A Season

of Change

The writer of Ecclesiastes says “for every time there is a season.” At First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, 2019 was a season in ministry with a lot of change. Most notably, a change in staff. We said goodbye to the Reverend Katherine Kerr after almost 12 years of ministry as our Associate Pastor (and Senior Associate Pastor) for Congregational Care. We also welcomed three new senior staff members in Shantiqua Neely (Director of Outreach and Mission), the Reverend Robert Galloway (Associate Pastor for Christian Formation and Young Adults), and the Reverend Anna Rainey Dickson (Temporary Associate Pastor for Congregational Care). All change takes adjustment, but I am beyond thrilled with the staff team we have in place. In our short time working together, I have experienced energy, enthusiasm, and joy. I rejoice in the talent that God has gathered for the sake of helping us carry our Christ’s call in the center of the city and the world around us. The year 2019 was also a time when plans turned into action. After dreaming and talking about a capital campaign for a long while, in October of last year, the Session authorized the start of early fundraising for the purpose of a campaign that will help us renovate our Sanctuary, expand opportunities for outreach, create spaces of welcome, and address long-range plans for the upkeep of our church campus. Last year we were much more intentional about using digital technology to help us tell the story of the good things that God is accomplishing through us as a church. We have a robust social media presence that, every week, is growing the connections to our church. We have started a podcast (Faith Unfiltered) that is gaining traction in our community—and, importantly—beyond us. We have increased our use of video. Through it all, God has been faithful and generous. So thanks be, for you, the members of this vibrant community of faith, and the movement of the Holy Spirit that allows us to trust that change is preparing us for a future filled with hope. We hope you enjoy a look back at a year in photos in this year’s issue of Tapestry. In Christ,
