WelCoMe to FlagstaFF! The Flagstaff Region covers nearly one million acres, and has an extremely rich and diverse landscape. About 87 per cent of the Region’s land is under agriculture production. Gone are the traffic jams, smog, and many pressures associated with urban life. These are replaced by clean, fresh scent of newly cut hay, the deep rumble of a passing train, or the ability to breathe deep and see the vast blue sky.

HistoRy History Timeline: •

• • •

Over the last century, the name and municipal boundaries of Flagstaff Region have shifted numerous times. The Municipal District of Flagstaff was first incorporated in December of 1912, with the first Council meeting held in January 1913 in the Village of Lougheed. In 1943, the Minister of Municipal Affairs issued an order that saw the formation of the enlarged Municipal District of Killam, whose name was changed back to Flagstaff the following year. The Municipal District of Flagstaff became the County of Flagstaff No. 29 in 1968, and in 1998 the County underwent its final formation, dropping its numeric appendage and becoming simply Flagstaff County.

• •

1754 – Anthony Henday is the first explorer to pass through this region in the fall of 1754. He crossed over Flagstaff Hill and continued to follow the Battle River west. 1858 – Palliser Expedition crossed the Battle River and proceeded to the landmark known as “Treaty Hill”. Palliser would later describe this part of the West as uninhabitable and questioned the productivity of the land. Late 1800s – Canadian Government begins an aggressive campaign to attract farmers to Western Canada. 1898-1910 – Majority of the settlers that came to the Flagstaff Region arrived between 1898–1910. 1912 – Rural Municipal Districts were incorporated by special charter, and on December 9, 1912 the Rural Municipality of Flagstaff 394 was formed. 1914 – October 29, R.M. of Flagstaff No. 394 was renumbered to No. 364 1944 – January 1, the Municipal District of Killam was formed by merger of the Rural Municipalities of Flagstaff No. 364, Asquith No. 394, Wheatland No. 395, Kinsella No. 424, and Sterling No. 425. 1998 – January 28, County of Flagstaff No. 29 renamed Flagstaff County.

The Battle River borders the southern portion of the Region. The River eventually winds its way to the northeast, passing by beautiful country which provides for tall hills that have been used as landmarks ever since the first inhabitants. The tallest point is known as Treaty Hill. The Cree had named it “Flag Hanging Hill”, which is the origin of the current name “Flagstaff.” Legend has it that Treaty Hill was a gathering place for the First Nation. And that this was where Bishop Grandin met the Blackfoot and Cree, and forged peace between them. The Flagstaff Region was also home to the Iron Creek Meteorite, known as “Manitou Stone.” This meteorite was located on a hilltop near Iron Creek. Early explorers noted that the meteorite had great significance for Natives in the region. The meteorite was removed sometime prior to 1869 by Methodist missionaries, and placed at the Fort Victoria Mission. In the 1880s, the Manitou Stone was removed to Victoria University and then it was moved to the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. It is now housed in the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton. The Flagstaff Region has an extremely rich and diverse landscape which is characterized by level to gently undulating topography throughout the majority of the municipality which provides high potential for many outdoor recreation pursuits. 6

Did You Know? The urban communities formed along the rail lines and were established so the furthest outlying farms could easily transport their grain with horse drawn wagon to the rail depot and return home in a day. The Flagstaff Region

CoMMunities in FlagstaFF The Flagstaff Region has become known as the “Community of communities” for the ten urban communities that help create this Region. Here is a snapshot of the ten urban communities of the Flagstaff Region. Alliance is a quaint, yet vibrant, community that perches atop the hills near the scenic Battle River Valley, situated just off Highway 36 on Secondary Highway 602. This community has a longstanding economic base in agriculture and is a major rail shipping point for grain to world markets. Since the early 1990s, the energy industry has added substantially to the area's economic diversity.

Village of Alliance www.villageofalliance.ca

Alliance is central to a vast array of wild animals, birds, and natural scenery. This picturesque community is ideal for families, retirees, artists, and tourists. Enjoy the parks, heritage trees, and buildings, large sports grounds with camping area, and walking paths. In the winter, enjoy skiing or snowboarding at the nearby Valley Ski Hill or skate in the arena. The Village is the starting point of the Battle River Railway, which offers train rides in vintage passenger car throughout the year. Alliance boasts numerous businesses on Main Street that provide products and services to the community and area. Should you be interested in relocating to Alliance there are residential lots available for development. Contact the Village office for more information, 780-879-3911.

Galahad represents the Village of Galahad grace and beauty of Alberta’s www.villageofgalahad.ca heartland. In 1905, the rich farmland of the area around the Village of Forestburg was settled by British, Scandinavian, and German homesteaders. Forestburg is located approximately 80 km southeast of Camrose, at the junction of Highway 53 and Secondary Highway 856. The scenic Battle River Valley is only 20 km south and offers both a unique natural setting and varied recreational opportunities. Coal mining has been a part of the area almost as long as agriculture. Today agriculture, coal mining, oil and gas, and power generation form the basis of Forestburg's economy.

Village of Forestburg www.forestburg.ca

This community of approximately 880 people shows true “pride of ownership”. Small town values of caring and working together abound (no small town could exist without the many volunteers!) Forestburg has been an active member of both the National and Provincial Communities in Bloom program and has received national awards for their size category in 1999 and again in 2010. They have also received numerous awards at the Provincial level and have also been recognized at the International level. In recent years, new homes have been built in their west subdivision, and industrial shops started. Proximity to Highways 53, 13, and 36 provides excellent transportation routes. Forestburg Public School offers an excellent curriculum for Grades K-12. The Village has excellent recreation facilities including a multi-purpose

arena, outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, ball diamonds, soccer fields, an indoor riding arena, and a 9-hole golf course. There are residential lots available in the Village. Contact the Village office for more information, 780-582-3668. The Village of Heisler is Village of Heisler named after Martin Heisler www.villageofheisler.ca Sr., a pioneer who settled here and then provided the land for the new community. Heisler has a lot to offer its residents, including an Alberta Treasury Branch Agency, the Cozy Corner Seniors Residence, Canada Post, a Catholic Church, Seniors Centre, a hotel B&B, a general store with butcher shop, two garages with mechanics, a welding shop, a library, village office, public works building, and a volunteer fire department. Heisler is very famous for its love of baseball. In June 2007 the community decided to commemorate the sport and the individuals who have carried on in making Heisler a strong baseball community. A local artist designed and built the largest baseball glove in Canada. It was placed adjacent to the baseball fields. At the sports grounds, located in Irene Parlby Park, there is a large concession booth with kitchen facilities which is available to rent, a great playground, washroom facilities, and ten serviced camp sites. The Recreation Centre has a skating rink, four lanes of 5-pin bowling including neon bowling, several rooms for community groups to meet that are available to rent, and a fenced basketball court. Heisler is very proud of their Community Centre which is available for rent for a variety of events. Heisler has several residential, commercial, and industrial lots for sale. It is a great place to set up shop and put down roots. Contact the Village office for more information, 780-889-3774.

The Village of Lougheed was Village of Lougheed incorporated in 1911. The www.villageoflougheed.com community is located on the south side of Highway 13 and aligns with the Canadian Pacific Rail Line. Lougheed is home to numerous businesses that provide products and services to the community and area including Haus Falkenstein at Lougheed Hotel which offers the largest choice of fresh pan-fried Schnitzel commercially available in the world. With a population of approximately 273 and growing, this vibrant village is awaiting you to come and visit or establish a business of choice.

For residents and visitors alike, the Village has something to offer in all seasons. The community is proud of the camping and picnic locations, trout pond, horseshoe pits, model air craft field, museum, and four baseball diamonds. During the winter, the “hub of activity" is at the arena and curling rink “home of Olympic Champion” – Kevin Martin. In the summer, you can enjoy playing horseshoes, ball (ladies, men’s, mixed, and minor). The Lougheed Agricultural Society has successfully hosted their Annual Fair in August for over 60 years. This Fair consists of a bench show, horse show, cattle show, and activities for everyone to partake in. Over the years, community volunteers and groups have rallied to offer programs and events to attract people of all ages. The Lougheed Community Hall offers a place to book your wedding, meeting, family reunion, or funeral. The Lougheed Community Society Board also offers dance lessons, yoga lessons, fall suppers, and other special occasion events for you and your family to enjoy. The arena, known as the Lougheed Field House, has a gym, and it is used year round for various indoor sports and events.

In 1904, settlers began to Village of Strome flock to the Strome area from www.villageofstrome.com around the world, enticed by the prospect of ‘free’ land. Strome became the hub of the wheel, with spokes leading out to the surrounding district. Strome is a small but active community situated on Highway 13 that provides services to the Village residents and the rural residents in the large surrounding farming area. Excellent recreational facilities in Strome include a curling rink, outdoor skating rink, ball diamonds, a playground, and a Community Hall. These facilities are available for use for a variety of functions and events for groups and families alike. The Strome Drop-In Centre on Main Street is a favourite seniors' meeting place, and is well utilized for celebrations, card parties, floor curling, lunches, and pot-luck gatherings. When visiting Strome, you are encouraged to make time to stop in at the Sodbusters Archives Museum to "relive the memories." During the summer months, the museum runs a Kids Program to introduce youth to history in a fun and interactive way. Thanks to the residents and their pioneer spirit, it is one of the best museums in the area. Just north of the Village is Wavy Lake, a favourite feeding stop for geese and ducks and a choice area for hunters in the fall. If you are looking to relocate, consider Strome. Residential lots are available for development; contact the Village office for more information, 780-376-3558.

Lougheed is home to the largest population of 'Mexican Mennonites’ in the Flagstaff Region. To accommodate this population as they deal with their new Canadian home, the citizens of Lougheed have initiated events and enterprises to ensure a smooth transition to their new chosen home. Lougheed has room to grow. They have both residential and commercial lots available for development. Visit the Village website to find out more. Or you may be interested in purchasing an existing business, or relocating to commercial buildings available here. Incorporated as a village in 1907, Sedgewick continued to grow and by 1910 was a bustling, modern municipality of over 300 residents. Many of the descendents of these early settlers still call Sedgewick home. In 1966, Sedgewick gained town status. While Sedgewick remains agriculturally based, the oil and gas sector activity in Alberta has impacted the community as it has the rest of the province. Oil and gas production and service contribute significantly to Sedgewick's economy. The town is one of several municipalities in the province to operate its own natural gas service (operated jointly with the Town of Killam). This foresight has provided the residents of the community with inexpensive natural gas rates.

Central High Sedgewick Public School is an integral part of the community offering Grades 1-12 with a private Kindergarten classroom neatly adjoined. Sedgewick continues to grow. On the horizon, a new 35-lot residential subdivision is being planned. Sedgewick is open for business and ready to help you make a new home in their community. Contact the Town office for more information, 780-384-3504.

Recreation plays a big part in the lifestyle of the area. The town boasts a large recreational facility, housing hockey and curling rinks, bowling alley, lacrosse surface, and library as well as ball diamonds, a football field, and a racetrack. Together with the Sedgewick Golf Course, these facilities make Sedgewick a popular sports destination. Sedgewick Lake Park is a popular camping, picnicking, and bird watching destination. The Park has 59 well-manicured sites and an outdoor wading pool. The upcoming spray park will be a nice addition. Their paved trail system is a great added feature connecting recreation opportunities. Along with recreation, arts and culture is flourishing. They have an active theatre group as well and a vibrant art club. Sedgewick Main Street Park highlights the history and future as the town continues to hold music in the park and other community events here.
