News > Summer events The Fine & Country summer event schedule is in full swing. The first calendar event was the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club in Surrey, where Fine & Country exhibited fantastic golf properties for sale around the world. > New locations The Fine & Country brand is operating in more locations than ever before, with the opening of a new office in Mauritius. The office will concentrate on properties in the north of the island, and is situated in Grand Baie. The office has been established by Arnaud Mayer, who has run successful real estate agency Evaco on the island for many years. Mauritius has a population of just over 1.2 million and offers a wide range of properties, from seafront apartments to villas and investment opportunities. The island has enjoyed an influx of investment into its infrastructure and transport links, including roads, ports and airports. There are several completed, ongoing and upcoming development projects aiming at transforming the country into an investment hub and a highly prized tourist destination. > Fast-tracking growth Fine & Country has had an extremely successful start to 2018 expanding rapidly in the first quarter of the year. The brand opened two offices in Europe, in Cyprus, and Cascais, Portugal. The new Fine & Country Cyprus office was launched by Nicos Anastasiades, President of the Republic of Cyprus, who gave a welcoming speech to more than 200 people. Fine & Country Cascais joins the network of 12 Portuguese offices in Comporta, Porto, Estoril, Chiado Lisbon, Marques do Pombal Lisbon and six locations along the Algarve. Additionally, Fine & Country has expanded in the UK, with three new offices. Fine & Country Tunbridge Wells opened its latest office in mid-January, while Fine & Country Leicester and Fine & Country Bury St. Edmunds opened in February.

> Three-year earthquake anniversary On 25 April 2015, a devastating earthquake struck Nepal. Tens of thousands of people were displaced, and thousands remain living in temporary accommodation. Three years later, The Fine & Country Foundation has rebuilt over half of the homes in the small mountain village of Thangpalkot1, where 86 of the 94 houses were flattened. A donation of £16,000 provided funding for 10 houses in March 2017, and a trek to Everest Base Camp in October 2017 raised an incredible £32,000 for a further 20 houses. The support for Thangpalkot1 continues in 2018: £1,296 was raised at the Fine & Country conference, and individual offices have pledged their support for the village. 50 houses have now been funded and 41 of these are completed or receiving some finishing touches. T

he Pinelli Estate’s Porsche Cayenne squeezes through the narrow streets of the historic quarter of Naples, slowing for pedestrians who pad across the cobblestones, seemingly oblivious of traffic. It’s a relief when we reach the motorway, Mount Vesuvius on our left as we head south towards the Cilento Coast. “This is Salerno,” says Nigel Carley, Chairman of The Pinelli Estate, gesturing towards the window. Rumour has it that Ryanair may soon be flying into the airport here, perfect for visitors wanting to bypass the chaos of Naples. Gliding along the road, Nigel’s enthusiasm for this part of Italy is palpable. He points out fields of vegetables, ripening under the Italian sun. It’s artichoke season, and crates are sold by the roadside. “Buffalo sheds,” he says, pointing to some tin roofs in the middle of a field of grass being grown as Buffalo fodder. Buffalo here live a coddled existence, explaining Campania’s reputation for fine buffalo mozzarella cheese. Before long, we are winding through the hills, past tumbledown stone buildings that make me dream of renovation. The Pinelli Estate was once one of these – “Il Rifugio”, the property on the estate, which covers 18 acres of rolling hills, was a traditional local farm building with over ten generations of Italian owners. It dates back almost 300 years, but suffered from neglect in its latter years. Nigel and his soon-to-be-wife Dawn’s tender ministrations have brought the home back to life in spectacular fashion. Local stone, aged birch wooden beams, shuttered windows and terracotta roof tiles reinforce the classic Italian architecture. My friend Katy and I are ushered into the upper level through thick wooden doors. Four double en suite bedrooms are on this level, featuring exposed brick, timber beams and extravagant touches – chandeliers, ornate mirrors, and bold bedside lamps. Downstairs, there’s a cosy lounge room and a snug that leads onto the kitchen and dining area and out to a terrace that overlooks the heated infinity pool. “The Jacuzzi was delivered today,” says Nigel, pointing past the pool where three workmen surround the large hot tub. “We should have it working by the end of the day.” Past the pool, olive trees lead down the hillside, making way for a spectacular view. Lush green hills roll across the horizon and down in the valley, where a train chugs over the lengthy railway bridge on the outskirts of Agropoli. A triangle of sea marks the furthest boundary of the summer resort town. It’s breathtaking and only the appeal of a Mediterranean lunch of fresh Buffalo mozzarella, green olives, prosciutto, ruby-red tomatoes and crusty bread drags our eyes from the spectacle. Nigel and Dawn are keen to show us to the highlights of the area, of which there are many. We drive by Agropoli Marina, where houses perch on the cliff-top like sentinels of the sea. In Paestum, founded by the Greek Achaeans around 600BC and less than 20 minutes’ drive away, we eat gelato while we admire some of the best-preserved ancient

remium golf properties are just that, commanding a price premium when located on a spectacular golf course. Apartments, town houses and semi-detached villas are all available at PGA Catalunya, with the latter set in a private garden enclave nestled between the fairways of the Stadium Golf Course. The luxurious, open-plan living accommodation features a swimming pool, sun terrace, private gardens and large master bedrooms, with en suite and separate dressing areas. It’s evident purchasers are happy to pay a premium when buying property at PGA Catalunya, as the most recent La Selva semi-detached villas have all been sold. The survey also demonstrated that golf properties within European Tour Properties’ network venues accrue a 19% premium over properties for sale outside the resort. This can be seen with villas at Quinta do Lago, Portugal and Terre Blanche, France. Set amongst the rolling hills of Provence, in the midst of oak and pine trees, Terre Blanche was ranked No 1 Golf Resort in Continental Europe by Golf World magazine. Off-plan villas and plots of land are available here, with each villa owner offered a full range of services as well as resident membership to the Terre Blanche golf club.

Interestingly, and perhaps surprisingly, the survey by European Tour Properties showed only 34% of property buyers are golfers and 66% are non-golfers, with the largest number of golfers buying property at Black Mountain Golf Club and Resort, Thailand. Finally, one of the resorts that has the highest number of international property buyers is Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai. Golfers are clearly attracted to the world-class golf course here, in addition to the luxurious properties. allorca’s Tramuntana mountain range is said to have a healing, magnetic field that draws creative types to Deià – most notably the writer Robert Graves – on the north-west coast of the largest of the Balearic Islands. The small coastal village is considered one of the prettiest villages on the island, perched in a ravine at the foot of the Teix Mountain, with views of the Mediterranean below. Retreat to the wilderness P

umphouse Point is a new wilderness retreat in the heart of World Heritage Wilderness in Tasmania, Australia, on the southern hemisphere’s deepest lake. Two industrial buildings constructed as a pumping station in 1940 by Tasmania’s Hydro-Electric Commission have been gently transformed as an intimate retreat, set against a dramatic natural landscape. English country charm Making the right design decisions can be tricky for any home, but particularly one that is listed. Fine & Country Interior Design’s Rebecca Hughes Interiors explains how they approached a unique and challenging design project.

I

t’s every interior designer’s dream to work with a Grade II Listed Georgian stately home. However, it takes lots of experience and knowledge of listed building requirements to do justice to such an incredible property. When Rebecca Hughes, owner of Rebecca Hughes Interiors, first visited a stately home set in the surroundings of a stunning country estate, she knew it would be a labour of love.

way forward was to create boxing for the light fittings to sit on along the walls, designed to mimic the original architectural elements. We extended the bases of the columns and painted them in such a way that they appeared as though they had always been there. The boxing didn’t touch the original fabric of the building, but rather sat alongside it, meaning no damage or alterations impacted the original walls,” says Rebecca.

“We knew from day one that this project would require a great deal of our resources and thinking outside the box”, says Rebecca. “For me, a successful renovation of a historic building always looks to the past whilst moving forward, and although a little restrictive, the listed status didn’t mean we were paralysed in our design suggestions. It’s a myth that it is impossible to make changes to a home with a strict listing status on it, but we certainly did need to make compromises on some of our design choices.”

The project was a constant voyage of discovery for Rebecca Hughes Interiors. When designing the bathrooms, they discovered layers of old wallpaper, rich in history, that revealed fashions through the ages. They also spent time researching the drawing room design and used historic paintings of the original room as a reference for their new scheme.

Their first area to tackle was the hallway and staircase which, despite grandiose proportions, was poorly lit and felt dark and unwelcoming to those coming through the main entrance. The staircase was particularly impressive, with a spectacular ceiling height reaching up to the roof of the building. Designing a lighting scheme with proportions this size required additional assistance from a specialist. “The listed building status stipulated we couldn’t touch or disrupt the original fabric of the walls,” explains Rebecca. “Therefore, with the help of John Cullen, a company specialising in lighting design, we mapped out which areas we should highlight and the best method, while staying within the restrictions.” The hallway is rather unique, with a high-vaulted ceiling and superb bronze statues raised at first-floor level, so it took some careful planning. “We decided the best
