If you are interested in the charm and character of barn conversions, this stunning property in the Alkham Valley provides the ultimate mixture of historic features coupled with everything you need for modern-day living. You will find the property along a quiet country lane surrounded by farmland and the rolling hills of the North Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is situated a short walk from the heart of the friendly and social village of Alkham, with its renowned Marquis Bar and restaurant, picturesque village green and a village hall that offers a variety of activities, including regular film shows. The spacious and versatile design of the property offers flexible accommodation whether you have a growing family or want a wonderful home for entertaining. Walking into the main reception area will really take your breath away. It has been created to provide the ultimate in modern open-plan facilities with its fabulous vaulted and oak-beamed ceiling that runs through to the kitchen, a superb oak staircase and exposed flint walls as well as a fascinating chimney breast with a double-sided log burner in the centre, providing a degree of separation between the lounge area and the dining area, where there are also patio doors to the large terrace. Steps lead up from the dining area to the magnificent kitchen with its fascinating mix of copious modern units with granite work tops and traditional accoutrements. These include a four-oven Aga with a matching but separate Aga Companion, comprising an electric oven and a gas hob, making it seem as though you have a six-oven Aga. The ‘Companion’ is particularly useful in the summer if you don’t want to use the gas-fired Aga all the time. There is also a large central island, concealing a dishwasher and washing machine, plus a breakfast bar that provides a natural divide between the kitchen and the superb oak-framed and slate-roofed sitting area, specially designed to be in keeping with the rest of the property, featuring an oak-beamed and vaulted ceiling as well as fitted blinds. At the opposite end of this floor is a large family bathroom and three bedrooms with beamed ceilings and exposed flint walls, including two double bedrooms – one with ensuite facilities and a further bedroom currently configured as a dressing room with fitted cupboards and wardrobes. The mezzanine floor features an impressive master suite with a vaulted and beamed ceiling, comprising large double bedroom and an en-suite shower room. The large galleried landing provides a study area overlooking the openplan living area. Outside, there is a long gravel drive, flanked by areas of gravel, shrubs and a lawn, leading to two garages and plenty of off-road parking. A large and secluded south-facing terrace runs the length of the property while a second raised patio is situated at the rear of the garden, overlooking adjoining farmland. As the property is a converted former dairy, the side overlooking the main terrace has a series of arched openings where the cows entered to be milked. These are now large and attractive arched windows creating a light and airy ambience throughout the building.

THE CURRENT OWNER SAYS: “The house has been a marvellous home for entertaining and we have enjoyed many dinner parties over the years – having a 10-seater table made to suit the large dining area.” “The Old Dairy was converted by an imaginative developer and we bought it as soon as the work was completed in 2001. We fell in love with it as soon as we saw it. We adore the peace and quiet of the location, alongside the wonderful countryside, as well as the friendly village community where we have enjoyed a great social life. It is a wonderful spot for walking and cycling and there are bridlepaths for riding, with an equestrian centre nearby. We play golf and there are several courses within easy reach. For anyone interested in water sports there is plenty of choice along the nearby coast. The location is extremely convenient for us to get to our work in Maidstone as we can be on the M20 in a few minutes and then have a 30-minute drive up the motorway. For our frequent journeys into London we can be at Folkestone West station in five or six minutes for the high-speed train to St. Pancras. For our European travel it takes less than 15 minutes to reach the Eurotunnel Terminal or the ferry terminal at Dover and we can drive to Gatwick Airport in 75 minutes. The house has been a marvellous home for entertaining and we have enjoyed many dinner parties over the years – having a 10-seater table made to suit the large dining area. As there is oak flooring

throughout we’ve even rolled back the rugs in the sitting room to create a dance floor for New Year’s Eve parties! The large terrace has been ideal for barbeques and al fresco dining too in the spring and summer months. The garden has been designed to be easy-to-manage and, as it is so low-maintenance, it means that the house and garden are ideal for anyone short on time or looking for a country holiday and weekend retreat. There are excellent private and grammar schools in Folkestone, Dover and Canterbury while the primary school in River has been rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. Shopping facilities are easily accessible in Whitfield and Folkestone while River – just three miles away – can cater for any immediate needs. Canterbury and Ashford are also within easy reach for more extensive shopping choice. After 17 very happy years we shall be sorry to leave The Old Dairy but now we are retiring and no longer have to be concerned about ease of commuting we have decided to move back to Deal where we lived prior to moving to Alkham and where many of our friends still reside. We hope that another family will enjoy this lovely barn conversion as much as we have.”
