The Seneca Lake Wine Trail, located in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region, is one of the largest coherent wine trails in North America, and is currently home to over thirty different member wineries that routinely win prominent awards and accolades for a wide variety of the food-friendly wines they craft each season. While our member wineries are excellent, award-winning producers of some of the world’s finest wines, visitors to our region should appreciate the member wineries’ commitment to the appellation. Over 60% of the wine sold in each of our members’ tasting rooms is derived from fruit harvested within the federally recognized Seneca Lake Appellation: meaning that our wineries create wine that captures and reflects our unique terroir.

December 10: The Seneca Lake Wine Trail is proud that Riedel Crystal has joined us as our 25th Anniversary Event Glass Sponsor for most of our events throughout 2011. Founded in 1756, Riedel Crystal is known worldwide for designing the finest drinking instruments for every level of wine sophistication. To fully appreciate each grape variety it is necessary to have a glass that is tailored to its characteristics. Every wine has its own blend of mouthfeel, aroma, flavor and finish that are based on the grape variety. By creating glasses made to deliver the typical components of the grape variety, the glass will highlight balanced flavors, maximize fruit and integrate acidity and tannins into the overall enjoyment of the wine. Today, the company is guided by Georg (10th generation) and Maximilian Riedel (11th generation), and their revolutionary designs and techniques continue to shape the industry. Whether it is their elegant and timeless hand-blown Sommeliers series or their casual and contemporary stemless “O” series, Riedel has a glass for every wine occasion and every type of wine.

How to get the most from your visit to the

Seneca Lake Wine Trail Responsibly and safely visiting the wineries, with a little homework and effort, can be a remarkably rewarding and enjoyable experience. Here are a few tips on how to make sure you have the best time possible.

• Having a designated driver is never a bad idea. While the

wineries can be toured, their wines enjoyed, safely and responsibly even if you lack a designated driver, certainly having one on board removes one potential difficulty. • Spitting is good. It allows you to enjoy the wine, confirm if you like it or not, but of course doesn’t increase your blood alcohol levels, enabling you to sample more wines and still be safe and responsible, especially if you’re driving. All wineries provide spit buckets at their tasting bars though if you happen to not see one, just ask, and they’ll gladly provide one for you. • Drive responsibly. Take your time, enjoy the scenery and savor the experience. • Eat food! Food is good. Make sure you start your touring day out with a solid breakfast, and definitely make sure you visit one of our region’s many excellent restaurants for lunch or dinner. Or bring a picnic! There are many excellent parks in the area, and even wineries themselves, with picnic locations. • Ask questions. Wineries work very hard to employ and train knowledgeable tasting room staff. What separates the average tasting room server, from a bartender at your average tavern, is that they know much, much more about the wines, how they were made, what distinguishes them, etc. Take advantage of their knowledge and ask them any questions you may have. • Don’t forget the off season. If you’re passionate about learning about the wines, the off season (generally between Thanksgiving and Memorial Day) is truly the best time of the year to tour wineries, when there are fewer customers vying for tasting room staff attention, and an increased likelihood of a knowledgeable owner or manager being at the tasting bar. • It is recommended, and sometimes required, that groups make appointments. This will ensure that you’ll be greeted and served promptly and capably, and also so the winery can plan their staff levels to accommodate your group.

MILESTONES The Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) marks its 60th anniversary in 2011 with a birthday celebration and free admission for everyone on May 19. (The rest of the year, as always, the CMOG – along with the neighboring Rockwell Museum of Western Art in downtown Corning – offers free admission for kids and teens 19 and under.) Information: cmog.org. 2011 is the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, and Elmira and environs will be abuzz with sesquicentennial activities. The Chemung Valley History Museum is offering a series of Civil War-themed exhibits from 20112015, including “Fugitives No More: Chemung County African Americans During the 19th Century” in 2011. Information: ChemungValleyMuseum.org. Also, Trolley Into Twain Country Tours will rev up its coverage of Elmira’s Civil War sites during its 2011 season. Tour sites include a former prison camp, Woodlawn National Cemetery, and the home of John Jones, a former slave who buried Confederate soldiers while working as a sexton at Woodlawn. Information: MarkTwainCountry.com. The Seneca Lake Wine Trail turns 25 this year, making it one of the oldest wine trails in the country. FYI, Riedel (sounds like “needle”) Crystal is the official 25th Anniversary Event Glass Sponsor. Watch for a brand-new trail event in June – called the Smokin’ Summer Kickoff – co-sponsored by JAVA-GOURMET (a Finger Lakes award-winning, artisanal, coffee-based specialty food company). Information: SenecaLakeWine.com. The Arnot Art Museum in historic downtown Elmira celebrates its centennial this year. Probably one of the best-kept secrets in Finger

Lakes Wine Country, the museum houses a world-class permanent collection of 17th to 19th century European paintings and 19th and 20th century American art. Temporary exhibitions highlight various aspects of the collections and include works from around the world. Exhibitions, events, and programs are presented in an 1833 showcase mansion with a grand late-20th century gallery addition. Information: ArnotArtMuseum.org. The Wineglass Marathon, which marks its 30th year in 2011, is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon. It’s been rated one of the top 10 marathons in the country by Runner’s World. Race day is Sunday, Oct. 2, and it will be preceded by a two-day Expo event in Corning. A portion of the proceeds from runners’ entry fees is donated to two charities, the Greater Steuben Red Cross and Health Ministries of the Southern Tier. Information: WineGlassMarathon.com.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING ABOUT FINGER LAKES WINE COUNTRY… ShermansTravel named the Finger Lakes region a “Top Ten Value Destination for 2011.” It was the only wine country destination featured and one of only three domestic destinations to make the list. (Tip: If you want to enjoy Finger Lakes Wine Country when it’s most affordable, be sure to “Top Ten check out Value the region’s Destination Winter Wine for 2011.” Weekends. Besides enjoying the serene wintertime beauty of the region and getting quality face time with winemakers, great deals are available on area accommodations and attractions.) Information: WinterWineWeekend.com. 16 /

ShermansTravel also named Finger Lakes Wine Country one of its “Top Ten Off-The-Path Wine Regions” as well as the Finger Lakes being named a “Top Ten Lake Vacation” last year. Finger Lakes Wine Country is one of the world’s most beautiful wine regions, according to Budget Travel magazine’s 2010 Readers’ Choice Awards, featured in the October 2010 issue. Readers also named the Finger Lakes region a top value destination. Meantime, Boat Trader magazine’s online edition (BoatTrader.com) named the Finger Lakes region one of the “10 Best Places to Live and Boat” in the United States. The magazine pointed out that “Finger Lakes wine is regarded as among the best in the United States outside of California.” The Finger Lakes region, noted for its “world-class wines and small-town American charm” was featured in the New York Times Bestseller 1000 Places to See Before You Die by Patricia Schultz.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could capture the feeling of your Finger Lakes Wine Country vacation in a bottle and enjoy it at home with friends? You can – by joining one or more of the wine clubs available at most of the wineries in Finger Lakes Wine Country. Most are free to join (you pay for the wine and shipping). Make sure the state you live in allows direct shipping of wine. Wine clubs are growing in popularity nationwide, for good reason. Aside from the convenience of having fine wines shipped to your doorstep, wine clubs typically offer discounts on wine and merchandise, exclusive opportunities to taste limited vintages, and access to member-only events where you can socialize with the winemaker and people like you who enjoy learning about and drinking fine wines. For example, Rooster Hill Vineyards, on the east side of Keuka Lake, decks the halls for its annual Holidays on the Hill event each December, with great wine, culinary creations, live music, and tastings of new vintages direct from the wine cellar hosted by the “winemaker/elf.” Meantime, on the other side of Keuka Lake, Heron Hill Winery offers its club members a private barrel tasting and tour with the winemaker in the spring; an invitation to one of its Tunes in the Tent events in the fall (including lunch for two and a free bottle of wine); complimentary wine tasting certificates; discounts on wine and gift purchases; a member newsletter, and more. At Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, you can become a “Case Club” member if you buy five cases of wine within 12 months. Members receive 25 percent off every case purchase for life, an invitation to participate in special “Case Club Members Only” events, and advanced notification of newrelease wines with an opportunity to purchase them before they are available to the general public. Glenora Wine Cellars offers the Forbidden Fruit Club, a deal so good that it has limited membership. You choose your favorite Glenora wines and they will send you your wine plus additional wines based on your selection in four shipments a year. Members also receive exclusive deals at the winery, inn, and restaurant. As you tour Finger Lakes Wine Country and discover new wines, be sure to ask the folks in the tasting room about joining their wine club so you can enjoy the wines you love most again and again. Visit FingerLakesWineCountry.com for direct links to every winery’s shopping cart. Just visit the winery database and click on the BUY WINE icon.

Rieslings Get Recognized The 2008 Dry Riesling Reserve from Hermann J. Wiemer Vineyard was named one of Wine Spectator’s “Top 100 Wines for 2010.” It was selected from more than 15,800 new releases from around the world in blind tastings conducted by the magazine’s editors. “Increasing the significance of this recognition is the fact that it is the only American Riesling in the top 100, the first Finger Lakes wine to achieve that,” explains Jim Trezise, president of the New York Wine & Grape Foundation.

MARK TWAIN COUNTRY

Finger Lakes Wine Country is packed with cultural attractions, from art and glass museums to historical sites that bring to life scenes from America’s literary heritage and turn-of-the-century farm life. Here are just a few:

CORNING MUSEUM OF GLASS 2011 marks CMOG’s 60th anniversary. It contains the world’s most comprehensive collection of glass art and artifacts. There are demos, make your own glass sessions, and more. Kids 19 and under are free! Special exhibits include “Mirror to Discovery: The 200-Inch Disk and the Hale Reflecting Telescope at Palomar” (through Oct. 30), and “Mt. Washington and Pairpoint: American Glass from the Gilded Age to the Roaring Twenties” (mid-May – Dec. 31).

ROCKWELL MUSEUM The Rockwell Museum of Western Art boasts the finest collection of American Western and Native American art east of the Mississippi, as well as engaging and interactive hands-on activities. In addi-

tion to the museum’s permanent collection, special exhibits include “Face to Face: Portraits and the American West” (which runs through early May 2011), and “Andy Warhol: Cowboys and Indians,” (which runs through mid-October). Plus, kids 19 and under are always free!

ARNOT ART MUSEUM One of the few representational art-focused museums in the world, the Arnot Art Museum is housed in its original 1833 showcase, plus a grand late-20th century gallery addition. The permanent collection includes 17th to 19th century European paintings and 19th and 20th century American art. Temporary exhibitions highlight various aspects of the collections and include works from around the world.

ORCHESTRA OF THE SOUTHERN FINGER LAKES The Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes is one of America’s outstanding professional symphony orchestras. Talented musicians from throughout the region perform concerts and chamber music events in Elmira and Corning. The Chorus of the Southern Finger Lakes is made up of enthusiastic community musicians who also perform with the orchestra.

CLEMENS CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS The Clemens Center in Elmira is the region’s premier center for music, dance, theater, comedy, and more. Mandeville Hall – a flexible, “black box” venue for intimate performances – and the majestic Powers Theater – an architectural treasure restored to its vaudevillian-era grandeur. The 2011 “Broadway” series includes performances such as Monty Python’s “Spamalot” or the kid-friendly “The Song of Mulan” in April.

There are many galleries located around the region – from larger venues such as the 171 Cedar Arts Center in Corning and the Yates County Arts Center & Crooked Lake Gallery in Penn Yan to smaller shops like 2 Crocked Pots pottery in Bath or the Lime Berry Art Gallery in Hammondsport. And many Finger Lakes wineries often showcase local artists’ work.

RICH IN CULTURE

Mark Twain spent many summers of his adult life in Elmira with his wife Olivia and her family (Olivia was from Elmira). The author penned many of his famous works in his octagonal Elmira study overlooking the Chemung River valley. The study now sits on the campus of Elmira College. Trolley tours are available July and August.

SEE & DO

GET PHYSICAL!

GET BUSY! From spectator sports such as NASCAR racing at Watkins Glen to outdoor activities such as golf, kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, and more, Finger Lakes Wine Country has everything to fit an active lifestyle.

GRAB YOUR WATER WINGS!

FLY HIGH! There are plenty of ways to take to the air. Celebrate 100 years of naval aviation in 2011 at Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport (named for the “father of naval aviation”). The collection relates to early aviation and local winemaking history. And the annual Seaplane Homecoming in September is quite a spectacle. Or stop by the National Soaring Museum at Harris Hill in Elmira and take a 15- to 20-minute glider ride over the Soaring Capital of America. You can also hop on one of FirstAIR’s helicopters for a bird’s-eye view of wine country. View vintage warplanes at the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center in Horseheads, and look for a renovated historic flight program coming this summer.

START YOUR ENGINES! Experience full-throttle excitement at Watkins Glen International and watch everything from NASCAR to Vintage Grand Prix racing. Non-race days can be exciting, too. During the annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival in July, see the world-famous road course from a ride in an official Watkins Glen International vehicle – and hold on tight! Or take advantage of Thunder Road Tours, where you can take your own car on the track for three paced laps and snake through the “esses” for only $25. 24 / F I N G E R

24_See and Do.indd 1

The Chemung River boasts even more outdoor options as it winds its way through Corning and Elmira. It’s perfect for bird watching and canoeing. And the river is easily accessible from a paved and scenic state bike route. It’s also a great spot for geocaching (above) – a high-tech game of hide and seek. If golf is your game, there are more than a dozen choices in the area. And even though he penned the line “golf is a good walk spoiled,” there’s an Elmira course named for Mark Twain. But you’ll be the one spoiled: Legendary architect Donald Ross of Pinehurst, N.C., fame designed the classic course in 1937.

Build your trip online, visit FingerLakesWineCountry.com

Of course, the Finger Lakes area is a water wonderland. And there are myriad opportunities to get your feet wet, so to speak. Check out a sightseeing or dinner cruise on Keuka Lake on The Esperanza Rose or on Seneca Lake with Captain Bill. If you’d rather feel the wind in your sails, Seneca Sailing Adventures takes you on a 40-foot, 12-ton, cutter-rigged Lee Sea Anne. Or Schooner Excursions can take you out on True Love, a 1926 John Alden Malabar VII Schooner. If you’d rather do it yourself, there are plenty of outfitters who can set you up to go kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, or even charter a fishing boat.

From water sports to snow sports and everything in between, there’s plenty to help keep you active. Watkins Glen State Park, with its 19 waterfalls and carved tunnels, is a must-see. The gorge path winds over and under the falls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. The Finger Lakes National Forest (a more than 16,000-acre tract and New York State’s only national forest) and the Finger Lakes Trail offer more natural beauty – and plenty of opportunities to hike, go horseback riding, swimming, fishing, sledding, cross-country skiing, and more.

veryone knows the age-old question, but no one has the answer: the chicken or the egg? In the Finger Lakes, there’s a similar unanswerable debate right now. Which came first, good food or good wine? People in the Finger Lakes wine industry believe that by creating gorgeous wines and beautiful tasting rooms, they opened the door to chefs and food producers for creating world-class food to go along. Others say the farmers and chefs were already here, turning out great fruits and vegetables and running good restaurants, and the winemakers simply grabbed on to the reins of a movement that already had good momentum. For foodies living in and visiting the region, the real questions are: Who cares? And: Where do we eat? Fortunately for them, there are plenty of answers. The Finger Lakes has recently become a culinary hot spot on many levels, and no matter what kind of eating you like to do, there’s an option to satisfy your craving. PERFECT PAIRINGS Let’s start with the more recent phenomenon of vineyard dining. Winery owners are opening up their vineyards to visitors looking for a different dining experience. 26 /

For anywhere between $75 and $150 per person, diners are invited to walk through the vineyards to an elegant outdoor table setting and a four- or five-course meal paired with wines. As the sun sets over the lake and vines, guests are provided with seasonal dishes of meats, breads, cheeses, and fruits mostly

coming from nearby farms. In between courses, winemakers answer questions about that year’s vintage, and chefs describe how they came to pair the food flavors with that of the wines they chose. For example, Atwater Estate Vineyards features “Vine Dining” (shown on our cover) with Samantha Buyskes Izzo, chef and owner of Simply Red Bistro in nearby Ovid. She cooks an amazing five-course meal at tableside for a maximum of 24 people. Other wineries offer multiple-course dinners where the winemaker and the chef work together to create the perfect menu – showcasing new releases and locally harvested food. Area wine trails also offer special pairings. Spend a romantic Valentine’s Day at the Seneca Lake Wine Trail’s “Chocolate and Wine Weekends,” or “Spring Wine and Cheese Weekend.” The Keuka Lake Wine Trail has events year-round – from a “Barbecue at the Wineries” to “Harvest Tours” – each emphasizing the marriage of wine with food. The Cayuga Lake Wine Trail hosts celebrations of “Mardi Gras” or “Say Cheese,” plus an annual “Wine & Herb Festival.” Area museums are getting in the act as well. The Corning Museum of Glass has local wine tastings at

its 2300 Degrees events (monthly from November – May), and the Arnot Art Museum is planning a food-and-wine-centric exhibit in 2012. They’re all delicious opportunities to gain some culinary education – without classroom walls. FOOD FESTIVALS If you’re a singular-focused kind of eater, with your eyes on how many ways can you serve one ingredient, then the Finger Lakes has what you need. Themed food festivals are quite the common occurrence. In spring you’ll find fresh asparagus, summer brings plenty of juicy stone fruit for pies and cobblers, fall is peak harvest time for all things edible, and winter brings squash and root vegetables for stews and savory dishes.

Fox Run Vineyards, on the west side of Seneca Lake, takes a different approach by trying to ruin your breath. Their Garlic Fest, slated for Aug. 6-7, is now in its 19th year. The fest offers cooking demonstrations, lectures on growing and selecting garlic, and plenty of wine tastings to wash down the strong garlic flavor. But it’s meeting the interesting folks who grow garlic for a living that makes the event special. Bob Emens, owner of Luke’s Pickled Garlic Scapes, offers snappy, tangy bites of the green stalks that grow like curli-cues out of the bulb. And there are the Gambino brothers, whose prize-winning bulbs make an appearance every year. The Gambinos will even teach you how to braid your garlic for kitchen decorations. And there are many more festivals, including the all-encompassing Finger Lakes Wine

CHEESE TRAIL The newly minted Finger Lakes Cheese Trail will have you thinking more about milk – not from the carton, but directly from goats, sheep, and cows. In 2010, cheese makers in the area rallied together to create a trail – much like the wine trails – to help cheese lovers find their way to the best wheels and logs being made on a daily basis. Members of the trail offer special open house weekends where visitors can sample cheeses and learn about the technique of making small batch cheese. The cheeses range in style from nutty flavored Dutch Gouda and tangy fresh goat cheese to sharp American-style cheddars and even a creamy, gooey-centered Irish style. A number of these cheeses are also available at local wineries and gourmet markets. The tours are self-guided, so you’ll get to drive yourself around the hills and valleys of Finger Lakes to visit each one. And it’s worth every mile. When you nibble on a chunk of cheddar you can almost taste the grass the cows munch on. Seeing the fields they roam in gives a wholesome connection to your food like you’ve never experienced. 28 /

FARMERS MARKETS One of the fastest-growing food options in the Finger Lakes is farmers markets. Several years ago, the pickings of farm markets were few and far between, but now you can find one pretty much every day throughout the growing season. Some of these are strict farm markets and some offer everything for the local shopper. A regional favorite is the Windmill Farm & Craft Market in Penn Yan, where local honey, fruits and veggies, beeswax candles, and some of the best whoopee pies you’ll ever taste are on display. Another popular stop is Wisner Market in downtown Elmira’s Wisner Park (Thursdays, June – September). It’s been going strong for 15 years, and features more than 30 vendors. The Corning Farmers Market in the Gaffer District is another gem, with vendors selling fresh vegetables, baked goods, and crafts during the season, inspiring not only home cooks and visitors, but professional chefs as well. At the Radisson Hotel Corning, chef Amanda Allen often offers diners a Market Menu, using the fresh produce she found at the market that day. For a year-round market experience, stop in Oak Hill Bulk Foods near Penn Yan. They’ve got local produce, plus selections of fresh meats, cheeses, and baked goods.

As a chef and restaurant owner, I find the Finger Lakes to be an inspiration for creating true regional cuisine that possesses a natural synergy with the locally produced wines. A strong locavore movement has evolved in this region, which promotes all that the Finger Lakes area has to offer. I am truly excited and inspired to live and create in an area that has so much to give. Hold on to your plates, because this is just the beginning! A culinary and wine explosion is happening in the Finger Lakes, and I'm excited to be at its nucleus! Chef Debra Whiting Red Newt Cellars Winery & Bistro

GOURMET DINING In recent years, several chefs have opened restaurants in between the wineries and have refocused their menus to feature produce at its peak. The farmer-to-chef connection is strong at these restaurants, and chances are good that the food you’re being served has ties to a neighboring farm. If you’re looking for a unique culinary experience, skip the familiar places and try a farm-driven bistro. One spot that gives you a chance to taste the best from both farms and vineyards is Red Newt Cellars Winery

FARM-TO-TABLE DINING If you’re looking for a good place to get a taste of both the high quality food and drink that is local to the Finger Lakes, these restaurants are worthy stopping places. You’ll find a unique experience at each, but they’re all committed to providing you with a culinary connection to the farms and fields nearby. — M.W. and Bistro on the southeastern shore of Seneca Lake. Chef Deb Whiting has a seasonally driven menu that boasts 80 percent locally sourced ingredients, while her husband Dave Whiting makes exceptional vinifera wines for Red Newt. One special treat, and a very generous move on Dave’s part, is that Red Newt Bistro’s wine list offers selections by the glass from many other Finger Lakes wineries, allowing you the opportunity to sample the Rieslings, Gewürztraminers, and Cabernet Francs from around the lakes. Many other wineries have restaurants of their own and provide a well-rounded dining experience. BEYOND WINE If you prefer grains to grapes, the Finger Lakes has that in spades, too. It’s a wellkept industry secret that when you ask a winemaker if they prefer red or white at the end of a working day, they might answer: “I prefer a good, cold beer.” Craft brewers are setting up shop in the towns of the Finger Lakes, creating worldclass draughts for thirsty winemakers – and everyone else, too. Among them: Rooster Fish Brewing on North Franklin Street in Watkins Glen is a popular spot for seasonal brews, including a German style wheat beer (aka Hefeweizen), with bright lemon and clove flavors, perfect for a hot day in the summer. Horseheads Brewing Inc. – which opened in 2007 – is another award-winning 30 /

craft brewery. Their colorfully named brews – including Chemung Canal Towpath Ale and Brickyard Red Ale – are getting popular on local menus, too! And because of a recent rise in smallbatch distilleries in the region, the next thing to be created in the Finger Lakes just might be a Distillers Trail. Finger Lakes Distilling on Seneca Lake is one business that is leading that charge, with over nine varieties of spirits and new ones being made all the time. Their rye whiskey comes from New York State grain, the mash for the bourbon is 70 percent local heirloom corn, and their maple brandy gets its origins from Empire State apples. You can sample many locally made libations – from wine to beer and spirits – at The Starlite Room in Elmira. The great after-hours spot has live music, food, and a cozy, friendly feel. The best of both worlds is available yearround in Finger Lakes Wine Country. When you pair all of the local food options with local wines like crisp Rieslings and dry Pinot Noirs, you won’t care whether it was the food or the wine that came first, you’ll just be happy you chose to eat and drink the local flavors of Finger Lakes Wine Country. GREAT TASTES Try a Finger Lakes-inspired meal at home. These recipes from area chefs feature local wines, beer, produce, and cheese. Sled Dog Stew From Executive Chef William Cornelius, formerly of the Ginny Lee at Wagner Vineyards. Ingredients: 2 tablespoons olive oil ¼ lb. bacon, chopped small ½ cup flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon white pepper 3 lbs. beef chuck*, trimmed of fat and cut into ½-inch cubes (*Hunters – this recipe works wonderfully with vension) 2 cups coarsely chopped sweet onion 2 cloves garlic, minced

3 carrots, peeled, split and cut into ½-inch pieces 3 parsnips peeled, split and cut into ½-inch cubes 3 bay leaves 3 cups beef stock or beef broth ½ tablespoon thyme 2 cups diced potatoes (try Yukon Gold with the peel on) 1 bottle Wagner Valley Sled Dog Dopplebock (or other strong lager) 2 cups pearl onions

Directions: Place oil and bacon in a 1-gallon stockpot, set over medium heat. Combine flour, salt, and white pepper. Toss the beef in seasoned flour, shake off excess. Once the bacon begins to render its fat, add the beef and sauté, stirring often. Brown the meat until the bacon begins to crisp. Add onion, garlic, carrots, parsnips, and bay leaves. Sauté approximately 5 minutes, then add beef broth, thyme, and potatoes and bring stew to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer, add the beer and pearl onions. Cover and simmer, stirring often, for 2 hours. Remove from heat, discard bay leaves, and adjust seasonings. For thicker gravy, remove 1 cup of stew broth and whisk in a small bowl with some leftover seasoned flour, add back to the stew. Serves 6-8 Chef William serves this stew over garlic mashed potatoes. It pairs well with full-bodied red wines such as Wagner Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Sautéed Shrimp with Lemon-Caper Butter and Goat Cheese From Executive Chef Orlando Rodriguez, Veraisons Restaurant at the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars. Ingredients: ¾ lb. angel hair pasta 2 tablespoons virgin olive oil 1-½ lbs. shrimp, mediumsize, peeled and deveined 1 tablespoon garlic, minced 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves 2 tablespoons capers

Directions: Cook pasta in 6 quarts of boiling water 7 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile, in a large sauté pan add the oil over medium-high heat. Add shrimp and cook about 2 minutes each side. Add garlic, thyme, and capers; cook about 2 minutes. Add Cayuga wine to deglaze the pan and cook an additional 3 minutes. Stir in butter until melted, add the tomatoes and pasta. To finish, crumble goat cheese over the top. Makes 4 servings. Serve with Glenora Wine Cellars’ Cayuga White wine.

Arugula White Wine Sauce Chef Debra Whiting from Red Newt Cellars Bistro suggests trying this sauce with pasta, fish, or chicken. Ingredients: 2 cups Finger Lakes Riesling 1 tablespoon garlic, minced 1 quart heavy cream

1 lemon, zest and juice ¼ lb. fresh arugula salt and pepper to taste

The Finger Lakes area is often compared to the Rhine region of Germany. Deep lakes store heat and moderate the macroclimate, preventing early season frost. Most vineyards are planted on steep hillsides, which provide good drainage and sun exposure.

Winery: Charles Fournier, from France, and Konstantin Frank, from the former Soviet Union. That year saw their release of the first commercially successful Riesling and Chardonnay wines of New York State. Until then, few believed that local winters could sustain the tender Old World species of grapevines from which Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc spring forth and which today thrive quite happily and successfully in the Finger Lakes. The area is often compared to the Rhine wine growing region of Germany. Stored heat from the area’s deep lakes moderate the macroclimate, preventing early season frost and extending the summer’s heat for a longer growing season. Most vineyards are planted on steep hillsides, which provide good drainage, sun exposure, and a reduced risk of frost. When the famous 1970s wine revolution exploded, New York grape growers and winemakers persuaded the legislature to make licensing easier and less expensive for family wineries to flourish. That led to yet another “emergence” – one of the most dynamic wine industries in the United States led by small to medium-sized wineries. Today, thousands each year visit hundreds of small, mostly family-operated wineries that hug hillsides and lakeshores throughout the region. Each year, it seems, a new winery joins the clan, and another emerging future for premium wine is off and running. Also emerging in the Finger Lakes is an extension of the nascent national movement toward sustainable viticulture and winemaking. Wineries have made a commitment to retain and to advance the region’s bucolic pastoral panorama as more and more people come to see for themselves. Across the Finger Lakes, grape growers are part of a five-year VineBalance program co-sponsored by Cornell’s Agricultural Station, the NY Wine and Grape Foundation, and the NY Wine Grape Growers Association. The program teaches grape growers how to minimize use of chemical fertilizers

to prevent run-off into the lakes, and how to maximize natural growing techniques with mulch and compost. In addition, some Finger Lakes wineries have developed and built efficient facilities to reduce fossil fuel use. For example, Red Tail Ridge Winery is seeking to become the region’s first winery to gain LEED certification (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) from the U.S. Green Building Council. Among their green initiatives: a new wine-processing building that uses geothermal heating and cooling. Over at Hunt Country Vineyards, a vertical-axis wind turbine (VAT) helps generate electricity to reduce their footprint on the land. Other efforts include composting and shipping wine in “used” cartons. They also built a processor to make biodiesel from area restaurants’ used vegetable oil, and use the fuel to power their tractors. Make no mistake about it: A responsible wine industry stimulates growth in the hospitality industry as well. Today, Finger Lakes is one of the top world-class destinations not only for wine aficionados but also for travelers. Dotted with fine hotels, B&Bs, and lakeside cabins, Finger Lakes Wine Country is also sprinkled with an array of restaurants from the simplest to the classiest … and it is all within a fiveto six-hour driving distance from major cities in the Northeastern United States and Eastern Canada. For those who live farther away, major airline service gets you to Elmira Corning Regional Airport. From there, access to many car rental companies places you within minutes of one of the three major lakes: Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga. To make the trip especially rewarding wineries have joined together (often with those same quality restaurants) to offer unified experiences through special wine events that highlight the four seasons and some of our most celebrated holidays. To join in, you follow members either of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail, Seneca Lake Wine Trail, or Cayuga Lake Wine Trail. At each stop, visitors are welcomed with open doors, open hearts and – most important – open wine bottles and gourmet plates. Amidst stylish comfort, surrounded by large window views of vineyards upon vineyards that slope toward winding lakeshores, just a few ounces of wine takes visitors simultaneously to past and present in spectacular Finger Lakes Wine Country, a locale with a perpetually emerging future.

Great Escapes Year-round surprises await in Finger Lakes Wine Country By Dave DeGolyer

T

he cloudless sky is the kind of blue you can get lost in if you stop and stare long enough. And if you visit Finger Lakes Wine Country, you’ll want to stop and stare, again and again. As you stand on the spacious deck at Dr. Konstantin Frank Vinifera Wine Cellars, tasting an exceptional vintage from some of the nation’s oldest vinifera vines and enjoying the breathtaking view of Keuka Lake, you’ll start to understand that Finger Lakes Wine Country is about more than wine and water. It’s about an experience you won’t find anywhere else in the world. The Finger Lakes Wine Country region is full of doors: myriad opportunities to explore the known and enjoy the best of it, as well as opportunities to venture into the unknown and come away changed for the better. Spend the morning in a world-class art museum, drive 20 minutes for a noontime sailplane ride (exceptionally scenic during a fall color tour), then drive another 15 minutes for a hilltop lunch to take in virtually the same views that inspired Mark Twain when he wrote about Tom and Becky and Huck and Jim. Had enough of relaxing? A half-hour away, experience for yourself the rush of what it’s like to drive on one of the country’s premier racetracks. Spend the night in a rustic campground,

an elegant B&B, or an upscale mansion overlooking a lake. Or perhaps you’ll choose to stay at a winery, where you’ll find a wonderful view of the lake, a bottle chilling in the room fridge, and an excellent restaurant just a few short paces away. Start the next day with a refreshing hike

State gets its name from 11 long, slender, deep-water lakes that Native American legend suggests were left by the hands of The Creator. Finger Lakes Wine Country centers near three of the most famous – and arguably the most scenic – of the Finger Lakes: Keuka, Seneca, and Cayuga. It has a high concentration of wineries – about 100 all together, each with its own story, personality, and specialization. Although most of the “don’t-miss” attractions in Finger Lakes Wine Country are products of human invention, some of the most awe-inspiring and unforgettable are simply products of nature. You don’t want to miss Watkins Glen State Park and its 19 waterfalls and carved tunnels. A path features stone walkways and bridges, and meanders through the glen over and under the waterfalls. The acclaimed park has been named one of Reserve America’s top outdoor locations and one of the top 100 campgrounds nationwide. The Chemung River offers even more outdoor options as is winds its way through Corning and Elmira. It’s perfect for birdwatching, canoeing, and geocaching. And the river is easily accessible from a paved and scenic state bike route. The Finger Lakes National Forest is another natural beauty. New York State’s only National Forest is some 16,000 acres of land where camping, hiking, horseback

or snowshoe trek through glens and gorges, on trails that wind their way above and below waterfalls, then stop in a gourmet café for lunch, or do some shopping – perhaps in a quaint village square or historic district that inspired a national downtown revitalization project. There are so many choices that the most difficult decision you have to make while you’re in Finger Lakes Wine Country is which door to open first. THE WATER … AND THE WINE Of course, two of the main attractions of Finger Lakes Wine Country are the lakes and the wine. The Finger Lakes region of New York

There’s no such thing as an “off-season” in Finger Lakes Wine Country: Celebrate summer’s warmth at a lake, witness nature in full spring bloom, relish in the fall harvest’s bounty, embrace the activities of winter, or celebrate the holiday season at charming venues.

riding, swimming, fishing, sledding, crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, and exploring are all encouraged. In addition, the Finger Lakes Trail offers hikers more than 800 miles of connected footpaths across the state – and part of this trail system can be found in the National Forest. There’s nothing quite like a lake vacation, except maybe a lake vacation in wine country. Editors of ShermansTravel magazine named the Finger Lakes one of the Top 10 lakeside retreats in the world. Budget Travel readers named Finger Lakes the most beautiful wine country destination in the world in the 2010 Readers’ Choice Poll. There are numerous options – from sightseeing or dinner cruises on Keuka Lake on The Esperanza Rose or on Seneca Lake with Captain Bill to kayaking, water skiing, chartering a fishing boat, or simply hitting a public beach or sitting on a dock at the shore dangling your feet. And if you’re looking to rent simple cottages to luxurious homes, cook your own meals, and stay a few days or a few weeks, an expert source such as Finger Lakes Premier Properties offers you the ultimate control over your accommodations. Then there’s the wine. The Finger Lakes offer an incredibly diverse sampling of wine styles – sweet

to dry, ice to sparkling, local favorites to national and international award-winning vintages, and wines made from native and hybrid grapes, as well as some of the finest European-style wines you’ll find anywhere. But winery owners know that great wine isn’t enough. They provide a complete destination experience. There are marvelous

tours like the one at Pleasant Valley Wine Company – where you explore historic buildings and caves at the first bonded winery in the country). There are guided tours like those offered at Fox Run Vineyards and Glenora Wine Cellars – where you become privy to the behind-the-scenes details involved in winemaking, with tours F i n g e r L a k e s W i n e C o u n t r y. c o m

Celebrate America’s literary heritage in Elmira, the summer home of iconic author Mark Twain. Then visit The Corning Museum of Glass — the most comprehensive collection of glass art and artifacts in the world. This year marks the museum’s 60th anniversary.

enjoy wine tasting experiences at reduced prices. Passports or coupons are typically good for up to two people and entitle the holder to tastings and discounts at participating wineries. OTHER TOP ATTRACTIONS There’s more to Finger Lakes Wine Country than wine and water, of course. Here are just a few of the area’s top attractions. ➢ You may have never stopped to think about how much something as ubiquitous as glass influences daily life. After a visit to the remarkable Corning Museum of Glass (CMOG) you’ll know there isn’t anything else quite like it on Earth – and you’ll discover just how much fun it can be to shape molten glass or create your own piece of glass art. 2011 marks CMOG’s 60th anniversary. Starting with an original collection of 2,000 pieces, it now contains the most comprehensive collection of glass art and artifacts in the world – more than 45,000 objects spanning 35 centuries. To celebrate the 60th milestone, there will be special exhibits throughout the year, in addition to the customary live glassblowing demonstrations and daily workshops, where in less than an hour, you can create your own glass art.

➢ Less than half a mile away you’ll find the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, which has nothing to do with Norman Rockwell and everything to do with the Old West. In many ways, the untamed wilderness and the spirit of adventure reflects the very essence of Finger Lakes Wine Country. There’s a convenient shuttle bus to take you between the two museums. The Rockwell Museum boasts the finest collection of American Western and Native American art east of the Mississippi. It has engaging and interactive hands-on activities for kids, and there are special events for adults as well – like margaritas on the terrace during the summer. And if you visit November-April, Sundays are free. ➢ Over a quarter of a million visitors each year attest to the full-throttle excitement found just a half-hour drive from Corning at Watkins Glen International. For more than 50 years, race fans have descended upon the village of Watkins Glen to satisfy their highoctane itch. As exciting as the races are, you may want to visit on a non-race day. That’s when Thunder Road Tours let you experience for yourself what it’s like to snake through the “esses” and accelerate out of some 11 testy turns while dropping more than 300 feet in elevation (which, although much more

of vineyards, wine cellars, and production facilities, your guides will explain the history of the winery, the influence of the Finger Lakes on the wines, and the various steps involved from taking a grape from the vine to the bottle. Finger Lakes wineries give the visitor many reasons to linger, including small museums and pop art galleries, unique boutiques, culinary events, live entertainment, gourmet cafés and restaurants, and wonderful overnight accommodations. In addition to making some impeccable wines, area wineries offer a multitude of ways to enjoy their product. For example, Lucas Vineyards, celebrating 30 years in 2011, will customize wine labels just for you. Regardless of where you go, there are intriguing personal stories to be heard, like that of the beloved winery dogs at Hunt Country Vineyards or the story of the siblings at Three Brothers Winery. You might also hear the stories behind names of wines like Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards’ Red Cat (the best selling domestic wine in New York State). Area wine trails host a number of themed events throughout the year – some focus on holidays or coincide with fall foliage tours or the harvest, while others celebrate cultural cuisines. Each wine trail offer a “passport program” that gives you the opportunity to FINGER LAKES WINE COUNTRY

gradual, is nearly twice the drop of Niagara Falls). Visit April through October and take your car on the track for three paced laps for only $25. Race events include Grand Am, SCCA, and NASCAR, plus a vintage Grand Prix race. And the track hosts an annual Finger Lakes Wine Festival (to be held July 15-17, and recently named one of the American Bus Association’s Top 100 things to do in 2011) with the largest collection of New York State wines anywhere, plus live music, culinary classes and demonstrations, craft vendors, a toga party, upscale tastings, and dinner. For non-wine drinkers, a Brewers’ Garden lets craft brew connoisseurs sample ales, lagers, IPAs, stouts, and more from local and regional microbreweries. Of course, if wine is your thing, you might already be aware of the way the size and shape of a wineglass can enhance a tasting experience. Austrian wine glass artisans at Riedel Crystal have received worldwide acclaim for designing glasses that accentuate the character of the wine, and they have selected a special Riesling wine glass for the Finger Lakes region. So, if all those other exciting elements aren’t enough to make the Riedel Experience a not-to-be-missed event, consider the fact that there’s also a high-end private tasting (find out how to 48 /

be part of this special VIP experience by visiting FLWineFest.com) with a senior-level executive of Riedel where you can discover for yourself how exceptional Finger Lakes wines can taste even more extraordinary. MORE UNEXPECTED DISCOVERIES Some of the most memorable vacations involve making totally unexpected discoveries. There are a number of “best-kept secrets” in Finger Lakes Wine Country. There are a few places it wouldn’t hurt to know about ahead of time. ➢ The Arnot Art Museum in Elmira has been called “arguably the best small-town art museum in America” by Vitality magazine. Yet chances are you haven’t visited yet. What you’re missing is not just the exceptional art, it’s the unique opportunity to experience works presented just as the 19th century collector would have experienced them. The Museum is one of the few in the world that focus on representational art. The year 2011 begins the centennial celebration so stay tuned for exciting exhibits and events. ➢ For all the things you learn in school, it’s what you discover outside a classroom that resonates strongest. Never heard of Glenn H. Curtiss? He’s known as the “father of naval aviation” because he invented the

first flying boat – and 2011 commemorates 100 years of naval aviation. He also built motorcycles before Harley-Davidson and held the country’s first public air show and the first long-distance flight. He’s one of those old-school people who, ironically, never finished school, but made changes that transcend time. Pencil in a stop at the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport. ➢ Less than 20 minutes from Corning, in the Chemung River Valley, you’ll find the “Soaring Capital of America.” Learn about the first female Space Shuttle Commander at the National Soaring Museum, experience the freedom of motorless flight with a sailplane ride out over the valley, or send your kids to one of the popular overnight camps. ➢ When most people think of Mark Twain they think of the Mississippi River and steamboats. They’re often surprised to learn that Finger Lakes Wine Country is also Mark Twain Country. The iconic author wrote some of his most famous works while spending his summers looking down on the Chemung River from his study at Quarry Farm. He’s also buried in Elmira along with his wife and their family. During each July and August, you can take a guided Mark Twain Trolley Tour that retraces some of the author’s life in the area. ➢ In addition to its rich aviation history,

Get your pulse racing at Watkins Glen International, wander beside 19 waterfalls at Watkins Glen State Park, set sail from the pier at Seneca Lake, take in America’s “best small-town art museum,” or delve into aviation history.

captivating scenery, and magnificent wine, another common thread that binds Finger Lakes Wine Country is the diversity of year-round shopping opportunities. You can scour the offerings of antique shops of all sizes (including Antique Revival, New York State’s largest) in nearly every area town and hamlet. In between, there are one-room pottery shops and historic downtown shopping and entertainment districts, like Corning’s Gaffer District (New York State’s first wheelchair-accessible historic district), where you can stroll brick sidewalks and streets lined with vintage lampposts and explore more than 100 stores, galleries, boutiques, and restaurants, not to mention encounter some remarkable historic architecture along the way. You can also get a jump-start on holiday shopping at The Christmas House on Historic Maple Avenue in Elmira. The 1890s Victorian three-story shop is open from late June through the holiday season. They also have an outlet at Arnot Mall. There’s also something inexplicably rewarding about stepping back in time, and

shops like the Seneca Lake General Store and the Pennsylvania Yankee Mercantile don’t merely bring back the concept of the general store, they provide an experience you can’t really get any other way. It’s about more than the old-school ambience of the café or the apothecary or the homemade fudge; it’s about more than the local and organic products and the sundry other home goods you’ll find, from pottery and utensils to fresh produce. It’s as if, when you step into these shops, when you walk across an original hardwood floor and you hear the creak of timber laid down more than 100 years ago, when you look up at the original tin ceiling, you feel transported, in a way, to an entirely different era. Of all these choices, however, The Windmill Farm and Craft Market (the largest farm and craft market in New York State) might be the most unique. It’s also one of those places you need to know about ahead of time, or be lucky enough to stumble across, as it’s open only one day a week, seven months a year. With more than 250 vendors on any given Saturday, The Windmill offers the opportunity to taste world-class wine, eat ribs, purchase handmade Adirondack chairs, and get a spinal adjustment by a chiropractor … all in the same location. Although some of the best individual shops are hidden gems located en route to somewhere else, there are some concentrated areas to get your shopping fix. Visit FingerLakesWineCountry.com for information about special events and promotions at these and other shopping and entertainment districts. ➢ Franklin Street in Watkins Glen ➢ Village Square in Hammondsport ➢ Corning’s Gaffer District ➢ Arnot Mall in Horseheads ➢ Historic Downtown Penn Yan ➢ Historic Hanover Square in Horseheads ➢ Maple Avenue in Elmira

A FIVE-SEASON DESTINATION Finger Lakes Wine Country is a different kind of “seasonal destination” in that there really is no “off-season.” Folks in the Finger Lakes make a point to celebrate all seasons – and with good reason, as the area itself (the people, the places, the things to see and do) embodies the best aspects of each. ➢ There’s the rejuvenation of springtime and a sense of beginning, whether it’s found in a great outdoor adventure, a quiet B&B, window shopping, or enjoying Mardi Gras – Finger Lakes style. ➢ There’s the vitality and lushness of summer, with the rolling forested hills, fertile valleys, and the many shades of blue found in these special lakes. ➢ There’s the rich, multifarious colors of autumn, the wonderful scents, and the ripeness of the harvest (which is celebrated in many communities at harvest festivals, as well as wine trail events). ➢ And there’s the brilliance, the sparkle, and the magic of wintertime found in the simple joys of snowshoeing one of the many outdoor trails or enjoying cool events like Wine on Ice and Cabin Fever. ➢ But, in addition to the traditional four seasons, Finger Lakes Wine Country also celebrates a fifth season, the holiday season, with everything from parades and annual events like Sparkle, Deck the Halls, and Starshine to special getaway packages. There are scores of towns, villages, and hamlets throughout the region, adding texture to the rich tapestry that is the Finger Lakes, adding layers of character and charm and a certain authenticity that offer so many special moments and that transform a visit into something more, into an experience you’ll want to relive with family and friends again and again. TRAVELERS’ TALES My husband and I have been coordinating a “Wine Tour With Friends” for six years now. Jeff and I, and 18-24 of our closest friends head out early October, via limo bus. We wear customdesigned matching shirts (so we don’t lose anyone … LOL!), and each year has a different theme. Last year’s theme was “Perfect!” as our tour was on Oct. 10 (10/10/10). We have also had “Group Therapy,” “Got Wine,” and “When Life Gets Complicated I Wine”! The awesome hospitality, beautiful scenery and distinguished wines have made this a tradition that we will carry on for many years to come! We have yet to visit the same winery twice ... and there are so many yet to explore! For us it is a day to get away from it all, experience new sights and tastes, and laugh until our faces hurt! We have all come to cherish this gem of a region so close to our home towns! – Gina L., Rochester, N.Y.

“Home is where the Heart is.” The Finger Lakes, mostly Keuka Lake, is where my heart is. Keuka was an important part of my life growing up. In summer we swam, sailed, water skied, and just enjoyed its beauty. I got my license to drive a boat at the age of 11. I rode my bike around the lake and swam across it, hiked the falls and worked picking grapes. In winter we skated, ice boated, raced go-carts, walked across the lake when frozen, and even landed and took off in a small plane from the ice. The lake was never taken for granted but respected. Keuka will always be in my heart no matter where I am. – John B., Washington, D.C.
