RECIPE Valentine’s Day

Chocolate Cherry Cake and Icing

Chocolate Cherry Cake 1 box fudge cake 1 21 oz. can of cherry pie filling 2 eggs beaten 1 tsp. almond extract Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine all 4 ingredients together. Stir until all cake mix combined. Pour into a greased pan. Will make two 9 inch round (bake 25 minutes), 9 x 13 (30 minutes) or a 15 x 10 jelly pan (30 minutes).

Chocolate Icing 1 box powdered sugar 1 stick butter softened 1 tsp. vanilla ½ c cocoa powder – Slowly add 1 teaspoon of milk, at a time, until achieving desired consistency. Allow cake to cool and then frost. Recipe by Dana Jo

with Kristy FINE: Where did you grow up, go to school etc.? Kristy: I grew up right here in Naples, FL, where I was born and raised. I attended Seagate Elementary School, Pine Ridge Middle School, and Barron Collier High School. When I graduated High School I attended UCF and received a BSBA in Marketing.

FINE: What did you do after college?

How did you get your experience for owning your own children’s clothing store?

Kristy: When I graduated college, I was hired as a manager at Express near UCF where I managed 16 college students, mostly girls. My training wheels were off with that one! I was then offered a position as an Event Coordinator with a private company where I worked on Gala’s, Golf Tournaments, Festivals, etc., for non-profit organizations. I then received an offer to attend FIT in New York City for Fashion Merchandising so I packed my bags and headed to NYC. From there, I was recruited by Neiman Marcus to attend their buying program. I soon headed from NYC to Dallas where I lived for 3 years and was a buyer for their 38 stores across the country in their children’s department.

Marcus to Naples so I decided to open my own Children’s store. I began the planning process in 2007, and Gigi’s Children’s Boutique officially opened in 2009.

FINE: What does Gigi’s offer compared to other stores? Kristy: Gigi’s Children’s Boutique offers the finest in fashion for all ages. Our niche is high fashion, high quality, all with a personal touch. Approximately 80% of our products are made in the USA and a majority of it is 100% cotton. I love our products and I love making my customers happy!

FINE: What types of items does Gigi’s carry? Kristy: We start with newborns and go up to size 8 in boys and size 16 in girls. We carry baby gifts, diaper bags, skin care accessories, customized items, jewelry, swim and apparel. Some of my favorite fashion lines are Splendid, Ella Moss, Haven Girl, Joe’s Jeans, 7 For All Mankind, Mayoral, and Kissy Kissy.

It was always a dream of mine to own my own store, but I loved my job and loved living in Dallas. When my husband and I started the discussion of having a family, I realized I wanted to be close to my parents and family in Naples. It was hard to transfer my job at Neiman

FINE: How do you balance family, owning your own business, and helping in the community?


That’s a great question! Some days I wonder how I made it through the day just like every Mom. I feel that we all have a purpose in life and I like to use my store and business as a platform to give back to the community. Every year I put together the “Back to School Fashion Show” event at Mercato where we partner with the Education Foundation and raise money for supplies to help support teachers and education in our community. I get local kids and teachers to participate; we hand out free identification kits and get the Sheriff’s office involved, along with Chick-fil-A and other after school programs. It’s a great event and always one of my favorite things we do all year! We also participate in a fashion show for the Golisano Children’s Hospital of SW Florida. This is Gigi’s 3rd year participating in the show and it’s such a great cause.


What advice or encouragement do you have for women and moms reading this?

Kristy: I hope that I can inspire other Moms and women out there who are struggling trying to do it all and who are thinking about taking a risk to start their own business, going back to work, or switching jobs. There are definitely a lot of sacrifices that are made but there are great rewards at the end.


Kristy: When we go out on a date, which is rare, we like going to the Turtle Club. We like to sit on the beach and watch the sunset there. It’s so relaxing and I feel like I can just breathe. FINE: What are some of your favorite restaurants here? Kristy: I love Bravo in Mercato. The staff and the service are always amazing, and the food is really good! Rocky: One of my favorite places to go is Côte d’Azur. It’s a little French Country restaurant that I think is actually the very best restaurant in Naples. It is unassuming, but when you walk in you feel like you are right in the French Countryside. The place is dynamic; the food is incredible and very consistent. One of my other favorite places is Sea Salt. It has great food and a great atmosphere.

Chipping Made Easier

Head-Hands-And-BALL Keep it Simple! If you really want to improve your scoring, it is mandatory that you have your chipping game in order. Even touring professionals miss an average 5 greens per round! They are forced to Up-and-Down it many times to recover strokes. Most amateurs will miss more greens than the average tour professional, so finding a simple method for this part of the game will help lower those scores. Here is a simple tip that will make you better around the greens.

First, assess the shot, then choose the club. Once the club is selected, the “set-up” is always the same (photo 1). I want to make sure that my “Head-Hands-And-Ball” are in a relatively straight line. It is VERY important to have all three elements in a line. The next photo (photo 2) is the “impact” position, which is almost exactly like the “set-up” position. The “bottom” of the chipping stroke is always directly in line with the head. So, to get consistent solid contact, you must keep your head directly over the ball. If your head is “Behind” the ball, the bottom of the chipping stroke will be behind the ball. And, if your head is “Ahead” of the ball the bottom of the chipping stroke will be past the ball.

The next element of successful chipping I believe is to keep your hands in line with the ball AND your head. I will drastically illustrate improper hand location by showing you what “hands ahead” looks like. What this position promotes is de-lofting the club, thus, not getting proper height on the shot. A lot of teachers teach “hands ahead”, and I will agree that this is not a “bad” way to do it, but the ball will definitely take off lower and have more spin causing a skid.

The other “improper” hand position would be to have the hands behind to ball at impact. This hand position almost always causes a “fat” shot, and is never a position or method anyone would teach. The ball when struck from this position will have more height than planned. This is a very common problem for amateurs that are trying to “lift” the ball, rather than letting the loft of the club get the ball into the air.

So, the next time you are working on your game, make sure that “Head-Hands-And-Ball” are in alignment. You will become more consistent with your chipping stroke, AND, your ball will react with more consistency when it’s rolling towards the cup. You may even look forward to missing a few greens! Good luck, and great golfing.

The Old Collier Club is focused solely on providing pure enjoyment of the game of golf to its members.

Located West of Highway 41 just North of Immokalee Road and across from Germain BMW, is a very private, inconspicuous entrance to the most impressive 267-acre natural preserve and Golf Club in this area. Tom Fazio designed the 18-hole championship course and the entire club is owned and operated by Collier Enterprises. The clubhouse and the golf course were completely hidden from the entrance. A typical passer by would never know this club was here in Naples. Once I entered the front gates, I felt transported into a different world, into a golfer’s dream.
