The Soul Shine Special Edition

Your guide to the latest news about First Step’s Soul Shine Blues Festival! ANDREW “JR. BOY” JONES CONFIRMED FOR SOUL SHINE 2007! We are proud to announce that we have confirmed Andrew “Jr. Boy” Jones, out of Dallas, TX, as the final act for Soul Shine. Those of you familiar with the Texas blues scene should recognize Jr. Boy Jones from his blistering live act. If not from that, then at least from his work with big names in blues such as Freddie King, Charlie Musselwhite, Bobby Patterson, Johnnie Taylor, and Charlie Robert-

son. Jr. Boy began his musical career backing Freddie King in the late 60s at the tender age of 16. From there he quickly grew in talent and renown as a dedicated student of the blues and a vociferous live performer. Jr. Boy is a previous nominee for the W.C. Handy award and has toured extensively internationally with acclaimed blues acts. His most recent release is a live album recorded at Deep Ellum

Blues in Dallas with help about Jr. Boy Jones visit: from special guest from www. the Dallas blues scene. Much of the material on the album is reminiscent of the fiery Texas blues that Jones is famous for. The album was released in February of last year and Jones has been touring the US in support of it ever since. It is our distinct pleasure to welcome Jr. Boy Jones to the Soul Shine stage as yet another musician who adds to the authenticity of our festival. For more information Andrew “Jr. Boy” Jones

Jimmy Burns, veteran of the Soul Shine stage and Chicago bluesman extraordinaire, has released a live album recorded at the Chicago club B.L.U.E.S. In February 2006 we interviewed Jimmy for this newsletter and at the time he wasn’t sure what he was going to record next. In the time since then he and his band have played steadily around the Chicago area. The tracks on the live album are some of Jimmy’s songs with some covers thrown in. The album is also accompanied by a live DVD of the same show. From the snippet that is available on his website it is clear to see that Jimmy

Jimmy and his band performing at Soul Shine 2005

has become one of the standard bearers for traditional Chicago blues. The band sounds tight as ever, and the mood is festive. As a blues elder statesman, it should not be surprising to see Jimmy so at home with his own material. Still, there is something so

completely natural in Jimmy's delivery that is rare to find. We can only hope for our part that this live album is only a stop-gap while Jimmy and the band work on new material. For more info visit:

of this newsletter and sending it back to us. Keep in mind that Soul Shine, in addition to being a celebration of the blues, is also the major fundraiser for First Step. The entire proceeds of the festival go to support vital programs and services for individuals in our community who might find themselves in need. Since its inception Soul Shine has gotten better with time. We hope that you will join us in making this year’s the best Soul Shine ever.

Rick Briney has been going to Soul Shine almost since its inception. In that time he has watched as the festival has grown from its somewhat humble beginnings to the regional blues festival of Northwest Ohio. So, after last year’s festival Mr. Briney felt compelled to give back. “The last few years of enjoyment at the festival make me feel that I owe something back to the organization.” he says. For anyone who

has been to the last few Soul Shines, you can see that the festival has really outdone itself year after year. For us it is evidence that Soul Shine has found its stride. So Mr. Briney decided to contribute by donating an Epiphone Les Paul which is signed by Jim Belushi (not John...Jim) and Dan Akroyd, the Blues Brothers. The guitar was purchased from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Mr. Briney de-

scribes himself as a fan of rock and roll. And of course there is no rock and roll without the blues. The guitar will be among the other items available at Soul Shine through our raffle and silent auction. First Step is deeply grateful to Rick Briney and the many other Soul Shine contributors who help make the festival a success through their generosity. You also can get involved with Soul Shine and make a difference for First Step. Contact us and find out how!

John Lee Hooker “Hooker” Box Set Tracklist Samples Disc 1 1. Boogie Chillen 2. Sally Mae 3. Black Man Blues Disc 2 1. Dimples 2. Every Night 3. I’m So Excited Disc 3 1. One Bourbon 2. Let’s Go Out Tonight 3. Bottle Up and Go Disc 4 1. Baby Lee 2. I’m in the Mood 3. The Healer

I have to confess a certain aesthetic bias toward the music of John Lee Hooker. He is, for me, the quintessential bluesman, in every respect of that word. It was somewhat gratifying, therefore, for me to see him gain more recognition towards the end of his life and career as the blues had a resurgence in mainstream culture. The star of the show with John Lee Hooker has always been his remarkable voice. On the early recordings, Boogie Chillen for example, it was just John Lee and his guitar. And the force in the music, despite its simplicity (or perhaps because it) is unmistakable. This career spanning box set is the perfect introduction to that voice. It is also a fairly

complete representation of Hooker’s music throughout his career. All the old standards are here (Sallie Mae, One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer, Hobo Blues) as well as the material he recorded later in life (The Healer). The attention paid to Hooker’s early career is enough to justify the price ($50), but the impressive thoroughness of the four CD set suggests that someone who knew what they were doing was behind the project. Throughout the entire box set the consistency of Hooker’s material makes itself clearly evident. And it also becomes clear that he was singular in his voice and style, making him an unimpeachable member of the blues pantheon. Songs like “Boom Boom” and “Crawlin’ King Snake” give

examples of his early mastery of the blues lexicon. The beautiful thing is that after starting his career at 16 he played his music until the day of his death at 83. The last two discs of the anthology that focus on the latter part of his career do a great job of picking out the gems (which is not too difficult to do). The remarkable thing is that Hooker was able to perform at a high level even late into his career based on the strength of his previous output. And regardless of the context, the power is always in his incredible voice. For the John Lee Hooker fan this box set is a must have, and for the blues fan it is a formidable testimony to the inimitable music of a blues legend.
