Pastor’s Perspective Thanks for your personal support during the time of loss of my good friend Dave Cross with his sudden death. Grief comes and goes with me. I appreciate you watching my tears and listening to my sobs as I express my sorrow and hurt with you. I seek to be honest and authentic with you and I have realized anew that to share hurt is as important as sharing joys. The body of Christ is to laugh with each other and cry with each other. We are to rejoice with each other and listen to each other. We do life together.

First Church Following Christ

I am so blessed to have you in my life. I pray that as one your pastors that I can walk with each of you in your journey of faith. Enjoy the blessings of these months. Thanks for being a faithful and loving church. See you in worship as we share life and faith together.

We will explore the life of David in August with four messages on his life. August 7 will be on the theme of David’s Sin and the Salvation that God offered him. We will celebrate Communion on that Sunday. August 14 will be a message on David and his heart for worship and desire to build God a Temple. August 21 will be the story of David and Goliath, a favorite among children and all ages. We will look at the “giants” in our life and how to face them. Attention to those who are involved in giving the children’s moments as we have eighteen books of children’s sermons available. The will also be located on the Library table. Check them out!!!

Child Protection Policy Update Recognizing that providing a positive and safe atmosphere for the children and youth of our congregation and other community groups meeting in the church is a top priority of our congregation, the Staff Parish Committee has recently reviewed the Child Protection Guidelines that the Administrative Council has adopted for those working directly or indirectly with children and youth. A summary of the policy follows. All adults and youth, employed and volunteer, who work with minors, must complete an application and screening process prior to beginning work. Any volunteers under the age of eighteen (18) must also be under the supervision of an adult when interacting with other youth. An adult or youth who has been convicted of either sexual or physical abuse of a child/youth or those who have a history of inappropriate conduct with children/youth will be not employed and/or shall not volunteer service in any church-sponsored activity or program for minors. A parent or guardian must also sign the youth application form. Employees, volunteers, and supervisors shall make every reasonable effort to observe the “two person rule” at all times. If the Church is arranging the transportation, all drivers must have completed the Volunteer application process, have a valid driver’s license, and proof of insurance. With the adoption of these guidelines, “grandfathering” will no longer be recognized. Any employee or volunteer who does not comply with the guidelines and procedures for reporting alleged incidents of abuse or any other behaviors contrary to their Behavioral Expectations agreement may be liable as an individual without the backing of the Church for their actions and may be removed as an employee or volunteer with the church. Supervision of Children and Youth: Parents need to be aware that there will be general monitoring and supervision of children or youth not more than 10 minutes prior to each activity. Parents need to accompany any child 5th grade or younger to their activity or class. Parents/guardians should not leave their child unattended in a room but remain in the room until an appropriate leader takes charge. Parents/guardians should plan to pick up all children aged 5th grade and younger from the room where their class/activity is being held. Parents/Guardians are reminded that they need to provide supervision for their children when they are in the church building. Each year, volunteers will be asked to reacquaint themselves with the Child Protection Guidelines. We are currently in the process of this annual update. Copies of the Summary of our Child Protection Policy are available in the gathering area and from the office. Copies have also been placed in the church mailboxes. If you have questions about the Child Protection Policy, please see A Staff Parish Relations Committee, Associate Pastor Allison Yankey or Office Manager Pat Kobiela. To report suspected child abuse, please contact Rev. Ted Jansen or Rev Allison Yankey.

Runners and walkers- mark your calendars! The First United Methodist School of Early Learning is hosting the Daisy Walk/Run in honor and memory of children. The date of the event is Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. This event will be open to the congregation, preschool families, and the community. The walk/run starts at Rieke Park, with the majority of the event taking place on the nature trail and finishing in a park pavilion. We hope to raise funds to offer scholarships to preschool families. During the 2010-2011 school year, over 25 families received assistance from the First United Methodist School of Early Learning scholarship program. We hope to help at least the same number of families for the upcoming preschool year. Can you help? Register online at www.auburnfirstunited.com to participate. Brochures can also be found in the Gathering Area. Not interested in running or walking? You can still join in! We are looking for volunteers to help on the day of the event. Contact Kelly Oswalt at 925-2570 or email koswalt@auburnfirstunited.com to find out how you can help. Approximately 30 volunteers are needed. We would love to have you assist! Page 7

LITTLE JOHN THE BAPTIST Johnny’s mother looked out the window and noticed him “playing church” with their cat. He had the cat sitting quietly and he was preaching to it. She smiled and went about her work. A while later she heard loud meowing and hissing and ran back to the open window to see Johnny baptizing the cat in a tub of water. She called out, “Johnny, stop that! The cat is afraid of water!” Johnny looked up at her and said, “He should have thought about that before he joined my church.”
