Volume 64 / Week Number 44 / November 7, 2013

The Messenger firsT bapTisT hunTsville FiRSt thOughtS David hull, Pastor “Transformed for a Purpose.” You will be hearing and seeing these words for the next few weeks throughout our church building and in our worship services. This is our Stewardship Emphasis Theme for this year. Our Stewardship Committee has done an excellent work in selecting the theme and in preparing our hearts and minds to experience the transformation that comes through Christ. In worship, we will focus on this transformation and talk about the way that we are changed for a purpose. The theme verse that will echo throughout worship for the next three Sundays is from Colossians 3:10. “And you have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” (ESV). This verse is a part of a larger section of Scripture that includes Colossians 3:1-17. Each week I will link the theme verse to that great statement of God’s resurrection power in our lives that is found in verses 1-4 of the chapter. Do you remember those words? If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. (ESV) I invite you to join us in worship each week as we consider God’s transformation in our lives, as we prepare for a season of Thanksgiving, and as we consider our financial commitments to God through the church in the year to come. All who belong to Christ have been “Transformed for a Purpose.” Let’s talk about that together. November 10

“Practice Resurrection” Colossians 3:1-17

We will talk about what it means to “Practice Resurrection” when we “have been raised with Christ” (v. 1) and have “put on the new self” (v. 10). November 17

“Take Me Higher” Colossians 3:2, 10

The challenge to “Set your minds on things that are above” (v. 2) is how we are “being renewed in knowledge” (v. 10) November 24

“Image is Everything” Colossians 3:3-4, 10 Commitment Sunday

We reflect the “image of its creator”(v. 10) when we are “hidden with Christ in God.” (v. 3)

Under the forward thinking leadership of Ruth Patterson, First Baptist Huntsville began providing Christian Education to children with intellectual disabilities in November of 1963, a full 12 years prior to national legislation requiring states to provide public education to children with disabilities. Thank you First Baptist members for 50 years of faithful support of Special Education Ministry in our congregation. The greeting cards you have sent over the last few weeks have been such a pleasure for our class. Please continue to celebrate with us! Our room is located in the Music Suite near the East Entrance. You are invited to visit during our Open House on Sunday, November 17 from 8:45-9:30 a.m.

Worship Service

The Lakewood PTA is sponsoring its annual Fall Festival (carnival). We need several volunteers to help with the bounce house, carnival booths, registration, food booths, and other tasks. Volunteers are asked to arrive early for set up and/or stay after for clean up. This is a great project for a class or department to adopt.

Transformed for A Purpose And you have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. - Colossians 3:10 The ultimate goal of Christianity is transformation: from unrighteous to righteous, from hearers to doers, from people of the world to people of God, from self-centered to Christ-centered, from lovers of the flesh to lovers of the Spirit, from independent to interdependent, from inevitable death to everlasting life. The Holy Spirit is ever present to transform us so that we are used by God for good and for His glory. As we are being transformed from takers to givers, search your own heart about the financial resources God would have you give to His Church this coming year.
