Seller Insight It seemed like fate that drew the current owners to the characterful White Chapel one drizzly Sunday 30 years ago. “We were walking through the streets and backstreets of Robertsbridge” say the owners. “It was dusk, so we were just getting ready to go home when I glanced over to my left and saw a glass noticeboard cabinet with a photograph of the Chapel in it. Even though we weren’t looking for a property at the time, it just felt like something had clicked into place and we called the estate agent to make an offer the very next day!” “Though we had initially only planned to buy the Chapel itself,” the owners continue “we ended up purchasing the Cromwellian cottage beside it too, and set about extending it into the perfect family home. Originally built in 1659, the Cottage was extended by the previous owner in 1958, and we ourselves further extended it in the other direction with the addition of a new kitchen and conservatory. We also installed a staircase into the roof of the cottage to convert the loft into extra bedrooms and a children’s lounge. It’s a real family house: light, bright and airy yet warm and comfortable. As for the Chapel itself, we have simply maintained this in its original state, only rewiring the electrics and putting in gas pipes.” Not only the buildings, but also the grounds are beautifully kept and stunning to regard. “There is a long waterfall into a small pond, and another one into a stream running through the garden and across the front of the conservatory to another pond” say the owners. “We also have four patio areas so there is somewhere to catch the sun at any time of day. Stone steps lead to a stile over to open fields” they continue. “We have rights of way from the Chapel land, and can walk for miles over the fields and down the historic Roman road from Rochester. There is even the possibility to buy extra land at the back of the house, as neighbours have done, should the next owner wish to extend the garden.” “We love the octagonal conservatory with its spectacular views of the garden and its patio terrace with log burning fireplace for summer evenings.” “Chapel Cottage has been a lovely family home, where we have made hundreds of happy memories watching our five children have grown up here. They all still come back here at Christmas time and are very fond of the place.” “There is so much space, and the access to the fields at the back of the property has provided many happy times for our five children and their friends, who often camped over there on summer nights.” “We have had countless parties and visitors here over the years, and even with 20 people there is space for people to move around the house, in and out of doors, without you even noticing. The layout flows so well that the house seems to swallow people! Our children were always having friends round after school, and we would never know who was upstairs, there is space for so many people here! Our summer barbecues were always amazing, too.” * These comments are the personal views of the current owner and are included as an insight into life at the property. They have not been independently verified, should not be relied on without verification and do not necessarily reflect the views of the agent.

The White Chapel and Chapel Cottage An amazing opportunity to purchase a famous local landmark in the historic village of Whatlington, near Battle. The White Chapel was built as a Methodist chapel in 1872 and is thought to be of the Victorian Gothic style. The chapel is thought to have closed around 1936. Listed as a building of special architectural or historic interest in 1987, the chapel has spent most of it’s life since being decommissioned as commercial premises, once an antique shop, an estate agents and now run as a fireplace showroom by the current owners. Inside the main hall there are fantastic features such as the high arched windows, chandeliers, fitted Georgian wall cabinets and stripped wooden floors. Stairs lead down to the lower hall, again with arched windows and feature beams, plus both floors have the original arched doors fitted. The chapel could be converted into residential use subject to the necessary consents, or could be kept as a small business premises. Chapel Cottage next door is also full of history with the original part of the building dating back to around 1659. Now a 4/5 bedroom chalet bungalow with a lovely rural aspect and landscaped garden, plus full access to the chapel and parking area next door. Inside you have a cosy lounge with feature fireplace and log burning stove, up a step leads you into the library area and out into the lovely conservatory with good views of the garden and the land beyond which is rumoured to be the Hill Fort as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry of 1066 fame. Downstairs are two double bedrooms and a study/single bedroom, while upstairs are two further bedrooms and a large landing suitable for a study/TV area. Outside there is a garage with overhead storage area and a utility room to the rear which is accessed from the rear garden. Both Garage and utility room can easily be converted to give further accommodation, as they are both under the same cottage roof.. THE CHAPEL MAIN HALL Arched door to one side.
