Celebrating our 5th Annual Cabin Fever Reliever

With the generous help of Karcher Mall, we will be hosting our 5th Annual, Cabin Fever Reliever. This event will be held at Karcher Mall on Saturday, February 4, 2017. Kids First Cast appreciates the outreach of support from the community to bring this event back year after year. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the Volunteers of Kids First Cast, we are grateful for your support which helps fund these programs each year. This year’s program will be filled with educational and instructional activities for everyone, but mostly designed for kids, and kids at heart! Kids must register to receive a passport to complete each activity. After completing the activities on the passport, each child will receive a certificate of completion along with a FREE goody bag. If you can imagine a fun day filled with the entire mall full of kids, parents and volunteers helping kids to learn great, healthy, outdoor activities, you’ve just envisioned CABIN FEVER RELIEVER 2017. Best of all, no wet mittens or snow filled boots because it will be located indoors within the comforts of Nampa’s very own Karcher Mall. Everything from archery, boat safety, fly fishing, tying flies, casting, and many more exciting activities. Dealers will showcase their new line of vehicles throughout the mall. There will be businesses throughout the mall displaying products as well as nonprofits spreading awareness about their organizations. We can promise you that there will be a little something for everyone, and did we mention that it is FREE admission? Of course, there will be many places to shop, and many products sure to catch your eye, so come spend the day with us and shake off that Cabin Fever! Kids First Cast would appreciate your support

of Karcher Mall, the many vendors, advertisers, businesses, nonprofit organizations and volunteers that work together to bring this event to you. We look forward to seeing the kids and families return each year, we are thankful that our guest list keeps getting bigger! The largest compliment is your referral of Kids First Cast and this event. Kids First Cast making waves By ROBERT MONTGOMERY Books have been written, including my own, about the value of fishing, and, more specifically, the importance of introducing children to the pastime. But Howard Davis is a simple man who can sum up the latter in one sentence. “Taking kids fishing is more fun than I’ve ever had in my life,” said the founder of Kids First Cast, Inc. (KFC), a non-profit, all-volunteer organization in Nampa, Idaho. “With kids you don’t have to deal with politics or anything else. It’s just fishing.” And for the man sporting a twinkle in his eye and a Santa Claus beard, a child is not defined by age. “To me, a kid can be 3 or 103 years old,” he said, recalling a 67-year-old woman whom he instructed. “On her first cast, she caught the first fish of her life, and she was as excited as any 3-year-old. There are big kids too.” Through affiliations with various programs and bass clubs, Davis has been taking kids fishing for 25 years or so, when he can break away from his business, Howard’s Tackle Shoppe. “I’ve probably seen more kids in Idaho catch their first fish than anyone else,” he said. “And it’s amazing how many come back and talk to me. One who is 35 now is still excited about fishing. And he still has the pack of worms that I gave him that day. He won’t use them.” But encouragement from Dyann Aspiazu in 2011 is what prompted him to finally take the plunge and form his own organization, which will take an estimated 6,500 children fishing in 2016. That and a promise from Aspiazu that she would take care of the paperwork and all he would have to do is keep taking kids fishing, as well as do a little marketing and soliciting of donations. “Starting it was not as difficult as I thought it would be,” Davis said. “The most difficult thing is finding enough adult volunteers. I probably do 50 to 60 kids events alone every year.” As well as partnering with Idaho Fish and Game, KFC sponsors outings for disabled veterans and dependents and survivors of military families. One of those occurred this past May

Reprinted with permission of Robert Montgomery and BASS Times where it was originally published in the Sept. 2016 issue. for children whose parents were recently deployed. “One kid caught a 3 1/2-pound bass on his first cast,” Davis remembered. “Another caught 14 bluegill, and he was tickled to death.” The KFC director keeps kids focused on the fishing by not allowing cell phones. “I want them to see there’s something besides cyperspace,” he said. He also debarbs hooks and emphasizes over-theshoulder casting, to lessen the likelihood of catching another participant instead of a fish. “We’re going to start putting together rules and guidelines,” Davis said. “It’s a learning process every time we do an event. “And we seem to get busier and busier every year, because I can’t say, ‘No.’” He admitted that asking for donations was a challenge at first, but then he quickly realized that “it’s amazing what people will do when it’s for kids.” Marketing, meanwhile, seemed to take on a life of its own when Davis purchased a van with a utility box to transport fishing gear and other equipment to events around the state. Wherever it goes now, it’s recognized as “Howard’s Bassmobile.” “When I first saw it, I thought, ‘That would make a hell of a tackle box,’” he said with a laugh, adding that it is adorned with logos of businesses that support KFC, as well as an awning on the side and a big bass (mailbox) chasing a lure on top. Another boost to sustainability has been the “Cabin Fever Reliever,” held each winter as a fund-raiser and a way of promoting and thanking sponsors. Thousands gather to learn all kinds of outdoor skills, in addition to fishing. If Howard Davis had the time and resources, he’d drive the Bassmobile cross country, introducing kids to fishing. “I’m 67-years-old, a diabetic and don’t have the energy I used to,” he said. “But when you care about the kids, things like that aren’t an issue.” For those in other states who feel the same way, he encourages them to form their own non-profits to introduce children to fishing. “The appreciation that you receive from the kids and their parents is overwhelming,” he said. Finally, Davis added, if you have rods and reels that you’re not using, send them to him at 1707 Garrity Blvd., Nampa, ID 83687. He will clean them up and give them to more kids as he continues to have “more fun than I’ve ever had in my life.”

I looked and looked and looked straining, squinting. I kept looking at that far edge of the trail as it disappeared around the crest of the hillside. Spooky. I thought I’d caught a movement right in that edgy spot. It flashed just for a second. I looked away and then back again to do a reality check. No kidding, for a moment, it looked like the hat & giant bandana of John Wayne and two horse’s ears. I was in shock! It had just appeared and disappeared in the same moment. A whisp of a breeze cooled my face and brought the slightest scent of a campfire somewhere up the canyon. Could it be that the cowboy ghost of John Wayne was ambling through the same western mountains that we were fishing in? My eyes bugged out! I looked up there again. Nothing. I splash water on my face and shook my head ferociously and looked again. Still nothing. I better tell my dad. No, he’ll think I’m a crazy 10-year-old. I’d loose my status as the 2nd best fisherman in the state of Washington. Holy Crap!! Where is Dad? Where’s my big brother? Neither are in sight. I can’t even hear them talking over the sounds of the river! Where’s the mountain lion and the bear licking his lips! They pick off the stragglers in the herd, right? OK, Ok. What would Davy Crocket do?. He was the king of the wild Frontier and I’m the King of the monkey bars. I’ve got it! I’m going to rock hop up river. I’ll jump from rock to rock, balancing left and right, using my telescoping fishing rod to balance me like

a high wire artist at the circus. Five fluid ounces of adrenaline dumped into my stomach. I’m as light as a feather. With the agility of an NFL running back dodging would-be tacklers I hop from one bolder to another. First three rocks in a row, then seven. Wow! I’m amazing! 15 rocks and not even a wet toe! My arms wave in the air, my rod flailing all around my head, cheese eggs in my pocket. Forty yards of river slide under me as I approach the right hand bend in the river. I glance over my shoulder. . . . No Bear. No Cougar. Good. Then I hear it. It sounds a little like a steam locomotive whistle. Kind of breathy, medium pitched. I can just hear it over the rush of the river. It’s a human whistle, but it belongs to just one person, my dad. Hop two more rocks to look upstream to the right, around the brush. There he is standing on the left bank about 60 yards upstream with my brother. From here, he reminds me a little of John Wayne. That night we drove up to the Sandpoil Lodge. A little log-built restaurant with five or six little bunk houses in a semi-circle out back across the patchy lawn. The proprietor cooked up our fish for us as I was astonished to observe the heads and horns of every big game animal on planet earth staring down at me from the log walls. Antique guns hanging everywhere. We sat on stools at the bar and a great big, jolly guy sitting next to me asked me if I’d seen “Rolling Rock”. Rolling Rock? What’s that. Who’s that?

He proceeded to tell me the legend of an Indian boy in a contest to win the hand of a beautiful Indian Princes. Whoever shot their arrow the farthest would win her hand in marriage. Rolling Rock shot his arrow clear out of site, took off chasing it and that was the last they ever saw of him. He told me that’s why those signs are along the mountain roads, “Watch for Rolling Rock”. I was amazed that people would still be looking for him. The bunk houses were full up. So we got permission to through our sleeping bags out on the back lawn. I’d never seen the milky way before. My eyelids were slipping a little. Then, OH MY GOSH! A huge flaming ball of fire came whooshing across the night sky. It was so close we could actually hear this thing. It looked like a flaming basket ball with red and yellow flames and sparks streaming off behind it in the night sky. “Dad, what the heck was that?” He said, “It might be “Rolling Rock”. “What?!. “Just kidding” He said, “I think it was a big shooting start that made it farther than usual into earths atmosphere. He seemed just as surprised as me. I could swallow that, so my eyes slammed shut. We caught more fish the next day. Slammed on the brakes for a few more cows, stayed afloat crossing the lake on the Keller ferry and drove back to my dad’s house at 90 mph. My dad was awesome and continued to be awesome. Not Perfect. But Awesome. I think he had been king of the monkey bars when he was a kid too. Mission Accomplished Doug and Cam Gross live in Eagle and are Independent Distributors of Advocare Products.
