight. For Christian Dior, perfume was “a door opening into a hidden world.” His first, Miss Dior, inspired by the lush gardens of his childhood home in Normandy, forged an inextricable link between his fashion and fragrance creations. Other scents were inspired by evenings in southern France, lit with fireflies and scented with jasmine. The rose bowers of his family home in Granville; his old mill country house; and the Château de la Colle Noire near Grasse—where jasmine, tuberose, and May roses reign supreme and are still cultivated—inspired Dior’s most memorable creations.   Flowers were also at the heart of Dior’s fashion, from the women-flowers that inspired the late 1940s New Look to the swishing, blossom-like ball gowns embroidered with lavish floral motifs. They have inspired all of the designers who followed him at the House of Dior, from Yves Saint Laurent to John Galliano, and Raf Simons to Maria Grazia Chiuri.   This extraordinary volume blooms with color and inspiration, and includes rose portraits by Nick Knight, previously unpublished archival documents, exquisite details of embroidery and fabrics, perfumes, fashion sketches, and sublime fashion photographs. Acclaimed novelist, fashion writer, and biographer Justine Picardie is the former editor in chief of Harper’s Bazaar and Town & Country. Alain Stella has written numerous books. Jérôme Hanover has written several books on Dior. Naomi Sachs, a therapeutic landscape designer, has published and presented internationally on the positive role of nature in human health and well-being. Influential, visionary photographer Nick Knight is known for his numerous contributions to Vogue and his fashion advertising campaigns.

ILLUSTRATED HISTORY / WOMEN’S STUDIES

The Trouble with Women in Power Leaders Who Dared to Change the World Dominique Gaulme This work presents more than eighty women who, in the face of significant obstacles, courageously changed the world. From Cleopatra to Angela Merkel, Harriet Tubman to Eva Peron, and Empress Dowager Cixi to Joan of Arc, this book focuses on powerful women who changed the course of history across the centuries and around the globe.   Leaders of military operations, activists for social change, iron-fisted rulers, or the voice of the people, these strongwilled women continue to fascinate and inspire. From the warrior Queen Nzinga and her Amazonian guards to Native American health advocate Wilma Pearl Mankiller, or from the androgynous Sultan Razia to the daring Virgin Queen Elisabeth I, these complex women engraved their names into the chronicles of history. The text—richly illustrated by portraits, photographs, and mythical scenes—recounts their stories, reframes how they have been represented and remembered, and highlights the attributes of their power.   Few women leaders have gained and retained places of power throughout history. In order to overcome misogyny, archaic laws governing inheritance, and the constraints of religious fervor, the women featured here incarnate exceptional determination and strength of character. Revered and reviled in equal measure, their stories—often riveting tales of courage in the face of injustice—offer an alternate perspective on the traditional histories of courage, vision, and leadership. Journalist Dominique Gaulme co-authored Power and Style: A World History of Politics and Dress (Flammarion, 2013).

The Prince of Romanée-Conti Laurens Delpech With exclusive insight from the owners of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, this monograph traces the fascinating history of their prestigious Burgundy vineyards and rare wines. Romanée-Conti, the world’s finest and rarest pinot noir Grand Cru, hails from the gently-sloped vineyards of Burgundy’s Côtes de Nuits. The story of this unique vineyard dates back some 1500 years and is inextricably tied to its UNESCO world heritage Climat (the ideal position and soil conditions that grace its location) combined with annual weather conditions. Together, they significantly define the character of a given vintage. The saga of successive vintages recounted here—and illuminated through co-owner Aubert de Villaine’s detailed harvest reports since 1996—bears witness to the vigilance and thoughtful decision-making throughout the growing cycle and harvest season that is necessary to ensure that the vines produce the finest grapes.   This engaging monograph traces the history of winemaking on the site and pays homage to the colorful Prince de Conti who added—in addition to his name— fame and prestige to the wine’s already celebrated reputation. This volume offers new insight into this exceptional, cult wine. Laurens Delpech is an international wine trade executive and author of several books on wine.

French fold cloth jacket over paperback, four paper stocks, 24 vignettes, 8 postcards, 3 ribbon page markers 620 pages 400 color and b&w illustrations 10 × 12 ¼ in. (25 × 31 cm) ISBN: 978-2-08-020420-2 US $175 / Can. $235 / £125 / 150 € Publication: November 2020

Over the past 150 years, six generations of the Rothschild family have attended to the winemaking tradition, developing Château Lafite’s reputation and transforming this classified Premier Grand Cru into a benchmark for fine wine in Bordeaux. Discover how this occurred and what actually lies behind Lafite’s label through stories from the tightly-knit team of men and women who tend to Lafite wines.   A chronology introducing the past150 vintages includes informative tasting notes, meteorological aspects, and the grape blends that mark each vintage. An archival gem has been unearthed for each year: from the harvesters’ menu in 1922 to portraits by master photographers like Robert Doisneau, Richard Avedon, and Paolo Roversi. A fold-out original illustration by M/M Paris tracing the winemaker’s month-by-month activity from vine to wine.   The Lafite story—illustrated here with historical documents, press clippings, and photographs—combines deep respect for tradition with a commitment to evolve with the times, protecting Lafite’s singular, vibrant, and evolving legacy for the next 150 years. Saskia de Rothschild is Château Lafite’s sixth-generation winemaker, a writer, and a former journalist for The International New York Times. Baron Éric de Rothschild managed the estate from 1974–2018, overseeing important technical advancements and vineyard renewal.
