Temporary Road Closure Melton Road, Syston Due to essential highway works associated with the development on Millstone Lane, Queniborough which borders Syston, it will be necessary to close a short section of Melton Road, adjacent to the Leisure Centre and Wreake Valley Academy Field, for up to six weeks from 15th July 2017.

During this time, the parking bays adjacent to the Town Square shopping centre on Melton Road will be suspended for a length of 20 metres.

The agreed diversion route for through traffic is along Barkby Road, Syston.

Briefly, the diversion route is from the roundabout at High Street, Syston along Barkby Road to the traffic lights at the junction with Queniborough Road, turn left along this road which becomes Barkby Road in Queniborough. Straight on at the crossroads, Queniborough to the large roundabout with Melton Road and the Syston Bypass. Then when travelling

Access for homes and businesses ie Branston’s Garage, Queniborough will only be from Syston Road, Queniborough.

For homes on Millstone Lane, it will be via Brighton Avenue, Syston.

St Peter and St Paul’s Church News Syston Parish Church Ladies Friendship Circle On May 22nd we were at Roots Farm Shop in Barkby for Afternoon Tea. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and we arrived to be greeted by the attractive tables laden with a tempting array of sandwiches and a great choice of delicious cakes. After tea, a raffle was drawn for several prizes and one lucky lady won the beautiful floral arrangement which had been on a side table and was donated by Roots Farm Shop.

Before leaving, several ladies visited the farm shop, others were interested to see the Alpacas and

the newly arrived baby ducklings.

A lovely way to spend a Summer afternoon.

On Saturday 10th June the Ladies Friendship Circle held their annual Strawberry Tea event.

This year it was generously hosted by Janet and Brian Burgin. They were blessed by dry, quite warm if somewhat blustery weather!

Apart from enjoying the wonderful garden, visitors were able to purchase gifts from a table full of donated items, also some skilfully crafted homemade greetings cards and a wide selection of cakes.

And, of course there were the strawberry teas, a bowlful of strawberries and cream and a slice of cake and refreshing cup of tea, all of which were absolutely delicious!

Members of the group worked very hard to keep the visitors happy while they enjoyed their tea and the gardens.

The reward for this endeavour was a total of £365.40 to go towards the Mablethorpe Children’s Home - the group’s charity for this year.

Eleven30 The service on the first Sunday in July will be the last until September for this service. At 11.30am there will be the usual service of worship, songs, prayers and craft activities but, this time, it will be followed by a shared lunch.

Lost and Found Tracking down misplaced pensions will make it easier to plan your retirement, but moving them into a single pot could leave you better off.

These days, most of us change jobs quite often. In fact, on average, people will work for at least six different companies over a lifetime, suggesting that the traditional idea of a ‘job for life’ is a thing of the past (The Association of Accounting Technicians, November 2015). Moving from employer to employer sometimes means moving from pension scheme to pension scheme. It’s quite common for people to build up a collection of different pension pots, making it difficult to keep track.

A study by Aegon found that, of the 62% of people who have multiple pensions, more than a fifth (21%) have lost track of one or all of them. That equates to more than six million people who have misplaced some of their pension pots.

Indeed, 39% of those with multiple pensions don’t know the total value of their retirement savings (Aegon, October 2016) “Today people have diverse careers, often involving multiple jobs with different companies,” says Kate Smith, Head of

Pensions at Aegon. “As a result, a majority of people now have more than one pension, but it’s a concern to find that 21% of these people have lost track of some of their savings.”

It’s very hard to plan your retirement without a full view of your savings and it’s important everyone has a clear idea of how much their pension is worth, and what their State Pension entitlement is likely to be.

Tracking down a lost pension can be as simple as making sure any old pension providers have a current address for you.

You should write to the pension company, tell them your new address and ask for a statement. If you’re trying to track down a lost workplace pension, you could try contacting the company you used to work for.

However, you may find that your old employer doesn’t exist anymore, or you’re trying to trace an old personal pension and you don’t have any contact details. In this case, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has a pension tracing service that can help you find a lost or forgotten pension that you built up many years ago.

Under One Roof Once you have found all your different pension pots, it might be a good idea to think about consolidating them. That simply means bringing all your separate pots together, so that all your pension savings are in one place. There can be

benefits to consolidation, as many olderstyle pensions are unlikely to offer access to the new range of pension freedoms. It could also be a good idea to consolidate if one or more pension pot has an inappropriate level of equity exposure or is languishing in a poorly performing fund.

Consolidating your pension pots can make it easier to review how your investments are performing and give you a good idea of how much income you will have in retirement. However, it will not be suitable or even available to everyone and any decision to consolidate should not be taken lightly. It is possible that you would lose valuable and sometimes guaranteed benefits if you were to transfer out of some pension schemes. This is an extremely complex area and it is essential that professional advice is taken to understand fully the benefits and risks before considering a transfer.

With so many people losing track of a pension, it’s perhaps not surprising that a lot people are interested in consolidation even if they have to track down a pension first. However, it’s important people take time to understand the pros and cons of consolidation and are clear on whether it’s right for them. This month in the garden This is our monthly gardening feature by our own local expert and regular panellist on “Down to Earth”. stopped flowering and this left me with just the deep purple ones which needed livening up. What is remarkable about this is its bright gold variegated foliage that really compliments the light purple flowers. So on Bob Armstrong’s advice I purchased three and these are now planted to liven up the dark Viola’s.

I did mention in last month’s article how the dry spring had affected the flowering of many of my Rhododendrons.

However, I have Rhododendron Nakahari growing in my rockery and this Japanese mountainside dwarf shrub only grows six inches (9cm) in height by 18 inches (45cm) in diameter. During late May I received a parcel from Thompson and Morgan which contained two plants of their newly introduced Hibiscus ‘Petit Orange’ see picture below. This is a superb conservatory, or even house plant that can be stood out in the garden from June until September.

It is compact, has dark green foliage and brilliant orange flowers with a dark reddishbrown eye.

This will flower continuously from late May until October and as it flowers on its new wood it can be pruned hard back during March. This looks a great improvement on the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis that exists in my conservatory, being more compact and flowering more freely.

Hibiscus ‘Petit Orange’ is a hybrid from a semi-tropical plant and will need treating as such; it is frost tender, will need watering during the growing season and feeding with tomato fertiliser at monthly intervals from April to August.

During the first week in March I planted the new ‘Jazzy’ potato in 50 litre tree tubs in my cold greenhouse and this early start allowed me to lift twenty small new potatoes during the first week in June. Vi steamed these for fifteen minutes and they are delicious. ‘Jazzy; is also suitable to use in salads. I shall have to wait until we get to the last of my three tubs to see if I can get 35 tubers for each one that I planted.

This year I have used bottomless pots instead of grow bags in which to plant my tomatoes, but when using bottomless pots you will need to have an area of soil in the greenhouse and work plenty of compost and slow release fertiliser into the soil before you push the bottomless pots onto it to keep them steady. This year I have grown tomato ‘Aperitif’ that is similar to ‘Sweet Million’ and they are now flowering and setting fruit.

being filled with early summer flowers including delphinium, stocks, pendulous grasses, and peony. Hosta and eucalyptus were joined by peony leaves and the off-cut stems of the stocks as the foliages.

A much hotter theme followed, this being shades of red, orange, purple and yellow, with bold sunflowers, roses and hypericum berries forming twin horizontal designs set on top of coordinating wooden vases. Red foliage of photinia ‘Red Robin’ harmonized with the darker shades in the containers, as did the deep purple heuchera. Green and yellow foliages added zing via hosta, euonymus, and aucuba japonica.

From hot, we went to exotic via a contemporary design in blue and orange set into and against a backdrop of wreath rings made from twisted vines. Declan’s Diary

April and May were very quiet months for Declan and I, as the van was off the road so his driving lessons were on hold and I had to have surgery, so was housebound for a while. However, June has been fantastic with a trip to Wembley stadium to watch the Capital Summertime ball, which had some of Declan's favourite artists performing including Bruno Mars and Charlie Puth, who sang the song 'See you again' in memory of Paul Walker from the 'Fast and Furious' films.

Declan is a petrol head as anyone that knows him is very aware of, as cars are his favourite topic of conversation.

When Paul Walker, one of the stars from the films tragically died in a car accident Declan was devastated and felt very moved when he heard 'See you again', which is a song about losing someone you love and that you will one day be reunited.

Declan has stated that he would like this to be played at his funeral. When he said this, it took my breath away as he very rarely talks about his condition let alone his prognosis, so when Charlie Puth played this at the Summertime ball, I felt quite emotional as I looked over at Declan who was

quietly singing along to the song with the sunlight coming through the stadium onto him. I feel so blessed that the Doctor’s life expectancy of eighteen years for Declan is incorrect and that he is currently more 'alive' than ever.

As Declan's driving has been put on hold, he decided he wanted to buy an MX5, so that along with my brother, who is a mechanic, it can be a project car. As it is a soft top, I can hoist Declan into it, although he can only go for a drive in it as there is nowhere to put his wheelchair, not even his manual chair. So after a few months of looking and Declan saving, he found 'his' car, and we travelled to Rugby to pick it up. On the way back he welled up and said, "I never thought I would own a car, let alone a sports car, I am so happy".

Library Donation Is Helping to Create Dementia Friendly Community

Loughborough and Syston Libraries.

Karon Cullen, Library Assistant, was delighted to accept the book Confidence to Care, as it provides useful information for local people and their loved ones who are living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.

It will be a welcome addition to the collection and one that is much appreciated.

The book, published by Home Instead, offers readers a combination of personal stories and practical advice. Its primary focus is on the effective prevention and management of certain memory and behaviour symptoms, including refusal, aggression, delusions and wandering, which family carers often need help with.

Each chapter begins with a real life example and goes on to explain why the behaviour happens, suggestions for care approaches and prevention tips.

Ladies Charity Lunch with Special Guest

Friends of St Peter and St Paul's put on a Special Ladies’ Lunchon on Tuesday 30th May to raise funds for their building project, which is to install two disabled toilets in a small extension to the north of the church.

The venue was Beedles Lake Golf Club at East Goscote where a two course lunch was served to 55 ladies who came from all over Leicestershire. As well as many local ladies, a group of ten came from Earl Shilton, and eight from Birstall! On arrival, the ladies could entertain themselves by looking at a wonderful display of Vintage children’s clothing from the whole of the 20th century, or choose a new brooch, necklace or bag from a stall that was being run by one of the ‘Friends.’

The organisers had invited a special guest to this lunch; Chris Allen, owner of the Secret Garden florist’s in Syston. Chris has always been most helpful to the parish church; putting up posters in the shop and even selling tickets for events such as ‘The Last Night of the Proms’ concerts. So, on learning that Chris’s shop was to close down at the end of June, the

organisers of the lunch, together with the Editor of Syston Town News, decided to use the lunch as an opportunity to celebrate Chris’s involvement in Syston life during the past 17 years that the shop has been open. After the meal was finished, Chris was presented with a beautiful book featuring photographs of various private gardens in the British Isles, called appropriately ‘Secret Gardens.’

Chris was delighted with her gift, and the organisers were happy to have had the opportunity to mark Chris’s retirement from her shop in this celebratory public way.

After this, the guest speaker Felicity Austin gave the assembled ladies a talk about children’s clothes in the 20th century. She showed the audience many of the gorgeous vintage garments that she owns; and told stories about the garments and how she has acquired these over a number of years.

Musical Extravaganza

St Peter and St Paul CE Academy held a Musical extravaganza on Thursday 25th May and what a programme they put on! The music ranged from Musical theatre to traditional South African, film scores to chart toppers.

On what was one of the hottest days of the year so far, the choir performed a wide and varied range of music joined by ex-pupil Grace Longland.

Grace is about to go to London to join the Emil Dale Performing Arts

U3A Painting Workshop

There were eleven eager people arriving for the Jayne Good painting workshop on the morning of the 22nd May, organised by the U3A committee. Many of us never having painted with oils before, were, understandably, a little nervous.

Jayne soon put us at ease with her humour and easy-going manner as she explained the equipment set out in front of us, what we would be doing and off we went.

There was much laughter amidst the groans of "my trees don't look right" and "my sky looks all wrong" etc, but Jayne was very reassuring and we finished up with, although maybe not a masterpiece, The evening was a great success and a pretty good picture. I think this will be dead-cert in the smaller Oscar categories, and may attempt to crash the Best Picture party. One thing that will be guaranteed, 1D fans will be lining up the streets in a few weeks’ time.

The Beguiled Cannes Film Festival was littered with Nicole Kidman in May. She starred in four movies and hosted the biggest gala evening. But it was her turn in Sofia Coppola’s (daughter of Francis Ford) The Beguiled that really made heads turn.

Sofia was the first female director in 56 years to win Best Director at the festival, and she deserved it.

The Beguiled is set in a girls' school in Virginia during the Civil War where young women have been sheltered from the outside world.

When a wounded Union soldier is taken in, the house is taken over with sexual tension, rivalries, and an unexpected turn of events. The Beguiled may get a limited release, so catch it where you can folks.

Queen’s Park Alive with the Sound of Music This Summer

The bandstand in Queen’s Park, Loughborough, pictured above, will play centre stage to performances by local talent this summer.

Free afternoon concerts by a number of bands and choirs will be staged on the bandstand until Sunday 27th August.

Performers will include the Loughborough Male Voice Choir, Syston Band and Hathern Youth Concert Band.

Barkby and Beeby W.I. The May meeting started with good news from our skittle team who beat Walton on the Wolds 2-1 at The Horse and Groom pub in Queniborough, the team also enjoyed a lovely supper served up in the bar afterwards.

Ruth Green then gave a report on the Spring meeting which those attending had all thoroughly enjoyed. The main part of the meeting this month was given over to the resolutions of which there were two to vote on.

The first one to be read out was ‘Alleviating Loneliness’. We discussed how this is not just a problem for the elderly but for some young mothers and some children who find it hard to go out on their own and join groups and societies. After a very lively discussion the main opinion seemed to be that there are many groups of people already addressing this problem and that we are helping to do this in our community already in various ways. The second resolution was ‘Keeping Plastic Soup out of our Oceans and Food Chains’.

This we felt we could all do our little bit to help by using less products incorporating micro beads, and changing the way we wash our clothes for example, although a small country like ours will have a very small impact compared to the large countries of the world. It did give pause for thought that what the fish ingest will eventually end up on our dinner plate (if you like fish of course).

Well after two lively debates we were more than ready for the Pimms, pate, cheese and crackers that were served up afterwards; very tasty!

130th Celebration Henry Smith & Hamylton are celebrating their 130th Birthday and have officially partnered with Sight loss charity Vista for a year of fundraising for the charity.

The charity and Henry Smith & Hamylton Opticians have been linked for many years, recently collaborating in the introduction of groundbreaking spectacle lenses, designed to improve vision in people with Macular Degeneration.

In celebration of Henry Smith & Hamylton’s 130th anniversary, the

family-based opticians, we will be aiming to raise money for Vista with various fundraising activities throughout the year.

The Syston practice hosted a Charity Fundraising night for VISTA on Saturday 3rd June with live music from Kerry Jean, games, raffle and much more! The night raised £500.

From May until August, each colleague has pledged to walk 130 virtual miles in aid of Vista, which is the equivalent of walking from Leicester’s Haymarket Memorial Clock Tower to Brighton Pier!

Editor’s report on the Annual Town and Full Town Council Meetings held on Tuesday 23rd May 2017 The Annual Town Meeting commenced at 7.00pm.

There were 13 Councillors (Cllrs), one County Cllr and one member of the public present .

The meeting began with the Chairman asking for a moments silence for the people of Manchester after the terror attack.

The minutes from the last town meeting were passed uncontested.

This was followed by each chair of the three committees: Cllr E. Vardy for Development and General Purposes, Cllr P. Henry for Amenities and Cllr T. Barkley for Resources giving their review of the past year. All three committees spoke about the work they had done to help maintain and improve Syston for the residents and each chairman in turn thanked the members of the committees and the town council staff for their hard work over the past year and all looked forward to continuing to provide a good service to the town in the forthcoming year.

This was followed by the Chairman's report. Cllr P. Henry, began by extending his thanks to all local organisations and businesses for their support, he thanked the vice chair, Cllr T. Barkley, staff and Cllrs for their support and hard work over the past year. He appreciated the work of the borough Cllrs in partnership with CBC. He said that he was sorry to hear about the illness of Cllr P. Turner, as well as the ill heath of other serving Cllrs and wished them all a speedy recovery. He also welcomed the two new Cllrs P. Knight and S Visavadia.

He thanked outgoing County Cllrs D. Houseman and S. Hampson and welcomed the new County Cllrs D. Slater and J. Poland.

He thanked all the members for their hard work on committees and panels.

He summarised his year in office and was pleased that Charnwood Borough Council (CBC) continued to have in place satellite organisations to help Syston residents. The Civic reception had been huge success - £900 towards his chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Research. He had been invited to six events in the last year and he enjoyed them very much. He spoke about future developments around the Town. The work needed for the Town Council to achieve the 30

gold standard award for an accredited council. Also the need to move forward and achieve tasks set for the council.

The Annual Report of Syston Town Council had been distributed to each member and once completed will be distributed around the town in the Library, cafes and shops. This was agreed excluding financial aspect.

There were no matters raised by Syston electors.

The meeting closed and was followed by the Full Council Meeting at 7.30pm.

There were 17 Cllrs, two C.Cllrs and one member of the public present.

The first item on the agenda was the Election of Chairman Cllr K. Pacey nominated Cllr P.Henry and Cllr C. Dolan nominated Cllr S. Hampson. Ballot papers were circulated and counted by the town manager Mrs C. Voyce and Deputy Town Manager Mrs U. Southan.

Cllr P. Henry was duly elected, and he thanked everyone for voting for him and hoped they could move on with projects started.

This was followed by the reflection; read by chairman Cllr P. Henry.

The next item on the agenda was the Election of Vice-chairman - Cllr T. Barkley was nominated by Cllr C. Dolan and Cllr H. Midgley was nominated by Cllr S. Hampson. Cllr T. Barkley was duly elected and he thanked everyone who voted for him.

Apologies had been received from Cllrs J. Branston, M. Carnal.

There were no declarations of interest given.

The next item was to Appoint Committee/panel Members - each committee appointed has 10 members plus the chairman of the council. The Amenities committee was oversubscribed and so ballot papers were circulated for Cllrs to nominate the ten members they want on the committee.

The Police sent apologies and asked the Council to accept the report if members had any questions to email the Town Manager and she would they will be passed on.

County and Borough Councillors Reports County Cllr D. Slater began by thanking the chairman Cllr P. Henry www.systontownnews.co.uk

He said that with regard to being a new County Cllr his first few weeks had been made up of training and getting to know where everything was, so not a lot to report except to say that Cllr Nicholas Rushton had been elected as Leader and Cllr Janice Richard is the new Chairman of the County Council. He said that he is Chair of the Committee for road surfaces across the county.

CCllr James Poland said he was pleased to attend as newly appointed CCllr and hoped to work closely with members going forward and thanked chairman for the Civic reception and that he and his wife had enjoyed the magician. He reiterated that not much committee work as yet. Annual County Council meeting led by Cllr Janet Richards had agreed to reduce the cabinet from 12 to 10 members to help save costs to the public. He also said that going forward they will have to deal with Brexit and if it comes down to county level, there is a flexibility of preparing for potential consequences of Brexit. So he had been busy from day one and working on his case load. He asked members to contact him if needed.

Borough Councillors Reports started with Cllr E. Vardy who spoke about his role as chair of Charnwood Forest Park. This is a large area for improvement, for which they have placed a lottery bid with a title of Chronicles of Charnwood as it will chronicle the historic landscape and provide a deeper more coordinated management at a landscape level. He had also been in correspondence with Sir David Attenborough and hoped to have more information in the Autumn.

Cllr S. Hampson had no report this time.

Cllr T. Barkley spoke about a New Year focus on delivering the Borough’s Corporate Plan and making the most of the borough. They want to improve super fast broadband, increase tourism and sporting facilities within the borough and put customers at the heart of their work. The CBC have pledged to maintain budget controls and aim to continue with the external audits. He went on to speak about Dementia week events at John JULY 2017

Syston Yard Sale Another Successful Year This year we had the biggest number of participants than ever before. With a flurry of "I hope I'm not too late to register!" messages at the last minute, most of them were lucky enough to still be included on the map due to print delays.

The weather was a complete contrast to last year, but the heat-wave affected the number of visitors around Syston. We're thinking that it was just too hot for a lot of people to be out after lunch time. We were sat under the gazebo with our feet in water!

Throughout the day we heard of wonderful stories which reflected on the primary aim of the event, of raising community spirit. It was so lovely to hear people say that they've had a great day chatting with neighbours and taking the opportunity to say hello to the ‘new people on the street’.

The event wouldn't be possible without the help of all the volunteers delivering leaflets, and the Charity Co-ordinator, Angela Perkins, sourcing a large number of raffle prizes to provide the fundraising part of the event.

This year's supported cause is the charity Warning Zone, which is an interactive learning experience in Leicester, teaching life-skills to children and young people.

The money raised will go to funding visits for the schoolchildren of Syston to learn about things such as safety in the home, risk and consequence and internet safety.

Ratcliffe Science Students Are Top of the Bench!

The dynamic Science Department at Ratcliffe College is proud to announce the outstanding achievement of four of our Year 8 Science students who took part in the prestigious Festival of Chemistry competition, run by the Salters Group on the 8th June 2017 at Leicester University. The students were Oliver Hunt, Nigel Denham, Annie Rose Reddin and, Marley Totton, pictured both above and below with their certificates.

The competition was very challenging, with sixteen other Independent schools and Academies from all over the East Midlands region area taking part. The students were set a challenge by the University to come up with a method of measuring the density of different salt solutions. The students were given five different solutions, all with different densities, and were tasked with ranking the solutions from high density to low density. The Ratcliffe students drew upon their broad Science knowledge and worked effectively as a team, conducting lots of different tests using their own unique method, which resulted in them winning the competition. Principal judge, Dr Barbara Villa Marcos, described their method as ‘perfect’ – high praise indeed. Dr Standen, who accompanied the students, was effusive in his praise of the students. He said, “This is a wonderful achievement by the Year 8 students who really worked hard to apply their Science knowledge gained through our own creative Key Stage 3 curriculum to come up trumps. They should be congratulated for their efforts”.

Barkby United CC After wins over Market Harborough and Syston, Barkby took 18 points from a draw with Leicester Ivanhoe, which was enough to take them to the top of the premier league.

In the win over Market Harborough, spinner Eamon Bourke took 4 for 21 as Harborough were dismissed for 134, Barkby got the required number of runs in the 23rd over, Tom Flowers hitting 43 off only 27 balls.

Against Syston, Barkby were all out for 211, Tom Flowers 77 and Ian Kirk 50 being the main scorers.

Syston were bowled out for 156, young spinner Cameron Sharp taking four for 22 and Ian Kirk three for 37.

In the drawn match with Leicester Ivanhoe the ever consistent Ian Kirk scored 111, Ben Silver 54, Aiden Morris 46 not out, including 6 sixes, captain Steve Flowers scored 33, Barkby's innings ending on 271 for 6.

Ivanhoe in reply finished on 249 for 9, Morris taking 3 for 62, Sharp 2 for 30 and Kirk 2 for 49.

The second team are top of division 4 East and the third team second in division 8 East.

Roundhill Sailing Club Open Day times we had an East Midlands today news team, radio Leicester and a jazz band on view as well as a fantastic 71 new sailors out in our boats.

The general consensus was that fun was had by all and off the back of the open day the club will be running junior and adult beginners courses on Sunday afternoons during July.

Sunday 21st May was a beautifully sunny, warm and windy Sunday and heralded the open day at Roundhill Sailing Club on Fosse way in Syston.

It was the clubs first ever open day as part of the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Push the Boat Out campaign.

Mixed Bag for Town C.C. After plain sailing at the start of the season, Syston Town C.C.’s 1st XI hit a stormy patch in their next few games. First, rather unluckily, their game against bottom side Enderby was rained-off and they then suffered successive defeats against Barrow and Barkby. Put in by Barrow, Syston slumped to 110-9 before Pete Howard (45) and Zahir Taher (20) put on a club record 84 for the last wicket to give the final total some respectability.

This was all to no avail as Barrow got home comfortably to win by eight wickets.

Against Barkby, Syston looked in real trouble as the visitors reached 1221. However they fought back well with skipper Umar Daniel Vernon Razzaq taking 4-53 and dismissed Barkby for what they

thought was a gettable 211. Syston started off comfortably to chase the target down but Barkby’s spin bowlers took control and despite a hard hit 64

by Daniel Vernon, Syston were all out for 156.

League leaders Kegworth were next up and after electing to bat first they were held to 215-7 with Mo Pardesi the pick of the bowlers taking 3-28.

Syston lost a couple of early wickets but Charles Wootton (71) and Daniel Vernon (55 not out) dominated the Kegworth bowling to see Syston home to a deserved 6 wicket victory.

The Premiership T20 finals, for which Syston have qualified, was to be held in May but was washed out and is due to be rearranged later in the season.

The Town’s junior sides have all made satisfactory starts to the season with all teams winning over half of their games. There have been many notable performances from juniors of all ages but two all-round performances stand out.

For the Under 13s Ewan Dealey has been in sparkling form and against Wymeswold he scored 22 not out and took 4-5. Ben Tebbutt has also been in top form for the Under 15s and scored 28 not out and took 3-8

against Melton Mowbray. Juniors have also featured regularly for the Sunday XI and 2nd XI and special mention must be made of James Howlett who took 4-20 for the Sunday XI in their victory over Empingham.
