2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Spain

Vintage

2020 was an exceptionally warm year in the vineyards of Navarra. These high temperatures were balanced by abundant rainfall throughout summer, keeping the stony soils and our old Cabernet Sauvignon vines refreshed as they nourished small clusters of plump grapes. September brought dry weather and an early harvest. We work closely with Mother Nature to encourage the best expression of the land by utilizing organic vineyard practices as we adapt to each new vintage. This harmony results in complex wines with impeccable purity and polish.

Navarra’s landscape is a patchwork of ancient villages and vineyards as sprawling plains ascend the foothills of the Pyrenees mountain range, forming a natural border between France and northeastern Spain. For years, these winemaking countries were separated beyond this physical barrier as Navarra’s laws restricted the use of non-native grapes. In the 1980s, this region finally opened its doors to international varieties, allowing warm weather-loving Cabernet Sauvignon to cross the border and find a new home under the Spanish sun.

Tasting notes

Our Cabernet Sauvignon is defined by varietal character. The nose is uplifting and romantic, offering perfumed waves of rose petals, bay leaf and rosemary aromas. As it opens, notes of bittersweet chocolate join the bouquet for an enticing sensory introduction. On the palate, sturdy tannins are balanced by modest acidity, creating a structured mouthfeel where ripe red and black cherry flavors mingle with blackcurrant before hints of cocoa return for a dry finish.

Pairing logic

This wine has all the characteristics of a classic Cabernet Sauvignon. Its pronounced aromas, rich fruit flavors and sturdy tannins make it a perfect match to herbal seasonings and sauces served with lean, high-protein cuts of red meat. Vegetarian dishes should feature hearty root vegetables and legumes with generous salt to emphasize the wine’s full body and ripe fruit flavors. Select seasonings with herbs like rosemary and bay leaf to mirror its aromas and create a unified dining experience.

Winemaking

Navarra is in the middle of a foreign grape renaissance, creating classic international styles from Spanish soils. For this reason, we take great care to emphasize Cabernet Sauvignon’s signature expression. Fermentation in concrete tanks highlights fresh varietal aromas and fruit-forward flavors as we keep the grape skins in constant contact with the wine. Oak aging is the last step, lasting several months to shape Cabernet’s defining structure. The final wine is a love letter from Spanish vineyards to those who appreciate an expertly crafted, timeless Cabernet Sauvignon.

Spotlight

Cellar

• Fermentation in concrete does not impart flavor, emphasizing natural varietal characteristics.

• Oak aging integrates flavors and enhances textures.

Vineyard

• Old vines produce low yields and concentrated flavors.

• Quick-draining, stony soils increase complexity as roots discover nutrients and minerals while searching for water.
