FIRST WORD April 2019

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH 712 RANDOLPH ST NW, WASHINGTON, DC

REVEREND DR. FRANK D. TUCKER, SENIOR PASTOR

PASTOR’S PEN 8:45 AM Church School 10:00 AM Worship Service

Spring is in the air. This season suggests freshness, renewal and new birth. It is in this spirit that we welcome the month of April. The joy and hope that we feel comes from the abundance of love and goodwill that was shared in the 80th birthday celebration of your Senior Pastor in March. With that spirit of love and fellowship we greet April with great joy and the promise of resurrection hope. We have a full and aggressive series of activities in the month of April. Considerable progress has been made on our elevator project. We will share the details of that progress and future challenges at our church meeting on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at 9:00 am. We will also review our program for future ministry in First Baptist. On Sunday, April 14, 2019, at our 10:00 AM Worship Service, we will observe Palm Sunday. We encourage your participation in commemoration and meaning of the final approach of Jesus into Jerusalem. On Friday, April 19, 2019, we will observe Good Friday Services from 12 noon to 3:00 PM. This service will be a powerful spiritual experience, highlighted by the illumination of the seven last words uttered from the Cross by Jesus. Each year the spirit of God moves mightily in this service. Come and be blessed. Resurrection Day celebration will be on Sunday, April 21, 2019. The schedule is as follows: 6:30 AM 7:40 AM

This is a wonderful time to embrace afresh the power of the Resurrection. Our faith is grounded and sustained by the good news that He lives. Let’s celebrate the joy that comes alive in our hearts when we affirm the love of God extended to mankind when He evidenced the promise of everlasting life. On the fourth Sunday, our Ushers’ Ministry will celebrate their Annual Day. The Ushers’ Ministry is a leading group of servants who provide a model for Church Ushers throughout the nation. We are proud of their faithful service and standard of excellence. Let us honor them with our support and encouragement. Don’t miss Ushers’ Day.

We need to prepare for our Spring Revival, which will take place from Wednesday, May 1 through Friday, May 3, 2019. The Revival Committee, under the leadership of Deacon Hardman, will need your help in reaching out to ensure that our members and friends participate in this opportunity for spiritual reflection and renewal. Our preacher for the occasion will be The Reverend Omari Hughes, Associate Minister at Reid Temple AME Church in Maryland. “Let the redeemed of the Lord Say So.” Finally, let me thank each member of First Baptist for your kindness shown during my birthday celebration. Gratitude is offered to Deacon Bagley and the Facilitation Committee for their outstanding and diligent work. Please continue in the great spirit of cooperation and love.

FBC Missionary Society Ministry (By Sister Colleen Sweat and Fellow Missionaries)

“HE ROSE” The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is proof that He has conquered death and has thrown open the door of everlasting life. Because of Christ’s death on the Cross, we can know the joy of God’s forgiveness for our sins. And through His resurrection we can have the assurance of everlasting life. Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;” (NIV) (John 11:25). After the dark hours on the Cross, where Christ was judged by God for our sins, His body was placed in a new tomb. His enemies went and the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone and posting the guard. Three days later, on resurrection morning, “And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.” (Matthew 28:5, 6) kjv. Jesus Christ arose from the dead! The Savior who, “took on our sins so that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” was accepted by His Heavenly Father. The “Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world” had fulfilled the work of God for our redemption. Because of Christ’s resurrection you can receive God’s salvation: “That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” (Roman 10:9) kjv. You can be assured that Jesus Christ is living for you. The living Savior “Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25) kjv.

Because Jesus Christ lives in Heaven today, those who trust Him for salvation will one day be with Him. He promises: “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live”. (John 11:25) kjv. Recently, Missionary June Cunningham, who volunteers at our First Baptist Church, Senior Center (FBSC) every Wednesday of each month was recognized in the FBSC newsletter for January, February and March 2019. She leads the Wednesday Senior Fellowship Time, she diligently gives her love, her time and her patients to our senior’s at the center. Missionary Cunningham has been a blessing to the seniors and staff. The Baptist Convention of the District of Columbia and Vicinity Women’s Auxiliary Women’s Conference, Saturday April 6, 2019, 9:00 AM.– 4:00 PM., at Mount Bethel Christian Center, 17420 Mt. The Missionaries of First Baptist Church Attend Stoddard Baptist Nursing Home on the first Sunday, April 7, 2019, while there we will worship and fellowship with the residents, families and staff. We invite you to come and join us each first Sunday of the month to bring joy, peace and happiness to others. The FBC Missionaries are also engaged in ministry with the Lott Carey Foreign Mission. “FBC HEALTH MINISTRY (By Deaconess Barbara Dryden Stanard)

The First Baptist Church Health and Wellness Project was organized in October 2018. It is the brain child of our pastor, The Reverend Dr. Frank D. Tucker. His vision is to see that members 80 years old and above of the First Baptist Church and community obtain access to good information on health, finances, nutrition and home improvement. He hopes to improve the quality of their lives which will enable them to live longer and healthier. We have had several seminars and workshops, great speakers, and lots of fun! Our seminars are now open to all seniors at every age. The next one will be in May, date to be determined. However, we look forward to you coming and learning about how you can improve your lifestyle or the lifestyle of a love one. Stay tuned!
