Parents, Students And The Digital World

W

hen it comes to navigating the digital world, many parents admit that their children are a step or two ahead of them. Today’s world is not the same as it was just yesterday. Embracing this, Sylvan Learning introduced SylvanSync™, a digital instructional system that uses the best of technology to provide students with an engaging, personal learning experience. The experts at Sylvan are offering the following tips to help students use technology wisely. Safety First: As soon as a child first begins to use online resources, make sure to create a safe Web environment. Carefully monitor and control usage and employ protective tools such as safe search engines with parental controls. Match Up: Make sure your child’s use of technology matches with what he or she is learning in school. Look for programs that engage several senses—visual, auditory and hand-eye dexterity. Reinforce: Children should be encouraged to use technology to reinforce what they see and learn in the real world, and use real-world experiences to reinforce what they learn using technology. To learn more about Sylvan, visit www.sylvanlearning.com or call 1-800-31-SUCCESS. Parents should encourage children to use technology to reinforce what they learn in the real world.

Doing Your Own Taxes Easier Than Ever More Americans are switching from professionals and retail stores to do-it-yourself tax preparation websites. Online solutions offer a convenient way to file on a computer or tablet from home or anyplace else with Internet access. The tax guidance and tools in online solutions are more than adequate for most taxpayers, even those with complicated tax situations. When choosing a tax preparation website, it pays to take note of the forms and tax situations covered by the products. You’ll also want to review pricing information carefully, as prices may not include state returns or tax help. “Online tax prep products are carefully designed by CPAs, accountants and developers to translate complicated tax laws and forms into plain English,” explained Jessi Dolmage of TaxACT. “The programs have a simple but very intelligent Q&A interview to cover hundreds of credits and deductions and check for errors.” WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Before doing your taxes on a computer or tablet, she recommends gathering all your tax forms and documents, including: • Last year’s federal return (and state return, if applicable) for comparison purposes • Form W-2 for wages, tips and pensions—

employers have until Jan. 31 to distribute to employees • Form 1099 for interest, dividends, state tax refunds, retirement plan distributions and unemployment—issuers have until Jan. 31 to distribute • Form 1098 for mortgage interest paid • Retirement plan statements • Schedule K-1 from partnerships, S corporations, estates and trusts • Estimated tax payments • If you itemize deductions: receipts for health care expenses, and other income or sales taxes paid, mortgage interest and points, charitable gifts, work-related costs, investment expenses and casualty and theft losses • If you’re a business owner: documents related to income statements (1099-MISC and payment stubs not reported on 1099s), health insurance payments and pension plan contributions (such as Keogh, SEP and SIMPLE) • Social Security numbers for you, your spouse and your dependents • Bank account and routing numbers if you want to get your refund by direct deposit or pay your taxes electronically.

Solutions like TaxACT guide you through the tax implications of life changes to make sure you’re not leaving any money on the table.”

Dolmage also reminds taxpayers to take stock of how your life changed. “Events like marriage, college, buying a house, having a child, moving and retirement could mean thousands of dollars difference in your refund or what you owe.

FILING TIPS: Tax experts also recommend the following: • E-file. It’s secure and convenient, and you’ll receive confirmation when your return has been processed by the IRS. • For the fastest refund, e-file and choose direct deposit. • Before filing, double-check Social Security numbers, bank account numbers and spelling of names. Misspelled and wrongly typed numbers and names are among the most common mistakes made on returns. • File and pay by the April 15 deadline to avoid IRS penalties and interest. If you file for a sixmonth automatic extension, remember that any balance is still due by April 15. • Don’t procrastinate. Rushing can lead to costly mistakes. LEARN MORE:

And When To Call In The Pros W

hether it’s a cramped kitchen, an outdated bathroom or an ugly paint job, you don’t have to live with your home’s imperfections. You may have considered tackling these home improvements yourself. However, there are many things to consider before you make the decision to Do It Yourself (DIY) or hire a professional. To help, home improvement expert and DIY Network host Amy Matthews offers homeowners guidance to make an educated decision when it comes to the choice between going DIY versus hiring a professional. Getting The Right Price When You Sell Your Car S

elling your car yourself may be easier-and more financially rewarding-than you realize. Here are some tips:

•Come Clean. Start by throwing away all trash and removing all personal items from the vehicle. Some believe that having the car detailed before you list it is an investment that can pay off at sale time. •Check it Out. Have a trusted mechanic inspect your car. The mechanic’s analysis and feedback can help you develop a negotiating strategy, particularly if there are parts of the car in need of repair. •The Right Price. Setting the right price for your car is key. Set it too high and you waste time-too low and you lose money. Fortunately, you can refer to the Kelly Blue Book to determine the car’s value. Sellers can also purchase the Carfax “Unlimited For Sale By Owner” package. It provides interested buyers with the detailed Carfax history of your vehicle. Understanding Applications plans on the website to help guide their children as well as information on how to help pay for their child’s education. “A common mistake families make in selecting colleges is considering sticker price rather than net price, [which is] the published price of the college minus the gift aid that the student receives,” Bell said. In fact, most full-time college students receive some type of financial aid, and aid options vary by college. Students can get a personalized estimate from more than 300 colleges by using the College Board Net Price Calculator. They can also link to an individual institution’s net price calculator by clicking on the “paying” tab on the school’s profile page on the college search section of BigFuture.

W

hether starting the college application process early or jumping in late, free online planning tools, tips and resources are invaluable to students looking for ways to successfully complete their college applications. Among the options available to students, BigFuture™ (bigfuture.org) was created with the advice of real students and educators, and offers tips on common concerns such as how to get started if you are overwhelmed or are a procrastinator, how to finalize your application list, how to get a great letter of recommendation, and how to craft your application essays. “The key to minimizing the stress of the college application process, whether you are starting as early as middle school or are a senior just beginning now, is to get and stay organized,” said April Bell, director of counseling at The College Board. “A step-by-step action plan will allow you to keep track of deadlines and various elements of a strong college application.” BigFuture lets students create a personalized action plan that gives them expert advice on all the steps they need to take to apply to college. By answering up to five simple questions, students can create a plan that serves as a road map to guide them through school to college, advise them on what to do and when, and track their progress. Parents can also find action

BigFuture provides four key starter steps for students who are overwhelmed by the college application process or are starting late. They include a breakdown of the anatomy of the college application, an application checklist and important truths about applying to college, such as the fact that college admission isn’t as competitive as many students think. Fewer than 100 colleges in the U.S. are highly selective (i.e., they accept less than 25 percent of applicants) and close to 500 four-year colleges accept more than 75 percent of applicants. Open-admission colleges accept all or most high school graduates. BigFuture’s college search feature provides comparative information on almost 4,000 college options. Research shows that applying to at least three colleges improves your chances of successfully enrolling in college. “Also critical is the ability to narrow your list once you’ve explored all your options,” Bell said. “Most counselors recommend that students apply to five to eight colleges—more than that may not be the best use of time and resources.” BigFuture provides expert advice on finalizing your college list, including how to narrow, sort and balance your list, as well as how to take cost into consideration. Two critical elements of a college application are the essays and the letters of recommendation. BigFuture provides “8 Tips for Crafting Your Best College Essay” and “3 Ways to Approach Common College Essay Questions,” as well as video tips from experts and real students and an analysis of a sample essay. Students can also learn “How to Get a Great Letter of Recommendation,” including specific tips on whom to ask and what to provide letter writers with in order to get the best results. (NAPSI)

UltraViolet Adds New Value To Movies

G

ive a friend or loved one a favorite film or TV show for the holidays and it’s probably going to come with an added bonus—the freedom to watch it anywhere, anytime. That’s because thousands of films are now available digitally to watch on a variety of devices through the new UltraViolet system. With UltraViolet, your friends and family can not only watch the movies and TV shows they own at home while on the sofa, they can also stream and download the content in their libraries anytime, anywhere on such devices as tablets, mobile phones, game consoles and PCs. All this means movies and TV shows have even more value as holiday gifts because UltraViolet has made home collections more mobile, convenient and easier to share than ever before. Signing up is free and easy. Here’s how to include UltraViolet in someone’s stocking: • Give a friend or family member a movie with an UltraViolet sticker attached to the package.

• Give a gift card that can be used to buy movies online. Many come with UltraViolet rights. Your friends and loved ones can also convert existing DVDs and Blu-ray Discs into digital versions at stores like Walmart. UltraViolet works like this: Your collection of movies and TV shows is stored in the “cloud.” Up to six family members share the collection, streaming and downloading the films they like so they can watch them whenever and wherever they want on the devices they choose. UltraViolet also makes travel for the holidays easier. Waiting at the airport or time spent on long flights goes faster with an enjoyable movie for the family to watch. And having a digital collection of your movies accessible on a mobile device, tablet or PC can provide the right entertainment on a cold night by the fire. For more information on how to get started enjoying the benefits of UltraViolet, go to www.uvvu.com. (NAPSI)

One Happy Island -------------------------------------------------------------------------------One of the most revisited spots in the Caribbean, Aruba-One Happy Island-is where pristine turquoise waters collide with the desertlike north shore; where peace and relaxation co-exist with wild and rugged adventures; and Dutch influence meets American ease. Did you know: 1. Arikok National Park is home to many hidden beaches, wild flora and fauna, geology and historical cave paintings. Near the Fontein Cave and Blue Lagoon, rocky cliffs and crashing waves mark Boca Prins. Nearby, Dos Playa is a surfer’s haven. 2. At the North Coast cliffs, you can travel rocky ravines on horseback to discover the Natural Pool. Known in Papiamento as “Conchi,” this shell-shaped pool is surrounded by large lava rocks that greet crashing waves. 3. Celebrating its 10th anniversary as Aruba’s official language in May 2013, Papiamento is a direct reflection of the island’s diverse history and culture. Papiamento is a Creole language derived from African dialects and blended with English, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese. 4. Home to 90-plus nationalities, Aruba offers a wide array of authentic, flavor-rich dishes including local favorites keshi yena, funchi and pan bati. 5. Visitors and locals alike enjoy a weekly Carnival celebration every Thursday evening at Carubbian Festival in San Nicolas, the Sunrise City. The festival boasts elaborate costumes, electric dancing and live entertainment, local cuisine and handmade artwork. The island offers breathtaking beaches, a booming culinary scene, world-famous events, adrenaline-pumping activities, art galleries and museums, sumptuous spas, championship golf and exclusive shopping. Golden Agers Win Olympic Gold G etting older doesn’t have to mean getting out of the game.

Consider, for example, the Celadrin Tigerettes Senior Olympics Women’s basketball team. Ranging in age from 64 to 74, the team won the Senior Olympic gold medal at the last national games in Houston. In fact, they are seven-time Senior Olympic champions, and are poised to defend their title at the 2013 national games in July.Ê Mavis Albin, Mary Bendsen, Wanda Blailock, Loretta Hill, Nikki Leader and Catherine “Kitty” Sparacello, united by their love of basketball, have compiled a Michael Jordanesque record of 185 wins against a mere five losses while barnstorming the country to compete against other mature cagers. They have even played the Harlem Globetrotters in a pickup game. In fact, they will be featured in a PBS documentary, “The Age of Champions,” www.ageofchampions.org, scheduled for release this summer. Along the way, they’ve become role models—not only for their peers but for younger people who find inspiration in their prowess. Former NBA sharpshooter Dennis Scott, who once held the record for the most three-pointers in one season, volunteers as their coach.

“These ladies are phenomenal. They’ve got so much energy and are just hilarious with their practical jokes. They really do put their hearts into the game,” said Coach Scott. “It’s incredible that they do what they do at their age. They are in great shape and this gives hope to people who fear the day they’re ‘too old.’ These grandmas definitely got game.” “We all started playing basketball when we were young and we’ve just stuck with it. Training is very important to maintain your stamina and muscle tone but we also have our little secrets that help keep us going,” said team captain Albin. “As a team, we believe in proper nutrition, daily

use of nutritional supplements and an active lifestyle. “Diet and exercise are usually sufficient if you’re in your 20s, but at our age, a little extra help is needed. The ladies and I do our research on what works for us. Supplements such as fish oil, omega-3s and Celadrin help prevent inflammation and stiffness. We also watch our diets and make sure we’re getting enough whole grains, fruits, vegetables and protein. If we start making poor decisions, it will show up on the court,” added Albin. Celadrin Joint Flexibility & Relief is an all-natural blend of special fatty acids clinically shown to promote joint health, reduce knee discomfort and improve flexibility.
