Is Entrepreneurship For You? from www.SBA.gov

S

tarting your own business can be an exciting and rewarding experience that offers numerous advantages, such as the ability to be your own boss, set your own schedule and make a living doing something you enjoy. Becoming a successful entrepreneur requires sound planning, creativity and hard work. It also involves taking risks because all businesses require some form of financial investment. To begin evaluating whether or not owning a business is right for you, consider the personal characteristics and qualities that can help improve entrepreneurial success.

Defined Publishing, Inc. 2011

FACT: Anyone can learn how to be an entrepreneur Entrepreneurs often have similar traits and characteristics. Here are some of the qualities that can go a long way in bolstering business success. If you don’t have all of these traits, don’t worry. Most can be learned with practice. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Creative Inquisitive Driven Goal-oriented Independent Confident Calculated risk taker Committed Avid learner Self-starter Hard worker Resilient (able to grow from failure or change) High-energy level Integrity Problem solving skills Strong management and organizational skills

One approach to improving creativity is to research and learn as much as you can about the things that interest you. New ideas can come from reading or by talking to others who have the same interests. Another way to spark your creativity is to think about a problem and picture different ways to solve the issue. Once you have an idea, think it through and determine if it is a reasonable option. If it is, try it. If it isn’t, keep thinking. Don’t limit yourself. Be open to a variety of possibilities and your creative mind will naturally form new ideas. To keep your creativity flowing, use these helpful hints: • Look for new ideas in a variety of ways • Keep the process simple • Start small • Try, try again

Businesses are built on ideas. In fact, the first step to starting a business is to come up with an original idea. Therefore, entrepreneurs must be open to thinking creatively. Are you able to think of new ideas? Can you imagine new ways to solve problems? Do you have insights on how to take advantage of new opportunities? Many people believe that some individuals are just born with creative minds, while others are not. This might be true, but you can learn to be more creative if you want to become an entrepreneur!

Taking the Mystery Out of Credit Scores

F

ICO, short for Fair Isaac Corporation, was founded in 1956 by a mathematician and an engineer who were interested in the analysis of numbers -including credit scores. Their work gave creditors a means of predicting which customers are more or less likely to default on loans. Your score can pre-determine how you’re treated by creditors: 1. A high credit scores equates to a lower anticipated rate of default. 2. Creditors raise or lower the interest rates they offer you based on your likely risk of default.

Dollars & Sense by David Uffington 3. The higher your credit score, the better the deal you’ll get on interest and the more money you’re likely to save over time. The front screen of the MyFico. com website gives a perfect example of potential savings: “A 100-point difference in your FICO score could mean over $40,000 extra in interest payments over the life of a 30-year mortgage on a $300,000 home loan.” FICO scores range from 300 to 850 and are based payment history, length of credit history, new credit you might open, amount of established credit and the types of credit. A mix of credit types --

perhaps vehicle, mortgage, credit card -- will yield a better score than all credit cards or vehicle only. With all the lender emphasis on credit worthiness, a simple late payment can damage your credit score. The later it is, the more damage is done. Here’s an additional credit fact: Unfair though it is, the higher your credit score, the bigger the “ding” to your credit if you do miss payments. Here is a comparison of late payment and bankruptcy at two levels of credit score and the length of time for the score to rise again: Thirty days late: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 600-620, but can rise again in nine months. A score

of 780 might be cut to 670-690, and it could take three years for the score to rise again. Bankruptcy: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 530-550, and could take five years to rise again. A score of 780 might be cut to 540-560, and it could take seven to 10 years for the score to rise again. For more information on keeping your credit score healthy, visit MyFico.com. Dear Letting Go Pro: I WATCHED A TV PROGRAM THE OTHER NIGHT ABOUT ALADY WHO HAS THE DIRTIEST HOUSE IN AMERICA. THEN I LOOKED AT MY HOUSE AND GOT SCARED… HELP!!. SIGNED SCARED HOME OWNER What might you have in common with America’s dirtiest home owner? Let’s count the possibilities. • • • • • • •

Single Parent Detached from positive childhood experiences Shops to forget the reality Creates emotional ties to the stuff around her Becomes overwhelmed with the outcomes of the above items Feel stagnated by the stuff that is accumulated, as a result of your own habits Sinking in your own mental traffic of STUFF – and keeping your self stuck in a rut

Getting a sense of what this home owner may be experiencing?

There is a way out; a way to begin Letting Go of Stuff®. The person’s situation did not happen overnight. It probably developed over years of poorly developed habits and the development of self-defeating mental traffic. Though cleaning the house will not fix the owner’s problem, it is a great start. As you look around your house and/or office – what do you see? How do you feel?

as you clean house Step 4 – Make a list – of your family and friends who may want some of your stuff Step 5 – Invite those on the above list over to get what they want. Give them an initial date and deadline date to come by and get what they want. Step 6 – Have a garage sale and sell everything you can. Use experts like those on Clean House.

Does the notion of ending up with a house full of STUFF over many years – scare the heck Step 7 – Remove yourself from the house out of you? Even if it only brings chills to your during the sale and read a copy of Letting Go of spine, there is a way to thwart off that kind of Stuff while you are away. future. Step 8 – Have the same people who managed When I purchased my parents home, it was your garage sale come back and remove filled with all of their STUFF. Their combined everything else that did not sell. Again, remove life span of 143 years was depicted in every your self from the house during this process. room of their home. Tips & Tricks for Automotive Health by Scott Chazdon

How Hot is Hot?

id you know that lead melts at 621 degrees Fahrenheit? Magnesium melts at 1200 degrees. Silver turns liquid around 1760 degrees. And iron begins to run at 2797 degrees. Why do I tell you all this? Well I wanted to discuss just how hot your engine gets. Especially on a summer day where we routinely top 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Now you may say, “I know how hot my engine runs. My coolant temperature gauge never leaves 180 degrees”. Well that is the temperature of the coolant or antifreeze at the thermostat. Not the temperature everywhere in the engine. In fact the average temperature inside the combustion chamber is 1600 to 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. Take a look at that number again and look at the first paragraph. The temperatures inside the engine, where the pistons and spark plugs are, get hot enough to melt many

metals. I find it incredible that less than a few feet away is the radiator that can drop temperatures of the coolant 90% in just a few seconds and then send it back for more. Yes, the cooling system is incredible in what it does. The water pump keeps the coolant circulating, the thermostat regulates that temperate, the radiator gets rid of the heat, and the heater core (let’s not forget that) lets some of that heat escape into the cab of your vehicle to keep you toasty warm on cold winter days. Now, if 1600 to 1800 was not bad enough we add our Air Conditioning System to pull the heat out of the cabin on hot summer days. No, it never gets to be 1800 degrees in the cabin though it may feel like when the A/C is broken. But that can add to the cooling systems problems. To make matters worse, manufacturers are under constant pressure to make the cars cheaper, lighter, better on gas economy and so forth. They accomplish that with smaller, more efficient cooling systems that dissipate the same heat faster with less surface area to do it in. Do more with less and stress goes up. Ever felt like that in your job? All of this is leading up to one simple point. Maintaining your cooling system is critical if you want it to last. Coolant flushes every 30k miles and constant testing of the system for pH

balance and % coolant to water are how you take care of this hard working system. If not then one summer day with your A/C blasting and the accelerator mashed you may notice your temp gauge playing Jack and the Bean Stalk as it climbs through the clouds. Once it gets above 212 degrees (boiling) things get interesting. Before metals melt they . This can blow head gaskets (expensive), water pumps, intake gaskets, and even radiators. Any of these can leave you on the side of the road with a tow bill and an expensive repair. In making cars cheaper to purchase or higher performance many engines will not tolerate running in an overheated condition because of higher stresses and/or cheaper parts. European cars are especially intolerant of heat. My recommendation is do the maintenance but above all, never, never, never operate your vehicle in an overheated condition. I mean even a little. The red mark on the gauge may not begin until 260 degrees but I would not allow my engine to ever get above 220. Ever. Prepaid Cards: Load at Your Own Risk by David Uffington

T

he government did us a favor when it created the CARD Act, which reined in banks and credit-card companies that had been collecting millions of extra dollars from consumers. Thanks to the Card ACT, we gained 21 days to make a payment, 45 days notification of serious changes in terms, the little box on the statements that shows how long it will take to pay off the debt if we only pay the minimum, and more. Now a new industry has sprung up, devising new ways to separate us from our dollars: the prepaid card, also called the “reloadable” card. Consumers are invited to use the prepaid cards as they would a bank: deposit a paycheck, have bills automatically paid out of the balance, buy groceries. The cards can be purchased and reloaded nearly anywhere, including convenience stores and big-box stores. Prepaid cards are becoming big business as more and more people opt out of having regular checking and savings accounts. Some lack good credit; many don’t want to incur credit-card interest; while others simply want the convenience of not carrying cash.

The prepaid cards, however, don’t come with the same protections as credit cards: Those CARD Act laws don’t cover prepaid cards, especially when it comes to fees. If you put, say, $100 on a prepaid card, you’d think you’d have that whole $100 of your own money to spend. Not so. Prepaid cards can come with: purchase fees, activation fees, minimum deposit fees, card-replacement fees, withdrawal fees, ATM inquiry fees, cancellation fees, monthly fees, reload fees, annual fees, PIN fees and even fees to talk to customer service. Prepaid cards generally put a temporary lock on your funds when used at a gas station or for hotels, denying you access to your own money. Some of the prepaid cards even include a line of credit or overdraft protection. If you don’t keep careful track of the associated fees, you can spend more than you expect and incur debt. There’s also no credit reporting with prepaid cards, which means they can’t be used to build up a credit history. Instead of paying fees to use your own money, open a bank account and use the debit card that comes with it.
