Watch the Hottest Salsa in the World be Made at El Pinto Restaurant with the Trinidad Scorpion Pepper

E

l Pinto Restaurant in Albuquerque is inviting media to watch the bottling of the 1.1 million Scoville unit Trinidad Scorpion Pepper in El Pinto’s exclusive and limited edition Scorpion Salsa. The Trinidad Scorpion pepper was certified by the Chile Pepper Institute at New Mexico State University as one of the top three hottest peppers in the world. El Pinto Restaurant in Albuquerque will use great caution in producing this product and the limited edition Scorpion Salsa will be available for serious “chileheads’ at next week’s Fiery Food Show in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Chile is measured in Scoville heat units and while a jalapeño reaches 4,000 Scoville units, the Trinidad Scorpion consistently tested at 1.17 million units. El Pinto will use less than one pound of these precious peppers and dilute the recipe to make 100 gallons of salsa. El Pinto food engineers and chile experts from Las Cruces, New Mexico have formulated a recipe that will come in at 12,000 Scoville units. That will make the El Pinto Scorpion Salsa the hottest salsa in the world. El Pinto Restaurant in Albuquerque New Mexico is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and is known for serving iconic New Mexican cuisine. El Pinto started bottling their salsa ten years ago which is now distributed in grocery stores in all 50 states and is available online at www.elpinto.com. The limited edition Scorpion Salsa will only be available online at www.elpinto.com or at the Fiery Food Show in Albuquerque New Mexico March 2-4 at Sandia Resort and Casino. The Fiery Food Show is the top “Hot Foods” spot in the industry and is the perfect place to heat it up with Scorpion Salsa made with the Trinidad Scorpion chile pepper. Media is invited to watch El Pinto prepare and bottle this special batch of Scorpion Salsa Monday, February 27th at 11:00am. The address is 10500 Forth Street NW, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87114.

A

n increasing number of Americans have found a new way to save a dollar— or, at any rate, to save the dollar bill. At Issue That’s because they’re asking legislators to oppose the effort to take the dollar bill out of circulation and replace it with a dollar coin. The dollar bill’s supporters say such a switch would not only eliminate an American icon, it would cost businesses money. According to the experts at the economics research firm John Dunham & Associates, getting rid of the dollar bill would cost businesses about $200 million a year and lead to more than 4,000 job losses—and that doesn’t even include additional capital expenses

Saving The Dollar Bill such as new cash registers, changecounting machines, cash drawers, larger safes and so on. There will also be costs to banks, money transfer companies and other financial firms. The Expert’s Opinion “Essentially, this would be a tax increase on businesses from coast to coast,” explained John Dunham. “Americans are already struggling with a poor economy, and forcibly removing the dollar bill from circulation for a dollar coin will only exacerbate these problems for business owners.” The Government Report A Government Accountability Office (GAO) report appears to agree. It indicates “the cost of producing coins for a full replacement is never fully recovered during the 30-year

analysis.” Even without considering the cost of producing, transferring, distributing, storing and managing dollar coins, the GAO estimate

shows that the dollar coin would actually be a net cost to the government for at least the first 10 years. The People’s Preference The potential switch is also unpopular. According to a study by Luntz Global, 97 percent of Americans believe the dollar bill is more convenient than the dollar coin. What Some People Are Doing Americans for George-a group of like-minded individuals, businesses and organizations seeking to ensure that the citizens of the United States maintain the ability to choose their preferred currency-has a number of ideas about how to save the dollar bill.

Ten Tips To Help Stay Connected In Today’s Always-On World

T

he reality of today’s always-on world means that life and work must keep moving. So when you can’t be where you need to be due to unplanned events such as bad winter weather, a family situation or a surprise meeting, let Microsoft Office help you stay productive no matter where you are. “More and more, it seems the daily routine is anything but,” said Alisa Swann, productivity solution specialist at Microsoft. “While we can’t always anticipate what might come along and derail our day, we can be prepared for it. With tools from Office, it’s easy to stay connected to people and information, anytime, anywhere.” Swann recommends the following 10 tips to stay productive no matter what: 1. Be a packrat. Store important documents for free on the Web so you can access them over the Internet or from a computer, iOS device or Windows Phone. 2. Let Office be with you. Create, view, and edit documents from any Mac or PC connected to the Internet, with the free Microsoft Office Web Apps. 3. Seize the moment. Make a quick list, capture images and audio, in Microsoft OneNote on a Windows Phone or iOS device, then access and edit those notes on the Web. 4. Be as good as there. Use Microsoft

PowerPoint 2010 Broadcast on the Mac or PC to present ideas to people in different locations. Participants can even view on their mobile phone. 5. Work together when you’re not together. Make revisions with others at the same time using co-authoring in Microsoft Word 2010 and the Word Web App on the Mac or PC. 6. Take people with you. Store contact information for all the important people you know in your Microsoft Outlook Address Book—so you’ll never be without a number, email or address. 7. Mind your time. Manage your calendar and setup, move or cancel appointments on the Windows Phone with confidence. 8. Don’t make them wait. Set an automatic reply from Outlook on your PC or Windows Phone to let people know you’re out. 9. Turn information around on the go. Receive, read, edit and send Office documents from virtually anywhere on a Windows Phone. 10. Enhance your blog. Publish

T

here’s good news for Hispanic high school students who want to pursue a goal of higher education. There’s a resource that can aid their academic development and enhance their chance for success in college and beyond. In fact, many believe Advanced Placement (AP) courses can do that and more. AP courses are designed so that students can learn to think critically, construct solid arguments and see many sides of an issue- skills that prepare them for college and beyond. “In addition to the academic and economic benefits, AP courses can motivate students to have greater self-confidence and see themselves as successful college students and professionals,” says Steve Colón, executive director within the Advanced Placement Program. The courses are offered in 34 subjects, each culminating in a rigorous exam. Taking them is often seen as a way to demonstrate to college admission officers that students have sought the most rigorous curriculum available to them.

The College Board believes this news has particular significance for Latino students, given that only 19.2 percent of Latinos ages 25−34 have completed an associate degree or higher. A Way to Reduce Expenses Advanced Placement courses are offered in over 14,000 high schools across the nation. Students who score a 3 or higher on an AP Exam may be eligible for college credit or advanced placement. This has the potential to accelerate the graduation process and thus reduce or offset the cost of tuition. AP courses can also enhance a student’s scholarship opportunities. A Step up in Science There’s also evidence that students can benefit in a number of ways from AP courses in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) disciplines. According to the College Board’s report, minority students who took AP math or science exams were much more likely than non-AP students to earn degrees in physical science, engineering or life science disciplines—fields leading to some of the careers essential for America’s future prosperity. C o m m e n ta r y Facebook Is About Connecting With Friends, Sharing Pictures And…Buying Homes

W

hether it’s reuniting with old friends, sharing pictures or asking for recommendations, people are relying on Facebook more and more to manage their daily lives. According to Nielsen’s State of the Media: Social Media Report, Americans spend more time on Facebook than any other website. With 800 million active users who average more than six hours a month on the networking site, it’s no surprise that Facebook is affecting how we connect with other people, seek out advice and even buy homes. “For today’s homebuyers and sellers, one of the most convenient ways to identify, research and connect with a real estate professional is through Facebook,” said Bev Thorne, CMO of Century 21 Real Estate LLC. “When you think about it, Facebook is all about relationships, a very important thing when you’re searching for someone to guide you through one of the most significant moves you’ll make in life.”

Giving Homebuyers and Sellers Real Estate Tools Online Today’s new generation of homebuyers is increasingly turning to social networks to begin searches rather than walking into an office and seeking the help of a real estate professional. Whether they realize it or not, users are single-handedly making Facebook the latest word-of-mouth marketing powerhouse. These devoted users, 50 percent of whom return daily, aren’t just sharing gossip and pictures with friends-they’re asking for and sharing advice. Buyers and sellers can rest assured-real estate professionals are taking notice of their desire to connect via Facebook. Realtors recognize the impact Facebook can have on their business and are putting more effort into their presence in order to connect with potential clients and develop relationships through the site, often through the use of specialized applications (apps). For example, the CENTURY 21® Application for Facebook lets CENTURY 21® Brokers customize their landing page and connect with existing and potential new clients directly through Facebook. With information on current listings and homebuyer and seller toolkits, the app provides people with all the information they need to start their homebuying or selling process, without ever leaving Facebook. Tips for homebuyers and sellers using Facebook: • Ask your friends for input. Facebook is a way to reach out to several friends and neighbors all at once to ask for their advice on local real estate professionals they’d recommend. • Check out local real estate agents’ Facebook pages. Before deciding whether or not you want to reach out to a real estate professional, spend some time on their Facebook page—it should give you some insights into their services and specialties. • Pay attention to content. A sign of a reliable, knowledgeable real estate professional is that they regularly share local market news and trends while consistently engaging with their network. • Look for additional resources. Many real estate professionals will offer tools, such as the ability to view current listings and mortgage calculators, making Facebook your one-stop shop for real estate research. Saving Money in 2012 Dollars & Sense by David Uffington

W

ith a little effort, small savings can add up to big money in the space of a year. Here are a few steps to take in 2012. If you’ve filed your taxes and expect a big refund, consider that you’ve just made an interest-free loan to the government. They’ve had use of your money when you could have used it yourself. Take a look at your tax withholding, do the math and make adjustments to bring you as close as possible to the amount you’ll actually owe. If you’re getting a raise this year, put at least half of the increase in savings or toward debt, especially credit cards. Pay down the account with the highest interest rate first. (But don’t cancel the card, as it’s part of your credit profile.) Commit to making one extra mortgage payment per year or sending an additional amount each month. Enclose

a note asking that it be applied to your principal. Use an online calculator to see just how many years and dollars you can shave off your mortgage. Comparison shop before you buy big items, especially electronics and appliances. Check the Sunday sales flyers in the paper and look online at sites like Pricegrabber.com to compare prices. Print out what you find online and take it to your local store: Chances are they’ll meet or beat the other price. Consider whether you’re due for an adjustment in your property taxes. Ask the local tax assessor for a reappraisal if you’ve been in your home for more than three years; it may be worth less than it was, in which case you’re paying too much. Look for new home or vehicle insurance and consider raising your deductible. While a higher deductible will mean that you’ll have to come up with more cash should you ever

have a claim, you’ll be making smaller monthly payments on the policy. Ask about combining home and auto with one company. It’s possible you’ll get an additional discount. Shop around for a new bank if yours charges ATM fees, has a monthly service charge for checking accounts or requires you to keep a minimum balance. Call credit unions or savings banks in your area, or check Bankrate.com to find local banks.

- Save Money on Gas (NAPS)—With the rising price of gasoline, people are looking for ways to save money at the pump. Here are tips from Al Unser, Jr. that will save you money on gas as well as lower vehicle emissions and reduce maintenance costs. 1. Don’t drive aggressively. You drastically increase the fuel you consume and the emissions your car gives off when you accelerate quickly and stop quickly. Also, the more errands you take care of in one trip, the better for your mileage. 2. Do keep your car in shape. Regular tune-ups will keep your car producing less greenhouse gases, using less gasoline and preventing future trouble. If every American’s tires were properly inflated to the right level, it could save 3 billion gallons of gas every year. 3. Don’t run hot and cold. Unless your car’s a classic, chances are it’s electronically controlled and doesn’t need to be warmed up by idling. Also, go easy on the air conditioner. Park in the shade. 4. Do upgrade for efficiency. Invest in quality high-flow air filters, synthetic oils and spark plugs for better performance. Also, try not to carry unnecessary weight in your car. Check your trunk for unused items that add to the weight your engine has to move. 5. Do add an engine conditioner when you fill up the gas tank. It lubricates the combustion chamber to help prevent engine damage. Engines break down and operate inefficiently with long-term wear and tear on vital parts. By lubricating them, you can increase the longevity of your vehicle.

What’s more, every time you fill up at the pump, there’s one conditioner that can save you money while reducing the amount of toxic emissions. It’s called Force For Earth Fuel & Engine Conditioner. Force is 100 percent natural and biodegradable and works with all fuels. The easy-to-use conditioner helps your engine burn more efficiently and is nontoxic and nonhazardous so it’s safe for the environment. Other benefits include: • Increased fuel economy • Reduced heat and friction • Clean, lubricated engine parts • Improved vehicle performance • Lower maintenance costs 6. Don’t forget to add Force in your oil to clean and lubricate your engine for better performance and to extend the life of the oil. Unser uses the product in his race car, family car and even in his boat’s outboard motor. As he explains, “Force increases fuel mileage and reduces emissions by 30 percent or more. Leaving a smaller carbon footprint is very important to me as well as saving up to 19 percent on fuel and money. Who doesn’t like doing that?” To learn more and to order the product with free shipping, visit www.gasnewsusa.com or call toll free (877) 342-2111. And like them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ forcefuel. Race car champion Al Unser, Jr. uses a quality engine conditioner in all his cars to help protect the vehicles, his wallet and the environment.

How The Global Economy Will Transform Working And Learning

F

or U.S. workers, holding a series of jobs with multiple employers is replacing the traditional, decades-long career with a single company—and that can be good news for you. To win these positions in a global market, workers must embrace new technology and skills and become lifelong learners. A new book by the vice president and managing director of Apollo Research Institute describes the shifting nature of work and careers in America. In “Society 3.0: How Technology Is Reshaping Education, Work and Society,” Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti explains how the international business environment will transform old ideas of hiring, worker skill requirements and career planning, while inspiring solo entrepreneurs to innovate in profitable new ways. “Globalization now affects all workers and businesses,” says Dr. Wilen-Daugenti. A former Silicon Valley executive, she notes that videoconferences, virtual teams and other technology-based collaboration tools will improve efficiency and cut costs. Cultural competence and the ability to build trust in these new environments will be prime traits for leaders of international work groups. Another new global workforce reality: American employees face overseas competition. “Significant gaps exist between the skills workers offer and those employers require,” says Dr. Wilen-Daugenti. If this deficit persists, U.S. companies risk losing business—and American jobs—to foreign firms with better-

N

educated staff. Workers must make continuing skill renewal and education a priority to master an evolving job market. As an alternative to serial employment, more people will go solo or launch small businesses. Selfemployment has been rising—even during the recent downturn—as baby boomers choose freelancing or business ownership over traditional retirement. “America’s smallest firms and startups create the most jobs during recessions, provide half

the nation’s nonfarm GDP and have provided many of its brightest technology success stories,” notes Dr. Wilen-Daugenti. Education fuels the entrepreneurial mind-set; 95 percent of surveyed company founders held bachelor’s degrees and just under half held master’s degrees. “By starting or resuming their higher education, workers can keep their skill sets competitive or explore independent careers,” says Dr. Wilen-Daugenti. “Whether they work for themselves

or not, they will be better able to innovate and develop their potential while seizing opportunities in tomorrow’s global economy.” For more information about Society 3.0, visit www.apolloresearchinstitute.org.
