holy grail of enjoyment in the sport. They also learned that you could still suffer on climbs, even in Gauteng.

Judging by the response of the riders who competed in this year’s series, it seems that Nissan succeeded in bringing mountain biking to the doorstep of Gauteng’s cyclists. The riders couldn’t stop talking about the amazing single track sections and true bush experiences. “Single track” is considered the

Jock Green said the highlight of Nissan’s Down and Dirty in Centurion was going through the last river crossing: “I was actually laughing when I raced through the water and it sprayed all over me. It was a brilliant idea to have the crossing so near the end of the race, because it cooled us down.”’

“I rode some stunning single track sections. The organisers should be complimented on the route they selected,” was Theresa Ralph’s comment after winning the women’s race of Nissan’s Van Gaalen-event at Skeerpoort.

Justin Arnoldi said that the organisers continue to surprise him after his ride in Nissan’s Diamond Rush event in Cullinan: “I don’t know how they manage to keep on finding these amazing mountain biking trails in Gauteng.” Anne Smith said that there were unbelievable rock formations on a part of the route, which felt like “riding into a fantasy world.” Mike Rethman, who competed in the Nissan Diamond Rush’s 40km race, said he had run into a herd of blesbok while riding through one of the game reserves, when they impulsively decided to stampede across the track right in front of him.

Nick Bester, a Comrades Marathon legend, was full of praise for Nissan’s Hazeldean Route: “I was highly critical of the organisers last year, but I take it back. The route was amazing. It’s hard to believe that there are still such fantastic mountain biking trails in Pretoria”. A special moment happened during Nissan’s Diamond Rush in Cullinan, when Elsa Karsten took time off to rescue a puppy. Without giving it another thought, Karsten got off her bike, picked up the little puppy, stuffed it into the front of her cycling shirt and started riding again. Seconds after finishing, her face lit up in a broad smile when she opened her shirt and, to the astonishment

dusi canoe marathon with a celebrity splash

The Natal Canoe Club together with their new title sponsor, The Unlimited, hosted the launch of the 2011 Dusi Canoe Marathon on the 9th September. The event was held at the second overnight stop at Inanda Dam and brought together top paddlers, celebrities and other stakeholders for an action packed afternoon. Celebrities Ryan Botha, Mark Bayley, Megan Coleman and Tracy McGregor were paired with previous Dusi winners Michael Mbanjwa, Martin Dreyer, Ant Stott, Andrew Birkett and Jason Graham and the teams pitted

their skills against each other in a short canoe race, giving guests a taste of the excitement that The Unlimited Dusi canoe marathon promises to deliver in 2011. “We are thrilled to be associated with the Dusi. It is such an iconic event that is steeped in tradition.” said Iain Buchan, Chairman of The Unlimited, “This is also a good fit for our company as it provides a platform to raise awareness for our charity, the unlimited child. We have over 100 crèches that we support in the Valley of a Thousand Hills and plan to commit R10 million in sponsorship over the next

three years. It is very exciting to be able to add the world’s toughest canoe marathon to our portfolio.” Race organisers also announced that the event has moved from January to February the 17th, 18th and 19th. This change of date will allow for more time for the dams to be filled thus ensuring adequate water levels. “Umgeni Water advised us that there is more water in the dams and river system in February and it is usually of better quality during that time,” said Cameron Mackenzie, Chairman of the organising committee.

Dan Hugo has certainly made the Triple Challenge event his own, taking his fifth consecutive win in the events nine year history. Defending champ Hugo looked comfortable amongst the lead pack and made his intentions clear once onto the testing 54km mountain bike leg down to Inanda Dam. Being the only individual athlete to break the two hour mark on the bike leg (1h55.04) meant Hugo led onto the final 18km paddling leg with a secure margin over the rest of the field. Despite having only returned from an intense racing season in the States two day’s prior, Hugo displayed true professionalism as he paddled home to his fifth consecutive victory at the Triple Challenge, making him the most prolific winner of the event, which will celebrate a decade next year.

World Champ Dawid Mockè added the SA Single ski title to his wins by snatching the KIA SA S1 Champs in East London. Mockè won by a minute, bagging R10 000 and a confidence boost ahead of his international campaign. Hank McGregor took silver ahead of Jasper Mockè and Tom Schilperoort, with Richard von Wildemann completing the top five. The women’s race was a close finish, but Michele Eray took the title from Nikki Mockè thanks to a lucky wave.

DID YOU KNOW?

FUTURE INSPIRATION

Approximately 50–60% of energy used during 1–4 hours of continuous exercise at 70% of maximal oxygen capacity is from carbohydrates and the rest from free fatty acids. Training does not change the total amount of energy used but rather the proportion of energy derived from carbohydrates and fat. Interestingly enough, a trained individual uses a greater percentage of fat than an untrained person – at the same workload. Fatty acids from blood and muscle triglycerides are an important fuel for aerobic exercise of moderate intensity. Short chain fatty acids are converted to long chain fatty acids when available to the body in sufficient concentration.

TANITH MAXWELL

Every now and then someone comes along that makes you stop and think. Athletes are often on this list and Tanith Maxwell is no exception. “My goal to represent my country in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games, World Champs and ultimately the Olympic Games has been something that I have been dreaming about for many years.” Tanith knew from an early age (7!) that she wanted to run. This passion persisted and at school, Tanith made the provincial athletics team. Not long after this Tanith made the national team and really began to climb the ladder in the athletics world. Then a strange thing happened. By early 2007 Tanith was struggling. “During training I started experiencing signs of fatigue and an overall tiredness … my quads were weak and ‘burned’ with exhaustion. I couldn’t recover and I had to skip afternoon sessions and days after my long training run.” Tanith began to lose as much as 5 minutes on her time during the second half of her races. With the help of a sports nutritionist, Tanith realised that she was not taking in enough carbs for her very

THE BOTTOM LINEFUTURE LIFE OF ULTRA EVENTS: An ultra athlete needs to consume slow release (low GI) carbohydrates to feed the aerobic energy pathway. The athlete also needs to have a steady supply of fatty acids that will be used as time goes on. Future LifeTM is a great source of carbohydrate AND an excellent source of resistant starches. Resistant starches are not digested immediately but are broken down later on in the digestive process and converted to short chain fatty acids which in turn can be stored as long chain fatty acids. These two sources of energy are needed for training and performance. Future LifeTM is a PERFECT source of energy for an ultra athlete.

THE KEY

demanding training programme. This resulted in Tanith’s poor recovery and symptoms of burn out. It was at this low point that Tanith discovered Low GI Nutrition and low GI future life (this didn’t happen until 2010) “Had it not been for this , I don’t think I would have been able to cope with the relentless training that marathoning demands.” Low GI Nutrition is a balanced nutrition programme that focuses on slow release carbs that help build sustained energy during training and racing - the ultimate racing fuel. In April 2010 Tanith used Future Life as part of her preparation for the London Marathon. “The results were amazing! It is also brilliant to travel with Future Life sachets – I used 2 sachets, 2.5 hours before the start of my race and it was great!! Tanith ran one of her best races ever, placing 15th in a strong international field with a time of 2:34.22. But this was not Tanith’s best marathon of 2010. In August 2010, Tanith ran the Real Berlin City Marathon in Germany, placing 8th with a career topping time of 2.32.33. “My time now ranks me as the 4th fastest on the all time list for marathon women in SA........

It’s really exciting and I can’t wait to get going on training preparations for London 2011 – I just confirmed my invite! Future life is a complete Low GI complete meal suited for the endurance athlete. It is nutritionally complete and provides the body with the nutrients and vitamins it requires during training. Added to this Future Life has an immune boosting supplement Moducare”. Moducare is clinically proven to improve the immunity of the endurance athlete and facilitate faster recovery. Future Life can be conveniently used as a meal or a shake as well as a pre , post and during event meal making it the most versatile nutritional shake/meal around. Future Life has no added preservatives or colourants making it a completely natural product. Tanith’s huge discovery of Low GI Nutrition and Future Life cannot be underestimated in her march to the top of the podium. Future Life played an important role in Tanith’s successes and is there for anyone who cares to dream of one day doing great things. How’s that for Future Inspiration!

stretching new ideas Many people don’t take stretching seriously as an effective Means of enhancing one’s perforMance and reducing the risk of injury. Many people are put off because there never seeMs to be any consensus about the best Methods, how long a stretch should be held, and when the best tiMe to stretch is. research studies in recent years have literally turned our thinking about stretching on its head.

fUnCTIOnS Of STRETChIng To increase the flexibility of muscles, tendons and other contractile structures, and to increase the flexibility and mobility of joints and ligaments (non-contractile structures). Most of us focus on stretching the contractile structures (muscles) but the non-contractile structures are often ignored, which leads to joint sprains and injuries.

STaTIC STRETChIng This is holding a stretch for a period of time without moving. Doing this before an event or an hour before running-type exercise actually reduces performance in terms of both speed and power. The stretching “over activates” the little sensors in the tendons of the muscle so they are no longer able to fire at their maximum ability, slowing the effective contraction speed of the muscle down.

PRE-TRaInIng PREPaRaTIOn: dynamic stretching: before training (or an event) we should focus on stretching joints only. This is achieved through dynamic stretching. An example of a dynamic stretch would be walking lunges. These would effectively stretch the hip, knee and ankle joints and also increase the flexibility of the pelvis as a whole. Other examples of dynamic stretches are high knee lifts, and kicking your heels to your buttocks. It is important to develop sport-specific stretches for yourself. Static stretching: should under no circumstances be abandoned, but rather when it is done should be addressed. The traditional static stretches that we are all familiar with should be done after exercise as part of a “cool down” session. Research has also shown that holding a traditional static stretch for 30 seconds or 2 minutes seems to make little difference in terms of flexibility, therefore it is recommended that a stretch is simply held for 30 seconds. These stretches are actually a preparation for the next session, not the current one, just like any other part of the training regime. totalsPorts challenge kleinMond Reigning Totalsports Challenge Champion, Dan Hugo is excited to once again be defending his title at one of his favourite events, the Totalsports Challenge presented by New Balance and Powerade starting in Gordon’s Bay on Saturday, 08 January 2011. According to Hugo, the Totalsports Challenge is more doable than most people would expect. “I really believe that most people will be able to complete the Totalsports Challenge. They just need to have realistic expectations, while getting their nutrition right. Most competitors are frightened by the surfski and K1 canoe disciplines, this is really not necessary as there is a secure boat for every level of paddler, you just need to get the best advice. I enjoy the variety of disciplines the most. This is also one of the only events where you will find top paddlers, runners, mountain bikers and swimmers competing. It is also the only event where my family can also get involved either by competing or by being part of my support team. I find that I enjoy the Totalsports Challenge more than I race it,” says Hugo. TRAIL RUNNING

RYan SandES the majority of trail runners head for the tar or pavement trails during summer. this is because it gets very hot, with a lack of water and flowing streams on the mountains. snakes are frequently seen on the trails and sometimes runners are lucky enough to run into a puffie sun tanning across their path. therefore, dodging cars on ‘urban trails’ has always been more appealing. however, with the massive boom in trail running over the past few years, races take place throughout the year and a lot more people are heading out onto the trails in summer. below are a few pointers to help you keep safe on the trails in summer.

safety first

I

n any form of exercise, it is vital to stay hydrated and this is even more important on the mountain. As a kid, I was always taught to have respect for the ocean and the same should apply to the mountain. Ten kilometres on a mountain trail can take an experienced trail runner up to two hours to run if the terrain is very technical. Therefore, when heading out onto the mountains this summer, make sure that you are carrying enough water and have a reserve supply in case anything goes wrong or you get lost. I have made this mistake before, and crawled off Table Mountain on all fours, feeling out of it and with hazy vision. Carry plenty of food with you too, as well as some electrolytes and a basic first aid kit. During the last few years, it has been scary to see how many of my friends’ parents have been diagnosed with skin cancer. The hole in the ozone layer is growing bigger every day, and sunscreen should be a MUST-have item for any trail runner. A hat or visor and eyewear will also protect you. I suggest that for those

who are sensitive to the sun, full-length tights and a long sleeved t-shirt should be worn for added protection. I love running in summer because you can wake up at 6am, head out onto the trails and be back at 9am in time to start the day in a positive frame of mind. For those who have to be at work early, there’s enough daylight to get a nice long run in after work. When it’s really hot, I suggest running first thing in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat of the day (unless you are training for a race in the desert). This will reduce your risk of getting dehydrated and sun burnt. I have a phobia of snakes and this is the scariest part of trail running for me. I have been known to let out a high pitched squeal when seeing a snake, and once even tried to throw my running partner onto a sun tanning Puff Adder as I was backtracking up the trail. I have learnt that a snake will normally bite the second or third runner in a group, so make sure that you’re always in front! In all seriousness, the best way to avoid standing on a snake is to look about 1.5 – 3 metres in

front of you when you’re running. This will also help you to see what is coming up on the trail and prevent you from going over on your ankle or tripping on a tree root etc. The majority of snakes enjoy lying on the trails midmorning or late afternoon, so beware during these times. If you happen to see a snake, keep your distance and let it pass – remember to respect the fact that you are in their backyard. I suggest (for safety reasons) that you run with a partner or in a group when heading onto the mountain. Carrying a cell phone with you is a good idea, but there’s often no signal on certain stretches of the mountain. Anything can happen up there and accidents do happen, so run with a partner. Unfortunately, there have been a number of muggings on the trails lately, so if you’re running in a group and slightly spread out it’s much harder for muggers to strike. It sucks to think like this, but it’s the reality. We have some of the most beautiful trails in the world, so I hope to see you out there this summer. If you don’t go, you won’t know! www.ryansandes.com FREE MAGAZINE DOWNLOAD [www.sportsguide.co.za]

hen the chance arose to travel to some surfski races in Europe this year, I jumped at the opportunity, and wasn’t surprised that some other ‘Saffas’ did too. Surfski paddling in Europe is small compared to the paddling scene here, but it’s growing. there’s already a culture of paddling in all the flat water sprinting and marathon, so there’s no reason that surfski won’t take off. With the international canoe Federation giving some events accreditation as official World cup events, people are starting to take notice. the prize money’s great for the top paddlers, the locations of the World cups are really interesting, and it’s realistic for the average paddler to take a holiday to Europe to do a few races. i picked three surfski races in Europe over a 3 week period, and was joined by some of Sa’s best paddlers. First up was the Nelo Summer challenge, just outside porto in the north of portugal. With the date of the race just one week after the world sprint champs, all Nelo’s sponsored kayakers came down for a week on the beaches to do the event. hanging out at the race village with World and Olympic champions was interesting, and so good for the sport. the awesome thing is that the day-to-day paddler gets a chance to race alongside the best, lining up next to their heroes. the race itself is short and fast, being only 10km. the surfski paddlers certainly did well, with aussie legend tim Jacobs winning over Ken Wallace. in the Saffa camp, Jasper Mocke came in 5th and myself in 6th. a little disappointing to see the aussies take the podium; but the Sa women did us proud, with Michele Eray winning against a stiff field packed with world champions. the surprise of the day was Sa sprint star Bridgette harley, coming

home 4th in the ladies race and quickly adapting to the bumpy downwind conditions. the next day, Nelo put on an exhibition sprint race in order to promote surfski. the paddlers didn’t even have to leave the beach for the after party, as the biggest beach party in Europe happened after the race, with vanilla ice headlining! the crew then headed down to the algarve and portimao in the south of portugal for “the race of champions”. after a couple of days of training and chilling on the coast, we hit the 25km course. Jasper Mocke dominated, breaking away halfway through the race. i came home second after a strong downwind section, with Sean rice 3rd and richard von Wildemann 6th. Michele Eray continued her domination of women’s surfski with a big win over world marathon champion Beatriz gomes of portugal. With one last road trip across Spain, the Saffa team headed for the Mediterranean Sea. an overnight in denia later, the squad settled into the island of Formentera. the 25km race took place on the north of the island. the wind didn’t blow the way we were hoping, and again the conditions were really hot, with most taking strain on the second lap. Sean rice raced a perfect tactical race, saving energy in the bunch and accelerating on the flat near the finish. i got 2nd again, and was disappointed to not pick up a win on the tour - but came home having seen an amazing piece of the world that i’ll be returning to. richard von Wildemann got 3rd and Michele Eray won the women’s race, sneaking into the top 10 overall. Surfski in Europe is there to stay, so look out for more races in next year’s calendar. it’s worth keeping them in mind when planning your next adventure! www.barrylewin.co.za

don’t forget that whether you’re on holiday or live near the beach, the sand and surf offer a great workout option. the whole family can join in the fun, so pack up the crew, slip into your cozzie, slap on some sun cream, take lots of water to drink, and hit the beach!

Takes place on 8 January 2011 at Loch Athlone dam and is situated 1 km from Bethlehem on the R26 road between Bethlehem and Fouriesburg. Safe surroundings, fresh water out of the mountains, beautiful venue overlooking mountains and the call of fish eagles awaits individuals participating in this event. Your ideal swim in preparation for the 70.3 Iron Man and the Midmar Mile. Jacques 0823705123

your stomach, and then elevate your body, balancing on your elbows and toes. Hold this position for as long as you can, but be sure to keep that body straight, don’t drop your hips and arch your back. Rest and repeat twice more.

running on the Beach Run on the wet sand. It’s softer than a tarred road or concrete surface and therefore easier on your joints, but still makes for a challenging run. Find as flat a surface as possible and wear your running shoes.

squats and lunges

running in soft sand/uP a dune Running in loose sand will work muscles that even experienced legs may not have used in a while. Warm up well and be careful not to stress your ankles and Achilles tendons.

swiM in the ocean An ocean swim is always much tougher than laps in a pool, so don’t push yourself until you’re experienced. Watch out for jellyfish and blue bottles, and be aware of ocean currents. Always swim with a buddy and stay in view of a lifeguard, and be sure to tell them if you are going to swim out far.

Do these barefoot on the beach, but be sure to maintain proper form. Do 2 to 3 sets of each, do them slow and controlled, and really work those glutes, quads and hamstrings.

sPrinting in water Take off your shoes and find an area with water up to your ankles or calves, but without rocks or debris. Water running requires you to lift your knees higher than regular sprints, so you’ll definitely feel the difference in the intensity. Excellent for elevating your heart rate and getting a cardiovascular workout.

duesouth Xterra sa chaMPionshiP If you’re looking for excitement. The DUESOUTH XTERRA presented by REHIDRAT® is an off-road triathlon that takes place at Buffelspoort Dam (North West Province), Grabouw Country Club (Western Cape) and Pezula Private Estate (Knysna). Competitors can either partake individually or in teams of three. New comers to the sport can opt for the less daunting DUESOUTH XTERRA Lite, which is approximately half the distance of the XTERRA Full. The DUESOUTH XTERRA Grabouw presented by REHIDRAT® takes the form of the South African Championship, which forms part of the XTERRA World Tour. Athletes competing at this event stand the chance to qualify for the world championship final in Hawaii later the year.

Push-uPs and Planks Find a fairly flat area of beach and start those push-ups. Start off with as many military style push-ups as you can do, then finish off with as many of the modified version off your knees as you can handle. Next, do a “plank”. Start by lying down on

Let’s not forget the traditional beach games, such as beach volleyball, tossing a Frisbee around and touch rugby. These will all get your heart rate up and keep things festive, fun and full of holiday feel. Get the entire family or friends involved.

BEaCh WORkOUT SafETY TIPS: Whether you’re swimming in the ocean, jogging on the beach, or indulging in a gutripping beach workout, always ensure that you have others around you. Do your ocean swims in a designated swimming area with lifeguards on duty. Don’t leave your personal belongings
