Course Details Max No of Students: 10 | Course Duration: 1 Day

Course Summary This initial course is designed in line with HSE recommendations to give candidates the knowledge to rethink the way they lift and handle items at work. Candidates will explore safer techniques, enabling them to understand the importance of planning the way tasks are carried out. They will also gain the opportunity to practice kinetic methods in the workplace.

Course Summary In health and social care services, moving and handling injuries account for 40% of work-related sickness absence. Around 5000 moving and handling injuries are reported each year in health services and around 2000 in social care.

"Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and regulations 10 and 13 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to provide their employees with health and safety information and training. This should be supplemented as necessary with more specific information and training on manual handling injury risks and prevention, as part of the steps to reduce risk required by regulation 4(1)(b)(ii) of the Regulations. Course Contents Manual handling risk factors and how injuries can occur; How to carry out safe manual handling, including good handling technique; Appropriate systems of work for the individual's task and environment; Use of mechanical aids; and Practical work to allow the trainer to identify and put right anything the trainee is not doing safely.

Over 50% of injuries arise from the moving and handling of people. Poor moving and handling practice can lead to: • back pain and musculoskeletal disorders, which can lead to inability to work • moving and handling accidents which can injure both the person being moved and the employee • discomfort and a lack of dignity for the person being moved This Initial course has been designed to enable trainees to be able to carry out People Moving & Handling techniques correctly and helping to prevent the above bullet points. Bespoke training is a challenge we always relish. First Response have designed and implemented Health & Safety training programmes with many of our customers over the years. These bespoke courses range from very minor changes to standard courses, such as for schools we have added a ‘Paediatric Element’ to the standard HSE approved Emergency First Aid at Work course , to designing a complete three year health and safety training programme for one of the largest employers in the UK. Examples of bespoke training Example 1: This example is a package First Response delivers for a company with 5000+ employees of whom include Directors, Office Staff, Cleaners, Electricians and Plumbers etc. For this “Triennial Training” package , we provide one day of training per year to all staff on subjects of the clients choice. The schedule below shows the topics delivered as part of a rolling three year programme. Each course is tailored to the policies and procedures of the organisation, whilst also including what is required by legislation.

Example 2: This example is a half day first aid course designed specifically for a care organisation who provide homes and services that enable people to enjoy a good later life through independent living. Our client didn’t require fully trained First Aid at Work staff as they are not solely responsible for the people in their care however they wanted their staff to have the confidence and basic skills to deal with the most common injuries or illnesses they come across.

Every employer should provide for each work site at least one first aid container supplied with a sufficient quantity of first-aid materials suitable for the particular circumstances. After that you have to assess what you need but the HSE then give this list;

There is no mandatory list of items to be included in a first-aid container As a guide, where work activities involve low hazards, a minimum stock of first aid items might be; 1 x Guidance Leaflet, 20 x Adhesive Plasters, 2 x No 16 Eyepad, 4 x Triangular Bandage, 6 x Safety Pins 2 x Large HSE Dressing, 6 x Med HSE Dressing, 1 x Gloves (Pairs) There is also no mandatory list of items to be included in a first-aid container for travelling workers – they might typically contain; 1 x Guidance Leaflet, 6 x Adhesive Plasters, 2 x Triangular Bandages, 2 x Safety Pins 1 x Large HSE Dressing, Individually Wrapped Moist Wipes, 1 x Gloves (Pairs)
