NOVEMBER 22, “Living Gratitude” Joel 2:21-27

In 2013, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) released a new hymnal entitled Glory to God. Our Worship Council has recommended to Session that NOVEMBER 15 & 22- we replace our 1990, blue hymnal with the Glory to God hymnal. The Tony Sundermeier to preach Session is scheduled to vote on that recommendation at its November 17, 2015 stated meeting. If the way be clear, we would begin using the Glory to God hymnal on Pentecost Sunday, May 15, 2016, and there will be opportunities for the congregation to purchase and dedicate new hymnals in honor or in memory of loved ones (new hymnals cost $20 each) in the early part of 2016.

Here are some interesting facts about the new hymnal: • Glory to God contains 853 hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs.

• FPC keeps records of all hymns we sing in worship. There is only one hymn that we regularly sing that is not in Glory to God: the Advent song The Angel Gabriel From Heaven Came.

If we want to sing this in worship, we can print copies for the congregation.

• 384 of the 853 hymns are also in the 1990 blue hymnal. The remaining pieces in Glory to God come from former Presbyterian hymnals, other denominational songbooks, and individual authors and composers.

• Glory to God includes 30 hymns from the 1955 red hymnal that were NOT included in the 1990 blue hymnal, such as Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me, We Shall Overcome, I Love to Tell the Story, Be Still My Soul, and What a Fellowship, What a Joy Divine.

• Glory to God includes music from six continents, covering all major historical and contemporary sacred genres, including approximately thirty-five African American/Gospel hymns, as well as music from the Taize community.

• Glory to God includes 446 hymns that were NOT included in either the 1955 or 1990 hymnals.

Some of those were composed in the last three decades.

• The Glory to God hymnal would expand our options to include beloved hymns that are not in the blue hymnal and new songs consistent with our worship.

Organ Renewal campaign As we approach the 25th year since its last renovation, our exquisite Sanctuary organ needs significant renewal to ensure that its 6097 pipes continue to provide beautiful music.

Specifically, the organ’s thousands of leather patches need to be replaced, the wiring connecting organ console and pipes must be updated, the control system that allows the organist to choose the instrument’s sound must be replaced, and the individual sounds of our organ need to be balanced. After much research by an Organ Renovation Task Force and consideration of multiple bids, First Presbyterian has engaged German organ builder Orgelbau Klais Bonn to complete these renovations. The work will begin in January 2017 and will take several months to complete, but with the exception of very few Sundays, we will use the Chancel organ or the Gallery organ in worship. The total cost of the project is approximately $1.3 million and we hope to raise $1.65 million in order to complete the needed work and fund a maintenance reserve specifically for the organ. Please consider supporting the renovation of this wonderful asset of First Presbyterian.

Carter Bryant, 7lb, 8 oz., was born in Charlotte, NC. Proud parents are Laura and Watson Bryant.

Deaths: Our prayers are with the family and friends of Betsy McDaniel who died on October 20th in Virginia. There will be a memorial service at FPC on November 25th at 10:30 am.

We offer our condolences to Constance Laube Nichols and family on the death of her husband, Charles Fields Nichols, who died on October 27th.

Living Gratitude Annual Campaign • October 25-November 22

Dear Friends of First Presbyterian Church of Atlanta, We are honored and humbled to chair this year’s Annual Giving Campaign. Our theme is “Living Gratitude.” Leading the campaign gives us a chance to express our personal gratitude for this church and the impact its many ministries have had on our lives. First Presbyterian has given us close friendships and fellowship, worship, mission opportunities, Bible study and youth programs. Joan King Salwen, Guest Speaker

Joan Salwen is an organizational strategist who has applied her craft in both business and education. She was an angel investor in Atlanta Girls’ School, the city’s only independent college preparatory school for girls. She later became the founding faculty of the school’s Sara Blakely Academy of Entrepreneurship, a program that equips girls to plan their own businesses and compete for seed capital. After earning a Master of Arts in Teaching, Joan joined and then chaired the English department and, finally, served as Head of School. Prior to joining Atlanta Girls’ School, Joan enjoyed a 20-year career at Accenture, restructuring shared services at Wells Fargo and building BankofAmerica.com. As a senior partner, she led a global women’s initiative to connect women with mentors, training, and opportunities for advancement.

Joan is married to Kevin Salwen, an author and former Wall Street Journal columnist and editor. In 2008, the Salwens sold their 6,500-square-foot home, moved into one half the size, and donated half the sales price to help 20,000 villagers in Africa end their own hunger and poverty. Their children are Joseph, a budding screenwriter, and Hannah, an entrepreneur and the co-author (with Kevin) of the best-selling family memoir, The Power of Half. Joan serves on the board of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta and is a national trustee of Boys & Girls Clubs of America. A native of Iowa, Joan earned degrees from Agnes Scott College and Northwestern University. Most recently, Joan has accepted an appointment as a Distinguished Career Institute Fellow at Stanford University for 2016. She, her husband Kevin, and their dog Charlie will be moving to Palo Alto for 12 months in early January 2016.
