“The city has spent Rs3.5 crore to capture and sterilize stray dogs in the last six-and-a-half years. But instead of falling, their population has only increased, giving a boost to dog menace,” stated Togadia. In response to Right to Information (RTI) activist Tushar Mepani, SMC has claimed

that between January 2014 and September 2020, it caught 47,133 stray dogs and castrated 43,791 of them. It further mentioned that zone-wise bids had been invited and an organization called Vet’s Society for Animal Welfare and Rural Development had been granted the contract for Rs3.48 crore. In the RTI, Meplani has questioned the corporation’s claims of castrating stray dogs. Citing his own
experience, he stated that just a few days ago a dog had bitten her sister-in-law. When his brother took her to SMIMER Hospital for treatment, the hospital did not have rabies vaccine and she was referred to Maskati Hospital. Addressing the issue, Togadia also pointed out that the corporation had claimed that the sterilization of stray dogs had been executed but a surge in their population did not corrobo-
rate their assertion. He further implied that the irregularities cast suspicion over possible misuse of funds allocated to curtail dog population in the city. With the number of people getting bitten by stray dogs increasing, the issue has become a serious cause for concern in Surat. Shefali Pattharwala, resident of Ghod Dod Road, said, “I am a resident of Karimabad Society, near Ram Chowk. Turn to P6
