GVWFD Called for Sunny Brooke Wild Fire

On April 16, 2026, at 1430 hours, GVW (Graniteville-VaucluseWarrenville) Fire Department responded to a reported woods/ brush fire on Sunny Brooke Road. South Carolina Forestry was requested to respond with a tractor. On arrival, several fires were found along the railroad right of way. It was later determined the fire was in Eureka’s district, so command was transferred to them.

GVW remained on scene to provide assistance. In all, 271 acres burned, and nine fire departments responded. SC Forestry responded with five tractors and several support personnel, US Forestry responded with a tractor, two engines and several support personnel. Two air tankers also responded and made several water drops on the fire.

Multi-Agency Training in Action – Charleston Area

The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently conducted an aviation and maritime training exercise in the Charleston area, focused on enhancing tactical personnel delivery and recovery from helicopters in both land and marine environments.

The Charleston Fire Department Marine Division was proud to support this effort, participating in helicopter operations and serving as a medical standby vessel during a SWAT training evolution.

Participating agencies were: the United States Air Force Combat Camera Squadron; United States Coast Guard Station Charleston; South Carolina Law Enforcement Division; Charleston County Sheriff’s Office; Charleston Police Department; Charleston Fire Department; North Charleston Police Department; Isle of Palms Police Department; St. Johns Fire and Rescue; the Medical University of South Carolina; and Barrier Island Ocean Rescue.

Logging Equipment / Woods Fire

Colleton County Fire Rescue responded on April 21, 2026, to the 4000 block of Sunrise Road for a reported logging skidder on fire.

Engine 7 located the fully involved piece of logging equipment well off the roadway. Several other pieces of logging equipment were threatened due to a rapidly moving woods fire. Fire apparatus were not able to access the off-road location. The South Carolina Forestry Commission was contacted and sent Forestry firefighters equipped with plows. Crews deployed multiple supply and hand-

lines to contain the fire, prevent further spread to adjacent logging materials and equipment, and provide structural protection to nearby residences. A line was cut to allow better access for firefighters to extinguish the equipment fire, which they quickly accomplished. No homes were damaged during the fire.

Recycling Center Fire

Columbia’s 2nd Shift crews had their work cut out for them on May 1, 2026, when materials at a recycling facility caught fire.

Firefighters arrived at Sunoco Recycling on Idlewild Boulevard shortly after 1240 hours to find smoke coming from the rear of the facility. The interior of the building contained mixed recycling materials stacked from floor to ceiling. Staff at the center used their equipment to dig into the piles and move out materials so crews could apply water.

SUV Fire Stopped Before Extending

The crew of Columbia Fire Department Engine 13, 1st Shift quickly stopped a vehicle fire from spreading to a home on Monticello Road on April 6, 2026. Firefighters arrived shortly after 1300 to find heavy fire coming from the front hood and front seat of an SUV. The fire was extinguished and there were no injuries.

Charleston Hotel HVAC Fire Snuffed

Shortly after 1430 hours on April 10, 2026, the Charleston County Emergency Communication Center received multiple calls reporting a fire on the eighth-floor of the Holiday Inn Express located on Spring Street. Charleston and James Island fire departments, Charleston County EMS, and Charleston Police were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters arrived to smoke venting from the top floor.

A second alarm was requested, sending additional resources from Charleston, James Island, Saint Andrews, Mt. Pleasant, and Johns Island. Crews quickly located and contained the fire to an area near the HVAC unit. The fire was under control in less than 20 minutes, and the second alarm units were canceled.

T&E Coordinator Rick Dunn Receives National Award South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association Training & Education Coordinator Rick Dunn has been selected by the National Fire Protect Association (NFPA) Standards Council as the 2026 recipient of a Special Achievement Award in recognition of his significant contribution to a single project that has enhanced the NFPA’s Standards Development Process.

Through his dedication, expertise, and commitment to the profession, Rick has played an important role in supporting the ongoing development of fire service initiatives and technical standards that impact departments and communities nationwide.

While much of this work happens behind the scenes, the impact is

far-reaching, helping improve firefighter safety, strengthen best practices, and support the continued advancement of the fire service.

“As I reflect on this award, I find myself thinking not only about the ‘ProQual process,’ but more importantly about the outcomes,” Rick stated. “I have always felt you make subsequence change from the inside and not screaming from the sidelines.”

He continued, “The ultimate outcome is a stronger, more relevant Professional Qualifications system, one where training and testing prioritize the needs of the citizens we serve.”

“This recognition from the NFPA shows the kind of respect Rick has earned nationwide, and we’re proud to see somebody from South Carolina making that kind of impact on the national stage,” Executive Director Jamie Helms commented. “The work being done right here in South Carolina is helping shape the fire service across the entire country. Rick’s been a big part of that.”

Important Membership Reminder The South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association’s Member Management System (MMS) is a critical tool for fire departments to maintain accurate and up-to-date records of their members in relation to the Association. Aside from the administrative tasks performed in the MMS required annually for departments to be members, roster management is absolutely critical in ensuring your firefighters receive the full extent of their benefits.

A significant number of members are listed in the MMS as having fees unpaid. We strongly encourage fire chiefs and roster managers to take a moment to verify that all members of your department who are eligible for benefits have their membership fees marked as paid and up to date in the database.

These benefits are critical, and no one wants a firefighter to be ineligible for a benefit—especially in the tragic event of a firefighter death—simply because of inaccurate roster information. Take care of your people by making sure they will receive the benefits they deserve.

Please act now to ensure your members are covered. A few minutes of verification today can make all the difference tomorrow.

Individuals can confirm their membership status by logging into the MMS and navigating to the “My Departments” tab. If the “Pays Dues” column says “NO,” please talk to your fire chief.

Applications Open for Leadership Institute Applications for the South Carolina State Firefighters’ Association’s Leadership Institute 2026-2027 opened June 1, 2026.

The year-long leadership development and educational program is set in an executive-level environment with an emphasis on open communication and group project-based skills. Leadership Institute is offered to individuals to improve and develop fire service leadership at the state level through networking and education pertaining to the many facets of the fire service profession.

“Leadership Institute provides those up-and-coming stars… the opportunity to go out and experience every aspect of the South Carolina fire service,” said Leadership Institute alumni, former Association Executive Director, and current Anderson City Fire Chief Charlie King.

“We’re looking for individuals who have the potential to make an impact on the fire service in their communities, not so much on the folks who have a wall full of ribbons and plaques.”

Participants are expected to receive a working knowledge of the numerous and varied aspects and intricacies of the South Carolina fire service outside of their previous background and experience through exposure to current events and a variety of department experiences from around the state.

Bluffton Township Fire District Chief David Hindman is a 2014 graduate of the Leadership Institute and says the program exposed him to how the Association supports its members, regardless of department size or resources available.

“Leadership Institute gave us the opportunity to see the Association and the fire service in South Carolina is trying to work together for a common goal,” Hindman said. “You realize very quickly how fortunate some areas of the state are with what they have as opposed to other areas of the state and you recognize that the Association is trying to overcome those gaps and provide resources for everybody in the state and opportunities for everybody in the state.”

The ideal Leadership Institute participant is a person who has a strong desire for honing their individual leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities beyond typical management skill training and has exhibited prior leadership skills in local or state efforts. Participants will not be judged on the criteria of rank or pay status but instead on their potential to impact future leadership for the Firefighters’ Association and South Carolina fire service.

Dog Saved from Tokeena Road House Fire

10-acre Woods Fire on Bent Gate Lane

At 1251 hours, on March 26, 2026, Seneca Fire B-Shift was dispatched to assist Crossroads Fire with a structure fire on Tokeena Road with possible entrapment. Engine 74, Battalion 7 and Chief 701 responded. Battalion 7 arrived with Engine 13 to fire in a small home. Chief 701 took a pre-connected line from Engine 13 and started knocking down the fire as Battalion 7 went to the rear of the home and started a quick search. Upon entering, Captain Haney encountered the dog and safely exited the home. Engine 74 extinguished the rest of the fire with help from mutual aid crews.

The homeowner wasn’t home at the time of the fire. Great work by all involved. Clyde the Great Dane, who was uninjured, was extremely happy and I believe he and Captain Haney now have a great friendship.

A fast-moving woods fire destroyed approximately 10 acres of young pines at the corner of Sunrise Road (SC Highway 217) and Bent Gate Lane on March 29, 2026 at 1630 hours. Engine 7 arrived to find the large fire and requested additional stations and Forestry for assistance. Firefighters protected structures in the area, while the Forestry tractor cut fire lines around the fire. Dry conditions, low humidity and high winds spread the flames. Fire Rescue Units were on the scene for three hours.

Shopping Center Fire in City of Beaufort

The City of Beaufort Port Royal Fire Department received multiple calls reporting a large plume of smoke behind Beaufort Plaza Shopping Center.

Johns Island Fire Displaces 5

The Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call on April 26, 2026, at 1946 hours, reporting a residential structure fire in the 3000 block of Gatetree Road on Johns Island. Charleston, Johns Island, James Island, Charleston County EMS and Charleston PD were dispatched and arrived to fire on the side of a single-story home, advancing into the attic. The occupants confirmed everyone was out, and firefighters proceeded to quickly extinguish the fire while conducting a search; a parrot was safely removed from the home. The fire damage was primarily contained to the exterior of the home and extended into the room over the garage and the attic, with the remainder of the home sustaining smoke damage. Two adults, three children, and one parrot were displaced, and the Red Cross was requested.

Exterior Fight on Kelly Mill Road

Columbia 2nd Shift crews arrived at a large house fire on Kelly Mill Road on May 16, 2026. Fire was showing through the roof and much of the home was involved when Engine 33 arrived shortly before 1700 hours. No occupants were in the home. One resident on scene was taken to the hospital by Richland County EMS but later released. Crews fought the fire from outside the home due to the extent of the fire involvement, with multiple units staged and supplying water from the roadway.

Outdoor Burning Still an Issue for Burton FD

Despite the South Carolina Forestry Commission’s state wide burning ban for outdoor burning, responding to outdoor fires continues to be an issue for the Burton Fire District.

Since the implementation of the burning ban on the morning of April 17, 2026, the Burton Fire District has responded to five outdoor fires, two of which spread, and one of which damaged property.

Just after 1700 hours, Burton fire units traveling on Joe Frazier Road noticed smoke in the area. Upon investigation, the crew located and was able to contain and extinguish a trash fire as it was spreading into the tree line.

On April 19 just before 1630, Burton crews responded to an illegal burn in which a neighbor’s outdoor burning spread and damaged a fence.

On April 14 just prior to the state burning ban, Burton firefighters responded to a reported brush fire that had spread to include five vehicles and was threatening a structure. The fire was caused by outdoor burning that was not being monitored. SC Forestry had to assist in extinguishing the fire.

In 2025, the Burton Fire District responded to 168 outdoor fires, 79 percent of which were trash fires or other fires in violation of the Beaufort County Ordinance. Six of those fires spread and damaged structures. So far in 2026, Burton firefighters have responded to 22 trash fires or other illegal outdoor fires. No structures have been damaged yet.

Hertford Drive Shed Destroyed

by Unattended Burn

Columbia 1st Shift crews in Battalion 2 were called out to Hertford Drive on the morning of May 15, 2026, for fire which tore through a shed. Firefighters arrived shortly after 1030 hours to find the shed fully involved with two nearby properties being threatened.

Crews were able to quickly contain the fire and keep it from spreading. No one was injured but the shed was left a total loss. The cause of the fire was due to unattended outdoor burning.

House Fire, Brush-Trash Fires, and Medical Emergencies Keep Burton Busy

As of 1900 on April 27, 2026, the Burton Fire District has responded to over 16 emergency calls including a house fire, large brush fire, two trash fires and a critical medical emergency. Just past 0630 hours, Burton, MCAS, and Sheldon firefighters responded to a large brush fire on Island Tank Road in Burton. Firefighters arrived to find a large but slow-moving brush fire along a ditch behind some homes. It took over 90 minutes and 6000 gallons of water to extinguish. The fire is believed to have been caused by outdoor burning that was not completely extinguished the evening prior. Just past 1200 and just past 1700, Burton firefighters extinguished two trash fires. Just before 1530, Burton firefighters and Beaufort County EMS responded to the Grays Hill boat landing on Clarendon Road after a PWC exploded causing the teenage operator serious injuries. Again, just after 1700, Burton and MCAS firefighters, along with Beaufort County EMS and Sheriff’s Office, responded to a house fire at the Laurel Village Mobile Home Park.

The fire was caused by unattended cooking. The home had no working smoke alarms. Burton firefighters installed two smoke alarms before leaving.

Charleston Church Kitchen Fire Motel Fire Quickly Extinguished

The Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communication Center received reports of a possible commercial structure fire in the 1300 block of Rutledge Avenue just after 1900 hours.

Charleston, North Charleston and Mt. Pleasant fire departments, Charleston County EMS, and Charleston Police responded to the scene. Emergency personnel arrived within three minutes from the time of dispatch and reported smoke venting from a single-story church. Firefighters worked to quickly enter the building and attack the fire while simultaneously performing search operations.

Search efforts confirmed the building was unoccupied and the fire was declared under control in less than 25 minutes. Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and determined the fire originated within the kitchen area. No injuries were reported during the incident.

On April 19, 2026, the Charleston County Consolidated Emergency Communication Center received multiple 911 calls just before 1430 hours reporting a fire at the West Ashley Inn, on Savannah Highway.

Charleston and Saint Andrews fire departments, Charleston County EMS, and Charleston PD responded.

Emergency personnel arrived within three minutes from the time of dispatch and reported smoke and fire venting from a first-floor unit of the two-story motel. Firefighters immediately worked to extinguish the fire and search the rooms in the immediate area while members of CPD initiated evacuations throughout the building. Multiple pets were evacuated by firefighters during the search efforts, all occupants safely exited the structure. The initial fire was knocked down within six minutes of arrival and the incident was declared under control in less than twenty minutes.

Investigators from the Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene to review the incident. Investigators determined the fire was caused by a candle in the bathroom, igniting nearby combustibles. The occupant of the unit discovered the fire, exited, and called 911. The building is not equipped with a fire sprinkler system and the smoke alarms within the unit were missing at the time of the incident.

A motel staff member was assisting with the evacuation of occupants and was subsequently transported by EMS due to smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported at this time.

Burton House and Brush Fires, One Transported

In the early morning on April 8, 2026, despite the South Carolina Forestry Red Flag Fire Alert, the Burton Fire District responded to three back-to-back fires, two brush fires and a house fire, that resulted in damages and one adult displaced and transported. The first brush fire was dispatched at 0440 hours for Broad River Boulevard and Robert Smalls Parkway. The 911 caller stated that there was a brush fire within 20 feet of a home. Firefighters arrived to an illegal outdoor yard fire comprised of leaves and limbs. The fire was quickly extinguished without damages or injuries. As firefighters were clearing from this fire, at 0506, another brush fire was reported in the Forest Fields community.

The 911 caller stated that there was a fire in the woods across the street from their home and spreading. Burton firefighters arrived to find an approximate five-to-six-acre fire. SC Forestry was notified and dispatched a bulldozer to the scene to contain the fire. Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department also responded to assist. Firefighters were on scene for over 90 minutes before the fire was under control.

At 0509, a house fire was reported on River Hill Road after the 911 caller stated that her neighbor’s house, 50 feet from hers, was on fire.

Burton and MCAS Beaufort Fire and Emergency Services, along with Beaufort County EMS and Sheriff’s Office, responded and found smoke coming from a single-story home. Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and confined damages to the kitchen area; however, the home suffered heat and smoke damages throughout, displacing one adult male. The resident was transported to the hospital by EMS as a precaution. Firefighters were on scene for over two hours.

Myrtle Beach Car Fire

Engine Company 5 handled a vehicle fire on the morning of May 1, 2026, in the 9500 block of Lake Drive. No injuries were reported.

Emergency Crews Assist Driver After Vehicle Strikes a Home

Simpsonville Car vs Building

On the morning of March 31, 2026, Simpsonville B shift crews responded to a car-versus-building in downtown Simpsonville. The building sustained moderate damage and there were no reported injuries.

On May 14th, the Burton Fire District and Beaufort County EMS and Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of a home that was struck by a vehicle. At 1515 hours, emergency crews responded to a reported vehicle collision involving a vehicle striking a home on Riley Rd. Crews arrived on scene to find a vehicle, with the driver still inside, that had left the roadway, drove through a fence and struck the corner of a mobile home. No one was in the home at the time and it is unknown if the home is occupied.

Firefighters and EMS personnel helped remove the driver who appeared uninjured, but was still transported by EMS to the hospital as a precaution. It is believed the driver may have had a medical emergency that resulted in the collision.

The Burton Fire District has responded to 73 vehicle collisions so far in 2026.

Overturn Tractor Trailer HazMat On April 21, 2026, at 1149 hours., the Flint Hill Fire Department was notified

by York County Public Safety Communications of a crash at the intersection of Carowinds Boulevard and Lakemount Boulevard, while crews were operating at a separate structure fire on Holloway Drive. Fort Mill Fire Department along with Tega Cay Fire Department responded while clearing from the structure fire. Tega Cay Engine 1 arrived to find a tractor-trailer overturned and carrying 11 totes, each with a capacity of 250 gallons of paint. Under the command of Flint Hill Chief Todd Wisner, firefighters determined approximately 500 gallons of paint had leaked from compromised containers. Fire crews deployed a precautionary hoseline while firefighters established diking and damming. Additional agencies, including York County Emergency Management and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services, responded to assist. Flint Hill remained on scene for approximately two hours before transferring control of the incident to York County Emergency Management.

Lugoff Fire-Rescue to Hold Free Community Lifesaver Training

Lugoff Fire-Rescue (LF-R) is excited to announce an opportunity for our community to get free training in the following topics: Bleeding control (Stop the Bleed); Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); LifeVac; and Narcan.

LF-R will hold two remaining sessions in 2026 at the Lugoff Fire Department Headquarters located at 892 Highway 1 South, Lugoff, SC. Training Sessions will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026 from 9 a.m. to noon and Saturday, October 17, 2026, 9 a.m. to noon.

MVA with Entrapment on SC 303

Two people were injured, one seriously, in a head-on collision in the 5100 block of Green Pond Highway (SC Highway 303) south of Possum Corner Road on May 12, 2026, at 0638 hours. A sedan collided head-on with a utility truck, trapping the driver of the sedan.

The driver of the pickup received non-life-threatening injuries and was able to exit the vehicle. The driver of the sedan suffered multiple traumatic injuries. Neither driver was wearing a seatbelt.

Firefighter-Paramedics treated both patients at the scene and used hydraulic tools to extricate the sedan’s driver by removing the driver’s side doors and the B post. The driver was transported emergent to the Trauma Center at HCA Trident Hospital in North Charleston by Fire-Rescue Medic 6.

Flint Hill’s David Jennings Retires After 50 Years

On March 22, 2026, seven members of the Graniteville-VaucluseWarrenville (GVW) Fire Department successfully completed an intensive 48-hour Hazardous Materials Technician course, further strengthening the department’s operational readiness and emergency response capabilities. Throughout the course, participants received advanced instruction in identifying hazardous substances, implementing effective response strategies, and mitigating incidents involving dangerous materials. The training emphasized both safety and technical proficiency, ensuring members are wellequipped to handle complex hazardous materials scenarios. We proudly congratulate these members on their accomplishment and commend their dedication to ongoing education and service to the community.

On April 17, 2026, after an incredible 50 years of dedicated service, Chief David Jennings of the Flint Hill Fire Department signed off the air for one last time and began a well-deserved retirement.

Members of Flint Hill Fire Department, along with Chief Jenning’s family and friends, gathered to honor him as he officially concluded his service with Flint Hill.

Chief Jennings began his fire service journey on January 1, 1971, dedicating his life to protecting the citizens of York County, South Carolina. He rose through the ranks, serving as Assistant Chief from 1980 to 1997, before assuming the role of Chief of Department on January 1, 1998, a position he held with distinction for 28 years.

Throughout his career, Chief Jennings didn’t just serve — he helped shape the future of the fire service in York County. David served as the President of the York County Fire Chiefs Association from 2001–2004 and again from 2019–2022. He led the Flint Hill Fire Department through critical transformations including transitioning from an all-volunteer department to a combination department, to ultimately going to a fully-career fire department in 2021. His leadership, commitment, and unwavering dedication to public safety have left a legacy that will be felt for generations.

We extend our deepest gratitude and best wishes to Chief Jennings as he begins his well-earned retirement.

Bluffton Township Fire District Welcomes District 5 Appointee Rick Krob

The Bluffton Township Fire District Board of Commissioners swore in District 5 Representative Rick Krob during its regular monthly meeting on May 19, 2026. Krob was nominated and approved by Beaufort County Council during its April 20 meeting. County Council voted unanimously to appoint him to a four-year term ending in April 2030.

Krob brings 38 years of fire service experience to the board. He retired from Burton Fire District in April 2017 as a lieutenant after more than 25 years of service, during which he was actively involved in technical rescue, urban search and rescue operations, and firefighter training. He was a member of the state Urban Search and Rescue Team, SCTF-1, including its first deployment to Hurricane Katrina.

Since 2019, Krob has served with the 165th Airlift Wing Fire and Emergency Services in Savannah, Georgia, where he was promoted to Assistant Chief of Training in 2025. He began his firefighting career as a volunteer with the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department in 1989, earning Volunteer Firefighter Rookie of the Year honors that same year.

In addition to his fire service career, Krob has owned and operated Palmetto Bush Hoggin, LLC since 2010. He is a graduate of the South Carolina Firefighters Association Leadership Institute and Leadership Beaufort, and holds IFSAC certifications as a Fire Instructor III, Fire Officer IV, and Fire Inspector III. Krob has been a Beaufort County resident since 1986.

241 SC Fire Departments Receive Fire Safe South Carolina Community Designation Fire Safe South Carolina congratulates 241 South Carolina fire departments for receiving the 2025 Fire Safe South Carolina Community Designation. The number of designated departments represents nearly a 17 percent increase from last year and marks the first time in the program’s history that all 46 counties in South Carolina are represented.

Across the state, fire departments are demonstrating that strong community risk reduction programs can make communities safer while strengthening the fire service mission. Departments earning this designation promote consistent fire and life safety education, build partnerships within their communities, and use data collected from calls for service to better understand and reduce local risks.

Departments will be formally recognized during a June 12 award ceremony at the 2026 Fire-Rescue Conference in Myrtle Beach. The ceremony begins at 1000 hours.

“Fire departments across South Carolina are demonstrating through risk reduction that prevention and education are just as important as emergency response,” said South Carolina State Fire Marshal Jonathan Jones. “Through Fire Safe South Carolina, these departments are taking proactive steps to reduce risks to their citizens and protect their communities. Our focus in 2026 is reducing the number of home fire fatalities in our state, and the work being done through this program plays a key role in achieving that goal.”

Launched in 2017, Fire Safe South Carolina is a partnership between the SC State Firefighters’ Association, the SC State Association of Fire Chiefs, the SC Fire Marshals Association, the SC Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators, and SC State Fire.

Choosing the Best Build Option

The truth is, most fire departments are so effective at managing their resources that by the time a project is considered, it’s no longer a want, it’s long past a need. The challenge then becomes navigating the process of bringing that facility to life. Depending on your jurisdiction, this can mean working through North Carolina General Statutes or specific district bylaws, which can quickly become overwhelming.

Understanding and exploring your options early is critical and can significantly impact both quality and cost.

Too often, departments follow the traditional design-bid-build route.

Many chiefs have found themselves with a complete set of beautifully designed plans, only to discover that the bids come in far above budget, leaving the project stalled or abandoned. Fortunately, North Carolina begins with a Request for Qualifications, allowing departments to select law provides alternative delivery methods for public entities that help a qualified design-build team. From there, the department and builder prevent this exact situation. work together throughout the design phase, with real-time cost analysis guiding decisions. This ensures the project stays within budget and eliminates the need for costly redesigns. Plans are developed once, with full awareness of costs, giving departments greater control and confidence from start to finish.

The bottom line is simple: there are better options available than the traditional design-bid-build approach. Both design-build and CMAR offer greater cost control, improved communication, and a more efficient path to completion. As a design-builder with numerous repeat clients, D. R. Trends that are Impacting Fire Station Design

By Ken Newell AIA, LEED AP BD+C www.fire-station.com If you have spent time in the Fire & Rescue industry, you have likely seen many trends come and go. While some fade quickly, others prove valuable and reshape how fire stations are designed. Over five decades, several key trends have had a lasting impact, reflecting both advances in firefighting practices and a deeper understanding of firefighter health, safety, and operational needs.

One of the most significant developments is the focus on controlling dangerous contaminants. Studies have shown that firefighters face a substantially higher cancer risk due to repeated exposure to carcinogens encountered on fire grounds. These contaminants are often carried back to the station on personnel, protective gear, and apparatus, creating ongoing exposure risks. As a result, modern station design emphasizes a three-zone approach: Hot (dirty), Transition, and Cold (clean). Proper separation between these zones is critical. Transition areas now commonly include decontamination spaces, dedicated PPE storage, and separate “dirty” restrooms and showers to prevent contaminants from spreading into living and administrative areas. Many of the critical Hotzone Principals have been codified in the recently released NFPA 1585 Another major shift involves gender accommodations. As more women enter the profession, traditional bunkroom designs have become less effective. Large, shared sleeping areas or gender-separated bunkrooms often lead to inefficiencies due to changing personnel ratios.

Increasingly, departments are adopting individual sleeping rooms, which provide privacy, flexibility, and improved rest for all firefighters regardless of gender.

Training integration within stations has also evolved. While large training centers remain valuable, many departments now incorporate

training features directly into station design. Elements such as training towers, pump-test pits, and rope rescue areas can be added at relatively low cost. Additionally, multipurpose training rooms often double as community spaces, enhancing both operational readiness and public engagement.

The transition of volunteer departments to combination or fully career staffing models has further influenced design. This shift increases the need for expanded living spaces, including sleeping quarters, kitchens, and hygiene facilities. Forward-thinking designs often anticipate future growth by incorporating flexible bunking arrangements.

Differences between volunteer and career staff may also affect building layout, circulation, and even parking and entry configurations.

Co-location with other public safety agencies has become more common as construction costs rise. Sharing facilities with EMS, law enforcement, or other municipal departments can significantly reduce expenses and maximize resources. Modern designs allow for shared infrastructure while maintaining operational independence, including separate entrances, secure areas, and independent building systems. In some cases, temporary co-location arrangements can also provide costeffective future expansion opportunities.

Finally, there is a growing emphasis on designing stations that reflect their communities. Unlike older stations that often ignored local context, newer facilities are designed to complement surrounding architecture and neighborhood character. This approach fosters community pride and strengthens the station’s role as a civic asset.

These trends demonstrate how fire station design continues to evolve in response to changing needs. By prioritizing health, flexibility, efficiency, and community integration, today’s stations are better equipped to serve both firefighters and the public—now and into the future.

Bluffton Township Fire District Breaks Ground on Station 39

The Bluffton Township Fire District (BTFD) broke ground Tuesday May 12, 2026, on Fire Station 39, its 10th fire station, located at 301 Sun City Boulevard in Okatie. The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the district as it expands emergency response capacity to keep pace with one of South Carolina's fastest-growing areas.

Station 39 will house an engine company staffed by BTFD firefighters as well as a Beaufort County EMS ambulance, bringing co-located fire and EMS resources to the area. The $5.7 million capital improvement project is being led by Beaufort County and funded through the county’s 2017 General Obligations Bond. Construction is being performed by Fraser Construction.

“Station 39 has been a long time coming,” said Fire Chief David Hindman. “Seeing it finally become real, with shovels in the ground and the people who are making it happen all in one place, was something worth celebrating. We are ready to get started.”

The groundbreaking was attended by district leadership including Deputy Chiefs Derek Church and Adam Corn, along with Fire Commission Board members Natalie Majorkiewicz, Bill Rickett and

Scott will be responsible for Spartan apparatus sales in the State of South Carolina. Most recently, Scott was Fire Chief of the City of Jackson Trail, Georgia, a community outside of Atlanta. Scott has many years of distinguished experience in emergency services both in leadership and operations. He has been dedicated to ensuring that frontline personnel are equipped with safe, effective, mission-ready equipment and emergency vehicles.

Known for a practical, detail-oriented approach, Scott worked closely with manufacturers, engineers, and municipal stakeholders to translate operational needs into high-performing apparatus solutions. His leadership experience spans strategic planning, personnel development, fleet operations, and resource management, with a consistent focus on safety, efficiency, and innovation.

Glenn Williams. Beaufort County was represented by County Administrator Michael Moore, Deputy County Administrator Nicole Wood, and County Council members Paula Brown, Logan Cunningham, Joe Passiment, and Ana Maria Tabernik. Beaufort County EMS Director Donna Ownby, Deputy Director Howell Youmans and Senior Crew Chief Kevin Peeples also participated, along with Jay Fraser of Fraser Construction.

BTFD currently serves approximately 75,000 residents across 246 square miles of southern Beaufort County from nine stations. Station 39 will add coverage capacity within Sun City as well as in the Lawton Station, Cypress Ridge, and Hampton Lake areas. It is expected to improve response times for residents in the western part of the district.

BTFD holds accreditation from the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) through the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE), a status it has held since 2020 and renewed through 2030, making it one of a small number of fire agencies in South Carolina to hold that distinction.

Looking Back

Myrtle Beach’s 1st True Firehouse The year 1950 kicked off strong with the construction of our first true firehouse, located on 10th Avenue North. This building served as the Fire Station, Police Station and the City Jail. For over 10 years, these three city functions shared one common roof. Later that year, during the July 4th Holiday, there was a large fire at the Atlantic View Hotel, and thousands of people watched Myrtle Beach fireman spring into action.

The early fifties is also when we transitioned from volunteer to combination department. As early as 1950, there were two members working 24/24 hour shifts.

In 1953, the construction of Fire Station 2 was completed on the north side of the city. It was a small two-bay firehouse.

By 1954, the department had four paid fireman and the fleet had grown to include six fire apparatus; four engines and two trucks. The first firetruck was still around and being used as an equipment truck. Other new equipment was also obtained, such as two 40-foot aluminum extension ladders, various nozzles and a 1500-volt power unit.

In 1955, Fire Chief O.C. Callaway passed away and was succeeded by his son, Assistant Chief James Callaway. Chief J.M. Callaway served eight years until his departure in 1963 to work at the Air Force base. Ken Trousdell succeeded James and was Chief until 1967, when he retired with 15 years of service to the city. At this time, Fernie Faulk was sworn in as the new Chief.

In the early 60s the Myrtle Beach Rescue Squad was formed. The Squad was a volunteer effort and was funded by donations. All non-fire related calls were handled through the Squad, predominately medical calls. Over time, the squad

began performing other specialties such as water rescues, vehicle extrications and rope rescues.

Also in the early 60s, space at the firehouse/police station was becoming cramped and a new structure was built solely for fire department use, located immediately northwest of the original building. It had a cost of $60,000, was equipped with electrical hose dryers and air conditioned sleeping quarters for six fireman. The police department and jail were then able to occupy the whole original structure.

In 1964, the department took possession of two American LaFrance fire trucks, continuing to provide the firefighters with the most recent improvements in fire apparatus.

Again, in the mid-60s, more space was needed and two additional bays were built onto the firehouse. This building remained as Fire Station 1, serving the city for over 30 years!

We are grateful for the work of our call takers, dispatchers and all the members of the Columbia-Richland 911 Communications Center. We count on them to receive and pass along crucial information to our firefighters for every call. To show our appreciation Fire Chief Jenkins treated the 911 staff to a hot pizza lunch.

After more than 28 years of dedicated service, Captain Joseph Dembeck has retired from the Bluffton Township Fire District.

Dembeck began his fire service career in 1997 as a volunteer before being hired full-time in 1998. Early in his career, he was recognized as Rookie of the Year in 1999 and Firefighter of the Year in 2000 and again in 2006. He earned his National Registry EMT/Paramedic certification in September 2002, and was promoted to Captain oi July 2010.

In that role, he served as a company officer. Throughout his career, he was known for his steady leadership, strong work ethic and commitment to those he served alongside. Dembeck was honored during a retirement ceremony following his final shift. Family, friends, current firefighters and former colleagues attended to recognize his decades of service and the relationships he built throughout his career. The Bluffton Township Fire District thanks Captain Dembeck for his years of service and dedication and wishes him the very best in his retirement.
