Last Wednesday evening, after our prayer time in Fellowship Hall, we began a study of the Book of Acts. We are blessed to have a couple of special programs following prayer time this month, but we will return to our study of Acts in the coming weeks. We just have so many neat things happening around First Baptist! Next Wednesday, February 14, is the official birthday of First Baptist Church. That evening, we will have a program highlighting the history of the Church Family over the past 189 years. I am grateful for the people who, through prayer and seeking the will of God, established this place of worship and ministry in Columbus, Georgia in 1829. Richard Hyatt, author of Return to the Water: The Story of First Baptist Church of Columbus, Georgia, will share. Judge Bill Smith, a member of the History Committee, will also take part in the program. This will be a celebration of the past, the present and the future of this Church Family. In the words of the familiar hymn, ‘Tis grace has brought us safe thus far, and grace will lead us home. On Wednesday evening, February 28, following the time of prayer around the tables, Dr. David Levine will introduce us to Jeff Siegel, President of Global Youth Baseball. This organization does missions through baseball training while sharing the Gospel, and Mr. Siegel will speak about their program in Cuba. Dr. Levine has been to Cuba with them and shared in this experience. As focused as we are on missions, and with the changes that have taken place in the relationship between Cuba and the United States, this promises to be an inspiring program. The Sportsman’s Supper is right around the corner, featuring good music and all sorts of hunter-provided food—along with some from the local super market. This is always a time of fellowship, food and inspiration. So many enjoy the fun of being together and have had their lives blessed. I hope you will make plans to attend the Sportsman’s Supper at 6:00 PM March 1. Tickets are available in the church office, on the loggia Sunday mornings, and in Fellowship Hall on Wednesday evenings.

If I had to characterize LADIES’ BIBLE STUDY HAS RESUMED AT THE HOME OF THE ELDERS what I expect this year, I would call it A Year of Amazement. We have only begun to see all God intends to do. Our greatest challenge is staying connected and offering Join the Monday Evening Ladies’ Bible Study the best of ourselves to the tasks. that meets at the home of the Elders (2406 Hilton Avenue) each week at 6:30 PM. Books Your Pastor, may be purchased in the church office or at Jimmy the study. Cost for each book is $13.00.

In Ruth 1 and 2, we find Naomi and her daughter-in-law, Ruth. Their husbands have died; and Ruth has the opportunity to return home to her family. Instead, she chooses to show kindness to Naomi and stay with her. Ruth’s kindness doesn’t go unnoticed. Boaz sees that Ruth is caring for her mother-in-law. He goes above and beyond to care for Ruth, and this completely changes her life. The bottom line: Be kind to your family and friends, whom we often find ourselves taking for granted. We hope that, through the story of Ruth, kids will learn to show kindness to those we care about most.

A BIG shout out goes to First Baptist Ladies’ Ministries! Thank you for all the wonderful items you collected at the January retreat— they will stock the “store” at Victory Mission for the rest of the year. We truly appreciate your generosity! Show me a person with Jesus in her heart, and I will show you a missionary. Show me a person without Jesus in her heart, and I will show you a mission field. #firstonmission #lovewhereyoulive

Here we are in the first week of February. How are your New Year’s Resolutions going? I hope you are accomplishing what you set out to do and that it is becoming easier. The main thing is that if you stumble or miss-step in your walk, you correct your course and continue. Don’t let one digression eliminate the whole resolution. If your goal was daily devotions, resume where you left off. If you were going to volunteer for some cause here at church or in the community, reschedule your appointment. If you intended to join a Bible study, I’m sure there are opportunities for you to continue on that path. The main point is not to concede defeat. Make a new start now. At the end of the year, you will be glad you did. If you are looking for a Bible study, give me a call. I would enjoy helping you find something of interest just for you. Blessings.

CITY MINISTRY (secondstoryfbc@gmail.com) [Brandon Strozier]

This past Friday, I surveyed Second Story in the early afternoon. In every corner, students could be found conversing, catching up or even meeting people for the first time. And I realized that an original vision for Second Story had finally come true. We have always had successful events and the growth element we sought; but I envisioned 2S becoming an everyday, filled-with-students type place that almost never turned the lights off. Your tentative but encouraging update this week: we made it!

(kfranklin@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com)

We have two new Koart Scholars (music interns). Rashaan Skrine is a freshman Music Education major from south Georgia. He is a trumpet player, sings bass and is very involved with Second Story. Reisa Fukuda is an Artist Diploma major from Japan. She plays violin and sings soprano. I encourage you to get to know these fine young people as we bring them into the First Baptist Church Family.

YOUTH MINISTRY (dpotter@firstbaptistcolumbusga.com) WOW! THANK YOU! I’m blown away by your show of support during our Souper Bowl of Caring. In total, we raised $1812.25 and collected 70 items for the Food Closet! Thank you for providing our youth with this opportunity to lead and then supporting them in their efforts. We can’t wait to host you at the Couples’ Date Night and Senior Adult Valentine Banquet later this week!
