Rolf Prima

Vigor Alpha

Rolf Prima claims that its Vigor Alphas are the fastest alloy wheels in the world – across all yaw angles – and can potentially save you four minutes and 26 seconds in an Ironman, compared to Mavic’s Ksyrium SLs at 37kph. The American brand says this is thanks to a wider rim profile that smooths airflow better across the whole tyre/rim profile and a low 14-front, 16-rear spoke count. While it’s hard to verify this on the road, the handmade wheels certainly feel speedy from the get-go, accelerating fast and easily holding a pace we’d normally expect from a deeper profile, aided by the smoothest of titanium freehubs. The bladed spokes are arranged in the company’s signature paired style, and despite the low overall count, stiffness is superb, with the wheels holding true throughout testing for our 66kg rider. At just over 1,450g for the set, they’re nimble up climbs too. The Vigor Alphas are also superb in windy conditions, performing well into headwinds and maintaining their easygoing handling in strong crosswinds, making them an excellent choice for nervous bike handlers or lighter riders who find themselves pushed to and fro in windy weather.

Swans goggles are now available outside of Japan, and the FOX1PM is part of the company’s open-water swimming range. The polarised, smoked and mirrored lenses not only protect your eyes from the sun’s brightness, but glare and surface reflections too, making them ideal for sunny swimming. Though the lenses aren’t as large as some other open-water goggles, the field of vision is good and clarity is superb. The supplied interchangeable nose

bridges make finding a comfortable fit easy, and the soft gaskets keep their seal well without too much pressure. The FOX1PMs are great in the pool too, where their sockethugging design is less prone to leaks after hard push-offs, making them versatile training and racing goggles.

GOrun 2

Peak Performer

The combination of extremely light weight (UK size 10 shoes weigh 190g each), flexibility and a 4mm heel-toe drop means every outing in the GOrun 2s feels fast, with neither the shoes’ weight nor structure holding you back from a pacy, highcadence run. The stretchy upper allows plenty of toe movement and also means you can slide the shoes on when already snugly tied, making them great for racing

with the security of real laces. They come with a removable insole for extra comfort that can be discarded for an ultra-minimal experience, and there’s a plush bounciness to them despite their pared-down design. As a midfoot shoe, Skechers doesn’t recommend them for overpronators and if you’re a heel striker, you’ll have to move into them gradually, but once the transition’s complete, you won’t want to wear anything else for fast runs.

PZ3TX Swimskins are designed to help you swim faster in nonwetsuit races, and this one from Blueseventy is one of the most popular on the market. The suit’s hydrophobic material and welded seams serve to lessen drag by covering your tri suit and compressing muscles to reduce physical surface area. Blueseventy recommends sizing up if you’re in the middle to upper end of their size chart, which was sound advice for us. The suit is comfortable, unrestrictive and easy to get on and off thanks to a zip that holds securely but pulls apart easily on swim exit. In the water, it feels just like a one-piece tri suit, but your splits will tumble to somewhere between a regular swimming costume and a wetsuit.

Revenge R2O

With two 200ml bottles and a removable zipped pocket for treats – or keys – the Revenge R2O has everything you need to keep you going on long runs. The adjustable, Velcro-secured waistband is one-size-fits-all and is backed with ThermaFoam padding for comfort and breathability. Secured in moulded holsters, the bottles have soft silicone caps and the rate of flow is just right to guzzle while running. The only problematic element is finding the sweet spot between the belt being too tight and bouncing up and down annoyingly with every stride – something we struggled with throughout testing. If you manage to get it settled though, you’ll forget it’s on.

energy gel (box of 8)

gu launched the world’s first energy gel back in 1991 and they’re still innovating. This new winter-special salted caramel flavour adds extra sodium to their usual blend of carbs, sugar, caffeine (in some flavours) and potassium, plus amino acids and vitamins C and E to promote recovery. At 32g, GU gels are among the smallest on the market, but they pack quite a punch. The addition of salt to the caramel makes for a unique taste, which is surprisingly moreish, and we found the 100-calorie boost ideal when taken according to directions.
