FALL 2016

Upcoming Tudor Oaks Auction Will Be Fun Event for All

Enjoying the Summer at Tudor Oaks Encouraging Independence Through Assisted Living

Greetings from the Tudor Oaks Exective Director This summer at Tudor Oaks has been full of fun for everyone! People are still talking about the Resident Cabaret that we held in the Olive Wood Theater. We’ve also been celebrating the season with an impromptu ice cream sundae social, musical performances from local groups, and a smoothie event to keep cool during the humid summer. In early August, we all enjoyed the annual resident and staff picnic. In addition to a spread of delicious picnic food, the event featured toe-tapping music from the Big Cedar Bluegrass Band and a trip down memory lane with an antique car show. In September the fun continues

Tudor Oaks Residents Enjoy Outdoor Amenities This Summer Tudor Oaks residents are a fun and competitive bunch. On Mondays and Thursdays, residents have historically gathered for a few rounds of friendly bocce ball. This year, however, they are upping the ante. With access to two bocce ball courts at the recently opened Glenn Cove Sports Complex, residents have been honing their skills to prepare for an end-of-season tournament against the local Lake Brittany neighborhood bocce ball team. The Tudor Oaks team has their work cut out for them facing off against such stiff competition! We wish them luck. In addition to bocce ball courts, the Glenn Cove Sports Complex includes two putting areas that allow residents to fine-tune their short game and practice sinking a 20-footer. Residents and families can also enjoy the recently completed Memory Walkway with beautiful plantings and waterfalls or take stroll around the 110 acre campus with its many paths and lighted walkways. Another popular pursuit this summer has been gardening. The Tudor Oaks gardeners are excited to have a bumper crop of fresh produce this year. With so many veggies to spare, the gardeners have generously placed baskets of produce around the community for other residents to share and enjoy. Gardening not your thing? Just walk down the hall where you may hear the snap and shuffle of cards and you know you are in the right place for Sheepshead, PAGE :: 3

the spotlight, join the Men’s Chorus, Women’s Ensemble or the Cheerful Chimers bell group. Life at Tudor Oaks can be as active or private as you like, spend your days as you choose. From cookouts in Lamson Plaza, educational presentations, book discussions, day trips, walks around Lake Brittany to the Men’s Coffee Hour, you will find a way to fill your day. If you wish for more physical activity try our Zumba classes, a dip in the warm water pool, a workout in the gym or a stroll through the Tudor Oaks Art Gallery and a special sweet treat from the Butternut Bistro.

A family member of a Memory Care resident recently shared their experience:

“It was hard to admit my mom needed memory care... It was more difficult for me to move my mom than it was for her to actually make the move. We are so relieved because she is so happy and having fun again.” The Memory Care Program at Tudor Oaks is designed for those who are experiencing memory loss and associated concerns due to Alzheimer’s and related memory issues. To best serve residents and families, Tudor Oaks has its own designated memory care wing that offers residents a safe and comforting environment. Here too, the individual resident apartments are both appealing

and specifically designed for this unique group of seniors. Thoughtful layout is complimented by subtle colors and textures specifically selected for those dealing with memory loss. The memory care wing also offers a large enclosed outdoor patio and garden area to encourage and support a sense of freedom found only out-ofdoors. To meet the needs of each resi-

dent, personalized care plans and specialized activity programs are developed by our specially trained staff. Programs consist of a wellness component based on the “whole person” concept and address the emotional, spiritual, social and physical needs. Families can be assured their loved one is safe and living to their greatest potential as a resident of Tudor Oaks Memory Care.

Tudor Oaks Rehab Services atFrances Henry Center

Tudor Oaks Uses Cutting Edge Technology to Improve Recovery

The mission of the Tudor Oaks rehab team is to help people regain previous levels of function and return home as soon as possible. Cynthia Traczek, physical therapy assistant and program director states, “rehabilitation gives individuals the opportunity and knowledge to restore their functional independence. Our new therapy gym and new private rehab rooms with private bathroom and shower, give residents the best in rehab care.”

Omni VR Virtual Rehabilitation System

Recently, an OmniVR Virtual Rehabilitation System was added to the therapy gym. The advanced, yet easy to use technology has a sophisticated 3D camera and special computer software to track a resident’s precise movements allowing them to interact in a virtual world. When asked about this new therapy residents respond, “Is the session over already?” having completed their therapy sessions without realizing it because the program is so much fun. When residents feel good and see their progress they become energized, which fuels their desire to complete their recovery. This is the type of outcome the Tudor Oaks team strives for. In addition to the Omni VR System the rehab center is equipped with treadmills, recumbent bike, free weights and other equipment the staff uses to develop plans that help residents improve or regain strength, recover balance and overall functionality. “We gear the program and activities to what residents can do,” says Traczek. Beyond physical therapies, Tudor Oaks also offers occupational therapy (OT) teaching new ways to perform life tasks and speech therapy that helps residents with language, communication and swallowing disorders to improve language expression, comprehension and other oral-motor skills.

Visit the new Frances Henry Health Center at Tudor Oaks

The Frances Henry Health Center provides highly skilled nursing care 24 hours a day. “We are able to have 61 people in our health center, which is smaller than many communities, so it’s a more intimate setting,” said Eckberg, Tudor Oaks Executive Director. “Now with our new dining room, activity center, restorative room and therapy gym, residents have state-ofthe-art health care at their fingertips.” “My wife is in the best health center – I went to seven other locations before selecting Tudor Oaks. I enjoy my independent apartment and can swim (in the pool) …every morning.” — Ken Schneider, Resident

Also available to health center residents are wellness activities and classes. The health center’s wellness program offers activities developed expressly for residents in this level of care. However, should they wish, residents can take part in activities throughout the campus. Residents have the option of choosing a private or semi-private room with access to outside gardens that welcome residents and their visitors, in addition to all the other amenities offered on campus.
