6 sure ways to ruin hardwood floors Hardwood floors are quite a desirable feature in many homes. Not only do they look fantastic, but are also very durable. That said, you have to invest in some special care. More importantly, you have to be careful about how you use the said floor. Else you risk ruining it and wasting the investment you have made on it. You’d be surprised at how some simple things you do on a daily basis, in fact, contribute to hardwood floor deterioration. Following is a quick rundown of said things you should avoid unless you want to ruin your hardwood floor: 

High heels – high heels are one way you can cause irreparable damage to hardwood floors. Heels are pointy, and they focus the weight of the body on a tiny area. It is not uncommon for heels to cause dents, which is especially the case for stiletto-type of heels. Do your hardwood floor favour and take off high heels before walking inside the home. You allow pets with long nails to run around – another way to ruin hardwood floors is to ignore trimming your pet’s nails. Dogs and cats with long nails can scratch hardwood floors. Not only is this damaging to the finish, but can also drive you crazy – the sound of long nails hitting hardwood is not particularly pleasant. You don’t keep a doormat – if your door opens up directly onto the hardwood floor, you should place a doormat. That way you can keep a large part of the debris out, without them coming into contact with the floor. A doormat serves as a buffer between the outdoors and the finish of your floor. You can wipe most of the dirt and other debris that end up on your shoes there. You can also take things one step further and ban shoes inside. It is a sure way to preserve your hardwood floor. You use too much liquid solution when cleaning – liquids are a known enemy to hardwood floors. The material is usually treated and so can endure some moisture, but that doesn’t mean you should drench the area in water or a liquid cleaning solution. When it comes to wet cleaning, you should only use a damp cloth or mop. You don't use furniture pads – every time you push your chair back, it could leave scratches to your floor. It is not only when you move pieces of furniture, but even when you sit. Slight shifts occur as you place yourself on the sofa and that is enough to mark the floor. Furniture pads are an easy way to prevent such an issue. You don’t sweep the floor – dust, dirt and various other abrasive particles accumulate and cause scratches without you even noticing this process. If you don’t sweep on a regular basis, you can damage hardwood floors.

Now that you know what can ruin your hardwood floor, you can better protect it and care for it. Hardwood floors are an investment, which you should provide adequate care for if you want it to endure a long time.
