The Messenger firsT bapTisT hunTsville FiRSt tHOugHtS David Hull, Pastor Sometimes the storms of life descend upon us. The ship of our lives is suddenly caught up in the wind and the waves of a situation that rocks our boat. Occasionally we can see the storms heading our way over the horizon. At other times they catch us when we least expect it. The diagnosis is bad . . . our job has ended . . . a relationship is broken . . .an unexpected event happens that quickly changes our plans. You know about these storms. If you have lived long enough, some kind of storm has come along and ended the smooth sailing you were enjoying and caused you to think and act differently. So what do you do in the midst of the storm? As Christians we have the Bible to guide us through the storms of life. In fact, sometimes it is good to read about actual storms in the Bible and how the people of God responded. One of my favorite passages like that comes from Acts 27:13-44. The Apostle Paul is a prisoner on his way to Rome. The ship on which he is sailing is caught in a long and violent storm. Through the storm the prisoner ministers to his captors. In fact, the most amazing thing is that Paul serves up a picnic in the middle of the storm. Imagine that! Maybe that is exactly what we need to do this Sunday. The storms of life will wash us along this week, but on Sunday we will stop in the middle of the storm and gather around the Lord’s Table. We will break bread and drink from the cup. I think that is what Jesus intended. That Thursday night long ago was certainly a stormy night for our Lord as he was betrayed, arrested, denied, and tried. The next day he was crucified. Yet in the middle of that storm he stopped to share a supper with his friends – just like Paul did later on the ship . . . and just like we need to do this Sunday. I invite you to read the story in Acts 27:13-44 before you come to worship on Sunday. My message is “A Stormy Supper.” The act of worship is not a retreat from the storms of life – but it is a way to experience God’s peace in the midst of the storm. Come, let us worship together.
