Miracle League: A Home Run for Inclusive Recreation For many of us, finding the time to fit in exercise into our busy lives is difficult. In the end though, all we need to do is head to our nearest gym. Now, imagine living with a disability—one that impairs your mobility. You may not be able to make it to the gym or exercise in a traditional setting at all. Your access to one of life’s basic needs is severely restricted. Recognizing this, the Florida Disabled Outdoors Association (FDOA) worked hand-in-hand with the City of Tallahassee and local Kiwanis clubs to found the Miracle Sports program, which offers an inclusive setting for those with disabilities to get out and exercise. Each year, the Miracle Sports program holds three seasons of sports: Baseball, Kickball, and Tennis. Members meet weekly at Miracle Field in Tallahassee. After some stretches, participants group up into teams. Volunteers ensure that the teams are balanced by filling in spots and assisting team members whenever they may need help. When play begins, the focus is not on competition; there are no outs, and there is no score. The focal point of the activity is recreation itself. After two rounds, local Tallahassee Kiwanis clubs provide snacks for all the members. The experience has been extremely rewarding for FSU and TCC CKI members. I recommend that your CKI club look for ways to support those with disabilities in your area. You will learn a great amount about life.

-Joseph Barshay, FSU CKI Editor

“I enjoy all the positive energy and how happy everyone is to be there. The players recognize us and are excited to see us come back.”

“Not only do we get the opportunity to make an impact on the lives of children and adults with disabilities, but we also get to deepen our bonds with our Kiwanis family members while doing it.” -Derek Stewart, TCC CKI
