EXPERTAdvice Facial Rejuvenation: Putting Your Best Face Forward

BOTOX® works by relaxing the facial muscles, thereby softening and smoothing overlying skin wrinkles. Facial fillers are used to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and/or restore volume to areas of the face that have become hollowed or saggy. With the exception of fat, the effects of these injections are temporary, generally lasting a few months.

What is facial rejuvenation? Facial rejuvenation refers to procedures, surgical or non-surgical, that aim to reverse the effects of facial aging and restore a more youthful appearance. The progression of facial aging over time is highly variable, with genetics, sun exposure, stress, and lifestyle playing important roles.

What are some examples of non-surgical facial rejuvenation? Injection of botulinum toxin (BOTOX® cosmetic) and facial fillers (such as Juvéderm ®, Restylane®, or a patient’s own fat) are the most common nonsurgical procedures.

Brow lift restores a more youthful, refreshed look to the region above the eyes. The procedure corrects drooping brows and improves the horizontal lines and furrows that can make a person appear sad, angry, or tired.

Am I a good candidate for facial rejuvenation surgery? You are a good candidate if you:

are in good health

are a non-smoker

Facelift, necklift, eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), and brow lift are common surgical procedures. They produce more dramatic results and are longer lasting when compared to non-surgical alternatives. Facelift surgery improves sagging facial skin and deep creases, and corrects “jowls” by resuspending the ptotic (droopy) soft tissues of the face, tightening muscles, and redraping the skin.

have a positive outlook and have specific, but realistic goals in mind for the improvement of your facial appearance

What can I expect at my consultation?

A necklift is an essential component of many facelifts, and addresses the changes associated with the aging neck. This procedure is often combined with fat grafting, a technique which restores volume loss in the aging face.

During your initial consultation your plastic surgeon will take a medical history and perform a physical examination with a specific focus on your area of concern. He or she will then discuss with you if they feel you are a good candidate for facial rejuvenation and make an individualized, tailored plan to best fit your needs and expectations.

Eyelid lifts can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. In the upper eyelids it is usually performed to correct excess, droopy upper eyelid skin. In the lower eyelids it is often done to correct puffy bags under the eyes which create a tired appearance.

It is important to only seek consultation from a surgeon who is certified in plastic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the only national accrediting body (searchable database at www.royalcollege.ca/portal/ page/portal/rc/directory).
