F IRST S TEP Q UARTERLY UARTERLY Summer Issue: August 2009

Letter From the Director Dear Friends, I am delighted that Graná and Henry are coming back to Soul Shine this year. Graná doesn’t sing the blues, she belts the blues and that is just what we are ready for this year at Soul Shine. Everyone gets a case of the blues sometimes and lately we at First Step have had a deep case of the blues due to funding cuts. Hope and faith are carrying us through this tough time. We are being good stewards of what we have been gifted from sponsors and although we have made a few concessions I have complete confidence that this year’s Soul Shine will be an event to remember. We are excited to have first rate blues artists, fantastic food, and plenty of great raffle prizes. I hope to see all of you at Soul Shine, ready to dance your blues away.

The kids are back to school, the night air is growing cooler, and First Step is running at full steam ready to host the 14th Annual Soul Shine Blues Festival! We are pleased to announce that at this year’s Soul Shine we will see two blues greats return to the Soul Shine stage. If you have missed them before you are in for a treat; Graná Louise and Henry Gray are on their way back to Bascom for a great night of music, food, and dancing.

Graná last took the stage at Soul Shine in 2002 and brought the house down using her strong soulful voice. Hailing from Chicago, Graná brings a vocal presence not soon forgotten and known the world over. For anyone that was there, it was a performance to be remembered. Graná will be backed by the Sean Carney Band, who are no strangers to Soul Shine as they have brought their smooth blues sound to the festival before.

For those of you who attended Soul Shine last year, you can easily remember the sweet sound of Henry Gray’s signature blues piano style accompanied by his distinctive and honest vocals. Joining us from New Orleans, Henry Gray has been a staple contributor to the formation of blues piano for the last half century. Having backed Howlin’ Wolf on the keys for twelve years and recorded with countless other greats, Henry’s music is not to be missed!
