The Messenger firsT bapTisT hunTsville

this sunday November 24, 2013 What happens to an individual when he or she meets Christ? What transformation occurs in the behaviors, attitudes, or thoughts of a person who encounters the living Savior? What does it mean to become Christian? as simple as it may sound, it means to stop being deceived and living in darkness. It means to turn away from that darkness and go in the opposite direction – into the full light of Jesus Christ. There is a dramatic and total transformation out of the world of darkness into the kingdom of God’s eternal light. The Apostle Paul’s letter to the church at Colossae describes what happens to an unsaved person when that human being begins a walk and life with Christ: “…and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.” Interestingly, Paul uses the phrase about putting “on the new self” in a way that symbolizes the taking off of old garments and redressing in new ones. He instructs us to put on a new self, a new set of garments with God’s designer tag sewn into it. The believer cannot have the same relationship to sin that he or she lived in before trusting Christ. and just as one no longer wants to wear old clothes when he gets new clothes, the Christian is no longer satisfied to walk in old and sinful ways. the Christian would rather walk in the salvation and light of Christ. So, what happens to an individual when he or she meets Christ? that individual now dresses in a wardrobe picked out by God. It is a wardrobe with a purpose in mind – that of mirroring the compassion and generosity our Savior has shown to us. Every detail of our lives – our words, actions, and thoughts – are lived out in love, in the name of Jesus Christ. Let’s demonstrate our gratitude and compassion for God’s people and his Church on Sunday, November 24. this is our Commitment Sunday – the day we ask that you consider your financial commitment to the work God is doing here at First Baptist Church for the coming year. Regardless of your choice of wardrobe on November 24, we ask that you wear love – your basic, all purpose garment.
