Summer presents so many opportunities to travel, relax, and try new things. I hope you have found some rest and rejuvenation during these hot months in Atlanta and hopefully some cooler spots too. But now we invite you to re-connect with your friends here at FPC as you look forward to a new year at school or perhaps just a new season. We are adding a casual worship service to the Sunday morning schedule and have shifted a few things to make room for more opportunities to learn and enjoy fellowship with others. See below for the new schedule which starts on Sunday, September 11:

6:30 am Prayer Breakfast – Fifield Hall 8:00 am Communion Worship Service – Chapel 9:00 am Casual Worship Service – Fifield Hall 9:45 am Sunday School 11:00 am Traditional Worship Service – Sanctuary

At both the 9:00 and 11:00 Worship services, children ages 4 and K-3rd grades will attend Worship with their parents and then dismiss to Cherub or Elementary Choir practice; 4th and 5th graders will stay in worship with their parents. Children under 4 will remain in Childcare.

During the Sunday School hour, 6th – 12th Graders will all gather at 9:45 for donuts, announcements of upcoming events, and prayers; then they will disburse to designated classes for 6th, 7th, 8th grade and 9th grade Confirmation Class, while 10th – 12th graders will remain together.

1st – 5th graders will gather together and dismiss to individual grade classrooms.

2 year olds - 5 year olds will have Sunday School in their classrooms for the entire period, and Infants & Walkers will be in Childcare.

Many returning and new Adult Education opportunities will be offered during the Sunday School hour as well. We will have a full brochure with listings and descriptions soon.

HOSPITALIZED: Owen Braun, Ruth Ann Little DEATHS: We offer our condolences to the family and friends of Erik, Binney, Grace and Eliza Granade on the death of Erik’s father, member Charles Granade, who died on June 23rd. The funeral was held on Tuesday, June 28th, at 10:00 am in the Sanctuary.

Our prayers are with the family and friends of Rev. Connie Lee on the death of her great granddaughter, Sevyn Wiggins, who died on Thursday, June 30th.

We offer our condolences to the family and friends of Michael and Kate Monk on the death of Kate’s brother, William “Will” Matthews Hudson, on July 5th of Myrtle Beach, SC. His service was held on Sunday, July 10th at First Presbyterian Church of Myrtle Beach.

SAMARITAN COUNSELING CENTER OF ATLANTA

A

s Rev. Kevin Knab announced in an earlier Chimes edition, Rev. Katie Sundermeier has been named the Executive Director of the Samaritan Counseling Center of Atlanta (20 hours per week). The center’s mission is to deliver traditional and spiritually integrated counseling to the diverse Midtown community, regardless of one’s ability to pay. Samaritan Counseling Center of Atlanta serves people of every age, gender, race, sexual orientation and ethnic background, and offers help to individuals, couples, families and groups.

In addition to her role as Executive Director of SCCA, Katie will continue to work 15 hours per week with the Pastoral Care Team here at FPC. Having Katie in these two positions allows us to deepen and expand the mutual ministry shared between the center and the church and bridge the disciplines and practices of theology, counseling, pastoral care, and psychology. If you have had a connection to the SCCA in the past and would like to get back involved, or if you would like to share your story, offer an idea, or learn more about the center, Katie would love to hear from you! Finally, The Samaritan Counseling Center of Atlanta is looking to fill a part-time counseling position with the opportunity to become full-time. This counselor will be responsible for providing high quality and ethical counseling services to individuals, couples, children/adolescents, families, and groups. Develop and implement treatment plans.

Evaluate client progress. Maintain appropriate electronic records and client statistics per HIPPA standards and attend staff meetings. The minimum requirements are a Master’s or doctoral degree in Social Work, Counseling, or related mental health field. Licensed in discipline by appropriate state board with a consideration of associate licenses.

CHANGES TO SUNDAY MORNING PARKING AT MIDTOWN PLAZA! Our next-door neighbors continue to offer us free parking in the Midtown Plaza parking deck on Sunday mornings. But they have new parking machinery, and in order to continue to park without being charged, we need to adjust our procedures just a bit. BEGINNING JULY 24, Midtown Plaza will no longer be able to raise the arms at the entrances and exits to the deck. FPC worshipers will need to take a ticket when they enter the deck, bring it with them into church, and get a sticker to cover the bar code on the parking ticket so that they can put the ticket back into the machine and leave the deck without having to pay. For the first several weeks of this new procedure, one of our wonderful security team members will be at-the-ready to ensure that everyone is able to leave the deck smoothly. We will also have someone posted at the double doors to the driveway leading to Midtown Plaza to ensure that everyone who parks next door gets a sticker. Please share this news with your friends so that all can park for worship worry-free!

We’ll use This Strange and Sacred Scripture: Wrestling with the Old Testament and Its Oddities as our guide.
